LAT Endorses McCain: Weak on Fences, Strong on Global Warming

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

The LA Times has endorsed John McCain in the GOP primary, and at least two of its reasons for doing so should give conservatives pause: the liberal paper likes McCain because he's weak on border fences and strong on global warming.

Excerpts [emphasis added]:

As the Republican field indulged this campaign season in an orgy of ignorance on immigration, McCain stood his ground, sponsoring legislation that would provide a route to citizenship for the 11 million to 12 million immigrants here illegally. His rivals have argued for mass deportations and strong border fences.

Similarly, McCain has led his party in its halting effort to confront the reality of climate change. He introduced the Senate's first attempt to address the problem legislatively in 2003, and although that bill failed, McCain has supported cap-and-trade systems that could reduce greenhouse gases, and he has stayed that course despite criticism from fellow Republicans.

I agree... the headline

I agree... the headline says it all.

No surprise there. Are there any conservative-leaning newspapers endorsing McCain?

Next question: why worry about who a liberal paper like the LA Times or the Boston Globe endorse? They don't really care; as soon as the nominees are chosen, they will be going with the Democrat anyway!

Slightly Disagree, mother b

motherbelt - I think the newspaper endorsements will be much more shrewd in 2008, thanks to scrutiny from NewsBusters and others.  I think many newspapers will hold back until it's certain that Hillary or Obama will crush McCain in the general election.  Then, they will endorse McCain, and claim that this demonstrates their journalistic "openess" and "balance."

I disagree. They don't give

I disagree. They don't give a rat's tail about pretending to be either "open" or "balanced." When the rubber meets the road, they may throw McCain a bone with a compliment or two, but their endorsements will be for the Democrat.

And as soon as McCain racks

And as soon as McCain racks up all the delegates he needs to 'capture' the nomination, watch out.  Those same newspapers that are endorsing him will smear him with his own mud.

McCain is a poor choice for a candidate.  Newspapers and Democrats both know it.  That's why they love him today.  But look out tomorrow.

No surprise there. Are

No surprise there. Are there any conservative-leaning newspapers endorsing McCain?

LOL Mb...my question is what conservative leaning papers?...

Washington Times is the only one I can think of...WSJ is like half and half if that I think...right leaning papers are few and far between...or how about just fair and balanced papers...maybe it is different in other areas of the country...

Just askin'....

bt.....great point. LOL...

bt.....great point. LOL... You're right...I can't think of any others besides the Times either! The NY Post and the Boston Herald are slightly, but I think that's mostly in comparison with their city-sister counterparts.

on the Democrat ballot?

Is John running against Hillary and Barry in the primaries?

McCain has supported

McCain has supported cap-and-trade systems that could reduce greenhouse gases, and he has stayed that course despite criticism from fellow Republicans.

So why isn't he bragging about that, instead of bragging with the lie that he was the ONLY Republican to support the surge and stayed with it in spite of criticism from his fellow Republicans.????

The McCain Drain

"....the reality of climate change"

Don't cha love the word choice?

That settles it then!

Scientifically Illiterate McCain Wants Higher Energy Prices

I am at a loss for why people supporting him want to pay more for energy? Have they been brainwashed to fight "Global Warming?"

Thanks for posting this

Thanks for posting this stuff. I know everyone else wears you out, but frankly, I'm lazy.

We have a big drag racing forum. One of the most important ones in the sport. It has turned into a Mitt Romney campaign site!

http://competitionpl...

We have like six threads in our general discussion section. So your links have saved me a lot of time! Romney is the only candidate that is being actively pushed. I'd say 90 percent of the people are concervative and to a person, none will vote for McCain.

The drag racing starts next weekend. It'll be in California. Hopefully Romney will get a boost, and there will be a buzz out there.

Mitt Romney: Car Enthusiast

No problem, all car enthusiast should be concerned with any AGW regulation as it is likely to have a negative impact on their auto related hobby, sport or job. I dread the day we are forced to all drive a Pius. Mitt Romney is the only true car enthusiast in the race with a history in the automotive industry as his father was CEO of AMC.

PT, a PIUS? Is that like a Prius without a reverse gear?

Whatever it takes to save a few ounces of weight. Lol.

"PIUS" - From Brock Yates, Car and Driver

I got that from an article from Brock Yates in Car and Driver:

Hybrid issues, and a rising star at Indy (Brock Yates, Car and Driver)

Though I spelled it wrong, it should be PIOUS. I like that though, "no 'R' - no reverse gear to save on weight", heh.

I cannot see any car enthusiast seriously going along with the Global Warming and Hybrid Hype.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Smug Alert!

In the "Smug Alert!" episode of South Park, the hybrid cars are called the "Pious."

It's a must-see for any AGW deniers, skeptics, infidels, or whatever we're called today.

PT, Long live Brock (Speed kills, my *ss) Yates and C/D.

Best car mag ever, IMHO! Been reading it since the late 70's.

Their only real mistakes were allowing Don Sherman to leave and later forcing out David E. Davis, Jr.

Has anyone been stuck behind

the driver of a hybrid? At least in Tucson the drivers are driving way under the speed limit...makes me crazy. I have no doubt I waste more gas passing them than the gas they would use driving the speed limit.

True, that is annoying. But

True, that is annoying. But there's also driving behind the foreign exchange graduate student who doesn't know what the hell they're doing, and the soccer mom in the boat-sized SUV who's on the phone, handing out juice boxes while crossing five lanes of traffic without looking.

Actually

the worst here in Tucson are the drivers from Minnesota, then Michigan, then those driving older Lincoln Continentals...I have made a study of it as I am stuck behind these people. I certainly see those you mention also. I have just lately been behind a few hybrids...oh, and a Ron Paul supporter last night. :)

As one of the they

Still waiting for you John (I can secure the border) to do it.Talk is cheap especially in DC.Actions speak louder than words and all you have done is talk.Funny thing John your in the senate now and havent done jack to secure the border.Forget about Oct 2006?Where is the fence?

What cracks me up the most

What cracks me up the most about all these leftist rags endorsing McCain is the fact that he acts like it is a thing of beauty, something to be proud of, a glorified achievement of some sort...yep McCain it's your crowning glory....for me all of this proves all we need to know about your despicable self and what you really stand for.

Right bt. He is too dense

Right bt. He is too dense to realize that their adulation should be a sign of embarrassment for him, not pride. What the hell glory is there in being the Republican that a left-wing newspaper dislikes the least? If he were a real Republican, he would be bragging about liberal newspapers NOT endorsing him!

Mark, from a previous post, I'm

still wondering when will the 'forces of truth and endorsement' turn on our ex-Scooter pilot?

This years' campaign is shaping up to be the one that really is "Least Objectionable". Have any of these folks even TRIED to explain what would happen to our economy IF all they want comes to pass? How far are we going to go towards socialism before the american people get their minds back in the game? or are we all doomed to be taced to death and become another third world country? What else can be done to overcome the media bias that seems to be anti-everything american? Even considering that what the media does, would certainly be the path to the gallows in anyother socialist/communist/progressive country in the world?

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

What was the debate yesterday here?

Something was posted yesterday about Ann Coulter being wrong in McCain is not more liberal than Hillary???????????

Gee John McCain endorsed by the LIBERAL LOS ANGELES TIMES.......flanked by Sell out Arnold and Gun Grabber Rudy.

The LA TIMES just picked one of their own. I profiled McCain and it is posted on Newsbusters. CONSERVATIVES BETTER PUSH THIS HARD NOW or it looks like the cartel got their boy in McCain, will sink Hillary and Obama in the election and not have to initiate the Gore Bloomberg option and McCain is the globalist candidate.
I do not say defeat McCain if Romney fails, BUT IS SAY PUSH HARD NOW THAT MCCAIN HAS TO PICK SOMEONE LIKE JEB BUSH, FRED THOMPSON OR MY CHOICE OF LYNN CHENEY.

Get a Conservative in back of McCain and Congress is so screwed up they will never pass amnesty or any of the other garbage McCain represents.

Get the spurs and whip out boys as if McCain is our horse it is time to teach him the way he needs to run.

No need to worry if Gore endorses Obama. He just brings the we-are-all-going-to-die-because-of-manmade-global-warming crowd to the table. They'll all be crispy toast by voting time and wont be able to vote.

Sounds like a garden-variety lib to me.

I can't wait to see McCain freak out

When his lefist MSM buddies start to pound him senseless, old John is gonna fall far and hard.

Will a McCain or Huckabee Supporter Please Answer This Question:

Why do you want to pay higher energy prices? Why do you want to fight Global Warming?

I keep asking the question but never can get any answers.

The Anti 'Man-Made' Global Warming Resource

Welcome Ladies and Gentlemen

To the new and improved GOP.

Global warming taxes, sacrificing for the common good, immigration amnesty and forced multi-cultural integration.

At least McCain got this out of his system before he started "reaching out to the right."

As McCain thumps his chest

As McCain thumps his chest in triumph over all these sterling endorsements from such bastions of conservatism (no, I didn't keep a straight face typing that), I can't help but wonder how he's going to react when they turn around and club him like a baby seal if he actually is the candidate that runs against Barry or Hilly.

Is there an over and under as to how quickly he comes unglued?

Well, speaking

of the "halting effort to confront the reality of climate change", here is yet another nail in the climate change coffin http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/2006-01-22-tokyo-snow_x.htm. IMO this has been a cold winter, I guess they would say it is just aberration.

DevilDocMom: That could be TODAY's headline

I kid you not, it snowed like the dickens today in Tokyo and surrounding environs, stranding untold thousands and closing Narita airport. Possibly the most snowfall for this area (just south of Yokohama) that I've encountered in the 15 years I've lived here.

Well, don't think

anyone in the old media will notice it...or if they do it will be some how related to global warming having caused it.

Speaking of all of this...I

Speaking of all of this...I heard chris Matthews this morning on his half hour show say that the snow pack in the Rockies is dying...

My husband and I looked at each other and started cracking up laughing...

These people are nuts.

Fox just ran

a news story on a huge snow storm in Oregon and this story ran the other day http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2008Jan29/0,4670,WinterStorm,00.html. Does not mention that dying snowpack in the Rockies. :) We will have rain here in Tucson and since I am sure everyone will be watching the Super Bowl I bet you see rain there-remnants of the storm.

Candidate Flip-Flop

He really is the Republican (sic) who is defying gravity.  Can conservatives crash and burn him before it's too late?

Check out my exclusive edit of BBC News America's interview with Mrs Clinton: It's news to me!

Jack, Jack,

Jack, Jack, Jack....

You're forgetting the liberal "Rule of Flip-Flops":

When one changes one's mind to embrace a more conservative view, that's a "flip-flop." Very bad.

When one change's one's mind to embrace a liberal point of view, he is "evolving." As in "becoming more enlightened."

Republicans?

When will the "Repubicans" ever learn? They won't because they are RINOS. McCain is a RINO. So, let it be. If, by strange circumstances, McCain becomes president, he will rule like a RINO. Border security?, lower taxes?, --forgetaboutit! And when he reaches "across the aisle", the Supreme court will move to the left, law breaking illegals will be "assimilated" and we'll all learn how to pay for them and learn how to speak Spanish. Kyoto Treaty here we come. And isn't the U.N. just great! Moreover, the vindictive twit will be out to punish all those who oppose him (just like Hillary). "F" the conservatives; that's the McRino way!

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"
