Matthews Machine-Guns 2nd Amendment: 'I Want People Disarmed'

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Living in the DC area, Chris Matthews has surely been stuck in traffic more than once behind someone sporting the classic NRA bumper sticker: "If Guns Are Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Have Guns." Was Chris was listening too intently to NPR to consider the the truth of that pithy aphorism? You might think so, considering his anti-gun rant that seemed to assume that criminals, rather than law-abiding citizens, will obey restrictions on gun ownership.

On this evening's Hardball, riffing off Mitt Romney's Second Amendment defense during last night's GOP debate, Chris took aim at National Review's Deroy Murdock, a Giuliani backer.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Go ahead Deroy, you live in the city. I don't understand how we want to get on the subway at night knowing that everybody else in the subway is armed, and because I have a gun I'm OK.

DEROY MURDOCK: Well, there have been studies that have shown that in cities where there are concealed-carry laws, the gun, rather, the crime rate goes down because criminals are afraid that people may retaliate. As for this particular --

MATTHEWS: What do you think of that? What do you think of that? What's your view?

MURDOCK: On this race, what's interesting is that Romney --

MATTHEWS: You don't want to give me your view because it requires you to actually say what you think, because I'm asking you Deroy --

MURDOCK: I happen to agree with that. I think that --

MATTHEWS: You think we should have a concealed gun law in New York?

MURDOCK: Yah, I think that would probably be helpful. There are people who do conceal guns here, and to the extent that people think that criminals might be retaliated on, I think that helps keep the place safe. I would point out that Romney, who claims to be Mr. Second Amendment now, actually increased the cost for gun permits, and he claimed when he ran for governor that he wasn't a man of the NRA, and now that he's running for president he claims to be a lifetime member of the NRA -- lifetime being defined as joining in August of 2006. So even on the gun issue he's sort of all over the map.

MATTHEWS: You know what I think? In big cities they ought to check people on sidewalks like getting on airplanes. And why an airplane should be safer than an American sidewalk is crazy to me. Why you can walk down the sidewalk of an American city carrying a concealed weapon without a license is wacky.

MURDOCK: I think [you should have to have] a license.

MATTHEWS: But that's what's going on. I'm talking about a different point here. I want to see people disarmed. I want people disarmed in our major cities. How's that for a plan? I don't think we should all be armed, and I don't think more guns is the answer. I think it's wacky to say that the solution to armed robbery and killing in our streets in big cities is to put more arms in the streets. Anyway, thank you Deroy.

The students and professors

The students and professors at Virginia Tech were all disarmed; it was a no-gun zone.

How do you think that worked out, Chris?

As was the scene of every

As was the scene of every single (yes, 100%) mass shooting in modern American history.

None of the people in Von Maur in Omaha were armed

Westroads Mall is a gun-free zone. Why do you think the shooter chose that particular location?

Take the guns away from law abiding folks, then only the law abiding folks will be without guns. How does that logic continue to escape them?

Look how safe the 9/11 planes were Chrissy.

Look at D.C. Chrissy. With their handgun ban for years (that was just recently declared unconstitutional) they have a higher gun violence rate than cities three times their size.

There is plenty of empiracle evidence that proves that NRA pithy statement is absolutely true. If guns are illegal, then only criminals will have guns.

OK Chris, suppose it's just you and your wife and another guy in the subway car at night, and he turns out to be a crazy with a gun..... and he knows you are unarmed.

Folks, it's a no brainer

like chrissy to NOT understand what the 2nd means. It is also useless to try to reason with the useless - that's right chris, you're useless. You have no use. You don't know how to think, and you want to be part of the power structure that takes rights away from citizens. Unfortuneatly for you, we DO know how to think, and we also know THAT drives you crazy. So, enjoy the ride till we get there.

Condoms stop rape

Disarming citizens stops crime and condoms stop rape and syringes only available to doctors stops illegal drugs and 9 11 did not happen because Chris Matthews showed Muslims Americans understand.

All of that makes perfect sense.

More important who is the brunette hottie at the bottom of the picture grab.......surely Mr. Finkelstein you can do a weekly Newsbuster segment on her.......and hopefully she will email you some pictures of her for the blogs.
If I knew who she was I would request them myself lol.

All things considered, if I

All things considered, if I were in a large city with a history of, and reputation for, violence, I would for darn sure want 50 or 60 armed CCW permit holders around me.  The reason being I know that any fool who wanted to start some **** wouldn't live to tell about it, and he (or she) wouldn't clog up an already overburdened criminal justice system.  Also, it's pretty hard to cop a plea to get a wrist slap when you suddenly gain a few ounces of weight.

Answer by weak codependent groupthink socialist media:

2. Gubment frisks everyone contrary to 4th amendment.

I would rather unreasonable and reasonable persons have guns, then only unreasonable have guns.

This is probably just an urban legend but;  I've heard that New York's Sullivan law was passed because the criminals complained about running into armed citizens.

Liberals

Liberals, tyrants, despots, fascists and communist all have the same idea about guns. They scare them, citizens that can shoot back alarm them.

Why is that I wonder?

'Cause they're afraid of

'Cause they're afraid of people getting shot accidentally? Maybe including themselves?

Scared they might shoot

Scared they might shoot themselves in the balls if stem cells are ever found to be instrumental in them growing a set.

Matthews

Thank you, Mark, for posting this.  I was watching (nothing better to do) and could barely contain throwing something through the TV.  The ignorance of liberals to the actual issues of gun ownership is unbelievable.

Does anyone think that Matthews or any of his ilk would stand by and let the police frisk a young black or latino and confiscate any weapon found?  Or would they be standing on their desks in their safe studios railing on the unreasonable search and seizure along with racial profiling?

One armed (with CCW permit) volunteer security guard at a church in Colorado saved untold lives from a crazed gunman.  What happened at Va. Tech?  Columbine?  Luby's?  San Ysidro McDonalds?  Von Maur?  Post Office in Oklahoma?  Red Lake?  Law Office in San Francisco?

Give me an armed, law abiding citizen any time.

Most tyrannical governments

Most tyrannical governments want people disarmed too. Gee I wonder why Chrissy?

Oh yea, and criminals want people disarmed too.  Is Chrissy lobbying for greater assurances to the gun-wielding criminal that he'll have better odds of pulling off his next crime on an individual?

Crissy's rant

Poor Crissy. That damned second amendment always seems to get in the way of grand liberal utopian plans of the crime-free peace and harmony that would spring forth from a disarmed populace. Of course, giving me the ability to fend off a government that would try to impose such a ridiculous fantasyland is exactly why the founders put it there in the first place!

And FYI Crissy, Mitt Romney does not claim to be a "lifetime" member of the NRA. He is a "life" member (as am I). This is an official membership status within the NRA and means that you are a member from the point of application until the day you die. I was an annual member off and on for years until I became a life member at about the age of 35 (as I recall it cost about $750). Guess that makes me less of an NRA member, too, since I didn't come out of the womb with a membership card (although I may have been holding a gun :-))

Crissy's obviously just trying to get back his liberal bona fides after being smacked down by ma and pa Clinton.

you all

All your kind words (yes I'm southern) make me feel better about my CCW,,,,

few have no clue about how often I carry... I have no illusions or fantasy about my responsibility...

Yet I do it for myself and my family...and the general public if it comes to that....

Chris needs to be in jail instead of Donna Holman. He hates the Constitution and would do better in France where he can watch his savings be eaten up by the exchange rate. Maybe people there will listen.

Firearms are second only to

Firearms are second only to the Constitution in importance;  they are the peoples' liberty teeth.-George Washington

Not much more to add!

I want Matthews dis-mouthed.

So, Chris, you want the government to confiscate the firearms of law-abiding citizens, who pose absolutely no threat to any other law-abiding citizens. Fine.

When the police come knocking on your door and tell you they are there to search your house for guns, what, exactly, are you going to say to them?

None are so hopelessly enslaved as those who falsely believe they are free. -J.W. von Goethe

I wish more men and women

I wish more men and women carried guns.  There is no reason why decent folk should feel terrorized by criminals and guns are the solution.  I believe ANYBODY willing to learn how to use a gun should be able to carry and conceal one.

When I was a child growing up, I can remember my dad always taking his .45 Colt on vacations, road trips and even camping.  It always made me feel safer from criminals.  I do the same thing with my children; however, I prefer a Glock over the Colt.

I am PROUD to be an American.  People like Matthews don't LIKE people like me.

I'm proud to be an American, too, mostlymoderate.

I'm proud to be an American, too, mostlymoderate.  I'm probably somewhat like Matthews--a centrist Democrat--and though I may disagree with you in some areas, I certainly don't dislike you or people like you.

I also own a shotgun, know how to use it, and am an expert shot [or at least I was when I qualified with an M-14 in basic training.]

But I can't say that I would feel a lot safer if I assumed the overwhelming majority of citizens were walking the streets, sitting in school classes, or on buses, or airplanes, or going to church...or restaurants...or bars...or sporting events...or concerts...or court...while packing sidearms.

In the post Civil War west, many upstanding well behaved young cowboys would end a cattle drive at a terminus town like Dodge City, get paid, drink some whiskey, "hurrah" the town, gamble and raise hell, and then wind up shooting someone over a trivial insult.  Things didn't start settling down until ordinances were passed restricting the carrying of firearms within the town limits.

I have witnessed meaningless arguments between respectable appearing individuals escalate to a point where I believe if either had been armed, gunfire would have erupted.

That said, my views aren't completely set in stone.  There are situations where the pro-gun argument makes sense.  But do any of the concerns I have expressed give you pause?

Jer

Nope

Sounds a lot like gun-free D.C. on a Saturday night to me.

Also, I think you've watched too many westerns. Please provide a link to a historical reference supporting the claims you make about the rate of violence in the "wild west."

As a counter example, this book (http://www.sup.org/b...) is but one of many that puts the myth of the "wild west" into proper context. Oh, sorry, I know "moderates" like you and Crissy don't like to let facts get in the way of your narrative.

criminals, obeying gun laws?

Chris Matthews (who's SO in the bag for Democrats) thinks "criminals, rather than law-abiding citizens, will obey restrictions on gun ownership"?

That reminds me of the saying, "In Germany, there will be no revolution, for in Germany all revolutions are strictly forbidden." Cluelesss people are all the same.

No problem Chrissy, If all else fails and you're unarmed

you can always drown em' in your spittle.

"I want to see people disarmed."

Not in Arizona you won't see them!

From My Cold Dead Hands, You Stalinist F*ck!

I sent an email to NB

to inform them that Keith Olberman of MSNBC has become a regular diarist at Daily Kos and yet is allowed by MSNBC to co-anchor debates. This network has become shameless in its bias and I don't understand why more isn't being made of this by the Republican Party/candidates.

The Dems refuse to debate at Fox but the Repubs continue to debate at MSNBC despite their outrageous bias.

Can you imagine the stink the Dems would raise if O'Reilly was posting diaries at Red State or Little Green Footballs?

AND FOX DOES NOT ALLOW O'REILLY TO CO-ANCHOR NEWS OR PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES! And yet MSNBC allows KO to call himself a 'neutral newscaster' and has him anchoring debates.

If the Repubs continue to play nice like this and not call out MSNBC or the MSM on their outrageous bias, then they deserve to lose the general election.

Those Repub wusses who appear on Hardball never call Matthews on his bias. Not once during this Hardball segment about gun control did any of the guests challenge him.

What the hell is wrong with the Repubs? They allow the liberal memes to fly and never counter them or rebut them. I've lost my respect for the Republican party. Their representatives are neither forceful nor articulate enough when it comes to fighting back.

→ Granny gropers

Yeah Chrissy, that's the ticket.

Jump right in there with your suspension of probable cause and the Right to Bear Arms.  Chrissy, do you get off on watching grannies getting felt up in the streets?  You know your idea would devolve into the same PC crap that airports employ.

And squeal every time a foreign phone call routed through the US is monitored.

Chris, we only care what you think because we know the pack of hyenas you shill for.

The blog is, of course, about Matthews' business, but...

Note the words of the Rudy-backer. He thinks "Vermont carry" is a bad thing, just like Chrissy. Memo to Deroy: We have "a license" already. See Amendment 2.

Things like this are what worry conservatives like me about Rudy's campaign, even though it seems moribund currently. Why not let the Democrats push this Democrat idea? Do you see why a lot of us tend to call your candidate "a RINO" when you agree on this issue with a partisan-Democrat like Chris freakin' Matthews?

Matthews and the Bill of Vague Suggestions

You know what I think? In big cities they ought to check people on sidewalks like getting on airplanes.

So now Matthews wants to get rid of the FOURTH amendment, as well as the SECOND amendment?

Amendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Check out my exclusive edit of BBC News America's interview with Mrs Clinton: It's news to me!

The attack on the Fourth

Via the tax and spend war on (some...) drugs, has ALWAYS been deep-down another attack on the Second. In chess, I may not always be attacking your king, but I damn sure always want him checkmated & dead. Getting rid of pawns, rooks, bishops, queens, and knights is simply a means to the king's end.

Politics works the same exact way. There was no way to totally-attack the Second without first somehow eviscerating the Fourth, and the control-freakery of the tax and spend drugwar was always the perfect vehicle to get otherwise freedom-loving conservative types aboard, since guns & drugs don't-mix anyway. Pro-gun conservatives don't like hearing this, but their strong dislike of hearing it does not in any way diminish the factual truth of the situation.

Republicans are facist?

One of the cornerstones of a facist regime is to remove the right to bear arms from the people.
