Pot to Kettle? Shuster Calls O'Reilly 'Buffoon, Jerk'

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Candid criticism, or sour grapes towards a guy who's lapping MSNBC in the ratings? In any case, David Shuster and the rest of the Morning Joe crew took out after Bill O'Reilly this morning in the wake of the incident in which the Factor host was, shall we say, energetic in his efforts to speak with Barack Obama at a NH campaign event this weekend. Shuster called O'Reilly a "jerk" and "such a buffoon." Read accounts of the incident here, here and here.

Here is the way O'Reilly himself described the matter in a phone interview [FNC video here] with FNC's Brian Wilson:

BILL O'REILLY: We went over to the [Obama] Nashua event that Major Garrett just described and it was a big zoo, thousands of people there. And we set up our camera to try to get a question to Senator Obama. So a big guy comes over, about 6'8" according to the press reports, and he stands right in front of the Factor camera. So I asked him, fairly nicely, "you're blocking our shot, sir, you're going to have to move a little bit." And the cameraman that I had actually moved away from him. He moved right in front of the cameraman again, to block our shot. So I had to, um, gently remove him from that position, Brian [Wilson]."

BRIAN WILSON: There are reports there was a scuffle. Was there a scuffle?

O'REILLY: No. No scuffle at all. I just, ah, removed him from in front of the camera.

WILSON: We heard reports there may have been profanities uttered. Were there any profanities uttered?

O'REILLY: I might have called him an SOB. Possible [chuckles]. But nothing more than that.

WILSON: And there's also a report that the Secret Service had to restrain you. Did that happen?

O'REILLY: That's absolutely ridiculous. Because ten seconds after I gently removed the man from in front of our camera, I actually spoke to Barack Obama. And the Secret Service guys let me right by, and we had a nice little chat, which you'll hear on the Factor Monday night.

We'll be interested to get more of Bill's take on things on this evening's Factor. But in the meantime, Shuster left no doubt where he stands.

DAVID SHUSTER: I don't know if this is the time to talk about Bill O'Reilly but I've got a lot of things I want to say.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Get it out, David. It's OK, he's been troubled by it --

SHUSTER: Bill O'Reilly is a jerk, and that was proven this weekend. There was Bill O'Reilly at a Barack Obama event -- and look, I'm all for putting the microphone in the face of somebody you want to talk to. Bill O'Reilly shoved a guy, shoved a guy who was working for Barack Obama happened to be standing in a certain spot, and there's Bill O'Reilly saying "nobody gets in the way of the Factor's cameras."

So he pushes the guy. Obama doesn't know what's going on. Obama comes up. And what does Bill O'Reilly do? Does he ask some tough, penetrating question or some scandal he wants to follow? No. "Will you come on my show." Give me a break.

BRZEZINSKI: What-t-t-t?

SHUSTER: Give me a break. What a jerk. What a jerk. Fox News ought to be so embarrassed with this guy. I mean he shows up on the last weekend before New Hampshire. He pushes a guy. I mean --

JOE SCARBOROUGH: He also did the same thing to Hillary Clinton.

BRZEZINSKI: He's a cartoon character.

SHUSTER: He's a buffoon. He's such a buffoon. And everybody knows it.

}}---> Buffoon

So O'Reilly is a buffoon?  I'll bet PMSNBC would pay big bucks to find a couple of buffoons like O'Reilly.

Wasn't it Abe Lincoln, upon being told Gen. US Grant was a drunk, who said something like "I'd like to send a case of whatever he's drinking to each of my Generals"

I ♣ My Seal

Yes indeed, C A...I believe

Yes indeed, C A...I believe it was after the battle of Shiloh, in which the Confederate forces had surprised and routed Union troops on the first day of the battle only to be driven from the field the following day.  The initial disaster was said to be in part due to Grant's being somewhere up the river with a couple of bottles.

Regardless

When one looks up buffoon in the dicitionary, there's a collage of photos - Schuster;  O'Reilly; O'Donnell; and Matthews.  What more can one say.  Regarding O'Reilly: he's got producers to do his leg work - he needs to stop the Geraldo immitations and stick to his bread and butter.

Right On!

Indeed this is a redux of The Donald vs. Rosie. O'Reilly and Schuster deserve each other. I suggest they wrestle naked in a pool of mud. The loser has to stay off TV for a year. The winner is bannished for only six months.

I guess it says a lot about

I guess it says a lot about a network when a buffoon is beating the snot out of your ratings...

Yeah, I'm sure they're embarrassed alright. </sarc>

O'Reilly dominates.

Frankenlies.com: Al Franken debunked ...

That Shuster calls O'Reilly

That Shuster calls O'Reilly a buffoon is funny; that Mika the ditz calls him a "cartoon character" is hilarious!

Shuster's trying to ride the controversy comet to the top.

Honestly, this is the first time I've heard of David Shuster (rather I don't remember him). Where does he work that would allow him to call people names; as if it's news that successful reporter/pundits are buffoons ... by the nature of their business they are buffoons. Pundits & journalist have to be pushy if they ever expect to get a scoop. Therefor, being called a "buffoon" or a "jerk" is a compliment to the trade.

Here's Billo, you decide...

I noticed no video of Billo for everyone to see...

http://www.youtube.c...

you decide...Was Shuster right for going after Billo? Didn't Shuster work for Fox & is just trying to skewer Billo? Ratings go up if you start to attack the other side...

Billo is as wacky for ratings as the rest of 'em. At least he got what he wanted...Attention!

Does he think Obama is a good guy! Didn't Obama do drugs? Is that a ploy to get Obama on the Factor? Jeesh, ratings, money, advertising...

Exaggerating & Convoluting Liberal Media Bias.

Cartoon?

Actually, O'Reilly would make a funny cartoon, but Shuster's outrage is silly.

I enjoy watching Fox. And I think it's fair and balanced. But O'Reilly is all about O'Reilly. He grew up a bragging bully, and still thinks like one. The effect of that is really foolish when he's interacting with adults. I'm guessing his high ratings come from a waiting-for-a-train wreck audience--me included, occasionally.

It's true that O'Reilly is

It's true that O'Reilly is a bit of a egotistical bully, but that ain't the reason they call him a buffoon.  They call him a buffon because he happens to be a moderate (maybe somewhat right of center), as opposed to liberal, egotist.  "But he's no moderate, he's hyperconservative."  From their liberal viewpoint, yes, but not from the standpoint of his ratings.  If he were an extreme conservative (i.e., on the fringe), then he would be appealing only to the fringe, not the mainstream.  He gets his ratings because he happens to be more in line with mainstream America, while at the same time not suffering left-wing fools lightly.  So the Left despises him.  If he were a liberal egotist, then he would join the ranks of Bill and Hillary, Rosie, Baldwin, Clooney, et al., ad nauseam, all of whom aren't labeled as "buffoon" by the MSM.

This is from December,

This is from December, 19th.  I'm pretty crappy at math, but it seems the "buffoon" is beating all the cable news channels combined with  605 left over.  Hmmmm......

What can you say? The American people love a good buffoon.

Isn't Shuster Pee Wee

Isn't Shuster Pee Wee Herman reincarnated?  Also, doesn't Mika (the Twit) look like a puppet next to Scarborough being actuated by his hand?

Morning Joe Buffoons

I tried to watch some of this show this morning.

But Mika is so disgusting that I can't stay there very long.

She is posing, pursing her lips, squirming in the chair, and generally acting like a fool.

Shuster's contract at FNC was not renewed. He is lucky to have a job. His voice - piercing and shrill - is also enough to drive viewers away.

Check out...

Olbermannwatch.com  Go to the Jan. 2 re-cap of the show and click on the link.  You'll see Schuster the right-hand man to Olbermann.

Shuster

I think Davo has buffoon envy.

I don't blame O'reilly here.

I don't blame O'reilly here. I'd have done the same thing to someone who was deliberately trying to block my camera view.

Better to be a number one

Better to be a number one rated cartoon character than to be a side-kick cartoon character with no ratings. Right Mika?

I have no comment on Shuster, not worth my time.

OUCH!

That one hurt.

Ratings Envy...

How unbecoming, but it still does not surprise me.

Like it or not, The O'Reilly Factor has much higher ratings than any other cable news show, yet people who want to be leader of the most powerful nation on the planet won't go on lil ol' (6 foot, 5 inch) Bill O'Reilly's show. That should make us all wonder what those folks are made of. The last I checked, FNC did not have any weapons ready to launch at the USA. If they are afraid of O'Reilly and the rest of FNC, how can we expect them to confront those who would wish us genuine harm.

Two things if Obama was smart. One, he would apologize to O'Reilly for the actions of his supporter who tried to block the cameraman's view. Two, he would immediately go on the Factor for an interview by O'Reilly. Then, if Obama can answer O'Reilly's questions well, he'd get a bigger bounce in the polls than he did after last Thursday night in Iowa!

Just my $0.02

I don't think it's a

I don't think it's a question of "fearing" O'Reilly.  He's a capable interviewer, but he's not really that "tough" when questioning prominent politicians, Democrat or Republican.

The problem is his tendency to "smear" Democrats, but not Republicans, during his commentaries.  Thus, Gore was a "liar", Hillary "reckless" and "arrogant", Dean "dishonorable", Edwards a "charlatan", Dodd a "disgrace" [I think that was the term he used].  Why reward his behavior by going on his show?

Oh, and he claims he is 6' 4".

It can't be a kettle thing...

...because Shuster is a pansy.

So here's a great question. Which cartoon character does Shuster remind you of?

Beavis.

Beavis.

He reminds me more of Eddie

He reminds me more of Eddie Haskel from "Leave it to Beaver."

What's up...

with the EXTREMELY slow blinking of this clown? I've stopped now and again channel surfing and have watched for a couple of minutes and the only thing I could concentrate on is that weird slow blinking thing he has going on. That and he closes his eyes when talking...just plain creepy...
