The PC guy finally wins one! No, we're not cheering for political correctness here. I'm talking about those ads for Macintosh computers where the cool Mac guy always gets the better of the frumpy PC fellow.
When two college political leaders out in Iowa appeared on the Good Morning America screen today, I immediately suspected a set-up. I couldn't help but think that ABC had intentionally staged the political equivalent of the Mac ads, with the Dem as the Apple dude and the Republican cast as PC guy.
In the screencap, that's Atul Nakhasi, head of the U. of Iowa Dems, on the left and Greg Baker, Chairman of the U. of Iowa Republicans, on the right. Now, Nakhasi acquitted himself perfectly well, but as the segment unfolded it soon became clear that Baker was the star of this show.
View the video here, and enjoy Baker's good-humor and easy articulation.
Interviewed by ABC's Claire Shipman, Baker's cheerful very first line "it's beautiful living in Iowa" because of all the political and media attention, got things off to an upbeat start. Neither would endorse a particular candidate. Baker said there were five candidates he liked, jokingly adding that he'd probably end up voting for whichever one he saw last.
Greg Baker could go far. Let's hear it for GOP PC guy!

January 1, 2008 - 10:52 ET by OldSailor88I'm VERY conservative, and an independent thinker. I own a PC. For the most part all of my conservative friends are PC owners. Only my granola munching wannabe a rebel friends own Mac. All of them are irritatingly liberal. But I love 'em anyway!
Happy New Year!

I have a problem with pure Right/Left wingers; if a bird had two left wings (or right), it would fly around in circles. We might name it the intransigent cuckoo bird.
Now as far as Mac vs PC, I use the one that poses the least amount of problems.
For the record Vista was named by many as the worst product of the year ... I guess PC's are PC.

January 1, 2008 - 11:26 ET by Jack BauerVista works fine for me.
Surely the Democrat Party 2.01 is the worst product of 2007?
It's OS (Operating Socialism) slows the economy to a crawl...
It's infected by lefty viruses...
It's always crashing...
And every upgrade just makes things worse.

Isn't the youth vote like the Cubs?
January 1, 2008 - 12:47 ET by Wineguy13Every election is the one where the youth is going to make a difference. However, it never actually happens. And it won't until these precious, self-absorbed voters are allowed to vote on MySpace, or can text their vote to 1-888-Nanny-State. This youth vote, by and large, has a stake in continued government growth and a sharp idealism, which is to be expected but not nourished. I await with bated breath the foundations of democracy being shaken by the youth vote which will never come, God willing.

Neither college dude spoke like champs but Baker the republican was the most uncomfortable. He stuttered and slurred words. That's fine, I would have done worse.
My point is that Baker was not the star.

To the contrary I said that whereas I suspected it when the guests came on it soon became clear that, given Greg Baker's qualities, this was not an anti-GOP set-up.

I guess they must have run out of time to give equal time to the Republican. Gosh darn it, not again! Awe, geee. Maybe ABC will be fair and balanced next time, wink wink.
