Dowd Reinforces Rush on Hillary Looks

Talk about the dog that didn't bark . . .

As soon as I realized that Maureen Dowd's column of today, "Rush to Judgment" was indeed about Rush Limbaugh's recent observations about Hillary's looks, I braced myself for the backlash.

Surely Dowd would seek to unload on Rush for having said, in commenting on an unflattering photo of Hillary [displayed here] that turned up on Drudge, "will this country want to actually watch a woman get older before their eyes on a daily basis?” Added Rush “men aging makes them look more authoritative, accomplished, distinguished. Sadly, it’s not that way for women, and they will tell you.” And Hillary “is not going to want to look like she’s getting older, because it will impact poll numbers, it will impact perceptions [so] there will have to be steps taken to avoid the appearance of aging.”

And so I continued to read, and wait, and wait -- for the comeback that never came.

To the contrary, Dowd seconded Rush's read, added some analysis of her own of Hillary's looks . . . and ended with a hit on Hillary rougher than anything Rush had said.

Excerpts [emphasis added]:

  • Yet it’s true that looks matter in politics, even though Abe Lincoln still ranks as our favorite president. J.F.K.’s tan and Nixon’s 5-o’clock shadow helped turn that 1960 debate in Kennedy’s favor, just as Gore’s waxy orange makeup and condescending mien hurt him in a debate with W.
  • It is also true that perfecting the outer shell has become an obsession in this country.
  • Women are still scrutinized more critically on their looks, which seem to fluctuate more on camera, depending on lighting, bloating and wardrobe.
  • Mitt Romney, Barack Obama and John Edwards almost always look good, and pretty much the same, in dark suits or casual wear. Fred Thompson always looks crepuscular and droopy. Often Hillary looks great, and sometimes she looks tired, heavier or puffier.
  • Since this is the first time we’ve had a woman who was a serious contender for president, it’s been an adjustment to watch her more changeable looks, and to see the lengths she goes to get the right lighting and to make the right wardrobe choices.
  • Hillary doesn’t have to worry about her face. She has to worry about her mask. Back in the ’92 race, Clinton pollsters devised strategies to humanize her and make her seem more warm and maternal. Fifteen years later, her campaign is devising strategies to humanize her and make her seem more warm and maternal.
  • The public still has no idea of what part of her is stage-managed and focus-grouped, and what part is legit. It’s pretty pathetic, at this stage of her career, that she has to wage a major offensive, by helicopter and Web testimonials, to make herself appear warm-blooded.

Ouch.

In sum: Rush makes comments that you might have thought would bring down liberal wrath, and instead, a leading arbiter of Upper West Side opinion seconds his notion. Talk about being on the cutting edge of societal evolution . . .

In no time at all, HRC's

In no time at all, HRC's defenders, after calling Rush sexist, will be calling MoDo "snarky" or jealous, and I'm betting every other commentary on Dowd's column either begins or ends with "Merroww!!"

Oh, that picture says,

Oh, that picture says, where's my coffee, coffee, coffee, half my kingdom for a cup of coffee.

The commentary aside, even Jimmy Carter was the amazing aging man in just 4 years.  BJ Clinton seemed to age before our eyes as well over the 8 years.  I don't remember Repub presidents aging like this, W hasn't really aged. Maggie Thatcher in England didn't seem to age badly either.  It seems that the POTUS position really does a number on Dems.  Does Hillary, the former co-POTUS really want another term?  Could she even handle any more rapid aging?

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity. dscott's corollary: The line between malice and stupidity is called depraved indifference.

Call us shallow, but like

Call us shallow, but like it or not, appearances matter to Americans (as a group) when it comes to elections. My only concern with HRC is the "phony" factor. Maybe she should just shun the hyper-makeup and look more natural, then people wouldn't gasp when they saw her without it. And what does she do to plump up her cheeks in those appearances? Her face au naturel looks like a deflated ballloon, for crying out loud!!

Rush said there would be great effort on her part to avoid the look of aging if she's elected. He was absolutely right: look at what she goes through NOW to look younger than she is! Does anyone think that would change once (heaven forbid) elected????

You're shallow

None of the candidates are lookers. Hillary looks like a sixty-year-old woman, if not better than most. There are some outstandingly bad photos of Pamela Anderson sans make-up out there. Picking on some age lines is sexist and, yes, shallow.

Dowd Report: All MoDo, All The Time

Agreed. I actually though

Agreed. I actually though Rush made a fairly cogent and accurate point for once, although I would have liked to see him be a bit more critical. But looks are important, sadly, and Rush's statement just lends further credence to the fact that the average undecided voter is a lumbering, unprincipled simpleton who takes the stupidest possible b-lls--t into account when s/he goes to the polls.

pharisee that ever ransacked a Bible to rake the promises to himself

Face looks like a catcher's

Face looks like a catcher's mitt.

Presidencies heap decades on a person's appearence (have you ever seen the "before" and "after" pics of a president? It's scary. It's like they sold years of their lives to some supernatural being).

Can you imagine what this broad would look like after a term? She would make Helen Thomas look like Cindy Crawford.

Hillary is the most

Hillary is the most unwanted candidate for president according to recent poll, Dowd is the most unwanted liberal pundit by the...Clinton camp. I smell a big catfight, and who do you think is going to win? Meoowww. Rush you're off the hook now.

Dowd was right in all points she asserted, except the first one. Algore and Flip-flop Kerry were "good-looking" on TV and they had better oratorical skills than GWB, but GWB has the character and connected well with people.

You cannot be serioius?

"Kerry were "good-looking""

I always thought Kerry was one of the ugliest people I have ever seen. He reminds me of "GUMBY".  I could see the signs every time he appeared..."GUMBY" FOR PRESIDENT".  The Goracle, not quite as bad as Kerry but not a good looker either. Especially now that he has "warmed" a bit.

Jeez, I think I'm starting to feel a little "wierd" now talking about the looks of other men. I think I will go brush my teeth and take a shower now.

voodoo, my friend you

voodoo, my friend you didn't read in between the lines. The "good-looking" came from leftoids. How they adored their own democrack candidates, and hated every inch of GW's personality and character.

Postponed the shower and brushing of teeth, you might cause global warming and deplete water resources. Kerry is going to throw his war "medals" for calling him GUMBY.

LOL! I can even see Kerry

LOL! I can even see Kerry whining: "I'm Gumby dammit!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:

"God is not dead, nor doth he sleep;

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,

With peace on earth, good will to men." -H.W. Longfellow

You rang?

C'mon, Kerry had Lerch's strapping good looks.

Forget the hot sports car... that's what the ladies want!

Hillary could turn this into a winner!

If Hillary really had some guts, she could turn this into a winner.  All she has to say is: "Hey, I've earned all of these lines on my face, being married to Bill all these years." I'm sure that women would empathize with her and the men would just smile.  Alas, Hillary will probably fire her make-up person and move on.

Democrats: Specializing in "high tech lynching" since 1987.

Count me...

You can include me in those group of Americans that don't want to see this socialist gasbag as POTUS even if she begins looking YOUNGER every day!!

Even if she goes from her butt-ugly look now to looking like Charlize Theron by the end of her (God forbid) years in office I could care less.  Our country will simply not survive if the Clintons retake the WH.

And if you can't see, from his obnoxious, egotistical, and ill-advised statements (like suggesting that Bush XLIII would go with him on an around-the-world mission as soon as Shillary takes office) that Bill will actually be running the government as POTUS, you are quite naive.

Rush Is Wrong

I understand the parts you highlighted, but to think that Dowd is agreeing with Rush is completely missing the tone of the column. Dowd thinks the emphasis on looks is terrible and shouldn't be made. Yes, she picks on Hillary, but because of her lack of substance in her campaign, not the lack of product on her face.

As I say in my blog today, Dowd ridicules people that are basing decisions on appearances.

Dowd Report: All MoDo, All The Time

Nice Spin, But...

you need to combine Hillary's handlers efforts to project a "warm" and "human" image of her with her lack of both substance and experience. If you do this properly, the only conclusion you can draw is that she does not any qualifications to be President of the United States of America.

The ONLY reasons she is running is because of her (married) last name and a sycophant news media that won't seriously question her about such things as her utter absence of qualifications for any political office, let alone President of the United States of America.

Just my $0.02

Nearly Impossible To Refute

That is a pretty ironclad argument. Hillary's position boils down to "I deserve it for putting up with Bill."

Dowd Report: All MoDo, All The Time

LOL!! I always thought that

LOL!! I always thought that John Kerry looked like the creeper from Scooby Doo!!

Dick Cheney is MY HERO!!

I think you....

....all have it wrong. I believe MoDo secretly has the HOTS for Rush. Hey...it could happen!

I am somewhat surprised

I am somewhat surprised about Dowd, then again she is rooting for Obama in my opinion.

As for Hillary, it is what is inside that counts, it shows on the outside, no matter the age, people either know you are sincere or phony and people know she is the latter...no matter what she attempts to do.

Evil is as evil does....which is timeless and she wears it well.
