It's official: Time magazine hates Dick Cheney.

Last week, I noted here that two of Time's Top 10 Editorial Cartoons of 2007, including it's # 1 pick, took shots at the Vice-President. This morning, two Time editors turned up on the Today show to discuss more picks from Time's collection of 50 Top 10 lists. And speaking of taking shots . . . .

View video here.

Today weekend anchor Amy Robach's guest was Time's Arts & Entertainment Editor Belinda Luscombe [pictured below]. After discussing the Top Song of the year ["Rehab" by defiant druggy Amy Winehouse] and Top Gadget [iPhone], talk turned to the Top Magazine Cover.

AMY ROBACH: Magazine covers. This is an interesting choice. You all chose Dick Cheney from Texas Monthly. Why? Well I see why [bursts into laughter].

BELINDA LUSCOMBE: You have to know of course that we discounted all Time covers. We would have liked to have gone with one of ours but it seemed too boasty. So we went with Texas Monthly. It's great. It's a Dick Cheney, with a smoking gun, and saying -- it's an homage to an old National Lampoon cover which says, you know, if you don't buy this magazine we'll shoot this dog. And this one is if you don't buy this magazine Dick Cheney will shoot you.

ROBACH: And I think he's actually grimacing there, which is an added bonus.

LUSCOMBE: This is clearly not a real photo, but it's very well-done Photoshopping. It's very nicely done, very clever, and the fact that it's Texas --

ROBACH: I'm sure Dick Cheney might have another opinion on that one, but no, that's great.

It was actually a double-barreled assault on the Bush administration this morning. Before the Luscombe segment, Lester Holt interviewed Catherine Sharick, Executive Producer of Time.com. Time's choice for the Top Scandal of the Year? Alberto Gonzales's resignation in connection with the firings of eight U.S. attorneys.

How weak is that? Even Time's blurb on the "scandal" recognizes that "it remains unclear who ordered the firings or why," and that at worst, "critics contend some of the attorneys — six of whom had recently received outstanding job-performance ratings — were fired as retribution for prosecuting Republicans or for failing to prosecute Democrats."

Time's picks might be weak, but its animus toward the Bush administration couldn't be much stronger.

Offended

Correct me if I'm wrong. Woudn't this same Amy or Belinda be "offended" or "outraged" if similar cheap shots were taken at say Barack Obama or Hillary ?

Yeah, a cover featuring a

Yeah, a cover featuring a sneering Hillary with the headline "Buy this magazine or Hillary Clinton will have you whacked and dumped in a public park" probably wouldn't be as well received.

Better yet, a picture of

Better yet, a picture of Bill holding his crotch captioned... "Buy this magazine or Bill Clinton will shoot you in the face"

You'd think that stealing

You'd think that stealing classified documents from the National Archives and subsequently destroying them might be a little more scandalous than firing people you're entitled to fire, but that's just me.

Especially when you

Especially when you consider it was done to keep the 9/11 commission from seeing them, and that the 9/11 investigation was supposedly the most important investigation in the history of the world according to democrats and journalists.

Revealing national secrets

Or perhaps, just perhaps, the NYT revealing our wire-tapping secrets so that the terrorists can change their habits and avoid detection -- thus endangering all of us.

Where a Mrs C. word blacks ops team burgled Mr O's kindergarten to dig up incriminating records from when he was 4 years old?

Don't we need a Special Prosecutor with subpena powers; plus a Senate hearing, to get to the big bottom of this?

Wow.

You said 'colored', so you are a racist, and you also said 'man' so you are also sexist.

For shame.

I ♣ My Seal

I just love the: we the

I just love the: we the North East liberals are soooo superior, sound to their voices. That condescending look down their nose to all of you Republicans/ southerners/ hillbillies.

After living in the New York area for 15 years, I would hear it all the time. When people would find out that I was Southern I would get one of those, hoodeee howareyou (in their best southern accent). Then I would give in my best Jersey/NY accented line: Howudoing there A$$hole.

I married a NJ woman and its only after we moved back down south that she told me: now I understand you better, almost every one has manners, and very few jerks, people are pleasant and friendly.

The attitude of these women are the perfect example of all liberals in the North East.

Like John F.. Kerry: I’m gona get me a hunting license..

They point their finger at us and laugh.. Well with the ratings dropping like a stone, I think that we will get the last laugh.

"...it's very well-done

"...it's very well-done Photoshopping. "It's very nicely done, very clever, and the fact that it's Texas --" - Luscombe (emphasis in original)

Oh, yeah, Belinda, that's very nice, very clever. HAHAHAHA

I wonder how they'd like this.

The first "created caption" is "Hillary hanged this photo in Bill's office and signed "You screw, - you die. Keep your birdie in your pants, honey".

They would scream bloody murder! And that's just a website...not a magazine cover!

Luscombe also says:
"it's an homage to an old National Lampoon cover".....

Oh, right, I see....everyone knows and remembers that, don't they? Well, maybe not the "hicks" out there..but their Manhattan and Left Coast "sophisticated" pals will yuk it up, so who cares??

People like that really make me sick sometimes.

mb

I picked up on that photoshop comment as well...I like the one you posted.

While there's absolutely NO media bias in this cover *cough, cough*....I have to say I like it, for reasons of nostalgia.

I was first introduced to NB's during the Cheney shooting incident...I think the blog was something like "I'd rather go hunting with Dick Cheney than for a car ride with Ted Kennedy".

... and the fact that it's

Not sure if they're amazed that Cheny is being mocked in his home state or that they have computers in Texas.  Probably both.

Cheney was born in Nebraska

Cheney was born in Nebraska but grew up in Casper, Wyoming.

The hunting accident occurred in Texas.

Either that Leftist Time magazine lackey is a foreigner or she has a Martha Stewart sized affected accent.  Either way, what a phony effete elite snipe.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

This dingbat probably can't

This dingbat probably can't operate a gas pump.

Now if that was a photo of

Now if that was a photo of Dick after just having kicked in the door at the DNC headquarter's then,...... allright let me shut up.

"You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious. "

And then does that line

And then does that line from "Predator": "KNOCK KNOCK" before he blows that guy away.

Cover makes me feel secure

I always find liberals amusing in reaching back to 20 years like a nagging wife in a fight. Firings no one cares about and Dick popping a guy with birdshot when the guy said it was not Cheney's fault.

Liberals think Cheney on this cover is sinister, but as an American I look at it and find it quite comforting. I voted for Dick because I knew he would pull the trigger where it needed to be pulled. That keeps things like 9 11 from repeating. Dick stands guard so I can sleep more sound at night and concern myself with personal matters.

Having been shot at and shot a few times in my life, I personally since Dick hunts around my parts often enough invite him to hit me with some #8 as sure it stings some, but it would be quite an honor to say Dick Cheney dusted you with a load of uplands.

All magazine covers like the above do is create an even greater adoration for Dick Cheney in the people who love him, because we love guns and love America.
As Teddy Roosevelt always said, "Burn some powder and allot of it".

Ain't America and Dick Cheney Great!

(That ought to be a great commie blue quote to show up on Huffington or Kos to show what redlands wildcats live in these here parts know as the Newsbuster's Corral. lol)

PS: That chick with the windshield glasses, mop hairdo, grill guard mouth........man that is really scarey cuddling up to you in the dark and waking up to that in the morning.

just a thought

"While there's absolutely NO media bias in this cover *cough, cough*....I have to say I like it, for reasons of nostalgia."

I like it, too. It really draws a stark contrast between our leadership and theirs... I mean, c'mon... could you really do that cover with, say, John Edwards? How about Harry Reid?

It reminds me of a very well-done satire in The Onion back during the runup to the 2004 elections...

"Cheney Vows To Attack U.S. If Kerry Elected"

"It would be a tragedy to suffer another attack on
American soil, let alone one perpetrated by an enemy as well-organized
and well-equipped as I am. My colleagues and I urge voters to keep
their safety in mind when they go to the polls."

"Make no mistake: If Kerry becomes president, no one will be safe from
me," Cheney told reporters. "Businesses, places of worship, schools,
public parks: No place will offer you refuge. A vote for Kerry is a
vote to die in your own bed at the hands of Dick Cheney."

Read the whole thing if you're up for a giggle...

Reality Check

Dick Cheney is loved in Wyoming

People love him in Wyoming, but he is hated in all the so called intellectual circles of NYC and SF, etc.

Why is he hated? Because Dick Cheney is clearly smarter than all these effete intellectuals who couldn't use an ounce of logic to figure out how to fold a paper bag.

Down here in Texas...

Down here in Texas, we all thought that the Texas Monthly cover was pretty funny.  One thing you should know about Texans, is that we really don't take ourselves all that seriously.  We also know about guns and hunting, so we don't get all that cracked up about the occasional hunting accident.

I actually like that cover

I actually like that cover also. It shows a true conservative. Tough, able to handle a firearm, and deteremined. I smile as I envision who he has just let loose on. Makes me also realize I have to re-up my NRA dues!

It is a hell of a good cover. Now think of Obama or Edwards or Shrillary doing that and you laugh because you know that they don't even know which end of the barrell the rounds come out of.

Time magazine asserts:

Time magazine asserts: "[C]ritics contend some of the attorneys — six of whom had recently received outstanding job-performance ratings — were fired as retribution for prosecuting Republicans or for failing to prosecute Democrats."

Evidence?  I haven't read the Time editorial, which Time evidently considers "straight" "news", but I suspect that neither Time nor the "critics" (i.e., Time magazine and other like-minded leftist kook conspiracy theorists) provide any actual evidence to support the allegation made by Time and the "critics".

Aw C'mon!

That mag cover is hilarious!
