Matthews's Hint to Hillary: Bring Back Mr. STD

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Claiming that someone is less popular than venereal disease is a quintessential hit below the belt. So if you were counseling a candidate to hit her opponent above the belt, the last person you'd suggest she hire is a guy who just compared someone to an STD . . . unless you're Chris Matthews.

Matthews's advice to Hillary Clinton is to hit Obama above the belt . . . by bringing in Paul Begala, the man who just this week used the VD comparison to slur President Bush.

The Hardball host was a guest on this morning's Today.

MEREDITH VIEIRA: Last debate [today] for the Democrats before the Iowa caucuses and the heat is on for Hillary Clinton. Do you expect her to come out swinging?

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well everybody's wondering where she's going to swing. Will it be above the belt or below the belt? These shots at what Obama said in kindergarten and what he may have done as a teenager look like they're below the belt and her people are delivering them. She's got to come out with a clean hit if she's gonna hit him.

VIEIRA: Obama's people said it was an act of desperation by her camp. Is that the kind of attack, particularly about Obama's past drug use, that could backfire on her?

MATTHEWS: You know, Obama represents optimism and idealism, and he got the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval from Oprah this past weekend. He looks pure as the driven snow right now. And for her to go after her on character right now I think is a big mistake. She has got to go after him on his shallow record as a public official, the brief time he's had in public life and his lack of having accomplished much in public life. She's got to hit him where everybody says "fair hit, good shot."

VIEIRA: You know, you mentioned Oprah, which is his secret weapon and not so secret weapon. On Hillary's side you have her husband, Bill Clinton, who's very frustrated with the way the campaign's going. what can he do to help her turn things around? Is there anything he can do?

MATTHEWS: What he ought to do is get Paul Begala to come back and work in the campaign. She's got a lot of hard-hitters around her, but no one with any heart.

What? Bring back Paul Begala for purposes of hitting above the belt, for taking fair hits? Paul Begala, whose talent for the cheap and vulgar shot was on display just this week? As noted here, appearing on CNN on Monday, Begala had this to say about the relative popularity of Hillary and President Bush:

BEGALA: Hillary Clinton in some Republican areas is unpopular. George W. Bush across America, he would poll behind several different forms of venereal disease in most of this country. I mean, they hate Bush!

Is that Chris's idea of a "fair hit, good shot"?

Oh yeah,

That's exactly what Hillary needs, a chance to look meaner and nastier. By all means.

I guess there's a reason Matthews is a talking head (or some other orifice) and not a campaign manager.

Let Hillary be Hillary!

It's like we've said all along. When they let Reagan be Reagan, he won big. But when they let Hillary be Hillary, she'll torpedo herself with her snarl.

(Pun alert) One little prick will pop Hillary's balloon.

If Matthews was her campaign

If Matthews was her campaign mamager you would only get a press release from him every now and then. But, with him in a position of 'newscaster' he can advertise, praise, worship, and compliment her every day. As a plus she doesn't even have to open her "donated" pot of gold to pay for any of it.

Oh, right

One can only hope....

The HRC campaign needs the "class" that Begala will add.

Paul Begala....Master of the "Clean Hit".....LOL

MB: thanks for the heads-up on the bad link. It's working now.

Who here is naive enough to

Who here is naive enough to think that Mrs. Bill Clinton wouldn't get dirtier as time went on and her poll numbers started doing circles in the bowl?

Not me.  Stand by, Barak Hussein, Mrs. Clinton is fixin' to unleash hell on you and every one of your ancestors all the way back to the stone age.

You can't unring a bell

Speaking of dirty tactics, the Clinton campaign "disavowed" the drug charges made by one of it's campaigners.

Who here is naive enough to believe it wasn't a deliberate tactic, authorized from the top of the campaign?

RJ, two words

"Plausible Deniability."

But let's face it, no one is in the dark about what Her Royal Clintoness wants done:

It's Only A Matter Of Time

It's only a matter of time before the Clintons start to heave the real mud. My advice to the Obama campaign, toughen up your game and don't let them knock you off stride. In fact, right now you have them bouncing off the ropes and swinging wildly trying to deck you. If you keep standing tall, keep staying on message, and don't try to 'out mud-sling' them, you just might shock yourself at what happens. Hillary has given everyone an arsenal of pie-in-the-sky ideas that would choke a horse, whether it be terrorism, war in Iraq, taxes, health care, or education - none of which, by the way, enables her to shine. She's a socialist through and through, and as such, as an Independent, I'd rather see her knocked out in the primaries, then get to the general election.

Barak

Barak may be smarter than we think. Perhaps he anticipated a Hillary meltdown, because so far he has stayed away from being mean and nasty (not sure if he is capable of that anyway). It may pay off for him as Democrats realize she ain't Bill Clinton or have had enough of their lies and excuses.

It sort of reminds me of

It sort of reminds me of the line Kurt Russell spoke in the movie "Tombstone": "Tell 'em I'm comin' and Hell's comin' with me."

I guess Hillary could say that too. :)

Anybody see the flush handle

Anybody see the flush handle on that toilet mouth?

Hillary On Experience

Attacking on experience is not a good idea for the Hillary campaign either. If Democratic candidates start asking about Hillary's actual (as opposed to fictional) experience it quickly becomes apparent that the empress has no clothes.

Her experience will be less of an issue against Republicans because there will be huge policy differences avaliable for name-calling. But Hillary has to be very careful in attacking Democrats because her experience is all tied directly to riding her husband's coattails. Independent accomplishments come down to winning a hand-picked New York Senate seat after all of the competitors stepped aside.

Ugh

Pils,

My McSkillet Burrito is now all over my desk thanks to your mention of Hillary with no cloth...shoot there I go again.  Excuse me while I get some paper towels.

Since government is coercion, politics is largely the exercise of deception regarding the intended use of coercion - George Orwell

the empress has no clothes

pilsener, what a horrible thought, ugghh!  As for accomplishments she has none, Hillarycare was a failure, she was flotus for 8 years handling never ending bimbo eruptions, that's it.  Yeah, bring back Mr. STD Begala(you could show a movie on his forehead), he's just a disgusting human being.

Begala

Is angry.Because he suffers from a VD of the mouth he is trying to inject that in his arguments.Sorry Paul see a physician.Keep your clap trap closed. If this sounds offensive sorry I suffer from LWDS.Actually I think Begala in HRC camp would hurt her.His mouth would cause more trouble than help his brain could bring.

Class

Paul Begala brings typical "liberal" class and maturity to the public square. And why shouldn't he be out there with Hillary. They are cut from the same cloth. But considering what Begala says in public, I don't want to imagine a private conversation between these two dirty mouths.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Begala

To me Begala is a left wing scut as is HRC.There is a differense between left wing and liberals.Liberals are a dying breed.Lefties have taken over the Dems.If Begala joins HRC that will hurt her.Not that it hurts my feelings.I agree that they are the same. They just care about control and allowing no dissent.

Old Yeller

Yea Matthews, like the Clinton team never thought of adding Mr. Warmth to their roster.

They are dumb but not that dumb, Begala and his evil twin Carville were given the Old Yeller treatment long ago.

Look for Hilary to cut a deal

I look for Hillary to cut a deal with Edwards or Richardson to drop out of the race and join her team/endorse her. Desperate times call for desperate measures. She'll do anything to keep from being the next name on the list of Democratic losers: Mike Dukaka/Al "lockbox" Gore/John "haircut" Kerry...
