Imus Returns: 'Cheney Still A War Criminal, Hillary Still Satan'

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Returning to the airwaves this morning after a seven-month exile, Don Imus seemed intent on demonstrating two things. First, that he was unequivocally contrite concerning the comments he had made about the Rutgers University women's basketball players that resulted in his firing. Second, his contrition notwithstanding, he wasn't going to change his irreverent ways when it came to the country's political leaders.

To prove his iconoclastic bona fides, Imus concluded his monologue by observing "Dick Cheney is still a war criminal, and Hillary Clinton is still Satan."

Listen to audio here [with apologies for the mediocre sound quality.]

But before ending on that defiant note, he took several minutes to describe his meeting with the women of the Rutgers team, and the way the entire experience had changed him.

Excerpts from Imus's remarks:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

  • As most of you know, I haven't talked to anyone. I didn't see any point in going on some sort of a Larry King tour to offer some lame excuses for making a reprehensible and inexcusable remark about innocent people who did not deserve to be made fun of.
  • I think what happened is about what should have happened. One has to realize and I certainly do that you don't get to decide, nor should you, how the news media is going to treat a remark you made, the kind of remark I made. You don't get to decide whether they're going to put it in context. You don't get to whine and complain if you pick up the New York Times, and in an essay about the wonderful, brilliant legal mind of Martin Garbus you read that what you said is a racist tirade. And every time I would start to get pissed off about that, I would remind myself that if I hadn't said what I said, then we wouldn't be having this discussion, and I wouldn't have to deal with that, and the women at Rutgers wouldn't have to deal with it.
  • Les Moonves [CBS president] could not have been more honorable and more straightforward and more decent and more honest in dealing with me. There was not at any point that he said "oh, everything's going to be fine," or whatever. We understood the gravity of the remark; we understood the consequences for the young women at Rutgers. And we all recognized, I certainly did, that it was just a matter of time before he did what he had to do.
  • We now have the opportunity to have a better program, to obviously diversify the cast, I mean that just makes sense, but the program is not going to change. It was a great radio program. It's on a better radio station, one of the great iconic radio stations in the history of broadcasting, WABC [offers live streaming of show] in New York, I mean, you couldn't make that up. And you know I have this special place in my heart, Charles and I do, for RFD-TV, already in 30 million homes, and if you don't have it on your cable system, you call them and tell them you want it.

At that point, Imus set the bar mighty high for the way not only he but his crew and guests would conduct themselves going foward.

I will never say anything in my lifetime that will make any of these young women at Rutgers regret or feel foolish that they accepted my apology and forgave me. And no one else will say anything on my program that will make anybody think that I didn't deserve a second chance.

That newly-instituted 21-second tape delay could get a work-out.

It was a bit later that Imus ended his remarks by flying his flag of impudence in the face of political leaders.

But other than that, not much has changed. Dick Cheney is still a war crimina; Hillary Clinton is still Satan . . . and I'm back on the radio!

Schmuck

Now that this schmuck is back on radio and Curtis and Kuby have been taken off the air, I have no idea who to listen to from 6am-9am.

Imus is back

I echo your sentiments, Long Island Pete.

I only liked Imus back when he was a DJ out of New York City in the 70's.

I have a funny feeling the talk station I listen to -- out of Boston -- riding to work has Imus back on it, because they have been announcing that the guy I listen to now, Michael Graham, is moving to 9-12.
Oh well. I guess I am switching stations this morning.

I must need glasses

I must need glasses Toddon..

For a second I thought you wrote

Imus is BLACK!

Now that would be some new show stunt. No?

Actually, I'm working right across the street from the studio where the new Imus show is being taped... I live in NYC. I was walking by this morning and seeing an Imus poster inside the lobby of a building, and camera people and cops, etc., on the streets. Had no idea he was back on the air until I went online and got the news.

And wow, so is it true?? Is Imus really black now ???? :p

MrShy

If Team America can turn an actor into a "Towel Head" (no bigotry here, just stating a fact) then I'm sure Imus could be given ..er some (or a) "soul". :-)

If there was a movie that screams sequel...

T.A.W.P. is it! They hinted at it in the "bonus features" of the DVD. But I haven't heard anything about a rematch.

I do miss the "derka derka" Troll slapdowns around NB. hehe...

You've got me stumped.... what actor and movie was this? And "Team America"?? Maybe I need another cup of coffee, sorry :p

(There WAS a movie in the 80's about a white kid who turns black... or something... forgetting the name.)

I'm with you Todd. I much

I'm with you Todd.

I much prefer Michael Graham's style and humor.  I can understand that he's extremely happy that he doesn't have to get up in the morning to do the morning drive time, but I'll miss his show.

Going to have to find another station to listen to on the way to work.

Imus Returns

With all due respect to Curtis & Kubie, while they owned the local tri-state area morning talk, their coverage of national issues was always an also-ran.   Look at Imus' guests today:  Sens. McCain & Dodd, Mary Matlin & James Carville, presidential historian Dr. Doris Kearnes-Goodwin, and the great Levon Helms Band.   As good as C&K are (and I predict, will be again), they can't touch that line up!

The ratings will bear out how successful this will be; CBS Radio and MSNBC will be watching, too.

C&K never had the chance to

C&K never had the chance to go national and thus would stick to some local news because that is what New Yawkers wanted to hear. It couldnt be all national all the time. I hope this winds up biting WABC in the ass, because I for one will not listen to a grumpy old fool, with oatmeal running down his chin, saying Cheney is a war criminal with no facts to back it up.

I don't care what he calls

I don't care what he calls Cheney - he's not running for anything - Hillary is and he is capable of crushing her campaign more than it recently has been.

He is also a major boost for John McCain and his campaign. With Imus and the endorsement of the Manchester Union we may be watching a major comeback for McCain. In a field where none of the candidates are ideal you need the candidate that will win next November.

The delay is new?

I thought a delay was SOP for radio hosts on such shows, in case someone curses, etc. Is the 21 second part the new thing?

The old delay was 5-7 seconds.

Ah, thanks.

That, or his 1.3 (plus or minus one...) rating vie for funniest aspect of his return, for me. It's rumored RFDtv already bleeped the word "hell."

Free Speech

"We understood the gravity of the remark..."  I believe he's referring to the 'nappy-headed ho remark'...not the 'war criminal' or 'satan' remark....right?  What's that? Why is one vitriolic remark any worse than another?

We understand, Don, you want to keep your job so you apologize to the ladies, kiss the bosses foot and go on with your ranting...more power to you.  But don't you dare say anything remotely racist, homophobic, or anti-islamish....

mattm....

Yeah, but slander and spit vitriolic, hateful words at Bush, Cheney & Co. till the cows come home... in fact, we'll throw in bonus incentives of 2 million dollars for every 1,000 hit jobs on anything Conservative.

RFDTV Simulcast

I was shocked to see that RFDTV was the station carrying the simulcast.  They have gotten more into entertainment-type TV lately with buying the Branson theater that used to belong to Ray Stevens and broadcasting the performances.  I would not consider RFDTV a risk-taking company.  They must be or they would not have taken on this challenge.

My husband loves RFDTV, primarily the auctions.  Now that Imus is back on he will watch it for the Hillary bashing fest that will happen every morning.

I'm not an Imus fan but I'm glad he is back on the air because I don't want any politician to be able to FORCE a voice off the air.  The marketplace does that, not Hillary Clinton.

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

???

I don't get it, he's an arrogant, condescending, sophomoric old geezer who's time (the 60s) is past. Why does anyone care what he has to say......What?...He said Hillary was satan?....Uh, never mind, I like his message.

Listened to the first couple

Listened to the first couple of hours of the Imus show this morning and found it dull.  He will need to pick up the pace in the days to come.  (Also, live music doesn't translate so well on the radio, and I do not have the RFD station.)  For Imus, ratings may be a much bigger problem than Rev Al.

As far as I can tell Imus

As far as I can tell Imus has never been on the radio in the Houston area.  I have seen him a few times for a short while on TV.  I don't get the appeal of this knucklehead.

A man in NYC dressed up like cowboy? That's pretty gay if you ask me.  But then again..NYC and all.  I shouldn't expect much.

i, for one, am glad the i-man is back ....

i don't agree with everything he says, but i do like his in-your-face opinions ... he doesn't pander (well, maybe with the greening the cleaning/imus salsas...) ... he's not a media-hound ... he's delivered on his promises in the past ... he's pretty much middle of the road (politically) ... he has better guests on than everyone else in radio ... he's generated a hell of a lot of attention to great causes and was instrumental in the funding of the military medical center in san antonio and, more importantly, the substantial increase in the military death benefit for our soldiers.

not to mention the fact that he is a Marine and refers to hillary as satan.

welcome back imus.

Gosh he went on and

Gosh he went on and on....

I may remember to see what's happening on his show....I may not.

Calling Cheney a war criminal is... well...criminal in my opinion.

...at least he didn't call him pork chop butt boy like he usually does....among other things.

Nope, I haven't missed his spiel or his wife's either.

"i don't agree with

"i don't agree with everything he says, but i do like his in-your-face
opinions ... he doesn't pander (well, maybe with the greening the
cleaning/imus salsas...)"

He doesn't? So, his new black, female co-host is just a coincidence, lol?

I think it's pretty obvious that everyone is free game...except blacks, and especially black women.

Imus is back. Who cares?

Mark Levin refers to this clown's show as the "I'm-a-whus in The Morning Show"

No wonder.

Yup, I'm glad he's back.

I have one complaint.  There was a woman giggling in the background periodically (or more) during the show.  It was annoying, it sounded forced and doesn't fit his show.  Hopefully, this was a first day feature only.

BOOG*R!

This calls to mind a great moment in sitcom "history" from WKRP in Cincinatti.  From the pilot episode:

“All right, Cincinnati, it's time for this town to get down! You've got Johnny - Doctor Johnny Fever, and I am burnin' up in here - Whoah! We all in critical condition, babies, but you can tell me where it hurts, cuz I got the healing prescription here from the big KRP musical medicine cabinet. Now I am talking about your 50,000 watts intensive care unit, babies! So just sit right back now, relax! Open your ears real wide and say, 'Give it to me straight, Doctor, I can take it!' Oh, I almost forgot, fellow babies... BOOGER!!!"

(I imagine most of you will remember this, but if you need background, here it is.)

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

WKRP

I remember that episode.  It was the pilot?  I was not old enough to watch it when it first aired.  I'm sure I saw it on a rerun.  Wasn't he saying "booger" simply because he was told he couldn't?

MU got hosed by BCS!

With God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!

It was indeed the pilot.  Dr. Johnny Fever had been fired from a previous job for saying "booger" on the air.  (Kinda dates the show, doesn't it?)  So when he found out his boss, program director Andy Travis, was going to allow him some creative freedom as the new format began, the quote above was his opening speech.

I know for certain the first season of WKRP is out on DVD because I have it.  Not sure about other seasons.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

What I never understood

What I never understood about that episode was... if the turkeys were live they should have flown. They can fly you know.

Rush Limbaugh stated that of the top 5 Republicans running for the presidency, only one was a true conservative. http://www.fred08.com/ Rush then stated that the conservative was Fred Thompson.

Oh, the humanity.

My home state of Iowa is know for corn and hogs, but turkeys are raised here too.  I know what you're going to say... forget it!  ;-)  But it does make the presidential candidates redundant.  Anyway, trust me when I say, turkeys cannot fly... at least, not well enough to survive being dropped from a helicopter.  These days they're bred to have such huge breasts (for white meat) that they can barely walk.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

viking...

Ok, my mistake. I was thinking Turkey as in wild, not domesticated. I have seen wild Turkeys fly extremely well. Domesticated Turkeys, not so much ;-)

Rush Limbaugh stated that of the top 5 Republicans running for the presidency, only one was a true conservative. http://www.fred08.com/ Rush then stated that the conservative was Fred Thompson.

Oh viking... The

Oh viking...

The great memories...I yearn for the days of good television comedy...WKRP was one of my favorites.

Thank you is all I can say.

Memories of 'KRP

You're welcome.  I'm a radio announcer, and I think WKRP is the best radio-related show ever.  Most radio people I know agree.  Although it's obviously exaggerated, there's more than a little truth in the way WKRP ran.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Ah, WKRP.
