If you don't buy into a Goresque view of global warming, you're not just wrong -- you're immoral. That was ABC's implication this morning.
The notion came from Good Morning America co-anchor Bill Weir at the end of his interview of Jim Gooch. The Dem state representative from Kentucky recently had the audacity to hold hearings with witnesses who cast doubt on global warming theories.
View video here.
You knew where GMA was headed by the set-up segment that preceded the interview. It was one long alarmist scare, with everything from the typhoon in Bangladesh to the wildfires in California being blamed on global warming. A scientist was shown advocating "forceful" government action to avoid disaster.
Then it was on to Gooch. Despite his flamboyant sartorial style, the state legislator came across as level-headed and well-informed. He didn't deny that there's been global warming, and even acknowledged that man has had an effect. But he warned that some of the legislative fixes being proposed could be disastrous, pointing out that the Chamber of Commerce has stated that the Lieberman-Warner bill could destroy 3.4 million American jobs and cost our economy $6 trillion.
That did nothing to assuage Weir's fury.
BILL WEIR [voice rising]: But according to all these scientists, the more hand-wringing we do, the more we dither on this, the worse it's going to get. And what if you're wrong? What if this in fact is a global catastrophe? Isn't it a moral imperative as a public servant to err on the side of planetary survival?
That would appear to make people who don't accept Weir's moral imperative . . . immoral.
Pet Peeve Alert: In support of it's global alarmist theory, GMA aired not one but two clips, including this one, of calving glaciers. There's only one problem. Calving is a normal phenomenon which far from being evidence of global warming is the result of the growth of glaciers, not their shrinking. ARGH!

I say we don't "err" on the side of anything, especially fairy tales. When in doubt, consult history. It has been much warmer in the past, and the world didn't end, mankind wasn't destroyed, and most important of all, the polar bears weren't driven to extinction.
Now, for a little comic relief. You'll love the headline.

It's bunk.
Here's a synopsis of 40 years of disagreement on HOW to measure the Ph of the ocean. The question is not settled.
http://www.pubmedcen...
"Assessments of inorganic elemental speciation in seawater span the past
four decades. Experimentation, compilation and critical review of
equilibrium data over the past forty years have, in particular,
considerably improved our understanding of cation hydrolysis and the
complexation of cations by carbonate ions in solution. Through
experimental investigations and critical evaluation it is now known
that more than forty elements have seawater speciation schemes that are
strongly influenced by pH. In the present work, the speciation of the
elements in seawater is summarized in a manner that highlights the
significance of pH variations."
After this it gets kinda technical. Oh! And there are 4692 other citations on the topic.
...<sigh> but they have a consensus, right?

The point has been made repeatedly, but every time the MsM breathless announces it's the (hottest, coldest, wettest, dryest...) day on record since (whenever) and think it proves something, all it proves is that equivalent climate conditions existed in the past.

November 18, 2007 - 18:23 ET by danybhoyFat guy diet tips is something Cavuto has joked about before, & with good reason. As for ABC going hell bent for leather over the "morality" of global warming, lets have a look at the "carbon footprint"( as they would figure it out to be ) of the Disney empire. That includes ABC, ESPN, the Disney parks & whatever is conected to them. As well as their movie & tv productions as well.
You can throw in all of the big media companies preaching about the global warming hoax, GE/NBC/Universal, CBS/Viacom, & TimeWarner/CNN, they throw in with ABC/ESPN/Disney with this crap as well. Lots of energy used, lots of energy wasted, lots of air travel, & lots raw materials that all require energy to produce an end product. That energy comes from things like oil & coal, maybe a nuke plant if your lucky. So to those at GMA or ANY OTHER NEWS PROGRAM, do a little self examination & report on it HONESTLY. November 18, 2007 - 12:20 ET by Agrarian-DecentralistWeir's reference to a "moral imperative" was in a QUESTION to Mr. Gooch, not a statement. Given the weight of the scientific evidence, and in light of the IPCC synthesis report, released last week, it was a perfectly appropriate question to ask. But apparently in conservative never-never land, Mr. Finkelstein and Mr. Gooch are the rational analysts and Mr. Weir and the thousands of climate scientists who participated in the IPCC process are the "alarmists."

IPCC
November 18, 2007 - 12:51 ET by drillanwrI just love how this "report" is one of the cornerstones for the GWCult's arguments, when, as I understand it, the bulk of the report says just the opposite. Not to mention scientists were told what and how much to write ... and even to change what they wrote to conform with the GW agenda.
ABC's John Stossel of 20/20 recently had on several scientists who not only dispute the madcap, breakneck GW push and shove, but were on the panal that helped write the IPCC report ... and upon seeing the finished product demanded their names be removed from it.
But, GW alarmists keep pushing and citing what amounts to just a small number of pages out of the entire context of the report.
The moral imperative here
November 18, 2007 - 13:02 ET by BacchusThe moral imperative here is to seek out the truth first. I believe there's a broad consensus that doesn't trust the IPCC, and since the debate is over that's where that discussion must end.
There's no denying that man pollutes. Fight pollution. There's no denying that man is wasteful. Encourage conservation. There's plausible deniability that we're all doomed. The algore political circus can't be taken seriously. If the IPCC is serious, perhaps they should consider choosing a new, apolitical spokesperson.

A "rational" response
November 18, 2007 - 13:25 ET by acumenAnd because Weir posited his "moral imperative" indictment in the form of a question rather than a statement it is less wrong? You go on to speak of "the scientific evidence" but provide no example. You then offer the UN IPCC synthesis report as if this document came from some noble, unbiased, political free organization that is unimpeachable. In doing so you totally disregard the many recent scandals that have come to light surrounding that dubious organization. Have you so quickly forgotten the UN's Iraqi oil-for-food scam? Or the UN sex crimes in the Congo? I could add many more examples (and will readily do so if you insist) but shouldn't these two examples suffice to convince even the most "rational" mind this is not an organization to be trusted?
As Globe columnist, Jeff Jacoby states, "The UN is a corrupt institution, one that long ago squandered whatever moral legitimacy it had. The UN's founding documents venerate justice and human rights, but for the past 40 years, the organization has been dominated by a bloc of states -- essentially the Afro-Asian Third World -- most of whose governments routinely pervert justice and violate human rights."
So was Weir's "moral imperative" question really a "perfectly approapriate question to ask" based on currently questionable scientific "evidence" of man's supposed perilous impact on the environment coupled with a report from an orgnaization that is thought in most circles to have "squandered whatever moral athourity it had?"
There is no point in responding to your emotionally driven last sentence as by itself it serves to further demolish any notion that your interest in this topic is based in logic or "rational" thought.
As until very recently I have not seen you comment on NB before I am going to assume that you are unaware that this topic has been thoroughly discussed at length for well over two years on this board. Your lack of scientific proof the earth is in imminent peril due to any human contribution and use of the UN as a credible source to support that claim has been debunked on NB ad nauseam. Therefore, unless you have something new and relevant to bring to the discussion you will understand if I remain indifferent to any future comments you may have on this subject.

The shill is back again.
November 18, 2007 - 13:38 ET by NL207The shill is back again. Selling his tripe again I see.
Why don't you try reading that report. In particular, go to the appendices and annexes and learn how many IPCC "scientists" there really are. There are not "thousands". Of the roughly 2500 IPCC 4AR contributors, only about 600 are actually scientists of any kind. And of these 600 or so, a significant number are actually skeptics!
If only 600 are scientists, then what are the other 1900 contributors? Politicians, public relations, economists and political activists, that is what. The IPCC 4AR and its attendant Policymaker's Summary are little more than a political manifesto. As such, it is to be questioned, even doubted. At least one leading figure in his field. Dr. Chris Landsea, has resigned from the IPCC because he felt the report was being intentionally distorted to sell a political agenda, the AGW agenda.
Even if the IPCC 4AR is taken at face value, it does not present a picture which is in any way alarming. It's projections for the next century contradict Al Gore's egregious exaggerations in his propaganda movie. i.e., it predicts a 12-18 inch increase in sea level over the next century. Al Gore's movie presents a 20 foot increase scenario, in an obvious attemmpt to frighten people into accepting the massive government intervention he proposes and seeks to profit personally from.
As for you, you are nothing but a B team shill who comes here to smear his intellectual feces on this board and then run and hide. Stick around, coward. Debate if you dare. The floor here needs mopping.
What evidence
November 19, 2007 - 15:03 ET by PVPlease, what, pray-tell, do you describe as "scientific evidence." What is there beyond the worthless projections of primitive computer models? You warmers endlessly repeat this mantra about increasing evidence without ever providing any. Apparently, just as the IPCC continues to churn out recycled studies and refers to that as new and increasing evidence, warmers think if they just keep repeating the same things then that provides the new evidence. How did the UN get from "Likely" which means a 66% confidence level in 2001 to "Very Likely" meaning a 90% confidence level without any truly new evidence. If anything, since 2001 the real evidence has continued to unravel the scientific claims of warmers - flat surface temperatures, flat or declining sea surface temperatures, new evidence indicating solar influences correlate much better with temperatures than CO2.
Also, how come you all are so certain the debate is over when in science a 90% confidence level is regarded as lacking any statistical significance with 95% being the absolute minimum deemed as such. This is all really pathetic.

The non-doomsayers also say the warming is natural and was expected. Man hardly has anything to do with it, natural Co2 levels far outweighs anything mankind has pumped into the air and mans Co2 is hardly enough to tip the balance into disaster type levels. End of story.

Morality is how mankind implements agreed mores,
November 19, 2007 - 03:31 ET by BlindSightand pushes for changes to those mores. A good example might be how we view the violation of property rights as theft (morally wrong and a sin). People always make moral arguments to try to defend property and rights, and to try to move the consensus of what rights or obligations people have. Climate change policy is no different.
BTW, you say In support of its global alarmist theory, GMA aired not one but two clips, including this one, of calving glaciers. ... Calving is a normal phenomenon which far from being evidence of global warming is the result of the growth of glaciers, not their shrinking.
I imagine that you have noticed that even though Greenland glaciers have been accelerating, the calving fronts have been retreating. Glaciers retreat because calving is taking place at a rate faster than the glacier flow replaces the calved ice - thus, calving itself produces shrinking. If the rate of calving is slow, a glacier feeding into thr ocean will grow.
The accelerated ice flow is producing significant net mass loss in Greenland and accompanies the measurable warming there.
Pres. George Bush: Our guiding principle is clear. We must lead the world to produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions and we must do it in a way that does not undermine economic growth or prevent nations from delivering greater prosperity for their people.
Paula J. Dobriansky, Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs, November 13, 2007:
Climate change is a serious problem, and humans are contributing to it. We are at a critical moment. Addressing this global challenge requires substantial global reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. And we are committed to doing our part.
Our deliberations will be guided by two considerations: a post-2012 framework must be environmentally effective and economically sustainable.
Emissions are global and the solution, to be effective, will need to be global. We want the worlds largest emitters, including the United States, to be part of a global agreement. An approach in which only some are acting is not environmentally effective.
We can work together to develop a long-term global goal for emissions reductions. We can identify national plans that will put us on the path toward this global goal, with each country designing its own mix of binding, market-based, and voluntary measures.
