FNW: MSM Backs Bhutto; Willie Horton Redux?

Should I be worried? I just agreed with something Neal Gabler said. On yesterday's Fox News Watch, the liberal media critic opined that the MSM is backing Benazir Bhutto over Pervez Musharraf in the current Pakistan crisis -- and not for the loftiest of motives.

And could Hillary fall prey to the scenario that brought down Michael Dukakis?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

JIM PINKERTON: Major figures in the Republican party close to the Bush administration -- Jim Baker and John Bolton -- two very different wings of the Republican party, have both said, point blank, we ought to support Musharraf . . .

NEAL GABLER: The media has a horse in this race. Bhutto is their horse, because they're giving her so much coverage.

CAL THOMAS [facetiously]: She's good-looking, that's what we want.

GABLER: That's partly true.

THOMAS: It's sugar over vegetables.

Jane Hall could be heard in the background uttering a disapproving "oh-h-h-h."

BONUS COVERAGE: Willie Rides Again?

In an earlier segment, Newsday columnist Jim Pinkerton's fleeting allusion to the Willie Horton episode turned out to have a fascinating backstory. The reference arose in the course of a discussion of Hillary's evasiveness on the licenses-for-illegals issue.

PINKERTON: Chris Dodd, nailing Hillary on the driver's license issue, it's taken Hillary ten days to come up with an answer on that. I wrote that I think that the damage done to Hillary by Dodd by raising the driver's license issue, Democrats don't care, but independents and Republicans do. This reminds me a lot of the 1988 campaign, with the prison furlough issue, which ultimately mortally wounded Michael Dukakis.

Intrigued, I contacted Pinkerton to ask whether he was referring to the fact that in 1988, it had in fact been Al Gore, then a candidate for the Dem nomination, who had originally raised the prison furlough issue. But while the issue didn't gain traction during the Dem primaries, it exploded all over Dukakis in the general election.

Pinkerton responded, confirming that was exactly what he had in mind, then added this interesting historical footnote.

We Bush campaigners were entirely focused on the Republican primary race till we beat Dole in Illinois, on March 15, as I recall. After that, we did, indeed, start to wheel our guns around to the Democrats, although, of course, there were still a bunch [of Republicans still] in the race at that time.

During that time, [a campaign staffer was] reading the transcript of the NY Daily News debate. He . . . had no idea what Gore was talking about. Curious, [the staffer] called Andy Card [who told him] that the furlough issue had become a relatively big deal in Massachusetts, thanks to the Lawrence Eagle Tribune—and not at all to the Globe.

Around that time, too, an article on the furlough program appeared in Reader’s Digest. And the rest is history. [The staffer] can’t take any credit for the discovery of the issue. All [he] did was bring it in, as it were, shepherding it into the campaign, cueing it up for speeches and, of course, TV ads—- although our ad was the “revolving door,” ad, NOT the one with Willie Horton’s mug shot. That was an independent group.

Oh, one more footnote on the story. That "campaign staffer"? It was none other than . . . Jim Pinkerton himself, who had been the Bush campaign's director of [opposition] research.

What if the elections are

What if the elections are held in January as promised by Musharef and Bhutto loses to a pro-Taliban party? This is a very scary possible outcome.

Bhuto is dumb as a post

Bhuto cares nothing about Pakistan and it is reprehensible for her to calling for chaos and rallies knowing when she showed up last time bombs went off, over 100 people were murdered and it set off even bigger waves of attacks.

She thinks like Hillary Clinton that people dying and chaos is a way to gain power, but in Pakistan all it will get is pro Putin Islamocommunists in power who won't exile her, but rape her into oblivion and the cut her head off leaving her corpse to rot on a tree for "all women to learn their place".

Musharraf should have tossed her into prison and executed that Supreme Court tyrant as he started all of this chaos.

Until the United States can get Musharraf to remove the pro communists now in charge of the intel and replace them with American loyalists again this is going to go very bad.

The mess in Pakistan. We should all be concerned.

Clearly the MSM will support Bhutto precisely because the Bush administration does not. That one is a no-brainer. Let's face it, today's media would probably support Adolf Hitler if he were around today, simply due to their hatred for Mr. Bush.

Here's is what really concerns me:

Pakistan is a nuclear power. What is more, they are an Islamic nuclear power. Regardless of who winds up in power over there, how can we be absolutely certain that their arsenal, or elements of it, will not fall into the hands of those who make up the more "radical" elements of Islam?

Even if Bhutto does win, assuming the elections even take place, would she be strong enough to prevent any of these weapons from finding their way to Al-Qaida? I have my doubts.

I recall that about five or six years ago, there were some reports that some Pakistani nuclear scientists had met with members of Osama's organization.

We could have a real mess on our hands very soon.

Dave...Pakistan

I'm listening to a very interesting link over at Hugh Hewitt's.  He's interviewing several of the milbloggers from the Bloggers Convention in Vegas.

His first interview is with Bill Roggio, who makes some very interesting points about the situation in Pakistan.

Second interview was with a couple of the Blackfive bloggers.  They had a great discussion about the "old" media's obfuscation of what is currently happening in Iraq.  And about how the surge is going, as well.  Here's another great link (Blackfive, natch) by deebow about the success of the Surge.  Love his last sentence:

The throat cutters from Asscrackistan, or where ever they came from are in trouble, big trouble.

And so are the distinguished members of the Surrender Lobby....

Take a listen & a look.  It's well worth the time.

Thanks, B.

I'll check it out.

Woo-Hoo!

Keep the razorblades locked up Ma Pelosi, and Ma Reid, your children are going to be really, REALLY depressed!

Spin this, whydoncha?

Don't you just love it?

Did you listen to the Hewitt audio?  Those guys are awesome and ought to be doing commentary on Fox daily.  Oh, how I wish.  As you can probably tell from my tag, I'm a huge fan.
