Gail Collins: Rudy Was 'Busy Committing Adultery'

Over the course of his political career, Bill Clinton was literally and figuratively embraced by countless pastors, most of whom presumably went to their pulpits on Sunday to preach traditional values, including marital fidelity. If memory serves, neither Gail Collins nor other liberal pundits noted any irony in people of the cloth endorsing the spectacularly straying Clinton.

But let a preacher praise a Republican with a personal history, and Gail Collins thunders like Billy Sunday with a bad migraine. Here's the opening paragraph of her "Pat Loves Rudy" in today's New York Times [emphasis added]:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Back in mid-2001, when Mayor Rudy Giuliani was busy committing adultery, lurching into his divorce and third marriage and rooming with a gay couple he promised to marry as soon as the law allowed, who among us would have imagined that one day he would be endorsed for president by Pat Robertson?

So it's cool among liberals to talk about politicians' adultery again. And not just use the word, but, by "busy committing," conjure up mental images of the deed. OK, good to know the new groundrules.

Give Collins credit for one thing: she's candid about her cluelessness. A bit later she writes [emphasis added]:

Yesterday, Robertson said that America’s Mayor had won him over because “to me, the overriding issue before the American people is the defense of our population from the bloodlust of Islamic terrorists.” (So much for judicial activism.) “Our second goal should be the control of massive government waste and crushing federal deficits.”

Now this is the part that I have never been able to get. When did government spending become part of the divine agenda? Is there something in the Bible about smiting down federal bureaucrats?

OK, let's try to explain this: people of faith are also allowed to have secular concerns. There.

Finally, let's consider Collins's headline: "Pat Loves Rudy." A conservative columnist writing the equivalent might well be condemned for making an unsubtle appeal to homophobia. But Collins will surely get a pass in PC quarters, since it's a well-established fact that liberals are incapable of prejudice.

Bonus Coverage: Scarborough Scalds Collins: Joe Scarborough opened "Morning Joe" today by ripping Collins' column.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: This morning, the New York Times's Gail Collins writes an op-ed, and it sounds like what some right-wing nutbag would say about Bill Clinton back in the 1990s.

After expressing some initial qualms about the column, Mika Brzezinski later defended Collins' discussion of Rudy's infidelity: "there's a lot of texture to this story, and it's worth talking about."

Wonder if Mika was equally interested in the "texture" of a certain blue dress?

The Billy Sunday quip was

The Billy Sunday quip was great... though I don't know how many remember him.

When it was Bill Clinton

When it was Bill Clinton "busy committing adultery" in the Oval Office, that was a "personal matter" and was "nobody's business except his and his wife's". (And yes, it was adultery. Ask any married woman.) Now it's a major stumbling block to Giuliani.

Now this is the part that I have never been able to get. When did government spending become part of the divine agenda? Collins

I don't recall the NYT having a problem with government spending as part of the "divine agenda" when Democrats are pressing for more taxes and entitlement programs by preaching that God exhorts us to "take care of each other." But I guess that's different.

Collins is ridiculing Robertson for caring about Islamic Jihad (also a VERY big deal to Christians...you know, the Islamists wanting to bring the whole world to Islam, and all..) because she would like nothing better than for Christians to "sit out" the election or go with a third-party candidate to ensure HRC's victory.

I love this: Gail Collins telling Pat Robertson what he and all Christians should be concerned about. (Hey, Rev. Robertson, nevermind Jihad...you're supposed to be against Rudy, he's a sinner!!)

Is the Times beginning to panic at the thought that Christians might choose to back the Republican candidate?

Ya think???????

Right MB. Personal sex

Right MB. Personal sex life. That's all we heard. Everybody does it. Everybody lies. Lying was a good thing in this circumstance. He was only protecting his family.

Did Gail find any moral outrage about the rape of Juanita Brodderick? As a matter of fact, didn't most of the media place a gag order on any editorials or stories concerning the subject. Do you think the coverage would have been different if had been President Bush? I would have zero problem with Gail's report if the MSM showed one shred of consistency in their disdain of "sinful" politicians. Gail and the MSM lost all credibility LONG ago.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Apples & Oranges

Maybe I am alone here, but I don’t see much of a comparison between Rudy’s sex life and Bill Clinton's.

True, Rudy had an affair with his current wife while he was still married to his first. I’m not condoning it, and I certainly don’t support the idea.

Bubba on the other hand had numerous affairs starting in Arkansas (some of which were borderline rape at best) and all the way to chasing young interns around the White House for sexual favors while conducting Federal business at the same time (literally)!

For me, there is no comparison.

And this notion that Bill’s affairs are between him and his “wife” is preposterous. Hannity and Colmes had Dick Morris on the other night who made a great point. While in Arkansas, Hillary hired investigators to track down all of Bills lovers. It wasn’t to confront Bill, it wasn’t to confront the women, it was to proactively hush them up to protect Bill’s chances for a run at the White House. Is that how a “wife” acts in these situations? Furthermore, is this someone we want as President and in control of the FBI, CIA, DEA, IRS, NSA and the military??

Very good point Jimbo.

Very good point Jimbo.  Most people I believe are unaware that Hillary *did* attempt to track down these women and it seems those who are aware are under the belief her motive was to basically go crazy all over their face ala a frat party when one sorority sister finds out her frat man is slumming with a girl from the rival house.  Its laughable really, to think how the conversation took place.

It's quite obvious these two (Bill and Hill) couldn't care less about such concepts as love, commitment (in a marital sense at least) and are merely together because they are aware their union makes them both more powerful and like many liberals, see the marital institution as a way to make themselves more secure, wealthy and powerful as opposed to actually feeling anything close to 'romantic love' for one another or even love at all.

But as per usual, the media presents a facade, and those who are too lazy to dig eat it up because its what they are told to do.

...this article is

...this article is essentially passive aggressive behavior - the left is very bitter about Bill (especially the NOW gang:) - not only for what he did, but how they had to keep their traps shut about it (sticking to the pirate code and all) - and then on top of that, now they have the massive hypocracy stain to explain forever...

Adds up to alot of anger - an article like this is just a little venting - beating up on the wrong people of course - like the wife beater who knocks the family around after work cuz he hates his boss but won't speak to him about it:(...

Take it out on Bill lefties, quit enabling the philanderer...

I have to agree with you,

I have to agree with you, and I am starting to see some flickers of MSM jabs at Bill here and there. I hope it amplifies and continues. I also hope it is the beginning of the MSM’s divorce from HillBilly. I doubt they will have the guts to go all the way though. The Clintons are the only ones I have ever seen whose Presidential “honeymoon” period has lasted 15 years.

I thought it was very telling just how disjointed the Clinton machine is behind the curtain in comparison to the loving couple they are portrayed as. This is evidenced by Bill’s “swift boating of Hillary” comments the other day, only to have Hillary’s own camp make a statement that they didn’t condone the analogy.

That was embarrassing to be sure. If it happened to Rudy or Romney, it would be on the front page of the NY times. Instead? Barely a whisper.

I think it was Gail who said

I think it was Gail who said she wanted to be in line, right behind Monica.

Careful

Careful Gail, don't let gay people know how you truly view them.

I'm not sure what your point

I'm not sure what your point is in that statement Alex, and I know it was probably meant in jest, but be careful if you are throwing out that homosexuals are all a permiscuous, infidelic lot, then I think its quite tragic you have such a limited view of the large spectrum of people that identify as homosexual and I hope you find in your life that not only are they not all that way, but that you also learn such blanket statements, judging *any* culture by its stereotype, is just plain ignorant. (not calling *you* ignorant, just the judging of people via stereotypes)

Binxly

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, my point was to expose yet another example of liberal hipocracy.

Liberals are always quick to "use" groups of people they claim to represent or protect if they can trash a conservative in the process.

My point is - so what if Rudy lived with two gay people Gail?

How is that even relevant?

She obviously thinks she can score negaitive points by pointing that out. She is pathetic.

I don't think this is "new groundrules"

Maybe I'm mistaken, but the national conversation has included BJ's & adultery since Bill Clinton. It's simply a fact that Rudy's occasionally not-able to keep it in his pants. If I were Judy -- who has experience! -- I'd no more trust Rudy alone in the Oval Office with a young intern than Hillary shoulda trusted Slick with Monica.

Both men DO have "busy" histories of sexual dalliance despite marriage vows. Men with such histories, like it or not, sometimes tend to stray again, and the nation had enough of that with Slick Willie to take another risk. It's a character-thing, and journalists on both sides of the aisle SHOULD therefore bring it up when candidates or their supporters loudly claim to espouse "family values."

sarc, I think you have a

sarc, I think you have a point. And if Collins were going at it from that point of view (do we really want to go through all that again?) I wouldn't have a problem with it. I guess it's the hypocrisy of it. Normally evangelicals get ridiculed for being "one note" voters (morality). Now when Robertson sees Islamist extremists as a greater threat than Rudy's personal life, Collins is suddenly offended on behalf of supposedly betrayed Christian principles.

PS: Hugh Hewitt doesn't think the Robertson Effect is even going to matter much.

Well, that's Rev. Robertson's line on it...

I am with Chuck Baldwin, instead, so I'm suspicious it's more money/big-government-worship, but everyone can interpret these things as they like. We all get to have our own favorite preachers. I think my new fave is Dr. Paul's brother, David. They're quite a family. For me a fifty-year marriage with great kids also says a lot.

I don't trust this push-poll driven idea that Rudy can somehow defeat Hillary, either. I don't see how. Indeed, despite his front-runner status currently, I sincerely believe Rudy has the least chance against her of all remaining Republican Presidential candidates, even leaving aside the obvious chance of another sexual dalliance. Why? Let's see, the "choice" for pro-life Republicans or pro-gun-rights Republicans or just small-government Republicans like me would be what between those 2 statists?? I can't see a reason why either one deserves my vote, so it's my sincere hope that's not the "choice" as much as the news-media seemingly wants it to be.

Well, assuming that Rudy

Well, assuming that Rudy does make it to the general election, and I truly have no idea at this point, he can beat Hillary despite all the reasons you mention. Removing the very small (smaller this election than ever, if Hillary gets nominated) percentage of likely voters who will abstain because he diverges from them on this issue or that, in the end, most people will make a choice between the two. And bottom line, although Rudy ain't my ideal candidate, he's a lot closer to it than Hillary. What voter, right of center would in their right mind, choose Hillary over Rudy??? A socialist over a socially liberal law and order guy, who sees Islamofacism as dangerous, like most of us on the right?

"What voter, right of center would in their right mind, choose Hillary over Rudy???"

For one, the millions of people in the country blinded by Bush Derangement Syndrome" who beleive Bush stole both elections and that a Democrat is "owed" the White House.

For two, there are an awful lot of people (dare I say minorities?) who the Democrats pander to relentlessly and convince them that Republicans are evil.

In the end, I agree with you. Rudy can beat Hillary, and more easily than most people think.

Gail Loves Hillary

Gail Collins, an eager Hillary booster, does have a point here: it is incredibly odd for Pat Robertson, supposedly a leader of the religious right, to endorse a pro-abortion, pro-gay adulterer to lead the Republican Party, a man who isn't even supported by his children. Who would have imagined that?

I don't think Gail Collins has the best interests of social conservatives at heart, but it's hard to believe that Pat Robertson would endorse shredding the GOP platform on social issues.

I'd been suspecting it was money, so far...

But maybe it's that other aphrodisiac, power.

Recall, Pat once ran for the Presidency. He & Rudy may well think their strange-bedfellow divergent styles/constituencies/geography would somehow "fit." I still don't think Rudy can beat Hillary, with or without any particular VP candidate (or my vote, for that matter!).

Presuming he has truly

Presuming he has truly repented, his past is forgiven, isn't it?

Ignorance is bliss. It's easier to repeat a mindless slogan than to do some actual research.

By God? Sure.

But I look to previous patterns of behavior (gun grabbin', taxin', spendin', screwin'-outside-marriage) as indications of future patterns of behavior. Sure was true for Slick. I'm just sayin' Rudy has the same sort of problems keeping it in his pants, regardless of whether conservatives want to talk about it any more than Democrats wanted to talk about Slick having the same issues. I'm guaranteed to vote against Rudy just like I'm guaranteed to vote against Hillary, and for the exact same reason. They're both authoritarian control freaks who can't be trusted.

Gail Collins

No offense, Gail, but, in the words of David Spade on SNL
" there's somebody called a dentist and procedures for bleaching or whitening your teeth. Look into it."
(or use a different PR photo!)

Something tells me this

Something tells me this broad doesn't push for massive tobacco taxes and draconian measures against smoking.

Just a hunch.

Gail's teeth

Was thinking the same thing joe3, Gail needs to lay off the chewing tobacco.

My 2 cents

This is one of the very few times I agree with the libs, that we got way off track with Whitewater and reduced ourselves to pettiness.

I wish that we nailed him, Rodham, and their Hot Springs goons cleanly on the original charges.

I wish we nailed Rodham once and for all for her Rose law firm tomfoolery, and her crooked insider trading (which another powerful woman, Martha Stewert, actually served jail time). Then we wouldn't be threatened right now with this broad, much less a Clinton "dynasty".

But we had to get hysterical over BJ's bjs (excuse the crassness). And that got us nowhere.

That being said, can the libs decide to take the High Road, be consistent, and only hit Rudy on issues of substance? Guess not.

The *real* missed-opportunity scandal IMO

Was the Loral/Lippo/Chinese-money scandal, which was totally-ignored in favor of sex, despite my rants at the time about the relative-importance of the 2 scandals and the media-bias involved in all this...

My *suspicions* (and no, I have no proof) are that Slick had some secret-China-dirt on a few powerful Republicans to counter his own appearance of corruption. That suspicion remains today, to be perfectly frank about it...
JMR

Good Point

Yeah, there is certainly a lot of secret Chinese money pumped into our political system. And no one talks about it.

What was up with Al Gore shilling at Buddhist temples? The tinfoil hat in me thinks that all this AGW bunk (that Gore is pushing) is really a Chinese plot to disrupt our engine of capitalism. Is it just a coincidence that Gore is only advocating the shutdown of western industries, and not the Chinese?

Exactly.

Given his record, I would not be surprised if Gore has diversified holdings, including dirty industries in China. And the idea that China would purchase politicians from only one major party is, IMO, laughable. They'll purchase whoever's for sale. I think they're (sadly) also excellent spies with an exceptionally long-term view of the world compared to ours.

It's my hope that China's own capitalist self-interest will save both us & them & their environment, while reducing dependence on oil-dictators. I'm always pushing pebble-bed nuclear reactors here, and I suspect folks get bored with it. I'd love to own part of a nuclear reactor someday and make my own electricity.

Starr had to get clearance

Starr had to get clearance from the Attorney General to proceed with all investigations. Starr wanted to pursue the Commie Campaign Cash issue but Reno wouldn't let him, claiming there was an "internal investigation" going on (right).

She did clear the Lewinski angle. It is my opinion that Clinton gave the OK on this to take the heat off of interest in the Commie Cash scandal. Clinton just knew there wasn't any physical proof, so it would boil down to a "he said, she said" situation, and he had weathered those in the past. That was of course, before the Blue Dress.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

It wasn't about bj's with Clinton

It's inaccurate to paint Clinton's actions during Monicagate with the broad brush of "bj's."  Bill Clinton suborned perjury, committed perjury, and abused his Presidential authority by attempting to influence a civil trial and thus deny a private citizen due process.  He lied to the American people while wagging his finger.  He lied to a judge.  He lost his law license.  He was impeached by the Congress of the United States.

It's a testament to his ego and his lack of respect for the office of President that he didn't resign.  Today he marches around the world trying to make everyone forget what a despicable human being he was and is.

Don't ever forget what Clinton ACTUALLY DID.

Forget 911, I dial 9MM.

Thank you fossten. You

Thank you fossten. You beat me to the punch! ;-)

I don't buy it

These "private citizens seeking due process" are, frankly, a bunch of floozies that got into BJ's pants, and decided to maximize the opportunity by scamming the schmuck after the fact. The schmuck digs in, so then the floozies go public. I don't think this is something for us to hang our hat on.

And I refuse to believe BJ "raped" anyone. That is completely over the top.

The Clinton Crime Family (Levine's snark) has plenty of dirt that we can hit them cleanly on. The "tee-hees" and the "titter-titters" are a complete waste of time.

Funny, I didn't mention the

Funny, I didn't mention the rape, you did...

You not so expertly dodged the issue of Clinton's PROVEN illegalities and once again tried to smooth it over by making it about sex.  You evidently don't buy the facts, but you are certainly buying the 1990s media spin.

As PT Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute."

Forget 911, I dial 9MM.

Why do you refuse to believe it?

Okay, maybe I jumped the gun by hauling out that "Clinton Rapist" chain saw, but I figured someone here was going to mention it anyway..

Anyway, Jimbo, I think it is apples and oranges as far as an egotistical sexaholic (who lacks the self-control to cull a half-way classy mistress, much less a goddess like Marilyn Monroe), and a rapist. You have to be a really sick, evil bastard to be a rapist, and as much as I dislike Clinton, I can't see him being one.

Again, I'm more inclined to believe that among the hordes of bimbos that BJ went through, a handful would ienvitably turn into blackmailers.

Leftists time and time again refuse to take the high road. Why can't the conservatives?

BJ The Rapist

Do you really have difficulty seeing sexaholic, pathological liar, believer that he is above the law BJ Clinton seducing yet another woman with his political power, and when it really came down to it, she said "no”, and he said “yes”?

"Sure she said no.  But it all depends on your definition of "no"".

You are entitled to your opinion naturally, but for me, I have no problem seeing it.

At all.

Mark, you forget that

Mark, you forget that besides the small faux pas of being a serial adulterer/rapist, Bill Clinton atoned for his sins by being all in favor or late term and partial birth abortions. In the liberl lexicon, that position alone allowed for any minor peccadillos on Bill's part. That is why in the case of a Democrat activities such as perjury, witness tampering, destruction of evidence, and abuse of power, activities which if done by a Republican would be copious grounds to run him out of office, do not rise to the level of impeachment.

To cement his place among the ranks of the saints of the Democrat Party, Bill was also busy gutting the military, emasculating the intelligence organs of this country and making sure they couldn't communitcate their findings with each other, fomenting class warfare, rewarding the societal parasites and punishing the producers, and otherwise implementing the aims and policies of Communist theory.

Rudy, on the other hand managed to commit many sins against the Church of Marxism that is the Democrat Party. Among these sins are that he managed to reduce crime in New York City by showing intolerance to the activities of the "homeless", and he managed to bring some semblance of control to the spending habits of the New York City government. His biggest sin is that he is a Republican. That in itself outweighs his positions as anti-gun, pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage; three positions for which the Dems would be enamored of him if only he were in their party.

I never knew Collins cared

I never knew Collins cared so much about adultery. Seeing as how she wants marriage dissolved with gay marriage, robot marriage, free divorce, etc. Pretty sure liberals are the MOST "Don't care" about adultery, seeing as how they commit it almost everyday.

Nothing left to add

Great read Mark.  This was my favorite; "....Gail Collins thunders like Billy Sunday with a bad migraine."

Collins is a living example of the Peter Principle at Work

She is so spectacularly out of her league and over her depth that the NYT had to gently dislodge her from her post overseeing the Op-Ed page. She and I share the same alma mater [Marquette], so I wanted to cut her a little slack when she got the job. But she made such a hash of it that I turned on her as did almost every sane reader of the few pieces allowed to be viewed free-of-charge back in her day.

Anything Bill does in the adultery department appears to be okay by Gail, doesn't it? Just your everyday double-standard liberal hypocrisy---not even noteworthy because it happens on a daily basis in the NYT.

Maureen now is starting to turn on Hillary, as the deep-throat crowd appear to be past their cut-off [or is it penetration?] point with Hillarious and her wandering philandering Bubba-hubby.
