Fame Game: Plame Protests Too Much

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

With a little help from Joe Scarborough, Valerie Plame Wilson tried this morning to paint herself as someone who, far from seeking "Vanity Fair" fame, had celebrity thrust upon her in a moment of distraction. Right.

And try this quick quiz:

Q. Is it possible to get through an extended interview of Valerie Plame Wilson without mentioning Richard Armitage?

A. Yes, if Joe Scarborough is the interviewer.

During the 7:30 A.M. EDT half-hour today, the "Morning Joe" host conducted a 15-minute conversation with and about Plame, much of which focused on her "outing" as a CIA operative. But the name of the State Department official who first disclosed her identity was never uttered. That wouldn't have fit the template that her name was leaked as the result of a nasty White House plot to punish Plame's husband Joe Wilson. Armitage, at State, was anything but a partisan GOP operative with an anti-Wilson axe to grind.

Give guest panelist and MSNBC military analyst Jack Jacobs credit for being willing to rock the boat -- at least during the panel's chitchat that immediately preceded Plame's introduction:

JACK JACOBS: There's an argument that says inside the beltway, everybody knew that she was employed by the CIA. And so the disclosure that she was employed by the CIA was common knowledge and is no big deal. And it raises the significant issue about what that was all about.

When she came on, Plame addressed Jacobs's point with a classic non-denial denial.

VALERIE PLAME WILSON: You had mentioned earlier about this notion, again, by supporters of this administration that everyone knew who I was and this is really no big secret. I was covert up to the day Mr. Novak printed his column, but you really don't need to take just my word for it. There was -- Director of the CIA General Michael Hayden said I was covert, the judge in Mr. Libby's trial [said] I was covert, and Mr. Fitzgerald in his filings in Libby's trial said that I noted I had travelled extensively overseas under a variety of covers, a variety of aliases, doing covert operations work right up until the point when my name was betrayed by these senior administration officials.

That for official purposes Plame continued to be classified as "covert" is far from a denial her CIA work was common knowledge on the DC cocktail circuit.

Note that while Jacobs had the gumption to raise the issue before Plame appeared, when she came on he didn't challenge her assertion and to the contrary lobbed this softball regarding the disseminaton of her identity: "how does Robert Novak get a pass on all this?"

Turning to how Plame gloried in the celebrity status flowing from the "Vanity Fair" shoot, Scarborough set the stage in a Plame-friendly manner, suggesting she was so distracted by other obligations as to be virtually oblivious as to what "Vanity Fair" was up to.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Let's talk about another thing that is brought up, that you explain in the book also. That is the famous, or the infamous, "Vanity Fair" spread, which of course when I first saw it I said "my God, what's she doing?" and you talked about how you were just rushed into the home, you had two kids -- and that's the thing that is so remarkable about this, is, you were raising two twins at the time, a very chaotic time for you personally, as well as professionally. So talk about this "Vanity Fair" photo spread came up.

Right. Raising two kids. Well, that completely explains why Plame was so distracted she would want to exploit her sudden fame with a "Vanity Fair" shoot. End of story!

VALERIE PLAME WILSON: They were taking, it was a piece on Joe, and as I write about it in the book, uh, they came in, uh, asked me to do it, and, uh, I -- just too much was going on at that time. Um, you have to remember this was months after the damage had been done, after the senior White House officials had already talked to many journalists, given them my name, my cover was blown, I wasn't interviewed in the article. But honestly, the whole thing has been more trouble than it's worth. But I do think it is a testament to the supporters of the administration that this continues to come back up as actually a serious question. This really should all be about how those erroneous 16 words got into the president's State of the Union address.

Plame's admission that the "Vanity Fair" shoot didn't occur till months after the story broke undermines her claim that she just got carried away in the rush of breaking events. And please spare us the "more trouble than it's worth." How much was the ensuing celebrity worth in Plame's seven-figure book deal?

A bit later, Plame returned to the theme that she has been dismayed by the sudden bout of fame.

PLAME: I had no need for the external recognition, I derived all the satisfaction I needed from a career I loved. I was working on the issues, I was called to serve my country, I loved my career. And I literally went overnight from being a very private person, which was fine by me, to being this public persona.

The lady Plame doth protest too much.

Note: Patterico is underwhelmed by the coverage of the Plame book and Chris Matthews' interview of her.

Anna Nicole Plame

Famous for being famous.

WORDS CAN'T

describe the ineptness of this babe. So the two kids was much more stressful than being a super duper spy chick? Even if you roll this up with what was going on with Joe at the time, this was too much on her? How in the hell did she pull off "covert" operations of any kind on any level? Based on this I'd have to say I'm glad she's not out on the gound anymore, this may above all things, saved some lives.....

"You're either part of the solution or part of the problem"

She needs to sitdown with

She needs to sitdown with O'Rielly or Brit Hume or even Hannity and Colmes- hey, there's a liberal in that panel and let her dance around with bogus answers. I know I'm asking too much, but leftoids like her are taken cared of by the left and will not appear on FOX, where they will be grilled.

Forget O'Reilly. I would

Forget O'Reilly. I would want either Hume or Hannity to interview her and him, either together or separately. These are the two most obvious opportunistic phoney political weasels in DC.

Half right Gat

For interviewing skills I like Chris Wallace and Brit Hume.

Hannity's great, but he's at least as much into sharing his views as he is with hearing others'.

  • I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous

I'm with you, CA. Wallace

I'm with you, CA. Wallace is tops in my book and Brit's also very good.

Of course none of this will

Of course none of this will happen because these two are shady con-artists trying to sell books right now and eventually movie tickets. I don't think they have any other motivation.

Go Away like you said you would

Why is it they almost every time I see this woman she is telling us how she just "want's to move on" and "head to new mexico" with Joey and yet shee keeps winding up in every TV studio in the country.

Valerie and Joe tell the truth or PLEASE go away !

Go Figure

What a mystery. A former Ambassador with few links to the Administration writes a scathing op-ed piece about a trip he made on behest of the Administration To listen to the left, no one was supposed to wonder how he came to be sent on this bold mission. It just was not germaine that his wife was an analyst in the weapons of mass destruction section at the CIA. Nor was it germaine that Wilson revealed a classified trip in a newspaper without authorization.

When I was in the Navy,

When I was in the Navy, there were some countries we would travel to where we were not allowed to wear uniforms, we had to say we were working for some company or another, etc., but we were never considered "covert agents".

Also, how can you be considered "covert" when you're driving to and from CIA Headquarters in Langley everyday, and when you have a CIA HQ base decal on your car?

Same here.

When I was in the Navy we flew around Europe and the Med. throughout the 1970's and never wore a uniform off base save a flight suit if it was in a military transport to our quarters.

Plame and her husband are a walking talking disgrace to all they served with and their country.

Follow Up ?s

No one ever asked about when her last trip was, does her status show her as covert at the time of the supposed "outing"?  Did not Fitzgerald state she was not covert by definition?  Did not any of the CIA consider her "covert" other than herself?  What does the employment records show her status as in 2000?  2001?  2002? 2003?

She was so covert, none of

She was so covert, none of her co-workers knew she was covert. In fact, no one at the CIA knew her name or what she looked like. Even Joe had to wear a blindfold whenever they were together, or when Joe would look in a photo album. Of course, the photo album stuff was just over-kill, since all of super-secret-agent's face shots had been blacked out. Heck, even the super-secret-agent herself was required to wear a blindfold whenever she looked in a mirror.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Just get over yourself Val!

A COUPLE THINGS...

Val & Joe are total attention whores, for people who claim they really don't enjoy the spotlight, they seem to enjoy the spotlight.

There are a couple of issues I have with these two meatheads. 1st off, Joe Wilson is was basically a low rent gov't staffer at an embassy or two. We then see numerous accounts that he lies almost all the time.

2nd, Plame & her worthless husband were trying to sink the policy of President Bush, while trying to hide behind some sort of "classified status". This is the sort of thing cowards try, pull back the curtain & it does'nt work so well. If she was pissed about being "outed", she should be upset with her deadbeat hubby writing editorials for major papers.

I'm with John Gibson on this issue, whoever exposed these 2 morons should have been given a medal. I also think she get a pass in the MSM because they are in the tank against our war effort & last but not least, she's cute. Nobody wants to hassle a cute woman, give her a tough time questioning her actions & making her cry. Somebody should start the tough questions sooner rather then later. Somebody should also go after that liar she married to.

"Some of us are wise, some of us are otherwise"  Mark Levin

"Somebody should start the tough questions . . . ."?

How about the DOJ for one, and the CIA for two.  Where were these overstaffed bureaucratic ratholes during all of this nonsense?  Please don't tell me the independent prosecutor; that was nothhing more than a disgraceful exercise in ass covering.  Not to mention, neither of these two publicity hounds were grilled for their actions.  How is it these bureaucracies can be the sources to innumerable leaks against the administration, and no one, and I mean no one, demands there be an open investigation exposing the sources.  How is it they can hide behind the curtain of 'national security' when there's no limit to anything, anyone can blab to the press about?  Please, please Val, take your dumbass husband and your kids, and find a comfy hole in NM and stay there.

I have been watching dear

I have been watching dear Val on her net tour of FireDogLake and her posting gig over at HuffPo.

The last time I saw that much sucking up was when my Uncle put the milking machine one of his prize Holstein cows.
