I don't normally follow Ted Rall's work. But when J.M., a member of our military serving in Iraq, wrote NB about Rall's recent column and cartoon, I had a look. I'd say our soldier was being restrained in describing Rall's work as "particularly offensive."
I'm displaying one panel from his cartoon of October 22nd. You can view the whole of it here. As you'll note, the point is to celebrate the death of our soldiers, since they are "idiots" whose removal from the gene pool causes the average IQ back home to soar.
His column of October 23rd, "HEY, SOLDIERS: QUIT WHINING!", which you can read here, contains these nuggets:
- [H]ey, soldier, you volunteered. If not for you, there wouldn't be a war in the first place.
- Even after soldiers get killed, their parents promote the war so their dead kids won't be lonely in heaven.
And then, this [emphasis added]:
Few Gold Star mothers tell [Pres. Bush] off. Those who do are polite to the man who murdered their children as surely and as viciously as if he'd shot them himself. Why don't they spit at him?
There really are no words, but let me try: Ted Rall is a despicable, unpatriotic, ghoul.
Rall's column is syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate. According to Rall's website [emphasis added]:
His cartoons now appear in more than 140 publications, including the Philadelphia Daily News, Aspen Times, Hartford Advocate, Newark Star-Ledger, Los Angeles Times, Wilmington News-Journal, San Diego Reader, Village Voice, Harrisburg (PA) Patriot-News, Las Vegas Review Journal, Washington City Paper, Tucson Weekly, Sacramento News & Review, San Jose Mercury-News, Lexington Herald-Leader and New York Times.
Note: Rall's repulsiveness is of course nothing new. Have a look, for example, at Michelle Malkin's take on a cartoon in which Rall used an N-word about Condi Rice.

I agree with Ted Rall
January 12, 2008 - 03:57 ET by blogonatorThe soldiers in Iraq today are not protecting our freedom, and I do not respect them.
I understand the need for securing the gulf regions as a means of protecting our future access to oil, but to pretend that the war in Iraq is about the protection of "freedom", is absurd.
Believe it or not, terrorists are not going to invade the US mainland and create a dictatorial government. In fact, the only reason the rest of the world hates America, is that America doen't know how to mind its own damn business.
Terrorists wouldn't be blowing shit up if they didn't hate us. Why do they hate us? Probably because we killed half their relatives in "unavoidable civilian casualties".
Go look at the Iraq combat footage on YouTube. These US soldiers are not professionals. They're just uneducated high school graduates who have decided to take a break from working at McDonalds. Their behaviour is unprofessional, they cheer (with profanities) during combat, they shoot wounded and incapacitated enemies, they murder civilians.
Oh, and by the way, I know its spelt "Iraq", but it's pronounced "e-raq", not "i-raq". If you're gonna invade them, atleast go through the trouble of learning to say their name properly.

That being said, I find it quite odd that these same publications wouldn't even consider printing a cartoon Mahammed, much less anything remotely offensive to Islamic extremism.

How many newspapers dropped Ann Coulter's column because she said something offensive? How long did it take for the broadcaster to dump Imus?
More importantly, I think, even though it's not a media situation, is: will Ted Rall be condemned on the floor of the Senate, as Rush Limbaugh was (for something he didn't even say, btw.)?

October 25, 2007 - 07:40 ET by drillanwrSeveral years ago, when my two older daughters were still in grade school, after I had gotten them on the bus and off to school I hopped in the car and ran up to our local Walmart, who was open 24 hours for the Christmas shopping season. I parked a moderate distance from the store and trekked the snowy parking lot to the store curb/sidewalk ... walking past the area where in the warm months lawn and garden supplies were displayed, on my way past the selection of pop/soda machines and around the corner of the building in the direction of the front doors. Snow shovels and big bags of rock salt pressed me closer to the curb. As I passed a car that was parked (in the wrong direction ... driver side to the curb) beside the curb I happened to glance down and through the driver's window I could see the somewhat young, but obviously adult, male with his sweat pants around his hips and his ying-yang well in-hand . He looked up through the window with a s**t grin as I passed, and I spit on his window. *

Rush Limbaugh is vilified, censored, and publicly denounced for something he didn't say.
Ann Coulter is censored by the wife of a Presidential candidate for making a valid analogy to Bill Maher's tactics.
David Horowitz is effectively smothered off the stage by screaming students while giving a speech during Islamic Awareness week.
Hillary Clinton gets away with multiple campaign finance FELONIES.
B. Hussein Obama gets away with not saluting the flag during the National Anthem.
Pete Stark makes incendiary comments about our soldiers on the floor of the House and gets away with it.

October 25, 2007 - 09:04 ET by acaiguanaThe point would not be so much that Rall has the right to be a frothing at the mouth Liberal with little perspective and less brain.
The point would really be lending credibility to Rall and his ilk by allowing them the forum of a major newspaper.
Of course, Rall can publish where he may. The operative word being 'may'.
As long as the MSM provides a forum for this type of viewpoint; the longer they wallow in their myopic world where truly, soldiers are stupid and Liberals are smart.

As for Condoleeza Rice, that would be assault; not terrorism. I doubt the Ms. Rice is "terrorized" by them; her security is perfectly capable of handling them.

October 25, 2007 - 11:35 ET by Wildcatter1980Dear Senator Reid,
I thought you would be interested in this.
Ted Rall included these comments in a web post entitled HEY, SOLDIERS: QUIT WHINING!:
* [H]ey, soldier, you volunteered. If not for you, there wouldn't be a war in the first place.
* Even after soldiers get killed, their parents promote the war so their dead kids won't be lonely in heaven.
(Web address: http://www.uexpress.com/tedrall/)
These comments came shortly after Mr. Rall posted a cartoon where he has characters refer to our soldiers as idiots and that our soldiers who have given the highest price has raised the countries IQ.
(Web address: http://www.gocomics.com/rallcom/2007/10/22/)

October 25, 2007 - 11:39 ET by CrossWiseRangerI am currently serving with Special Forces in Baghdad. The men and women of the U.S. military are among the best the nation has. Rarely have I heard complaints even though some have been gone from home for over a year and many have done multiple tours. We know what this war is about and are proud to serve.
Mr. Rall obviously wanted to be in the military but was rejected for some reason: mental deficiency, sociopathic behavior, or maybe undescended testicles. Proof of such is visible in his cartoons.
He should be pitied. "Cowards die a thousand deaths, the valiant tastes of death but once." Each day Mr. Rall looks in the mirror and is bedeviled by the fact that he doesn't measure up to even the newest military recruit.
To paraphrase from my favorite book "the laces of an American soldier's boots Mr. Rall is not worthy to stoop down and untie."
