Iran Resolution: Matthews Accuses Hillary of 'Wide Stance'

Discussing her attempt to straddle the Iran issue, Chris Matthews has accused Hillary Clinton of a "wide stance." For some time, the "Hardball" host has been making the point that while Hillary now claims she voted for the 2002 Iraq resolution only for purposes of authorizing more diplomacy, at the time everyone and his uncle knew that it was a war authorization.

For example, interviewing Hillary advisor Howard Wolfson on "Hardball" back in July, Matthews stated: "Anybody who didn't think we were going to war in the months leading up to the war in Iraq wasn't paying attention."

Today, Matthews employed the infelicitous metaphor for purposes of accusing Hillary of pulling a similar stunt on Iran.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Last week President Bush said a nuclear Iran would mean World War III. This week the Vice-President, Dick Cheney, is threatening Iran with serious consequences. So what does that mean for Hillary Clinton, who voted to label the Iran revolutionary guard a terrorist organization?

Well, word that the Iowa Democrats will punish her if the U.S. does attack Iran, Hillary has just sent a three-page letter to Iowa voters trying to distance herself from a possible lead-up to war with Iran. In the letter she defends what she calls a vote for stepped-up diplomacy, not military action. That's right: same thing she said about her vote the resolution authorizing the war with Iraq. Hillary wants hawks in the party to think she's the most hawkish of Democrats, and still make the cut with the doves. Talk about a wide stance.

Ugh. And can you imagine the MSM howls of protest, the allegations of invidious attack, homophobia and who-knows-what-else if a conservative pundit had selected the same simile?

Aside: I'm not in the habit of choosing unflattering screencaps, but did so here because it shows the very moment that Matthews mentioned the wide stance. Looks like Chris managed to gross himself out.

My take: I take issue with Chris's claim that Hillary adopted the straddle because she "wants hawks in the party to think she's the most hawkish of Democrats." At least when it comes to primary voters, there really ain't no hawkish Dems. Hillary's gambit is aimed at maintaining her foreign policy credentials for the general election, not the primaries.

OMG... I just got done

OMG...

I just got done watching this on the television and hadn't quite got done chucklin' or chuckin' either way....glad you caught this too...for me it says a lot about Hillary.

Talk About a Wide Stance

That is hillarious...as is your use, Mark, of the phrase infelicitous metaphor

A charming little bit of whimsy....which clearly shows Chris Matthews for the dolt he truly is.

Did he truly mean to infer that Hillary is gay?  Or was he just running his mouth as usual?  What will Hillary do to him for this most infelicitous metaphor?

Thanks for the great laugh!

I'm certain, sortly after

I'm certain, sortly after Chrissy opened his mouth and inserted his arse in it the MSLSD red phone rang ... and he will be, at the very least, rewording, if not apologizing, for the remark ...

drill

I'm sure her Highness is not amused.

When will she next appear on Hardball? Any bets?

<edit>  Okay...and I'm a little slow today.

MS...LSD?  This whole joke gets funnier and funnnier.

Okay, ewww! I mean, we all

Okay, ewww!

I mean, we all suspected ... But really ... What does Chrissy know that we don't?

Implausible deniability.

Implausible deniability.

OK, I'm going "clean" here...no double-entendre

HRC's "stance" on Iraq has been one of an octupus playing "Twister." She has literally been "all over the place" on it.

Supporting the war,

Saying Bush should get us out before he leaves office,

Saying the Congress and Senate should get us out,

Saying she will start pulling us out in January 2009 if they don't

Saying we will need troops there until at least 2013,

Saying she never authorized the war, only voted to let Bush go back to the UN...

Did I leave anything out?

This is not even a flip-flop; that just goes back and forth between two positions. This is a pin-ball machine going every which way, depending on which interest group she bounces into and off of.

And yet the MSM dutifully covers for her every time, as if her previous positions never existed. OK, Matthews did hit on it, but why isn't everyone badgering her about this? So she doesn't need to worry about it now, she knows they will cover for her, no matter what she says.

Octopus on a Twister Board?

mb,

You've coined yet another "delicious" phrase...

I nominate you to the Noel Sheppard Hall of Fame.

Thank you very much, Blonde!

Thank you very much, Blonde! It's because I have a sick mind. I was going to use another metaphor (book-wise) for the "positions" thing, but thought better of it. LOL

I echo Blonde's kudo for the octo-Twister tag.

Also, I love the pinball reference.

Wow! A double play!

Hey Drill

I was so inspired by mb's "Hillary Twisted Sista" thing that I posted a forum topic on it...LOL!

I feel the need ... The need for another page of:

HRC's Diary <insert light blingy fairy music>

Dear Diary,

Yes, I know ... I've been so bad.  I've neglected you terribly.  But I have been so busy with the 300 debates and on the campaign trail ... Don't say anything, Dear Diary, but if I have to choke down one more Spring Roll and bowl of pork fried rice I'll blow chunks!  What I don't do for a few paltry bucks in the coffers ... What's worse, the money is so stained with soy sauce we have to send it out to the Chinese Laundry.

Anyway, I stopped by the NBC studios the other day for a quick tinkle ... and who should I bump into? Yes! My good friend Chris Matthews ... Diary, I mean I literally bumped into him ... My foot accidentally kicked against his under the stall, and I had a heck of a time reaching under for a few squares, as my TP dispenser was empty.  Well, a friendly little game of footsie ensued, with Chris ... LMAO! ... With Chris grumbling, "Knock it off, Keith!" ... ROFLMAO!!!  So, I did my best KO voice and said, "Hey, how about a courtesy flush, big fella, or do you want me to come over there and do a Countdown on you?"

Oh! Diary, I don't think Chris ever figured out it was me!  What a hoot.

Just a couple things about the campaign.  Edwards has to constantly call Liz and get her "OK" on every little thing. He's soooo hen-picked.

I hear Obama is planning on taking his "I might be an American, but you can't tell by looking at me" strategy to the next step ... I caught him in the hotel hallway the other night trying to teach his wife how to walk in one of those head to toe burkas.  At least, I think it was his wife.

Kucinich has been a continual pain in the Bronx-side.  I can't tell you how many times I've tripped over the little troll.  And he actually thinks his Hey, I'm the bastard son of Howdy Doody and Alfred E. Neuman jokes are funny. Ugh! When I see him coming I turn and walk the other way.

Oh, dear ... Look at the time.  We're having another Twister game down in Biden's room.  I gotta get down there before Richardson does or I'll have to take him as my running --- er, teammate ... Gotta go kick my Hsus off!

Later, Diary!

Lovingly,

Diagnosis

Now, I'm not a psychiatrist, never played one on TV, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but it has become increasingly clear that Chris Matthews is a certifiable A#1 NUTJOB!!!

CLINTON 'O8. AVOID WIDE LOAD

Check out my latest YouTube...but only if you support the troops and their mission: Better Men Than Me/The Battle For Fallujah

Most pictures of Hilary

Most pictures of Hilary show her from the waist up.  Rarely do we see images of the 'wide load' she sports in the gluteal and thigh areas.  She has the quintessential pear shaped body.  Genetics were not kind to her.

Is it a physiological/engineering truism that you need a wide stance to support a wide load?

Criticizing or Coaching?

Is that why he's wincing?

That pic looks like he expects to have his ears boxed....

I'm sure this is coaching rather than criticism...
