Given his show's modest ratings, it's unlikely that Keith Olbermann would be in a position to make a multi-million dollar donation to charity anytime soon. But let's imagine he did. Do you think that, in a segment on a related subject, NBC might find a moment to mention Olbermann's generosity?
So do I.
But "Today" managed to get through its report this morning about Rush Limbaugh's auctioning off of the Harry Reid letter . . . without mentioning that Rush has publicly pledged to match the $2.1 million winning bid.
View video here.
Alison Stewart, who has on occasion subbed for Olbermann on "Countdown," did the newsreading honors. Here's the entirety of what she had to say:
ALISON STEWART: It is the priciest item ever sold on eBay. A letter, signed by 41 Democratic senators, criticizing talk show host Rush Limbaugh. It sold on eBay for over $2 million. It was sent to Clear Channel, the owner of Limbaugh's show, about his "phony soldier" comment. Limbaugh said he was taken out of context and put it up for auction. A charitable foundation bought it, and the money raised will go to children of the Marines.
I waited for Stewart's mention of Rush's matching donation, but it never came. As Rush stated on his show yesterday:
The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, it's now official, is going to get in excess of $4.2 million because I am matching Betty Casey's bid [of $2.1 million] on eBay.
Could NBC possibly have been unaware of Limbaugh's contribution? Or do you suppose the network simply didn't want viewers to know of Rush's generosity?
Note: NBC's stingy coverage of Rush's generosity isn't the only MSM mishandling of the issue today. As Power Line points out, the New York Times story on the matter begins by misrepresenting Rush's original remark, regurgitating the Dem spin that "phony soldiers" was an allusion to all anti-war veterans. First sentence of Times story:
After Rush Limbaugh referred to Iraq war veterans critical of the war as “phony soldiers,” he received a letter of complaint signed by 41 Democratic senators.

They also fail to mention...
October 20, 2007 - 14:36 ET by ThisnThat.... that Rush is a board member of this charity and has donated hugh sums of money
Do you think the MSM can be trusted to provide Who, What, Where, When, and Why anymore? Neither do I.

Did you catch Rush's
October 20, 2007 - 14:39 ET by ConservativeRexDid you catch Rush's comment that "none of the Libo Senators have offered to match his offer for the letter"?
A lot of those Demo Senators could afford to, but they won't. They are like so many other people in all walks of life, they talk a good game, but when it comes time to produce, they can't/won't.
Just remember the ramifications of what transpired in the United States Senate for one second. The most august body in the free world, took the time to condemn a private citizen, an American citizen at that, for what even if it wasn't taken out of context, should have been protected by free speech! To me, that is astounding!!
Where are the armed protest against our Senate?? How are we allowing them to get away with this outrage?? This is OUR Senate, OUR Senate floor!!
They won't even reserve this kind of outrage against tyrants that deserve this kind of condemnation!!
I am ashamed of our Senate! I am ashamed that this is the body of jellyfish that we have to present to the villains of the world as representative of us the American people!
These cowards are criminally coward!! True Americans, true patriots, MUST run these rascals clear out of OUR Senate in '08. If we continue to allow this spineless collection of eunuchs to run our country, then it is us who are criminally insane I am afraid. We know our duty, we must carry it out.
The story reveals everything
October 20, 2007 - 14:47 ET by KC MulvilleAs a matter of national consequence, this story is nothing. However, because it reveals how the media works, it’s everything. Everything we’ve been saying about the bias of the media is on full display in the story. To put it another way, the media couldn't have reported the story this way -- unless everything we complain about them was true.
The core problem with the media is that in a country that’s slightly more conservative than liberal, the media is an enclosed liberal club. Most reporters are liberal, and they live and work among fellow liberals. They have no conservatives in the newsroom or in the studio, or at least not enough to make a difference. That’s why the classic anecdote about the reporter’s reaction to the Nixon landslide is so revealing: she didn’t know anyone who had voted for Nixon, even though it was a huge landslide.
Watch how liberals treat conservatives in journalism schools. See how liberals froth at the mouth at FoxNews, the only place where liberals don’t overrun conservatives. They want the government to censor talk radio, because the mere presence of conservatives threatens their fragile worldview.
KC, what you said about
October 20, 2007 - 15:58 ET by motherbeltKC, what you said about their knowledge of the story and their perspective is true.
The problem is that they don't do their own research, they don't verify anything; they just accept what Harry and his henchmen spoon-feed them, and report it as fact. They're not interested in any other side of the story, or even if that is the whole story.
Look at the NY Times article; they ended it by saying the Democrats were going to raise a ton of money for a charity!! And Dingy Harry up there at the end, encouraging everyone to go and donate to this worthy cause, as if it was all his idea all along.
They make me ill.
Agreed. And ...
October 20, 2007 - 16:24 ET by KC MulvilleI haven't heard ... did Harry Reid pledge to donate anything himself? I guess I can't blame him for not contributing to something that's designed to mock him.
However, if we accept the way the New York Times is reporting it, then we can honestly prove that Harry Reid is getting half of "his" fundraising effort from ... Rush Limbaugh !!!
First, in order to be a
October 20, 2007 - 15:10 ET by drillanwrFirst, in order to be a "veteran", you ACTUALLY have to have BEEN a Soldier/Marine ...
Second, my definition of "phony soldiers" DOES include those who return and then lie about:
1) combat experience(s)
2) fictional military atrocities they claim to have witnessed and/or participated in
3) claim(s) that they were in certain special units they were NOT in (including claims they were in certain areas/countries they were not in)
4) claim to have been awarded certain medals/accommodations ... especially when seeking elected office or business positions
5) someone who returns and does any of the above items, and then expects NOT to be criticized or called for it simply because they served (and you didn't)
Real Soldiers/Rangers/Marines/Sailors/Seals do not seek publicity for their service, or heroics. When singled out, these men always decline fussy recognition, and even go as far as deflecting their hero status onto the men they served with ... especially those who died. (See: Lt. Michael Murphy, et al, in Marcus Luttrell's "Lone Survivor" )
PS
Having mapped out the above "phony soldier(s)" ... I may add that while there have been/are several, and growing, cases of phony soldiers ... The number of phony reporters/journalists/news agencies will ALWAYS far out-number them ...

Rush Limbaugh: Something which needs to be noted
October 20, 2007 - 18:04 ET by Lame CherryNo one has mentioned the most fascinating thing about Rush Limbaugh whether in his program or in this major event exposing Dingy Harry.......I use the word ding.
Mr. Limbaugh has been experiencing and watching these attacks on others and I would bet an EIB golden mic that Rush has just been sitting there waiting for these dingbats to pull something like this so he could run with it. That is how far ahead this guy is compared to the rest of inhumanity.
I would venture from moment before that the Eugene B. Casey foundation and other Conservatives were well aware of this auction and would play a part in making this a story and benefit charity.
It is amazing to watch Rush Limbaugh when he gets going on big projects........he does it a hundred times a day on his program setting up, leading and answering the issue, but for him to have caught all these liberals with their pants down.......and now forever it will be the highest bid in ebay will be Rush Limbaugh being attacked in a letter by Democrats.......that kind of publicity can not be purchased and stupid Harry Reid led his mob right into the ambush.
Bravo Mr. Limbaugh as you have shown you are the only one who could donate over 2 million, the only one who could bring in bidders of that price and the only one who could lead these liberals into a trap of their own making.
I want people to GET THAT POINT, Rush Limbaugh got 41 of these communist democrats to do something he had planned.
That is something which needs to be made note of as Mr. Limbaugh is not about to bring this up as his operation is one of the best in the world and how he operates is his trade secret, but for those who study him or pay attention he lets enough be known so people who appreciate the art of Limbaugh can just smile at how very adept he is at working his plan.

Not only did NBC omit that
October 20, 2007 - 19:22 ET by FairlightNot only did NBC omit that fact, but they also got a major fact WRONG: It is not the "priciest item ever sold on eBay." It is the priciest CHARITABLE item ever sold on eBay.
But who cares about facts when the network has the cheapest talent they can find read the teleprompter.
Come on
October 20, 2007 - 22:45 ET by Aetius728Guess what folks? This is what I mean when I say that very few people outside of our rightwing talk radio/blog community are aware of the truth. The people that get their news from the MSM, and there is still a substantial amount of people who do, are unaware that the smear was contrived, and unaware as well that Rush is matching the donation, or that he challenged the Senators who signed the letter to do the same. Of the people that don't follow news that closely, only those that see a little headline on their MSN or Yahoo homepage or hear a sentence during a newsbreak on their rock or R&B station know anything about any of this. Care to guess what perspective they are getting? The choir has heard the sermon, but the rest of the people have not. I have made this point here and elsewhere in the past.
Rush irritated Harry Reid and raised a ton of money, two admirable accomplishments. But in terms of PR he did not accomplish anything like he or others seem to think he did. Don't believe me? Go out on the street tomorrow and stop 20 people. See how many of them know anything about this controversy and of those that do how many honestly believe that Rush smeared the troops, and are unaware that he matched the donation and challenged Reid et. al. to do the same.
If I was Rush, I'd show up early Monday morning at Times Square and get a position at the front of the crowd of the Today Show holding a huge sign that reads something along the lines of "I matched the 2.1 million dollars, Harry Reid won't you do the same? And then when Meredith or Matt came over to me(OK, they might simply ignore him, but I doubt it) I would publicly denounce NBC for leaving that part out, and I'd challenge Harry Reid to donate an equal sum, and I would also point out that he has acquired at least that much through shady land deals. I know it sounds silly, but the sad truth is that despite the enormous audiences guys like Rush and Sean have, and the people that read sites like NB and other conservative sites, a frighteningly large percentage of Americans are very ill informed. They need to be reached, and no matter how eloquently Rush speaks on his show or how passionately you blog hear at NB, they are not going to be exposed to the truth.
The Dems are Pros
October 20, 2007 - 22:49 ET by pbthinkerThe Dems are pros at this. They never have to back off their comments because the media will never admit they're wrong about this. They will keep hammering away and will have a majority of the population believing them vs. Rush. (Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth). We don't have a free press in this country we have a propaganda arm for a political party.
Democrats: Specializing in "high tech lynching" since 1987.
