Apocalypse Now: Globe's Global Warmist Makes Even Gore Look Cool

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

When it comes to global-warming alarmism, it takes a lot to make Al Gore look moderate. Even the IPCC, the UN group that shared the Nobel with him, predicts on average a sea-level rise only 1/12th as high as the 20 feet by 2100 that Gore has forecast.

But when it comes to sky-is-burning scaremongering, the former Veep has met his match in the person of Paul Epstein. The scenario he sketches in his "Looking back"column in today's Boston Globe is so wildly alarmist that you could imagine a sci-fi movie Hollywood honcho rejecting it as too implausible.

As far as Epstein's concerned, the apocalypse can't wait till 2100 He looks back from only next year to predict the following litany of environmental disasters:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

  • Most outdoor events at the Beijing Olympics were canceled this August due to stifling heat and abysmal air. Populations the world over spilled onto sun-sered streets this summer, escaping baking hovels and failing farms, demanding swift action on climate change.
  • Extremes and volatility have become the new norm, as unwieldy winds whipped up over warming seas and lands usher in rapidly shifting fronts.
  • In China, dust storms lifting off expanding deserts, mixed with black soot and brown haze from proliferating coal-fired power plants, were now laced with snowlike drifts of pollen from poplars that ring Beijing.
  • Runners could not run; jumpers could not jump. The massive business interruption cascaded through global financial markets.
  • In the land down under, dense drought has deepened. This summer, Australia - like southern Europe this past August - was again inflamed by wildfires.
  • In North America, advancing bark beetles have shredded western forests, as forest fires, sparked by lightning, fueled by lifeless limbs and fanned by fickle winds exact a mounting toll on animals, humans, property, air quality, and watersheds send pulses of carbon amplifying global warming.
  • "Peak oil" - after which oil sources decline - turned out to be closer in the mirror than it first appeared, and food prices climbed steeply.

Scary stuff. But Epstein holds out a ray of hope: the Democrats are coming, and they want to spend a ton of your money [emphasis added]:

Finally, the 2008 elections are upon us. Some candidates are calling for an end to the era of oil as a necessary step for peace with one another and with nature. A courageous few are proposing a huge investment in our common future.

And just who is the author of this apocalyptic, partisan vision? "Dr. Paul R. Epstein is associate director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School." Reassuring, isn't it, to know that the medical elites of tomorrow are being indoctrinated with this kind of stuff?

Globe Loves Eco-Gloom

From the Notable Quotables file, proof that the Boston Globe loves wild predictions of eco-gloom:

"In sports, tonight's game between the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox was called off when Chicago was blanketed with impenetrable smog....Meteorologist Yojio Matsuma says the smog originated 1,000 miles away in the Saskatchewan prairie fires, which have seared several thousand square miles since lightning storms sparked an area left tinder-dry by a three-week heat wave and an unusually dry spring....Meanwhile, the commissioner's office says it is not yet ready to consider a resumption of day games, which were eliminated 15 years ago following widespread increases in skin cancer and immune diseases due to the depletion of the ozone layer."
-- Reporter Ross Gelbspan's fake news story from 2030 in The Boston Globe's "Earth: Our Children's Peril" series, May 31, 1992.

So, since 1992 the sky has been falling

Tim, you could probably gone back further in time to find more world ending crisis's, but the internet transcription of Historical blatherings is in it's infantcy......and would require Library visits.

Al Gore has now shunned the Office of the Presidency of the USA, and has moved above and beyond, to the lofty post of

"Planetary Manager"

He's taking over the management of the Planet, and per this latest Nobel Award will be doing even MORE CO 2 emissions from flying around.

Meanwhile, back to the "End of the Oil era" from this article, i would suggest the writer try and drive a hybird out of his Driveway without Gas........Definition of a hybird, is that it still uses BOTH Gas and electric....so, I'm not too impressed with the "end" of Oil,  and we'd better start drilling for more.....because the age of Energy without Oil/Natural Gas is NOT upon us.

Somehow, Just writing about it, doesn't make it happen.

What good is a Free Press, if it is a False Press ?   David Foote  GoE

Uggh

Okay as a meteorolgist a lot of this stuff can be explained without throwing global warming junk out there.

First of all Australia has been a desert and will always be a desert as they are positioned about 30 S latitude. The same is the case around 30 N latitude where you get most of the Northern hemisphere deserts (Sahara, SW US). Drought begets drought.

I imagine the majority of the reason Beijing was so unbearable is because of the urban heat island effects caused by buildings and concrete.

...and while burning trees does increase carbon amount it does also introduce a lot of ash, dirt, and dust into the air which reflects the sun's rays and would cause cooling.

Finally, the 2008 elections

Finally, the 2008 elections are upon us. Some candidates are calling for
an end to the era of oil as a necessary step for peace with one another
and with nature.

Yeah, great. Only they don't want nuclear energy, the best solution to our energy problems. They really think we can run the world on wind and solar power. Oh, and don't forget...no windmills where there are birds. Or Kennedys.

IMO this so called

IMO this so called environmental activism is actually a cover for extreme marxist philosophy. The deluded wish of the proponents of this insanity is too move humanity back to the pre-industrial era believing this to be a golden age.  This self-loathing and hatred of mankind and its products could lead to massive slaughter and destruction with it's preview in Pol Pot's Cambodia. I firmly believe these people wish that most of the world's population would disappear so they (the elect) all could live like American Indians in peace and harmony with nature. (sarcasm on)

Ok, I'm just going to go

Ok, I'm just going to go back to bed.  I can't go on.  I mean, life is over!  Cheeeeezzeee!  This guy needs serious therapy.

Well at least Mr. Epstein

Well at least Mr. Epstein has gotten to the core of the issue hasn't he?  There is a problem, the problem needs a solution, the solution needs to be implimented and the implimentation requires leadership.  Which leadership?  Democrats of course.  So there we are, the continued justification for the existence of Democrats to exercise power, they have a problem to solve, and power must be wielded.  If there is no problem then who needs leadership???????

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity

Democrats?    I would

Democrats?    I would expect Dr. Epstein's solutions are more akin to Salinists.

The real question about

The real question about this Epstein is whether anyone will remember these wild predictions after they fail to materialize as predicted and if they do remember them, will anyone with authority take any action to reduce Dr. Epstein's influence?   My thought is no.  He, like Dr. James Hansen, will be allowed to continue to pollute young minds with this baseless trash.  Indeed, these gentlemen receive public funds to continue this service.

They think nothing of stifling opinions contrary to their own through the use of government coecrion.  It is a tragedy the same rules do not apply to them.

Is it possible to put this

Is it possible to put this in kind of an electronic time capsule.  Maybe Mark could do it. To pop up at the time of the olympics to be brought up again? It would be fun to see how many predictions come through. And to remind everyone. Kind of like the ticking clock on Al Gore's 10 years. Or the malaria clock.

The politicization of

The politicization of science is impossible without the participation of some scientists in it. Politicians in both tyrannies and democracies are susceptible to scientists who say that they can show the way to manage nature without all the complicated baggage of ordinary science. How attractive the bright, adventurous, and brave individuals are who cast off the burdensome limitations of facts and theory that constrain the scientists who disagree with them.

A "people’s academic," Trofim Lysenko promised to revolutionize the laws of agriculture, just as his Communist masters were trying to revolutionize human society.

TheSoviet Union forcibly collectivized agriculture in 1928 and forced peasants to surrender their land, livestock, and machinery and to join collective farms. All grain was confiscated from the peasants, even grain needed for planting the following year’s crops. Massive famines followed in 1929 and the early 1930s. Several million peasants starved to death in the Ukraine, and the Red Army was used to collect the grain harvest, such as it was, because whole villages had perished from hunger.

Lysenko declared that the genetics of Mendel’s peas and Morgan’s fruit flies was incorrect and simply a capitalist plot to exploit the peasants and working class.

Some brave Soviet biologists opposed Lysenko and many paid for this with their jobs or even their lives.

The above are exerps from the Harmful Politization of Science by William Happer. "I lost a federal position because of citing scientific research findings that undermined a politician’s rhetoric." The politician whose rhetoric was undermined was then vice president, Al Gore.

There are people who think they're the only ones who know the answers. They can be dangerous.

Unfortunately we're not in uncharted waters.

Most Americans are

Most Americans are complacent in their belief that things in this country will continue as before. If they are not careful we can unknowingly usher in a government that is totalitarian with all the ugly consequences. We also believe that logic and rationality will always prevail. If the Hitler and Stalin Regimes et al teach us that irrationality and their subsequent misery and evil consequences can prevail for very long periods of time.

You are absolutely right.

You are absolutely right.  We should be very wary of any politicians who propose suspending habeus corpus, domestic spying, rendition, and detention without legal recourse.  Any administration that insists on excess secrecy, use of executive priviledge and refusal to testify before Congress should be viewed with suspicion.  Liberties once lost can be very difficult to get back.

You mean these listed

You mean these listed activities in times of peace and not fighting for our existence or immediate threat of attack we should be suspicious (not trust) or critical of leaders who advocate or engage in these activities? Correct? If so, you would have just about everyone's agreement.

If however, you are saying not trust or allow leeway to our leaders during times of national emergency, threat of attack, or war, then what you are advocating is that the Constitution is a suicide pact.  On this we as conservatives will disagree most strenuously.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity

Just to underline my point

Just to underline my point about peace time versus immanent threat of terrorism and the need for the activities you seem to be afraid of:  http://www.northjersey.com/page.php?qstr=eXJpcnk3ZjczN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXkyNjMmZmdiZWw3Zjd2cWVlRUV5eTcyMDgyODgmeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXky

Task force investigators have discovered that every major terrorist group in the world, including Hamas and Hezbollah, has at least one North Jersey contact. The lone exception is Afghanistan's ultra-fundamentalist sect, the Taliban.

To deny the reach, timing and intent of terrorists on American targets is akin to sticking one's head in the sand.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity

You can't put terrorist in

You can't put terrorist in jail that's so barbaric.  Especially people who are at war with us.

Now conservatives, and republicans and any scientist that speaks againt the "proven" truth.

I wasn't speaking about the

I wasn't speaking about the imaginary abuses of the Bush Administration but of the omnipresent effort of the left in this country to turn the US into a socialist paradise. I wasn't trolling for trolls but apparently  I hooked one.

Oh....I'm a warming-jack,

Oh....I'm a warming-jack, I'm not O.K.

I fret all night, and I scheme all day

I take in grants, I wet my pants, I don't like to use T.P.

I wish I was Al -Gorey, so people'd notice me.....

No Wonder

No wonder the left and the Dems don't want freedom of choice in education. They don't want anyone teaching people anything other than their preferred doctrines and points of view.

Wildcatter, I'd say you struck oil with that one.
