'Hardball' Matthews Shows Soft Side; John Kerry, Super-Bore

The fellow synonymous with "Hardball" showed his soft side today. Interviewed by his wife to help mark the show's 10th anniversary and promote his new book, "Life's a Campaign,"Chris Matthews was frequently emotional as he talked about everything from his heroes [including JFK, Churchill and Hemingway], his drinking days and his admiration for John McCain's patriotism.

In contrast, Kathleen Matthews, a former TV news anchor, exuded a composed professionalism. A nice, cool balance to Chris's fire, it seemed.

Later, John Kerry reminded us of what we didn't, shall we say, necessarily love about the guy.

View video here.

At show's end, a montage was run of highlights of Matthews's ten years of "Hardball." There were clips of a cavalcade of guests, including Arnold, Robin Williams, George Bush, Al Gore, Al Sharpton and many more, including the famous moment with Zell Miller at the 2004 GOP telling Chris to "get out of my face" and regretting he couldn't challenge Matthews to a duel.

No one, not even Michael Moore, got on my nerves. With one exception. I'd encourage folks to check out John Kerry, whose moment comes 3:10 into the clip.

Pomposity personified.

Update: Matthews might have been displaying his soft side, but it didn't take him long to revert to form. At a reception after the show, he reportedly accused the Bush admin of "criminality." This from a man scheduled to moderate a GOP presidential debate this coming week.

Chris Matthews

If his on-air behavoir is indicative of his home life, his wife has her hands full.

I wonder if he cuts her

I wonder if he cuts her off, talks over her, and drowns her in flying saliva? No, I didn't think so.

Zell Miller

Hurry for Zell. What a great personality!

Good One, Mark.

Chrissy's been on for ten years?  Wow!  He's really become unbearable lately tho....in the early years his show was actually watchable.

My favorite part of the vid clip was Anne Coulter...."the wife of a presidential candidate is telling me not to speak......NO".  A particularly telling little clip as to how far Matthews' show has devolved.  Gotcha.  Very mature & journalistically ethical.

Blonde,I think a lot of

Blonde,

I think a lot of us accepted Matthews early on because he took a hard line against Bill Clinton's crimes . We were blinded to the fact that, beneath all that, he was hard line liberal and a partisan (and ex-staffer) for the Democrats. He's become even more obnoxiously so, in the last few years.

Quite right, Chris

I used to watch Hardball early on...he was hard on the Clinton idiocy...and I liked his run-up to the 2000 elections.  His "college what-nots" forums with the candidates were really rather good.

But after GWB was elected, he just kind of went off the deep end.

He's now a parody of himself...a la SNL.

Blonde, I used to watch him

Blonde, I used to watch him with my mom, when I'd go over to her house for dinner - she was a news junkie. Those were the days, on MSNBC, when they had some good shows like Jerry Nachman's. Matthews, along with MSNBC, has devolved into crap over the years.

News Junkies

I hear you about news junkies...I used to be one.

But it just is so disheartening anymore.

Back in the day, MSNBC had John Gibson....and Laura Ingraham.  Worth watching.

Now I barely manage to turn on the tube to news.  I have it on in the a.m.  But as you know from my F&F rant the other day....not watching THAT!

Actually, Joe S. isn't too terrible...and they have at least ten minutes on before a bloody commercial.  If you ignore that airhead Mika it's not too bad.  Relatively speaking, of course.

CSPAN won't get really good for another six months or so...then it will be must see TV.

Unfortunately....I don't pay to get the "good" channels in my bedroom....so a.m. viewing is just to kind of keep me occupied while I get ready to waltz out the door.  Background noise.

Hey Blonde

He's now a parody of himself...a la SNL.

Blonde,  come closer,  no no closer  . . . .

Sigh...I just love her...

Yes, I love Anne Coulter...I can reveal it in here because I'm anonymous.  I wish I could give her my excess poundage, however...then we'd be the perfect couple.  :)  Anyway, back to Matthews...ya know, liberals are the only group I know who get all emotional and teary-eyed with pride over practicing personal and professional traits and behaviors that honorable people would consider dishonest, unpatriotic, anti-God, smut peddling, anti-flag, anti-military, advocating of murder (abortion,) anti-America, and hatred of Anne Coulter.  I've probably left out a few here.

Sunrise at sea; a breeze across the deck, salty spray tickles the face, the aroma of fresh coffee, stack gas, and haze-gray paint is in the air...and a new junior officer leans over the side, puking his guts out.

What is it with all of you guys wanting to fatten Anne up a bit?  Seriously?

She looks great!

Talks even better.  How I love her conserve put-downs of the liberally-impaired.

Just wondering there.   What is up w/that?

Coulter

May be great for b**ch slapping libs, but she's not the #1 "blonde" around here if you know what I mean.

Nah...not "fatten"

I'd like to see her put on just enough, in the right places (no, not there) for the libs to stop saying she "looks like a Holocaust survivor," and referring to her as "that skinny b***h," etc.  Oh no, I like her fine just the way she is; I just hate the way her physical appearance generates hateful comments.  (But then I've read comments by conservatives about Hillary's legs, her bottom, her ankles...and, well, that makes me a wee bit uncomfortable also.)

But in fact, I wouldn't care what Anne looks like...I admire the way she turns a phrase even more than the turn of her ankle.  And, I was just saying that I'd be willing to give my excess baggage to anybody who could use it.

So, one of his heroes -

So, one of his heroes - JFK - said that the US would "Pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

Today, Matthews sneers at people who say things like that and dismisses them as "Jacobin neocons".  Even more remarkably, he states that we are using "fascist" (!!) methods to promote democracy in Iraq and elsewhere.

 JFK would slap him silly.

He really has embraced the

He really has embraced the new, sneering, liberalism.

Did people see the Kerry

Did people see the Kerry clip? Comments? Am I wrong, did he not stick out as the least personable, most inauthentic, of the lot?

Mark:

That's "liveshot" by definition. Fake, zero personality, elitist...and to me it looked like he stopped by "Hardball" on his way back from Happy Hour.

Lerch loves to remind people he had the same initials as John Kennedy. A real common man this guy. When he was Lt. Governor of Massachusetts he loved to use the line "do you know who I am" when in the company of  plebians who did not immediately recognize him.

You definately have the "Right Angle" on that asessment of Kerry!

Thanks, CIM. A nice summing

Thanks, CIM. A nice summing up by one who should know!

His drinking days ... Past

His drinking days ... Past tense?  You mean this is Matthews sober?

Anyhow, Chris has a very busy night life ... being completely wrong is a full time career:

Matthews says Bush administration has "finally been caught in their criminality"

I find it hard to believe

I find it hard to believe that he admires Churchill. Unless he was referring to Ward Churchill.

Winston would have nothing to do with this bloated gasbag.

Liberal: a power worshipper without power. George Orwell

" I find it hard to believe

" I find it hard to believe that he admires Churchill. Unless he was referring to Ward Churchill."

LOL -- good line!

Matthews' show remains

Matthews' show remains mired in a humiliating FOURTH place out of FIVE shows, and Matthews has only 1/4 the audience of Fox News at 7 p.m.  The latest abysmal ratings for Matthews:

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

7PM - P2+ (25-54)
FOX Report with Shepard Smith – 1,204,000 viewers (317,000)
Situation Room – 450,000 viewers (123,000)
Glenn Beck – 384,000 viewers (161,000)

Hardball– 313,000 viewers (109,000)
On the Money – 180,000 viewers (a scratch with 18,000)

ok i'm only a dumb conservative

but how do you make a hardball out of nonsubstance fluff???

anyone?

anyone?

lunaticcringeradio

}}---> Hardball - the origin

I think you have to swallow the fluff and reingest it every time you expel it.

I don't know from personal experience, but I see it done every day.

After several iterations, it gets harked up as a slimy tight little hairball thing.  Because these hairballs are difficult to regurgitate after passing through the digestive tract multiple times, a Lib might say "I had a hard time with that hairball"  The term "hard hairball" was later shortened to "hardball.

Hope that helps.

Unbearable.

Unbearable.

Not one thing

What struck me in this is Chris Matthews has prostituted himself, degrading himself and continues to make a fool out of himself........for 10 years...........and he has not accomplished one thing.

If this were my looking back on 10 years of life, I would be horrified that I wasted a decade with not one thing to show for it. I would consider myself an utter failure..........and yet like Olberman this Matthews keeps chasing the ring which vanishes from his aging site.

I honestly right now feel sorry for Chris Matthews in being so blind he can not see. It is the little things in life in being an example of caring about others which is all that counts........and not once in 10 years has Matthews ever done what was right or important in life.

That is all very sad considering the opportunity God has given Chris Matthews.........and he simply has disgraced himself.
