Bubble Boy? NYT's Rosenthal 'Can't Tell' Maureen Dowd's Politics

I would defy anyone to label Maureen Dowd by party affiliation or ideology. I've known her and worked closely with her for 20 years and I can't tell you the answer to either one -- Andrew Rosenthal, editorial page editor of The New York Times

What would be worse: that when Times editorial page editor Rosenthal claims not to know Maureen Dowd's politics he's not being honest -- or that he is?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The Times's online edition contains a long column by Rosenthal responding to reader questions. Here are annotated highlights in addition to the Dowd rib-tickler:

The news report produced by the news staff of The Times is the heart and soul of this newspaper. Its mission is to bring our readers the best reported, best written, most carefully edited and most attractively produced report on paper and on the Internet, founded on the principle that the role of the newsroom is to provide a dispassionate accounting of events, free of political or ideological coloration.

Andy's gonna be at the Laff Shack all week. Don't forget to tip your waitress.

We are passionate opponents of all forms of authoritarian behavior by the federal government.

This from the paper that would impinge on citizens' Second Amendment rights, tell them where to smoke, what to drive, what not to eat, make it impossible for many to have their children educated in accordance with their values, and use government power to regulate virtually every aspect of life and take away roughly half of everything citizens earn.

Responding to a number of questions asking whether the Times is liberal, Rosenthal takes 350 words to conclude that "labels are of little use." Andy thus puts himself at odds with former ombudsman Daniel Okrent. Three years ago in his column "Is The New York Times a Liberal Newspaper?" Okrent acknowledged in his opening line: "Of course it is."

What can you say about a paper and its editor that is so unwilling or incapable of acknowledging reality on so many fronts?

Note: Clay Waters of NB's sister publication "Times Watch" wrote here earlier about Rosenthal's column, also focusing on the editor's inability to identify MoDo's politics.

Wow...

Rosenthal must be the last person in the USA not to know Maureen's politics, if he really believes what he's saying. Clearly, a number of us would welcome his defiance regarding Ms. Dowd with gales of laughter...

As for his "authoritiarian behavior by the Federal government" comment, I'm going to try to give him the benefit of the doubt... Maybe he believes that they only support authoritarian measures by the NY state government? Because it's beyond-obvious to any casual observer that the Times editorial board supports a wide variety of authoritarian rules/regulations/laws -- and with a passion!

Hmmm

Maybe he doesn't read her columns?

I wonder. Does his family name have anything to do with his position. There could not be nepotism at the Once Respected New York Times?

Does his family name have anything to do with his position

His father is the late Abe Rosenthal who was the executive editor in the late '70s and '80s and a columnist afterwards.

Very nice man and certainly more to the "center" than just about anyone working for the Times during that period. He and Anthony Lewis would cross swords occasionally as Lewis, an abject socialist apologist for the Soviets and other communists, wished to push the paper further to the Left. Rosenthal resisted the attempts.

"I would defy anyone to label Maureen Dowd by party affiliation or

Wow. I know the powers of self-delusion in those on the Left is legendary, but this sets the bar at a new high! For him to think that he can just say that and we'll accept it as truth is a perfect example of their arrogance and disdain for the general public.

He can't laber her party affiliation or ideology after 20 years? Let's see...we've had a good cross-section of political ideologies in the office of President of the United States over 20 years: George W. Bush, William Jefferson Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and I'm sure she has shared her opinions of Ronald W. Reagan a time or two. He can't figure out from what she's said where her political attitudes lie?

Is THIS the man that the shareholders of Time, Inc. want heading the editorial staff of their editorial page? Someone this clueless?

Were I a major shareholder, I'd be more mad than ever!

It sounds like Rosenthal has been 'sleeping with the eneny'. There can be no other reason for such a ludicrous assertion.

Hey Andrew! Maureen Dowd is a left-wing wacko, a libiot...now you know...write it down so your don't forget...

We're against

We're against "authoritarian behavior by the Federal government".

Hmm...

Like, for example: Confiscatory and punitive tax rates? Punishing people for "thought" crimes? Requiring businesses to have "diverse" workforces? Taking property without fair compensation?

And on and on and on....

I guess that's "good" authoritarianism, one done in the name of "progressive" values or policies. The other kind is "bad" authoritarianism.

Frankly, I'm not sure I want someone who doesn't know the political leanings of Maureen Dowd telling me about the proper role of government.

Well, forget the "I'm not sure". I'm sure.

Not sayin' that Rosenthal is crazy

but he shouldn't be surprised to see a large Indian coming at him with a pillow soon.

Nice "coocoo's nest"

LOL-C'mon, nobody is that stupid, now are they? If he really believes that, then perhaps he should get out more.

A lot more.

Responding to a number of

Responding to a number of questions asking whether the Times is liberal, Rosenthal takes 350 words to conclude that "labels are of little use."

Really?  Is that your final answer Mr. Rosenthal? Did not your paper just run a full page ad of a four star general commanding an active theater of war a BETRAYER? Oh, I know what your response is, it wasn't "our" ad. We publish everything, freedom of speech you know. Thats why you wouldn't run a response to it.

What is placed in your paper IS your publications opinion, period. You rats love to hide behind "labels" when it suits you, but abandon them when they become embarrassing. And if a "label" can be used to throw someone you disagree with under the bus, you don't hesitate attaching one.

Why are you people so afraid to identify yourselves as liberals? You espouse the leftist cause relentlessly every day (hence, the 5 year slide in stock valuation). For once in your life, stand up and be a man. Say what you and your buddies at the Times are,  L I B E R A L S.

The old commie playbook you employ has been tried and has failed.  You need a new gameplan. The game of advancing an ideology through total government contol has repeatedly failed.

Better hurry up before an evil capitalist hedge fund comes in and buys out the reminants of your once proud fish wrap. Your stock is approaching bargain basement prices...

to conclude that "Labels

to conclude that "Labels are of little use."

Well, we all know what ye olde "Labels are of little use" means.

As far as I can recall, I've never heard someone on the Right dismiss "labels" similarly. One can say that they are imprecise or not always accurate (of course); but to completely wave off their usage usually tells us more about the person than they wish for us to know.

A Lefty

Maureen called Kerry "a lame candidate" during the 2004 campaign. That doesn't make her a lefty, but she is.

After reading only

After reading only Rosenthal's quote in the first paragraph, and before reading any of the posts, allow me to try to do what Rosenthal "defies" anyone to do: Maureen Dowd's political affiliation is Democrat, and her politics are far left.

Hey, Rosie, do I get a kewpie doll for doing what you thought can't be done?

Now I'll read the rest of the article and the comments.

I think you read the Title Wrong

I think what he is trying to say is, he is professionally obligated to "not tell" MoDo's Poli-Offiliation.

Can't Tell, as in , I am not allowed to by both my empoyer and my liberal oath.

Wall Street's Opinion

On Friday NYT's stock closed under $20.

That is almost an eleven year low.

Keeping the Lie Alive

Andrew Rosenthal, keeping the lie alive at the NY Times.  This guy couldn't possibly be an editor, for any other paper than the NY Times.  Perhaps he should ask Maureen, I'm sure she'd tell him he was a moron for not being able to figure it out himself.

Never argue with an idiot.  They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

All libs lie.  He's lying.  He knows she's a liberal democrat.  That's what qualifies one to work for the Times.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

A BIG LIE from the small bubble.

You would think that after getting caught with its pants down with Move-On.Org that the New York Times would finally undergo internal house cleaning. But no, we trot out Andrew Rosenthal to pompously proclaim that the paper is still the paragon of unbaised journalistic integrity (just like in his daddy's days). Kind of makes me remember the laughable "Bagdad Bob." You know, the infamous Iraq spokesman who laughably proclaimed the Sadam regime was winning the war as U.S. troops marched past him.

In the Times case, it's not troops marching past, but its own plunging stock.

Not only did he intern there, for a long time he was their Iraqi corresponent.  He also moonlighted for CNN.  Here is his last broadcast for them.  The site also contains some of his most memorable reports.  Let us not forget this other star of the middle east.  She is unique among NYT "reporters" in that she willingly displays her biases.
