Mapes's Mother-of-all-Rants

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

How can I put this nicely? Mary Mapes [file photo] has reality "issues." Three years after the Memogate producer was exposed for having perpetrated one of the worst frauds in the history of presidential-campaign journalism, she continues to paint herself as the victim of a right-wing conspiracy. And incredibly, despite a mountain of incontrovertible evidence to the contrary, she clings to the notion that the blatantly forged documents at the heart of Memogate were authentic.

Mapes's meltdown-in-the-guise-of-a-column appeared in yesterday's Huffington Post. Excerpts from the metaphor-gone-wild "Courage for Dan Rather" [emphasis added]:

  • [We] reaped a whirlwind of right-wing outrage and talk radio retaliation. That part of the assault on our story was not unexpected. In September 2004, anyone who had the audacity to even ask impertinent questions about the president was certain to be figuratively kicked in the head by the usual suspects.
  • What was different in our case was the brand new and bruising power of the conservative blogosphere, particularly the extremists among them. They formed a tightly knit community of keyboard assault artists who saw themselves as avenging angels of the right, determined to root out and decimate anything they believed to be disruptive to their worldview.
  • They organized, with the help of longtime well-connected Republican activists, and began their assault.
  • Actually, we had done a straightforward, well-substantiated story.
  • And we showed for the first time a cache of documents allegedly written by Bush's former commander . . . We reported that since these documents were copies, not originals, they could not be fully authenticated, at least not in the legal sense. They could not be subjected to tests to determine the age of the paper or the ink. We did get corroboration on the content and support from a couple of longtime document analysts saying they saw nothing indicating that the memos were not real.
  • Instantly, the far right blogosphere bully boys pronounced themselves experts on document analysis, and began attacking the form and font in the memos. They screamed objections that ultimately proved to have no basis in fact. But they captured the argument. They dominated the discussion by churning out gigabytes of mind-numbing internet dissertations about the typeface in the memos, focusing on the curl at the end of the "a," the dip on the top of the "t," the spacing, the superscript, which typewriters were used in the military in 1972.
  • It was a deceptive approach, and it worked.
  • [A]t 75 years old, Rather still has more reportorial testosterone than the entire employee roster at FOX News. It is a tremendous injustice to journalism that he has to go to court to be treated with respect.
  • Courage, buddy. Courage to us all.

As over-the-top as these excerpts are, I encourage you to view the entire column: there's much more, and read as a whole the picture emerges of a deeply-disturbed woman.

A few comments on the specifics:

  • "[The documents] could not be fully authenticated."

Too true, Mary. But they could be thoroughly discredited and demonstrated to be amateurish forgeries, as they were within hours.

  • "We did get corroboration on the content and support from a couple of longtime document analysts saying they saw nothing indicating that the memos were not real."

Corrobation on the content? Fake-but-accurate rides again! And "support" from whom? Certainly not from forensic document analysts. Not even from avid amateurs, who within hours of the story's airing were able to conclusively demonstrate that the documents in question could not have been created in the '70s and had obviously been prepared by computer.

  • "[T]he far right blogosphere bully boys pronounced themselves experts on document analysis, and began attacking the form and font in the memos. They screamed objections that ultimately proved to have no basis in fact."

No basis in fact? I challenge Mapes to debunk this "Little Green Footballs" item of September 10, 2004. The author overlays the infamous "CYA" Memogate document on a Word document he created. It's not just a good fit. Not merely a close fit. It is an absolutely perfect, down to the last jot-and-tittle fit. Mapes has no basis in reality.

  • They dominated the discussion by churning out gigabytes of mind-numbing internet dissertations about the typeface in the memos, focusing on the curl at the end of the "a," the dip on the top of the "t," the spacing, the superscript, which typewriters were used in the military in 1972.

How boring for Mary, all those typewriter thingies. What Mapes calls "mind-numbing" is actually the kind of straightforward work CBS should have done before airing its story. But Mapes et al. weren't about to let a mass of mere facts take their eyes off the prize of bringing down President Bush.

What's ultimately most revealing is that Mapes, with her obvious extreme animus toward the right, had a long career at CBS News as a top producer for Rather, the network's leading newsman. While Memogate ultimately outed her, how many hundreds, thousands, of stories did she shape over the years to suit the intensely partisan sentiments that she displays here?

As an objective journalist

... She isn't all that bad, there are a lot worse. Just needs to get out of the cocoon more often.

Well, your right if...

You take into account that she has absolutely no objectivity and her journalism skills were easily eclisped by a bunch of amatures and bloggers.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back!  Fred08.com

Stunning

I am stunned by Mapes and Rather's inabilities to perceive reality.  Crack-pots are not unique, but these two were at the pinnacle of "journalism"

That these two

lasted as long as they did is proof positive of left-wing media bias.

"Off" people like Rather and Mapes can survive and thrive in journalism because they're both left-wing meanwhile, temperate conservatives and libertarians find it hard to be anything more than a low-level grunt.

I just wonder...

...If CBS will throw open the works and discredit these two halfwits down to the ground.

Or if they'll just tamely submit to the public humiliation (Rather has said he will “absolutely not” agree to a purely financial settlement with
CBS to dismiss the lawsuit. “It’s not about the money; it’s about the
principle.”) http://www.newsmax.c...

Principle? Hah! These two are the most unprincipled pair since the Clintons.

(Rather has said he will

(Rather has said he will “absolutely not” agree to a purely financial settlement with
CBS to dismiss the lawsuit. “It’s not about the money; it’s about the
principle.”)

When someone says "It's not about the money, it's about the principle", It's about the money.

I would bet, if CBS said they would apologize publicly to Rather, but not give him a cent, he would then start talking about how they have damaged his ability to earn...he had more years coming to him, he would have earned another couple of million dollars over the next years of his contract, etc.

I think this line in the

I think this line in the column in the most telling:

We reported that since these documents were copies, not originals, they could not be fully authenticated, at least not in the legal sense.

She basically said that even though they knew the papers couldn't be fully authenticated, they ran with the story anyway. You know, important to get it out there.

Remember, when Mapes was asked, in an interview aftert that if they they didn't have an obligation to provide proof that the documents were authentic, she said (paraphrasing): no, I don't think that's the standard.

'Nuff said.

And Swift Boaters never challenged by any documents to contrary

People try and equate this with Swift Boaters are so wrong because no one ever brought forth any info to refute the Swift Boaters, whereas everyone was on this like ants on a picnic!!

The Swifties had one other advantage...

They weren't trying to sell a load of poorly manufactured hogwash.

It's really hard to challenge the truth.

It's the seriousness of the charge

Remember for the modern democrat party, reality isn't determined the old fashioned way, by observation, analysis, and verification, rather reality is determined by the seriousness of the accusation

Fiction trumps reality in their world. Deep down, they recognize they're in a world of word games and illusions, which is why they protest so emphatically that they're the Reality Based Community.

We're on to you, lefties.

Lies are the currency of the

Lies are the currency of the left. The truth doesn't matter in fact it gets in the way of promoting the agenda. That is why name calling, intimidation and the "righteousness" of your claims are more important than any truth. No matter how mild and benign you claim your socialist beliefs are they all stem from the deadly lies of the various communist revolutions where lies are the tools of policy and always lead to totalitarianism. Remember, to a leftie the ends always justify the means.

But try to understand, try

But try to understand, try to understand...

She's a magic man.

Good one.

Good one.

With any luck, this will

With any luck, this will turn into another Wellstone moment for the libtards... with a little finesse, this can stretch out til November '08.

And I thought they caught

And I thought they caught Bagdad Bob?

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Liberals vs. Reality

Is it that surprising that Libs like Rather and Mapes would eventually lose their grip on reality?

Liberalism is a denial of reality. THey go through their lives believing that protests will end human conflicts, that taxation will produce prosperity, that letting criminals out of prison is a better deterrent than locking them up...etc. etc. ad infinitum...

Look at Al Gore.  This guy actually believes his own lies.

You can't keep this up very long without going nuts.

Saying "Liberals are crazy" is not a pejorative, it's a description.

Reality??

"I believe in staring into the face of reality and denying it!"

Open letter to Ms. Mapes

What was different in our case was the brand new and bruising power of the conservative blogosphere, particularly the extremists among them. They formed a tightly knit community of keyboard assault artists who saw themselves as avenging angels of the right, determined to root out and decimate anything they believed to be disruptive to their worldview.

Dear Ms. Mapes:

I didn't even know the blogosphere existed when your TANG story broke, but I knew the very first time I saw your documents on my TV screen that there was something bogus about them. You see, I was a military spouse for almost 30 years, which included the timeframe covered by your story, and had seen hundreds of military/government documents. My suspicion drove me to look online to see what I could find out about what I saw as a HUGE descrepancy in your story and that's how this seasoned citizen found the blogging world.

It had nothing to do with avenging, I was not part of the "far right bully boys," (I didn't even know they existed) nor did I churn out "gigabytes of mind-numbing internet dissertations" about anything. However, the more I researched, the more I knew that I was right in my initial assessment of bogus. It is a shame you didn't talk to a few people who were actually in service in those years. You could have asked to see copies of any of their documents and compared the typeface, size, and style for yourself and you would have known immediately that you had a problem. You would also have been informed that the military, whether Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard or National Guard, would not put an unqualified person in the pilot's seat of a multi-million dollar jet. Common sense, if nothing else, should have told you that.

Ms. Mapes, as far as I'm concerned you are a silly woman who sacrificed integrity for your own left wing hatred and bias. You were aided in this by your boss's lack of integrity and bias and virulent hatred of the Bush family. You broke the rules and, like children, you lied to get out of your troubles. The fact that the public caught you and called you on those lies is just too bad. Smearing your audience of viewers shows how arrogant you were and was a very stupid thing to do then, as it is now. You could have easily covered yourself and your boss by admitting you were hoodwinked. I pity you for being so pathetic in your ongoing attempts to insist on perpetuating your lies. You remind me of my kids when they were little and trying to convince me they didn't do something that the evidence clearly indicated they did. But, unlike you, my kids fessed up once they knew the jig was up.

A concerned citizen,

Sara

Nicely said TS.

Killing them with kindness isn't working.  Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.

It was all FOX

"[A]t 75 years old, Rather still has more reportorial testosterone than the entire employee roster at FOX News".

The evil-doers are around every corner, and out to get her. Bloggers; right-wingers; pajama-clad coffee-drinking nitwits at their Giga-byte producing keyboards; and of course, FOX news, that hot-bed of lying SOBs.

You were exposed, Mary, you and Dan the Man. And you couldn't control this uncontrollable media. BTW, as you bitch about the curl at the end of the "a," the dip on the top of the "t," the spacing, the superscript, which typewriters were used in the military in 1972, I notice you don't contradict anything that was discovered. Kinda telling, isn't it?

Mary is out of her league, here. When confronted with ordinary citizens that have a higher intelligence than she has, she doesn't know how to take it. This must be really, really infuriating for people like her. I love it.

Friendly advice

Mark, don't put it nicely.  Mapes was caught dead to rights and needs to be called what she is.

THE QUESTION

Beyond the forged documents is another aspect of the Rather-gate scandal that MSM interviewers seem releuctant to ask about:

Three days prior to the braodcast of the bougs story, Mapes' staff contacted the Democratic National Committee to alert them that the story was going to break.

Now, in objective journalism, the investigators gather facts,  and interview BOTH sides of the story for more details and their reactions and responses to the questions raised.  Certainly, a sitting US President deserves this standard courtesy that Mapes and Rather would extend to a convicted murderer or tin-pot dictator.

But no, they withheld the story from the Bush White House, and went to his political opponent with the information.  This wasn't an error of omission; it was a deliberate decision to prevent Bush from answering to the charges while giving Kerry and the DNC several days to prepare and time an coincident attack.  Since the Dems had nothing to do with the story, what other reason could there possibly be for calling them?

QUESTION TO RATHER OR MAPES:  How do you explain this sequence of events as anything but a political ambush several weeks before a Presidential election?

Would Larry "The Cadaver" King or Oprah "The O" Winfrey ever have the guts to ask this question?  Better yet, would they ever ask it and force Rather and Mapes to give an answer?

Not a chance.

Wow... I just got down to

Wow...

I just got down to here this evening.

I see her and Danny Boy are on the same buddy-plan of defense....

Anybody but me....waaaaah...it is all that big bad Bush and the vast right wing conspiracy that did us in.

My Gawd....enough already.

These twin twits did their ownselves in and got caught at it....the liars trying to undermine an election.

Too bad so sad...lucky you both didn't get prosecuted.

Shut the heck up you leftist liars, now you are the only two who believe each other anymore...that is it....you two and a handful of leftist bloggers who are also insane.
