Somebody arrest the CEO of Bank of America. The knave is forcing poor Amy Robach to use his bank's ATM machines. At least, so it would seem from Amy's statement on this morning's "Today."
The NBC show ran a segment this morning about the fact that BoA has raised its ATM fees for non-customers to $3. When things were kicked back to co-anchor Robach in the studio, she unloaded.
View video here.
AMY ROBACH: It is an outrage! Three dollars, to take out twenty or forty bucks?
Co-anchor Lester Holt sympathized.
LESTER HOLT: And I get it, it's for non-customers. But for example, here in New York I use my home bank ATMs, but you travel, and you go to some place, and you have to use another bank. Three dollars seems a little excessive to get your money.
Great points, Amy and Lester. An outrage! Excessive! Why doesn't Hillary propose some kind of government commission to set a "fair" price?
But why stop with ATM fees? Amy, on next week's show, why not catalogue all your expenses from the past year? If a $3 ATM fee is an outrage, why, $299 for a pair of shoes or 600 clams for a meal for four at some frou-frou French restaurant sound like nothing short of felonies to me!

No is forced to use an ATM,
September 15, 2007 - 06:54 ET by motherbeltNo is forced to use an ATM, ever. And if you do decide to use one, you have the option to look for one of your own bank's....
When you travel, you consider it an expense of convenience to use another bank's ATM. Whats the big deal?
And anyone with any brains that only has a competitor's ATM to use and needs cash on a regular basis would take out enough cash for the whole week...not just $20 or $40.
BTW, wasn't it proposed at one time already, to limit the fee that banks can charge for non-customer ATM use?
An outrage?
September 15, 2007 - 07:05 ET by DontFeedTheTrollsAn outrage? I'll give you an outrage. I have to'give' my local school district $6000 dollars a year (if I don't pay up, they will take my house), and I don't even have any children in school!! That's an outrage.
You won't see that on the news.

Also, where does the water department get off charging us 2x for sewage what we pay for actual water? How the heck do they know where the water is going? Could be on my lawn. Could be I'm filling tanker trucks and carrying it to another state ... It's NOT all flush and drain ...

What an absolute idiot.
September 15, 2007 - 07:34 ET by mikejWhat an absolute idiot. Is Amy not old enough to remember a time where there were no ATM's and people actually had to go to a bank branch and withdraw money? Plus, not to mention, I must have missed the part where she is forced to use an ATM, and not just any ATM, but BofA's ATM machine.

September 15, 2007 - 08:26 ET by sarcasmoAnd the variety of brands tells me that the business is plenty competitive already. These recycled ATM fee-outrage stories seem like dead-air filler to me. IMO it's really just the same faked-outrage story about the same fees imposed on a wealthy news-anchor they've always run since the very birth of ATMs. They're just combined with the effects of inflation and economic illiteracy these days.
But, like the new poster above, I've always considered ATM fees an excuse to get a drink or a bite to eat. It worries me that so-few journalists seem to know even the basics of economics 101, but with public schools teaching most of 'em, I'm not surprised...

Money making doesn't take much education any longer. Instead of using tax money, close all the public schools and let individuals who need them hire baby-sitters with their own money. Baby-sitters are what our public schools have become anyway.

It will be tough making money off them because they seem to be of the mindset that everything should be free ...
Next Roback and her buddies will probably have a hissy over "check-cashing stores"...why should they charge a percentage of the check in service fees? Why should they charge you to give you money that's rightfully yours? The money that they need to rent the property where their "store" is, and to keep cash on hand to cash those checks just falls out of the trees, right?
Fees:
September 15, 2007 - 09:26 ET by Conservative_in_mass.Ok now the lib tards are pissed about fees. So am I. But, unlike in the private sector where I can CHOOSE to go elsewhere to avoid fees, I cannot avoid the fees the PUBLIC sector imposes on me:
My business license fee
my fire district fee
my real estate transfer fee
my real estate filing fee
my marriage license fee
my recyle disposal fee
my registration fee
my automobile inspection fee
my school district athletics/activity fee (I have no kids)
my school bus surcharge fee (again, no kids)
The former Senate president of the Mass Legislature Billy Bulger used to brag that, while you couldn't always sneak a tax increase past the public, he had the ability to slap a fee on a galloping horse.
So Amy, you dim bulb, if you want to get rid of the dreaded "fee" (in government speak its a tax) I'm all for it. So what do ya think AMY? <chirp chirp>

September 15, 2007 - 10:03 ET by dmntd1Not too seriously I'm sorry to say... I just closed out a checking account with a bank I've been with since I was 18 because their service went so far down the tubes they had to start charging me fees (finally got most of them refunded). They started losing deposits, and crediting them to my accounts a week+ later while not telling me that I was racking up SERIOUS NSF fees.
I finally found a small town bank that I could trust, and I hope they don't get bought out anytime soon. It's hard to find a good bank these days.

Dear Amy Robach
September 15, 2007 - 11:54 ET by Lame CherryDear Amy Robach,
I realize as a liberal you have only programming to make your brain function and are void of a Conservative gentleman to help you along the financial way in your Affirmaive Action job. In that light, I will offer you some sound tips to assist you which are in part what Ben Stein accomplishes daily as many other Conservatives do with a few of my own financial helps.
First Amy, you need to find your bank. It is a building where the billing address on the envelopes you receive your statments from. It will have BANK on the outside so this should help you. If not hire a cab and give them the address and take special note as you ride along the route to your bank.
Second, park in a well lit area so you will not be mugged.
Third, enter your bank. There will be tellers there (people behind the counter). You walk up to them with your checking account book or savings account book with your identification. This is a driver's license.
Fourth, you smile and present them your book and if they ask for ID you present that too and say, "I would like to withdraw $100 in four 20's and two 10's". The teller will handle all of this and you will have to subtract the 100 which is easy from your balance in your checking account.
Fifth, put the money into your purse and walk to your car being aware no one is going to mug you and drive home.
Sixth, at home you put all except twenty dollars into a safe place you will remember and the $20 you keep in your purse for the small things you need until it is gone and then you replenish it from your cash stash.
Seventh, you repeat this weekly taking less or more from your bank as you find what you need.
Eighth, is a bit more difficult and if you need a Conservative gentleman, find one and they will assist you.
For your non business and household expenses which are not tax deductable use your bank's debit card. This means things like groceries and gas.
For your monthly bills auto electronic pay them. This would be electric, cell phone, rent etc... Making certain you check those bills for mistakes monthly.
For business expenses which are tax deductable like your pretty clothes, travel expenses associated with business etc... you get a credit card like American Express Blue or Discover with cash back programs. (Do not use Chase or other BoA cards as they seem to be Rockefeller controlled and intent on destroying America.)
For all other shopping to keep things simply you just keep one other credit card in a Visa or Mastercard as they are most readily accepted any where.
In this way dear Amy each month you will only get 4 bills in your mail which you will promptly pay in full and not have any interest rates. Your bank (remember the brick building which had tellers) will probably even give you a binder with monthly sections in it to keep all your bills in order, so when you pay your IRS taxes it will be easy to sort through them and itemize the accounts.
I sincerely hope this helps and do not feel bad about being ignorant of finances as most of us were not born Milton Friendman or Ben Stein.......but some of us actually took the time to read their writings instead of talking on our cell phones for 6 hours a day.
God bless your financial learning Amy.

$3.00 convenience charge for access to $20.00...that's 15%. No doubt she thinks 15% tax on capital gains is an inadequate "convenience" charge. I doubt she complains too much when her agent takes his 15%...or when the government bleeds ordinary citizens of their hard-earned employment income.
