Flip-Flop: Matthews Now Says Discussing National Security Not Petraeus's Job

It's a flip-flop that would be the envy of John Kerry in good windsurfing weather off Nantucket. For the last two days, Chris Matthews had been excoriating General David Petraeus for his reluctance to opine on the effect of the Iraq war on America's safety at home. Suddenly this morning, Matthews has decided that -- guess what? -- it's not Petraeus's job to make pronouncements of that sort.

As I described here, it began on "Hardball" two nights ago, with this Matthews diatribe against Petraues for his reluctance to answer the question from Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) as to the implications of the Iraq war for Americans' safety at home:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: He couldn't say whether what we're doing in Iraq makes America safer or not. He couldn't say whether the lost lives, the misery, the hundreds of billions of dollars being spent are worth the effort in terms of our national security.
...

This must be a first, an American field commander who can't say whether the sacrifices he's asking of his troops every day and night are worth it to their country. Did General Washington not know the answer in the American Revolution? Did General Eisenhower not know the answer in World War II? What are we doing in Iraq if the very man commanding the war doesn't know if it's doing us any good in terms of our national security? This is the real news of the [pronounced with contempt] so-called Petraeus Report. The general who won't tell how long it will take us to achieve the mission in Iraq can't tell us whether achieving that mission -- should it ever be achieved -- is worth it.

The tirade continued on last evening's "Hardball," Matthews going so far, as I described here, as to belittle Petraeus as a ventiloquist's dummy.

But appearing on today's "Morning Joe" at 7:35 A.M. EDT, Matthews had a sudden change of heart.

CHRIS MATTHEWS: It's President Bush that brought a non-political person, a serving field commander, into politics* by asking him to defend the policy, which is in fact the president's policy. It's not the policy of people who have sworn to serve the country, it's the policy of the president, to fight this war. And I think that came to a head when Warner asked him that question, "is this making us safer at home?" And he really didn't want to answer that question. Because that's not a question for a military officer, that's a question for the president.

So what explains Matthews' stunning about-face? I'm guessing he figured out that it wasn't good politics for him to denigrate a dedicated, accomplished member of our military. Chris realized he had to keep his eyes on the prize: bashing President Bush.

Will anyone else in the media call Chris on his flip-flop?

*NOTE: The General was testifying not at the president's behest but pursuant to congressional mandate.

The Supplemental budget bill passed by congress reads:

Prior to the submission of the President's second report on September 15, 2007, and at a time to be agreed upon by the leadership of Congress and the Administration, the United States Ambassador to Iraq and the Commander, Multi-National Forces Iraq, will be made available to testify in open and closed session before the relevant committees of the Congress.”

Chris, like all his friends

Chris, like all his friends in the MSM, will only emphasize a point that will further advance his own storyline, namely that the Iraq war was a mistake, is not making the USA any safer and should be ended yesterday. This is why he lifted this single line by the general out a broader statement.

Chris backtracks

Chris was either told by the dem party or figured it out himself that bashing a 4 star general would not help the dem presidential candidates who want to be commander-in-chief of the armed forces. It's a matter of time before the dem candidates start back-tracking too.

Demo slogan?

Believer

IT'S THE MISSION STUPID!

Orwellian "Newspeak"

A quick search of the web under “coming war with Iran” will bring up a plethora of articles predicting that the “reckless” administration is preparing a “disastrous” war with Iran.  Most all of them predict that this attack is imminent.  Only trouble is, these so-called scholars have been making these dire predictions for going on five years now.  Most all of these “prediction” claim that any such war will result in 10’s of thousands of U.S. casualties, the destruction of the American Army etc. etc. blah blah blah. We’ve heard it all before.  These are all just faint echoes of the predictions of the “disastrous” result that was predicted if we invaded Iraq.  Go back and check for yourself.  They were wrong then why should any reasonable person think they would be right this time?  Isn’t the definition of insanity doing the same stupid thing over and over and expecting a different result?

So here we are 4 years into the conflict in Iraq and U.S. fatal casualties are still below 4000, and if we were to consider only combat casualties it is lower still.  Has everything in Iraq gone well, have mistakes been made?  By their very nature, wars are messy things and they never go according to plan.  But all in all the predictions of massive casualty rates, Israel being dragged into the conflict and a wider war have all proven false.

Even before General Petraeus’ report the signs of the troop surge making real progress were so visible that even the New York Times and the alphabet networks had to acknowledge it.  Nothing could have made the “surrender now” crowd in Congress know as the Democrat Party any more incensed.  Desperate to turn Iraq into a repeat of their delusional political “victory” in the Vietnam war, the knives came out.  Unable to deny the real progress being made, the liberals in Congress turned to personal attacks on the man whom they unanimously praised in confirming his promotion to senior field commander in Iraq, now all but calling him a liar and accusing him of being nothing more than a shill for the President’s policy.

The Democrats have become the source of modern day Orwellian “newspeak.” Never mind what I said yesterday or the day before its only today’s version of “truth” you need concern yourself with.  Never mind that during the 2004 election cycle it was “there can never be political solution in Iraq (i.e. elections), with out a military one.”  Well now there have been successful elections in Iraq, three of them.   So the party line now changes to “there can never be military solution in Iraq, with out a political one.”

I only wish the General had had the gumption to quote Joseph Welsh’s response to Joe McCarthy.  “Have you no sense of decency?  Have you no shame?”  To which I would have added “Well maybe not you Senator Clinton but how about the rest of you?”

Haters Unite!

The President's speech tonight will be covered on MSNBC by the truly fair and balanced team of Matthews and Olbermann.  I'm guessing they've already written their responses.

That's the great thing about

That's the great thing about being a liberal in the media: you get to change your mind without repercussion. You can always say "that explanation is no longer operable."

"Clearly, someone from the Hillary's office called him up and said "are you kidding me?"

Hold on, now

It's appropriate today to remember what Rabin said: "You don't make peace with friends. You make it with very unsavory enemies." If Matthews is starting to come around, maybe American national reconciliation is somehow possible. Like Crocker's testimony, we need to encourage the current trajectory (i.e., as of today) .

Frankly,

I don't give a damn what Matthews says.  He's a liar:

"President Bush...brought a non-political person into politics by asking him to defend the policy"

This is what is known as a lie.  Bush did not ask Petraeus to defend the policy, but to report on the progress of the mission the policy indicates.

The only question remaining is whether or not Matthews knows he's lying, or if he's just an idiot.

I vote idiot.  But you can

I vote idiot.  But you can still call him a lying idiot.  The real question though which one is a bigger lying idiot, Matthews or Olberman.

Screw diversity, celebrate competancy

disappointing Chris Matthews

Yes, yes. We appreciate all you did for our side. If it was up to me, I'd let it slide. But the sign 'No Irish Need Apply' means you, Chris. And alcohol is not permitted here, even if you 'bring your own.' - - Gatekeeper at Islamofacist heaven sometime in the future disappointing Chris Matthews
