On November 17, 2005, Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Pa.), who had previously supported the Iraq war, announced his call for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. The story led all three broadcast network evening news reports.
A mirror-image shift of position was reported today: a previously anti-war Dem has announced, after a visit to Iraq, that he now opposes withdrawal at this time. Will the MSM give anything like equal time to the story?
Rep. Brian Baird (D-Wa.) is a five-term member of Congress, representing Washington's 3rd District. Baird voted against the initial resolution authorizing the war. But now, having recently returned from Iraq, he has another perspective on events there, telling his hometown newspaper, the Olympian, as reported in this article, the following, :
We're on the ground now. We have a responsibility to the Iraqi people and a strategic interest in making this work.I think we're making real progress.
I think the consequences of pulling back precipitously would be potentially catastrophic for the Iraqi people themselves, to whom we have a tremendous responsibility … and in the long run chaotic for the region as a whole and for our own security.
As I write this, we're a bit less than two hours away from the evening network newscasts. Stay tuned for lead-story coverage on ABC, NBC and CBS. Or not.

Unfortunately for this country and our great military and the progress by the Iraqi's.
Just as an aside I was wondering if anyone heard C-Span and Gen Mixon today on The Washington Journal...it was great IMHO...(for those that do not know you can get the show hour by hour if intersted at this link)
Also I heard on Rush today the polls from Bill Schneider today to defeat any good progress before the Petraeus Report comes out in Sept.
Seems the leftists are getting their battle plans ready...just some of them do not know which way to go though...
It would be funny if it weren't so despicably sad during a time of war...plus treasonous all for political gain as far as I am concerned at the expense and lives of others.

Blaster = Disaster Of Truth
August 18, 2007 - 00:21 ET by stratmanIn the White House Press Briefing page you link, the word "liberation" is used once on the page, 4th sentence, 1st paragraph:
The word "liberation" is all lower case, ie the first letter is not capitalized, meaning that "liberation" is NOT part of a title or name. As written, " Operation Iraqi liberation" denotes liberation during/due to "Operation Iraqi".
Maybe the transcript was modified. Maybe Fleischer jumbled the title of the operation. Maybe his mind was working faster than his mouth and he contracted the operation name and some other grammar.
No matter what explanation you chose, the title of the military operation was and is "Operation Iraqi Freedom." Blaster is a classic example of GIGO - Garbage In, Garbage Out. As long as he relies on politically biased websites for his information, particularly when they do not reference the actual data, Blaster will be frequently wrong again.

August 17, 2007 - 20:34 ET by nkviking75I hate to rely on Wikipedia, but I think we can trust their article on the district. They say Democrats dominated the district from 1960 on, except for two terms by Republican Linda Smith who came to power with the GOP sweep in '94. Baird is her immediate successor.

Most of Western Washington votes overwhelmingly Dem.

August 17, 2007 - 20:42 ET by bigtimerHey thanks to both of you... I now have a much better idea exactly where this is...
Plus viking I do not know if you ever saw my posts long ago about Linda Smith and how furious I was with Newt for pulling his support plus $$$ from her (he did the same to one of our congressmen/women in Idaho too, can't remember if it was Chenowith or who now)...she was one of my fav's way back when, she almost had that won...a real conservative with great values, now I know who replaced her, I probably did back then too but forgot the name as it has been a long time now.
Anyway, there is a lot I liked about Newt, still do in some regards but the bad for me outweighed the good when it came to the power that went to his head and his stategies at the time.
That's my rant for now.

Or...if he really is thinking hard and support the war effort, he needs to convince first his district and then his fellow democracks. But I doubt it, democracks had already made up their minds. Prove me wrong, congressman...
This is Baird's 2nd reversal on this issue in four months.
August 17, 2007 - 22:41 ET by Howard_BealeI think it's worth noting that this is Baird's second reversal on this issue in less than four months.
Before
late April '07, Baird had opposed withdrawing troops for well over a year,
going back as least as far as Murtha's November 2005 resolution.
Baird does about-face on Iraq withdrawal
Although he opposed the 2002 resolution authorizing the war and last
fall called attacking Iraq "one of the dumbest ideas in American
history," Baird resisted early Democratic calls for withdrawal.
In
November 2005, hawkish Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., introduced a resolution
calling for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. Baird called Murtha's
timing "unfortunate" and said a pullout would jeopardize Iraqis who
supported American-backed elections set for the following month.

This story is still being
August 17, 2007 - 22:52 ET by Del DolemonteThis story is still being ignored by the national press. However, here's what a liberal northwest blogger had to say:
"If you like politicians who refuse to engage in group-think, who work hard and try to get the best information they can, you kind of have to hear them out even if they are telling you something you don't want to hear. From The Columbian:
The article also says Baird is now against partitioning Iraq due to to what people there have told him. He also cites concerns about Iranian influence as a justification for not leaving "prematurely," which as we all know is a rather vague time frame. I always wonder how many F.U.'s (Friedman Units) it is.
If you read the full article, you could come to the conclusion that Baird was heavily influenced by his Republican traveling partners and the U.S. military. But Baird has been to the region several times that I know of, so I don't think he's some babe in the woods. He may not be considered a foreign policy heavyweight, but I recall that during the Balkans conflict he knew the details and was pretty familiar with the history of post-war Europe, so I like to think he has applied the same diligence when it comes to Iraq.
That being said, I think it's fair for progressives to question a strategy with such vague goals. The irony is that we'll wind up backing the Sunnis. You know, Saddam's folks.
I don't think I've ever truly envisioned a "quick" departure from Iraq anyhow. The quibble I have with Baird over this is that it lends cover to the administration, which clearly has no interest in ever leaving Iraq. That may be a horrible, cynical political calculation on my part, but it's a horrible, cynical political system that got us into this mess in the first place. But I can respect Baird for attempting to digest the facts as best he is able, given constraints on the ground and such.
What we still haven't done in the United States is actually decide that we need to start finding ways to actually leave Iraq. It could take a year, but each time it gets pushed back another F.U. we're taking hundreds more casualties. The worst bombing of the entire war just happened the other day, if anyone actually notices the poor Iraqi civilians any more.
It's worth noting that Baird still brings extra credibility to the table, at least in my view, because he voted against the initial invasion of Iraq. I would urge my fellow progressives to at least consider what he is saying. We may not agree with all of it, but Baird has no obvious political motivation to say these things, as no challenger of any note has emerged for 2008.
So while we may find Baird's comments kind of frustrating in the context of domestic U.S. politics, the important thing is that we act in our national interest. Some of us may have differing views on how that works, but that's democracy."

This is also great information to read.
Seems the lib's do not quite know which way to go quite yet full force...most likely going to do this regionally IMHO.

Plus we do not know yet if we will have anyone to go against him.
Once again thank you.
lock and load
August 18, 2007 - 00:35 ET by RiharThis article gave me a chance to use some of the news articles I've been saving regarding the Iraq war. As I looked through the comments section of the article my head spun with the typical liberal tag lines. I dug through my archive of news articles and shot down a few of their talking points (read: fibs). I've been waiting for a chance to do that... felt good.
When a liberal speaks, the truth is busy elsewhere.
