Is it just me, or did the New York Times just drop a bombshell?
By the headline of its editorial this morning, Wrong Way Out of Iraq, and its introductory paragraphs -- about how the British model of withdrawing to bases in Basra hasn't worked, I was sure we were headed for a demand for total, rapid withdrawal. When suddenly came this conclusion:
The United States cannot walk away from the new international terrorist front it created in Iraq. It will need to keep sufficient forces and staging points in the region to strike effectively against terrorist sanctuaries there or a Qaeda bid to hijack control of a strife-torn Iraq.
Whoah! Whether in connivance with the campaigns of the Dem candidates, or on its own initiative, the Times has clearly provided cover on the left for Hillary, Obama et al. to back away from their defeatist positions. There is some ambiguity in the Times position. Is it saying that the U.S. should pull all forces out but stage them over the horizon -- the good old Murtha Okinawa Gambit? Does the Times really care about fighting terrorists, or has it realized that the Dem candidate can't win in '08 by running on a platform of unconditional surrender?

I'm gonna go with the latter.
How nice of the Times to take up the issue for the Dems...not only paving the way for them to reverse their stance, but covering themselves for applauding them for doing it.
Agreed
August 13, 2007 - 09:29 ET by KC MulvillePerhaps Obama's recent foot-shootings have sparked a recognition that you can't be so cavalier with foreign policy. Maybe the candidates, trying to look more intelligent about foreign policy, have finally done some research and discovered that it isn't as easy as they thought it was. But more likely, they're just squawking platitudes, without understanding what they're actually saying.
I really agree with
August 13, 2007 - 09:36 ET by HelenSI really agree with MidAmerica below that they're realizing that President Bush won't pull out on their demand and they won't be able to pin a loss on him. It would come back and haunt them. So they're having to frantically try to grow a back-bone of their own.
They're going to try to arrive at voting day with a "record" of "staying the course" in Iraq as if it was their position all along (but they'll have to confirm that with the New York Times, of course).

August 13, 2007 - 06:32 ET by rob6677As time marches closer to Nov 08 they have planned to create the usual ambiguous platform, both getting the far left to their cause early on and trying to get swing votes by "supporting" conservative causes as the vote approaches.
They won't offend the far left because those types have an understanding of "get the votes no matter how", so those propagandists will still fall in line and salute. It's funny how they hate the military but yet operate like an army, of course their's just needs a stiff legged march and some funny mustaches!(that will come if they win) :{)

Sen Clinton is flip-flopping in the WP as well, claiming in a speech that she would leave troops in Iraq.
How will this attitude affect the leftist kooks as well as those up in 08?

I always have the right idea, just can't express it clearly!!!
August 14, 2007 - 00:20 ET by rob6677What I meant was that the far left operates in the same manner as MSM and Hillary etc. in that they say and do whatever is needed to get more votes while hiding their true motives. That is why they flip flop all over the place especially in regards to Iraq.
So because the far left already understands that, the Dem candidates don't have to worry about those votes. They only need to change their view long enough to get the undecided voters. Of course they just don't see that it doesn't work (John Kerry).

August 13, 2007 - 07:20 ET by niner-four-whiskeyThe dems. Bluster and fuss, FUD, FUD, FUD. (Fear, uncertainity, doubt).
But in reality, they know we gotta do what we gotta do. They know that everyone on earth was pretty sure Saddam had the bad bugs and the chemical juice and probably some kind of nuke stuff that might be revived, sold or otherwise become a threat.
They know that surveillance is necessary in some circumstances to uncover the schemes of those who would bomb us, hijack our planes and murder innocent people.
They know Iran is a serious threat and is responsible for the deaths of Americans in Iraq and in other places.
They know all this.
And they have no problem whatsoever turning all of this around for political rhetoric, compromising our security and giving our enemies cause for hope that plinking away on our troops a few at a time will wear us down.
But hey, it's election season, ain't it?

August 13, 2007 - 08:04 ET by dscottnew international terrorist front it created in Iraq
Big time back pedaling. The NYT is trying to create the idea that terrorism has just recently coalesced in Iraq and now we are stuck having to fight it there. Now Iraq is in the GWOT! Only the dolts on the far left will gobble that line/lie. What the NYT is really afraid of is the bloodbath if we pull out, they know they can't ignore it or control the information flow anymore to the public like they and the rest of their buddies in the MSM. They will be held responsible for all loss of life in Iraq if they were successful in getting the pull out. Now that the Surge is successful, if they continue to push the pullout they come off as weak leaders.
Iraq has been the front line of the GWOT and as a result we invaded, just like Afghanistan, no different. Whether it is the Taliban or Saddam as head of the government, any government that sponsors terrorism is in our cross hairs, Bush warned the world after 911. Saddam foolishly thought the US was going to remain feckless because of Clinton and Carter's demonstrated incompetence in world affairs, he found out the hard way. If Iran keeps up the nonsense, they're next.

And the Democrat candidates
August 13, 2007 - 08:20 ET by motherbeltAnd the Democrat candidates will preface their "about-face" comments with "I have always said...." or "I have always believed...." and no one in the MSM will say "No, you didn't." They will let them go on as if they always held the principles they are now espousing.
The media and dems
August 13, 2007 - 08:08 ET by MidAmericaThe media and dems pushed hard to get President Bush to retreat on his watch so it would be his defeat. However he has run the clock out on them and now the next president will have to take responsibility. They are probably realizing they will have to deal with bigger issues than what kind of oil our french fries are cooked in and whether runway models are too skinny.
And once again, in the nick
August 13, 2007 - 09:07 ET by HelenSAnd once again, in the nick of time, the New York Times has told the Dems their position on an issue! Phew!
Imagine if they had had to continue to flounder around trying to figure out what they believe!?
They can breathe easy and sleep well knowing that this pesky issue won't be so awkward any more.

Let's not lose sight
August 13, 2007 - 10:08 ET by Reality CheckI am also frustrated that the Democrats are getting a pass on this flip-flop from the media, but let's not forget the big picture.
We've been saying for months that it isn't an option to just walk away. Now, the Democrats and the press seem to agree. That's good. A withdrawal would have been disastrous. It's looking more and more like a withdrawal won't happen.
This also means that the Democrats don't think 'bring 'em home now' is the key to the White House. Even they don't believe the 'antiwar sentiment' is that pervasive. And they're trying to win a liberal primary!
More of my thoughts are here.
Reality Check
I'm hoping the Dem primary
August 13, 2007 - 10:44 ET by dscottI'm hoping the Dem primary is so locked up with liberal left loons that Bill Richardson will get the nomination. Then we will have a replay of George McGovern. That would be sweet! The problem for the Dems at this point is momentum, it's all pushing toward the ultra left loons in their primaries. It's called poetic justice, the loons created a divisive political environment that is so corrosive that Hillary will dissolve in the primaries leaving either Richardson or Obama as the purest socialist candidate acceptable to the loons. I believe we can count on the lib Dem primaries to essentially wash out Hillary. Remember, rank and file blue collar Dems usually don't turn out in great numbers during the primaries, the loons do. This is how the loons captured the Dem party, they showed up and made the decisions and then the blue collar Dems were left with the unpalatable choice during the general election of holding their nose to vote loon Dem or Conserv. Repub. The question is how many rational Dems will switch to independent like Lieberman after losing in a stacked primary race to run in the general election. Lieberman has shown the way for the rational Dems to break the stranglehold of the loons on the party.

Worthless rag!
August 13, 2007 - 10:54 ET by MightyMouthI was thinking the same thing. And of course the dems will be the ones to come in and "save the day" in Iraq with a "bold new strategy" once they attain the White House. Just like a get "rich quick scheme" you won't know the details until you send in your money.

It will be interesting
August 13, 2007 - 11:03 ET by MidAmericaIt will be interesting to see how the dems handle this dilemma. They can't call for a 'Bush-Lite' action in Iraq. Bush was already doing that and things weren't going so well. That's why we now see the Surge and finally some military progress. Anything less than all the force necessary to win will not succeed. The next President will have to wage war to win or surrender.
These people don't do or say anything without polls. I just wonder what polls have been stamped 'Top Secret' and are being stashed away in a vault somewhere. Maybe the NYT can find a leaker and they can expose it 'because the public has a right to know'.
NYT turns neocon?
August 13, 2007 - 11:19 ET by Dee Bunk"The United States cannot walk away from the new international terrorist front it created in Iraq. It will need to keep sufficient forces and staging points in the region to strike effectively against terrorist sanctuaries there or a Qaeda bid to hijack control of a strife-torn Iraq."
Hum - isn't this what neocons and conservatives have pretty much been saying all along? They refer to a "new international terrorist front", isn't that a good thing - to have somewhere where you can confront them? Or is the NYT saying they prefer that we would have allowed them to have sanctuary where we can't fight them and only they can attack us? Is it better to have them lurking unfettered in the background?
Will the republicans finally speak up?
August 13, 2007 - 14:13 ET by Dave RSince last November, the dims and their liberal MSM dogwashers have been falling all over themselves, lying to both themselves and to us, telling us that the dims slim congressional majority was a mandate for pulling out of Iraq immediately.
Now that it appears that we may actually prevail there, they are running for the tall grass, with no shortage of cover being provided by the NYT and the rest of the MSM.
My question is this: Are the spineless republicans going to remain as silent about this as they have been in regards to most of the other defeat and retreat moves the dims have been making, thereby letting the dims get away with it yet again?
I'm guessing they will.
Truth has been out 2 Months..........

Are we really THAT stupid?
August 13, 2007 - 20:57 ET by w0tmIs the majority of the electorate THAT stupid? Are their memories so short that ANYTHING can be said at any time with no adverse reaction right up to Election Day? Can politicians, if backed by the media, do a complete reversal on any issue, at any time, while NO ONE remembers what their prior "core beliefs" were yesterday; much less last week or last month? Can "1984" be dropped into 2007 and no one notice? Yes, yes, yes and yes!
The Hillary/Barak ticket will go into the history books as being the last administration of the world's greatest experiment with democracy. Every administration yearns for a legacy. That they destroyed our country will be their legacy although they will forever wish it otherwise. "The Law of Unintended Consequences" is NEVER wrong but often denied.
What comes after Hillary/Barak? I fear nothing. Yet again, "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." That it's hundreds of millions of people doesn't make it right. Numbers just leave a deeper crater.
Al Qaeda Buys New York Times - Readers Fail to Notice
August 13, 2007 - 21:46 ET by w0tmWith all the recent media mergers and buy-outs, this particular buy-out was somehow overlooked. News headline out here in Kansas this morning: "Al Qaeda Buys NY Times". Did you all miss it? Hmmm. Guess it didn't make the editor cuts in all your Blue State newspapers. According to the article, the DNC is already complaining about the news reporting and op-ed tilt to the right they claim has happened. Their complaints were quickly dismissed out of hand as ridiculous by newly appointed publisher Mohammed "Dust" Bin. The "new NY Times" also issued a press release pledging to "continue our strict policy and stellar record of reporting the complete facts without personal comment or spin. We'll continue to let our readers make up their own minds. We've always treated our intelligent and educated readers with the respect they deserve. That will not change."
The DNC, after counting 29 "hit pieces" on (D) politicians just on page one of yesterday's edition while the only appearance of George Bush was a photo-op session with GW and God hugging and shaking hands on the White House lawn, was having none of it. They immediately pledged their allegiance to Fox News to "bring back balance to our nation's cherished, impartial media".
