This morning, some 30 people were arrested in New Jersey, the fruit of a two-year federal investigation into a international money laundering scandal. Among those arrested were Democratic Mayors Peter Cammarano III (Hoboken) and Dennis Elwell (Secaucus), as well as Democratic deputy mayor of Jersey City Leona Beldini and Republican state Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt.
But if you only got your news of this mass arrest from the Associated Press, you would not learn the party affiliation of these politicians. To their credit, other news outlets readily accessible to New Jerseyans such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal noted the party affiliations of these allegedly crooked pols.
Indeed, the party association of each politician is no secret, especially Mayor Cammarano, elected June 9 and sworn in on July 1.
More local papers reported on the scandal but NBC New York detailed no party affiliation from any of the politicians while NJ.com only reported the political denomination of the Republican politician involved.
So why are some media outlets leaving out the party affiliation?
Could it be because in order to tell the story, reporters must admit that not just one or two, but at least three Democrats were stung in this federal money laundering bust, in the middle of a gubernatorial election year where incumbent liberal Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine is already hurting in the polls?

Scandalous. Not only do
July 23, 2009 - 17:35 ET by JerryScandalous. Not only do they not mention the (D) affiliations, but they put the (R) FIRST, so if you are scanning the story, you are left with a bitter aroma of Republican corruption.
The MSM (D) is absolutely reprehensible.

Ha! In the Open Thread
July 23, 2009 - 12:20 ET by Chris NormanHa! In the Open Thread section, "easygoer" mentioned this story and said there were two Democrat mayors and one Republican assemblyman involved. In my reply at 12:29 PM ET, I asked, "Guess who's the only one who will be identified by party affiliation?" Now, these biased practices don't even have to be reported here for us to know they have already been used.

July 23, 2009 - 14:27 ET by blazermaniacI actually saw the report on the net. Of course, Contessa Brewer didn't mention any party affiliation. What a shock. Typical lying DEMOCRATS!

July 23, 2009 - 13:40 ET by UtherpendBurn them all regardless of party affiliation. In fact the Republicans of the area should hold the one Repub caught in more contempt for being part of a scheme that involved corrupt Democrats. It just goes to show that crooks are crooks regardless of political affiliation, he should be shunned like the plague.

It's almost ruefully humorous that, whether it be a vote on a liberal bill in Congress or as a participant in Red state scandal, there always seems to be at least one Republican involved to make it "bi-partisan".

If truth be known
July 23, 2009 - 14:26 ET by katiejanemost NJ people assume that corrupt politicians ARE Democrats unless the story specifically identifies them as Republicans.
In NJ identifying a corrupt politician as a Democrat would be considered redundant.
As another Garden Stater
July 23, 2009 - 17:12 ET by FastEdthis is the truth - if there is a corrupt pol, it must be a demolib - unfortunately, it's still joisey, all pols are the same, R or D. Just look at how we got lousenberg - the Torch got caught, the court said ok to short notification, don't worry about the law as written, we'll change it brom the bench, and we've got grandpa adult diaper. Manendez hangs with LaRaza, thinking they're a Hispanic rock band, and can't understand how people get upset at their policies of hispanics before any other!
So yeah, if a politicians affiliation is not mentioned by the NY, NJ or PA press, or even the national cowards, then it's a good bet he's a DEMOLIB. But, we do grow the best tomatos!

If these guys were all republicans, we would have known it right away. Because only one is a Republican they could not name the poitical affiliation without talking about the Democrats too.

Here in NJ I heard this story on the radio today. I flipped from ABC CBS WINS news to find out the party affiliation of these guys and heard nada. I ended up assuming all were Dems until I logged on to this site because of the MSM bias. I knew that if most of those arrested had been republicans the press would have been reporting their contacting Chris Christy the Rep. candidate running against the Dem Gov. Corzine and looking for HIS condemnation of the dirty politicians so they could smear him by associating him with the scandel. This is a common tactic used against Republicans: A) Report a confrontational statement or criminal act made by a republican B) Demand other Republicans condemn it or respond to it to tie them to the scandel C) Report how this scandel hurts those other Republicans D) Report how the scandel reflects poorly on the Party E) Report any other scandel in the last couple of years that a Republican was involved in and decry the lack of standards and/or intergrity of the Republicans F) Hammer the story day after day for a couple of weeks repeating a thru e. When Democrats are involved expect 1-2 days of coverage focused on the unfortunate nature of the scandel and how it does not reflect on honest Democratic elected officials and move on.
