Are you a conservative? Then you're a d***, and there's something wrong with your brain. At least that's what "24" actress and comedienne Janeane Garofalo believes.
According to the former Air America radio host, a conservative starts out an “a**hole,” and the politics come later. She asserted, “The reason a person is a conservative republican (sic) is because something is wrong with them...It really is neuroscience.”
In this February 12 interview with the environmentalist celebrity blog Ecorazzi, Garofalo also claimed the “irrational” emotion center of the brain, the limbic system, is what creates conservatives (text reformatted, profanity edited, all bold mine):
The reason a person is a conservative republican is because something is wrong with them. Again, that’s science – that’s neuroscience. You cannot be well adjusted, open-minded, pluralistic, enlightened and be a republican. It’s counter-intuitive. And they revel in their anti-intellectualism. They revel in their cruelty.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓
I don’t know if you heard me talking to Jenny a while ago, but I was saying that first you have to be an a**hole and then comes the conservatism. You gotta be a d*** to cleave onto their ideology...
Sarah Palin didn't escape Garofalo's ire either. She said Palin is "small-minded and mean-spirited" and “is what the Republican Party has become: obstructionist, contrarians, small-minded, all of these things (sic).”
Garofalo raved that "[t]here's definitely something wrong" with Palin, and she's successful with some Americans "because she represents that lesser segment of the country. It's about people's lesser nature...”
Ecorazzi then dangled some bait:
E: I think it’s safe to say [Palin's] done some pretty nutty things.
JG: It’s not even nutty. It really is neuroscience. I truly believe that it has something to do with their limbic brain. I really believe that some people’s limbic brain dominates more than others. Our limbic brain controls all our emotions and it causes us to be irrational. Our limbic brain goes into action when we’re ecstatic, frightened, when we’re having sex. I really believe that if a neuroscientist examined the brain of somebody who identified as a conservative, they would find it’s wired differently.
Maybe a 9/11 conspiracy theorist who is fond of angry, vitriolic outbursts should take a look at the limbic system in her own brain for the excessive emotion and fright that she attributes to the right.
Garofalo also attacked Republican beliefs from Ronald Reagan forward, railing, "Their policies have destroyed us and most of the world--that's a fact not an opinion." She was baffled that “conservative republicans” (sic) (her sneer quotes) are allowed to participate in politics, asking “why do they still get a say?”
That certainly isn't very inclusive. She also seemed a little confused about the difference between fact and opinion.
When discussing politics and neuroscience, perhaps Garofalo was referring to several questionable studies that tried to link political beliefs to the brain or childhood, or perhaps she was just projecting her own personal demons onto conservatives.
One thing is for sure—she didn't get the message from the left that we are all supposed to put politics aside and come together for the good of the country. How “obstructionist,” "contrarian[]” and “small-minded.

You must remember...
February 13, 2009 - 08:11 ET by JohnMcGrew...that like most "performers", she's in the "popularity" business. It's my belief that most "performers" espouse liberalism because it's easy; it demands little from them personally, and they can take "popular" and "inoffensive" positions on nearly anything.
Being a "conservative", on the other hand, demands that you actually understand what you are talking about. Unfortunately, most "performers" are unable to do this without writers.
John, I can understand
February 13, 2009 - 08:51 ET by SmartypantsJohn, I can understand performers taking the easy road and going with the crowd, but it does not explain such outlandish words and behavior from this woman. Why be so passionate about something she does not even understand? Most of Hollywood is liberal, that's true, but the fact remains that most of Hollywood still keeps its collective mouth shut about such matters. They at least realize they are not wise enough to spout off on things of which they know little about.

These artsy, anti-American films all tank at the box office and the last time they get any recognition is at their self-congratulatory awards shows each year in the spring. Look for "Frost" and "Milk" to battle it out for best picture, while movies like "Paul Blart" earn 4 times as much money in 1/2 the time and Kevin James won't even get a seat in the bottom part of the pavillion.

February 13, 2009 - 09:57 ET by SmartypantsYeah, I know she's an idiot, but yet this does not stop her from continually being given a public forum to spout utter nonsense. If one is a liberal, being stupid does not preclude them from being given a forum for their lunacy. Conservatives, however, have to be on top of their game all the time in order to gain and hold access to the public airwaves. This is the same reason that Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews are allowed to regularly spew garbage that nobody watches, yet their contracts are renewed. People like Sean Hannity, Limbaugh, even Bill O'Reilly, actually have to support their positions with facts and reason. If they did nothing more than shoot their mouths off like Olbermann, they would never survive.
"The race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but that's the way to bet."
Because she's not particularly bright.
February 14, 2009 - 07:17 ET by JohnMcGrewShe's just smart enough to know she's just a D-list entertainer, and in the grand scheme of human events that she doesn't really matter very much. This disappoints her and makes her feel inadequate, so like so many other entertainers, she forays into politics to feel socially relevant. Not being particularly bright or educated, she attaches something personally comfortable to her and easily understood; Liberalism.
Why is she so obnoxious and loud? Again, because she is not particularly talented or bright. She reminds me of the struggling comics I used to see at clubs in the ‘80s. The smart and funny ones didn’t have to yell or curse. But the lesser ones, when they’d run out of energy or material, would usually launch in to endless obscenity-laced tirades that were not particularly funny, and were actually tiresome.
In other words, she knows she’s not relevant, so she has to raise her voice to get any attention at all.

A liberal is a person with the portion of the brain set to Hyper-emotionalism switched on full blast. THis interferes with their ability to logically reason and thus are forced to appraoch everything from a hyper emotional state. Global warming, war, racism, etc is all emotionally driven.
A conservative is normal, as they think logically as well as emotionally.

But,
February 13, 2009 - 11:32 ET by UpNorthif they go to the right kind of store, they can use the food stamps like real money. The cashiers just look the other way, as the food stamp user buys cigs, liquor, and anything their little hearts desire. They get their change in real dollars so they can "stimulate" the economy of their crack dealers.
there's no trade-in needed here in CA
February 13, 2009 - 14:31 ET by UndercoverConservativeit's called EBT-Electronic Benefits Transfer. All cash aid and food stamp monies go to an atm-like card, so check cashing stores don't get a portion of the money. Of course, since the program funnels all this thru CitiCorp, *they* get a nice huge chunk of taxpayer money, since they "save" the recipient 2% of what the grocery stores or check cashers would charge.
The best part, is when they use it to buy groceries. Because of "privacy concerns" purchases are deliberately *not* tracked. Which means it's up to the checker whether or not to deny sales of alcohol (no need for liquor stores here in CA, the hard stuff's at Safeway or BevMo) or cigarettes/rolling papers or DVDs and candy from the impulse buy section. Got friends running the checkout? they'll let you slip, no tagging of the purchases is made or crosschecked.
So now there's no poor exchange rate issue. They can buy the booze to exchange it with drugs/whores at a better rate, or buy stuff then return it for cash if the store manager isn't paying attention or is involved in the scam. The only slightly limiting factor is places that accept the EBT and the products/services they sell.

"And they revel in their anti-intellectualism."
Why is it that liberals mistake conservative's skepticism for being anti-intellictual? In the same manner that a muslim fundamentalist would mistake kindness for weakness?
Jan is this your idea of enlightenment? Or are you just a fool?
February 13, 2009 - 09:17 ET by general companyJaneane Garofalo: You cannot be well adjusted, open-minded, pluralistic, enlightened and be a republican. It’s counter-intuitive. And they revel in their anti-intellectualism. They revel in their cruelty.
Well sure you can Jan, anyone can tell you are a narrow minded sap, it takes very little intellect at all. BTW why are so many liberals in therapy if you guys are so "well adjusted" why are you guys so tight with charity if you are so un-cruel? Seems to me you fit your definition better then I do,,,,

February 13, 2009 - 09:27 ET by Mike76Garofalo is engaged in the act of projection:
"In psychology, psychological projection (or projection bias) is a defense mechanism in which one attributes one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts
and/or emotions to others. According to Wade, Tavris (2000) projection
occurs when a person's own unacceptable or threatening feelings are
repressed and then attributed to someone else."

Liberals (and sociopaths) do it constantly. Everybody probably does it a little, but it seems to be the prime mode of operation for liberals (and sociopaths). You can tell what they are up to by what they accuse others of doing, as so they become very predictable. What she's really saying is:
"The reason a person is a liberal is because something is wrong with them. Again, that’s science – that’s neuroscience. We cannot be well adjusted, open-minded, pluralistic, enlightened and be liberals. It’s counter-intuitive. And we revel in our anti-intellectualism. We revel in our cruelty."
"I don’t know if you heard me talking to Jenny a while ago, but I was saying that first you have to be an a**hole and then comes the liberalism. You gotta be a d*** to cleave onto our ideology..."
Garafalo said "I'm small-minded and mean-spirited" and “what we, the Democrat Party has become: obstructionist, contrarians,small-minded, all of these things (sic).”

I just started watching 24 this year and can tell you the weakest link on the show is Garofalo. Her acting does not come off as being natural. In fact, it looks as though she's about to have a bowel movement in each scene. She's just an angry person with an angry cause and I'm not impressed at all with her.

"Well-adjusted" ???
February 13, 2009 - 10:00 ET by LionKingLiberals believe that Terri Schiavo died of natural causes when in fact she was starved to death; but that's okay, because they are "well-adjusted".
If an animal has been found to have died because IT was starved to death, Garfy and PETA and other liberals would be assailing the person responsible; after all, they are "well-adjusted".
Perhaps my understanding of "well-adjusted" is different, but a decent person would be outraged by the hypocrisy of the liberal stance.

February 13, 2009 - 10:25 ET by Lord ErondI mean, what are you supposed to say to this? The obvious questions are: Is she high? Is she psychotic? Other relevant questions are: Who is this woman and what makes her think any of us care about her views and opinions? Also more important to ask is, What does this woman produce except carbon footprints and hot air? I mean, if we were to eliminate all the non-essential people on the planet, we could start with her because she has no meaningful skills useful to a productive society. Or you could go deeper and ask, Did her conservative father molest her? And if he did, did she enjoy it?
I think these are all relevant questions to ask when dealing with a personality type like this. It would definitely help us to understand this type of insanity.

After some more of this kind of ad hominem rubbish, they went to a commercial break. When they returned, Sam had left the studio, as well as Josh (the guy who runs their blog), and the show came to an ungraceful conclusion.

February 13, 2009 - 11:56 ET by snaggletoothieGarafalo's deep psyche need to feel morally superior to someone is sad. Her limbic predisposition to hate does not bode well for the future of America. I have seen her on Maher's show and she still needs to demonstrate an ability to speak rationally before her estimates of the intelligence of others can be taken seriously,
But is this the best use of MRC's space? There will always be people as irrational as Garafalo. But I suspect that very few self-respecting lefties are going to pay much attention to he. The woman is flat out ignorant
February 13, 2009 - 13:50 ET by AshleeSeriously. She has been on this kick since I was young enough to need my parents to see a PG-13 movie, and its still just as annoying and ill-founded. She pans an entire collective of diverse political opinions (the GOP) yet her reasoning for doing such is that they are closed minded.
There's nothing more closed minded to me than someone who judges the batch of eggs by the very few broken ones. She also ought to look in her own egg basket. There are no doubt bad influence and people who fall under the banner of 'Republican,' but there are many many more under her banner of 'progressive' who champion human and personal rights, yet have no problem exploiting and removing said rights to serve their own means.
As an attempted objective person (attempt is the best any of us can do) I can say I have indeed met many Democrats who have soothed my worries that they are all left wing radicals who want to kill all religions, but *especially* Christianity, destroy family values (not necessarily the man-woman family unit, but just the idea of a family unit in general) and constantly trying to make public view of sex as something of a commodity rather than a special event that should be held for intimate expression between two people in love. These democrats who have made me realize there *are* sane democrats also decry such radical figures as this shrew as well. The difference is, the GOP, while veheminently disagreeing with many democrat led endeavors, they still respect and work with them. It is Congressional and senate *democrats* who will shut out talks, and just fold their arms and go 'la la la la la' when they don't get things 100% their way; especially with the set up as it is now.
Simply put, this woman needs a muzzle. She doesn't understand her hypocrisy and just how transparent it is. She is judging an entire collective over her percieved belief that *all* Republicans are of the right wing fringe, and a wholly judgemental and vitrolic lot. However, who is the one who's casting stones here?

February 13, 2009 - 18:05 ET by danebramageIf Janeane was even one iota as brilliant as she thought she was, she might see the enormous, gaping hole in her theory. It's big enough to march a kindergartner through:
If conservatives are the way they are due to material causes--what she calls "neuroscience"--then they can't help it. They're simply wired that way. So how can she sit there and criticize conservatives for being the way they are? She might as well criticize crocodiles for being big, mean, and nasty. It's just what they do.
By the same token, if Janeane happens to be wired "right," how is that any credit to her? Where does she get off prancing around, acting all superior, for simply doing what her brain is programmed by nature to do?
There's a great deal more abject stupidity latent in her remarks, but this will work, I think, as a starting point.
