Controversial Study on Illegal Immigration to Be Released Tomorrow

  • Bookmark and Share

The Federation for American Immigration Reform, or FAIR, issued a press release announcing that their cost study on immigration will be released tomorrow during a news conference at Iowa's 2007 Talk Radio Row.

FAIR's press release states that “previous state and private studies over-estimated tax receipts and under-estimated costs.”

The details of this study are sure to be controversial, and the Des Moines Register reported last week that “immigrant-rights groups” are already critical and calling for the upcoming radio event to be scuttled.

Here is part of FAIR's press release promoting the event (bold mine throughout):

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) will introduce its timely cost study to the Iowa media at a news conference in Des Moines, in conjunction with the Iowa 2007 Talk Radio Row -- a two day event at which 22 of the nation's leading talk radio hosts will be broadcasting continuously from Des Moines and focusing on immigration.

The Des Moines Register reported that last week, the Southern Poverty Law Center added FAIR to it's list of hate groups operating in the US, claiming FAIR “has ties to known racists and a long track record of bigotry.”

I don't know if the SPLC's label of “hate group” is warranted or if FAIR's message simply does not agree with the PC idea that criticizing illegal immigration is automatically racist. Often inflammatory labels are thrown out to silence debate.

As for ties to “known racists” and a “record of bigotry,” that could describe Barack Obama and his Trinity United Church of Christ and Ron Paul and his Stormfront fans as well.

Where is the SLPC on the unindicted co-conspirator CAIR and its ties to terrorists and known anti-Semites with records of bigotry and terrorism?

Judge for yourself the validity of FAIR's information tomorrow and whether it should be given weight.

Des Moines Register

Is this the same newspaper that performed those very biased GOP and Dim debates a couple weeks ago? And they dare talk about fairness?

SPLC is guilty of slander and liable

They use illegal methods to try and silence those with opposing viewpoints.

How is this for irony: In order for the contentions by the SPLC to be true about FAIR, all illegal immigrants must be of the same race or ethnic origin. Since they are clearly not, then SLPC is guilty of bigotry and prejudice itself by issueing that statement.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

Good Point

SPLC has the validity of the LaRaza.Just left wing racist organizations.

Was Harry Reid a racist and bigot?

Senator Harry Reid:  "..entice freeloaders and scam artists from around the world."

And Lynn, where was the SLPC on the Morman Democrat Senator Harry Reid (now senate majority leader), back when he felt the way most Americans still feel? Do they consider him a racist and a bigot?

And for the life of me, I don't know where I copied this from some time back, and I apologize to the source - but it's too good not to share.  (;~>

In an Aug. 5, 1993 news release, Sen., Harry Reid's D., NEV office said he introduced the bill '[i]n response to increased terrorism and abuse of social programs by aliens." His "Immigration Stabilization Act of 1993," he said, "overhauls the nation's immigration laws and calls for a massive scale-down of immigrants allowed into the country from approximately 800,000 to 300,000."

"Our borders have overflowed with illegal immigrants placing tremendous burdens on our criminal justice system, schools and social programs," Reid said in 1993. "The Immigration and Naturalization Service needs the ability to step up enforcement."

Reid said during Senate debate at that time: "If making it easy to be an illegal alien is not enough, how about offering a reward for being an illegal immigrant? No sane country would do that, right? Guess again. If you break our laws by entering this country without permission and give birth to a child, we reward that child with U.S. citizenship and guarantee full access to all public and social services this society provides."

Reid, in his 1993 press statement, was quoted saying, "Safeguards like welfare and free medical care are in place to boost Americans in need of short-term assistance. These programs were not meant to entice freeloaders and scam artists from around the world."

Even worse, he said, "Americans have seen heinous crimes committed by individuals who are here illegally."

Reid said, at the time, the U.S. open-door policy was being "abused at the expense of honest, working citizens." "We are a country founded upon fairness and justice," Reid said. "An individual in real threat of torture or long-term incarceration because of his or her political beliefs can still seek asylum. But this bill closes the door to those who want to abuse America's inherent generosity and legal system."

Reid also emphasized, "Recent terrorist acts, including the World Trade Center bombing, have underscored the need to keep violent criminals out of the country."

Please note. That WTC bombing, Reid referred to was in 1993.

1993 wasnt a Bill Clinton

1993 wasnt a Bill Clinton in the office of POTUS at that time?  I wonder if he might have changed his tune when the GOP came to town?

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Dan

Dan. Well of course he be there then - in that moment, floating in a sea of inexperience and inexperienced advisors. But in a few of these issues, I'll defend Bill Clinton to a certain degree - on principle. Compared to what we are looking at today, Clinton was a moderate. In fact, if you ever read any of the leftist periodicals (The Nation, Mother Jones, etc.) during those years; they considered him just another right wing corporate thug. On numerous issues, Clinton was inclined to move in a moderate direction on issues such as free trade, NAFTA, immigration reform, SS reform, spying on Americans, US policy of extroadinary rendition, etc., but as the left tested him, and as the MSM offered little support on moderate issues, and has his term entered the 2nd half Clinton did what he shoud be most noted for: not leading. He gave into the leftists MSM on almost every issue. gary.

PS - Oh, a little perspective for today. Hillary is no Bill Clinton. And Bill Clinton, today, has little moderation left in him.

...“immigrant-rights

...“immigrant-rights groups” are already critical and calling for the upcoming radio event to be scuttled.

I don't like what you say so shutup? The neo-facists have no shame.

Typical

That's typical. Leftists who don't agree with something want to shut it down. Leftist groups on campuses shout down speakers they don't agree with. That's how they monopoloze the conversation...shout down and shut down anyone who disagrees.

If there were a radio show espousing illegal immigration and someone even spoke out against it, the left would accuse them of censorship. But they have no problem trying to completely shut down a report they don't like.

Southern Poverty Law Firm

Two men and a dog in their garage for the specific liberal purpose of branding others as hate groups.

No one should give any cred to what this liberal stooge group has to say about anything.

No matter what the quality

No matter what the quality is of the data in the report when it becomes available for examination, it would have been much less provacative to release it well after the primaries there and put it in the light of potentially being seen as an election shaper.

It is not like it is a policy altering news breaker and I tend to think they are going to shoot themselves in the foot or at least set themselves up as easy clay pigeons if they do it now.

I'm sure that this report,

I'm sure that this report, valid or not, will cast aside by the MSM as more racist bile by the anti-immigration right. The illegal part of it be damned.

BTW, is the "caution" sign in the picture real?

Yes, those are real

Yes, those are real "caution" road signs in California.

Hmm. I guess I live just far

Hmm. I guess I live just far enough north of the border in Texas as to not have seen any. What's next, a welcome mat?

BTW, shouldn't the sign have more kids and no dad? Or do they just wait until they get here to make that family structure?

I wish the MSM and wacko groups would get off the "Fair" kick!

I'm getting sick of hearing and reading "Fair" this, "Fair"
that and "Fair" every other thing. "Fair" is thrown around like a linking verb attached to every other sentence regarding every other thing. When I see, read or hear this word "Fair" it is almost always incorrectly substituted for "reality" much like used car sales are now "Great Events." Get off this word
"Fair" and let us readers decide for our selves if some thing is "Fair" based upon it’s own merits rather than considering us a bunch of dim-witted idiots who are too stupid to realize that instead of candy you're trying to shove Robitussin down our thoughts.

Of late, this word "Fair" is pretty much synonymous with "lookout, I'm getting ready to feed you a load of crap or rip you off." Now this sounds more like the MSM I so dearly love and admire. Here's a thought; why not substitute "MSM" for this word "Fair." Instead of "Federation for American Immigration Reform" insert "MSM" reform or instead of "Fair Tax" insert "MSM Tax." At least this way we would have fair (MSM) warning that we're in the line of fire.

FAIR report blacked out in DM Register, DM TV

As of 8 pm CST on Thursday the FAIR report does not appear in my quick scans of the Des Moines Register website, nor the website of the four TV news operations, WHO-TV, KCCI-TV, WOI-TV, or KDSM-TV.  You can link to Jan Michaelson's podcast at www.whoradio.com.  He broadcast his show from the Mariott in the 2 1/2 hours before the event.
