Blogger Who Prank Called Scott Walker, Now a Media Darling, Has Sordid History

By Lachlan Markay | February 24, 2011 | 16:49

Change font size:  A |  A

Since lefty blogger Ian Murphy prank called Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker on Wednesday, various media outlets have devoted significant coverage to the prankster. None have seen fit to mention some of Murphy's more colorful antics - proclaiming "f**k the troops," for instance, or pretending to be autistic to gain access for a story.

CNN has been out front covering the prank and its perpetrator. The channel named Murphy its "most intriguing person of the day" in one segment, and devoted an article on its website to Murphy's wild claims - that Walker is "delusional," as CNN's headline blared, and that market economics amounts to a "fairy tale."

In reaching out to Murphy for comment, however, CNN did not see fit to ask him - or even mention in its multiple stories about the prank - that he is not just a "liberal website editor," but is in fact a radical, foaming-at-the-mouth leftist whose work includes fantasies about killing prominent Republicans and other far-left memes popular during the Bush years.

For a taste of Murphy's style, observe this excerpt of a 2008 article in the Buffalo Beast headlined "F**k the Troops":

So, 4000 rubes are dead. Cry me the Tigris. Another 30,000 have been seriously wounded. Boo f**king hoo. They got what they asked for—and cool robotic limbs, too…

The nearly two-thirds of us who know this war is bull***t need to stop sucking off the troops. They get enough action raping female soldiers and sodomizing Iraqi detainees. The political left is intent on “supporting” the troops by bringing them home, which is a good thing. But after rightly denouncing the administration’s lies and condemning this awful war, relatively sensible pundits—like Keith Olbermann—turn around and lovingly praise the soldiers’ brave service to the country. Why?

You get the idea.

Many of Murphy's writings perfectly channeled the attitude of the frantic anti-war left during the Bush years. "If Rove is Bush’s brain," he wrote in another article, "may the 43rd president be lobotomized before we string him up."

But don't worry, Murphy has at least a few qualms with murdering elected officials. "Do I often fantasize of jamming a rusty shiv into the Vice President’s eye socket and twirling it around until he passes out from shock and slowly bleeds to death? Of course," he wrote in 2007. "Would I do it? No. This author does not torture." He does, however, engage in some pretty sick homicidal fantasies.

Give these excerpts, you will probably be slightly less surprised - if thoroughly disgusted - to learn that Murphy has posed as a sufferer of Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, in order to gain access to an event he admits he otherwise would not have been able to attend. So the man is shameless, and an unethical journalist.

Yet despite all this, no news outlet that has covered Murphy and his latest antic have bothered looking into his history of absurd and highly-offensive statements and actions. And CNN was not the only one. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell brought Murphy on air for a 5-minute interview segment. O'Donnell simply labeled him "the editor of Buffalo Beast and the most important phone caller of the day."

Plenty of other media outlets mentioned Murphy, of course, but all either neglected to sift through his work for the Buffalo Beast, or declined to mention it in their reports.

The left, of course, went gaga over the prank call, and the mainstream press was not about to spoil the fun.

CNN apologized for saying the word "target"

Submitted by Ashrak on Thu, 02/24/2011 - 5:10pm.

They will have to repent to the civility God for a year on this one......

What this shows, yet again, is that the mainstream media does not do its homework about anything or anyone. It presents to the masses what it's bosses want the masses to parrot. Kinda like unions bosses do.

I am thinking the American people are getting tired of being treated like idiots. Indeed, they are tired of being idiots.

Wanna make things better? Here are three easy steps.

1) Realizethat  just about the opposite of everything MSNBC presents is where the reality based truth resides.

2) Starve the beast that is nanny-state government.

3) Stop voting for Democrats whether they have a (D) or an (R) behind their names on the ballot.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Submitted by tcm14 on Thu, 02/24/2011 - 8:50pm.

Yeah, the liberals championing this guy are always the first to scream "hate speech" (even when there is no proof of said hate speech, and all they can do is vaguely refer to "verbal code"). Now they have an actual example of REAL hate speech and incitement to violence, and they fail to mention it in their reporting. The guy totally failed with his prank call anyway. 20 minutes on the phone with the governor and he couldn't get him to say ONE incriminating thing. Walker FTW!

When your liberal friends bring that up, they are trying to deflect away from the message in the videos.

There are several stories here and on other conservative sites that talk about what was said on the "gotcha tape" We don't have to run away from the substance.

We need a better class of troll®. (h/t Blonde)

RtJ,

Brent Bozell wrote an editorial condeming O'Keefe on this very website. Try looking it up.

Interesting though how you breezed by the typical violent leftist rhetoric on display, and yet tried to equate it to a sex scandal where there was no sex.

Considering the rules

Submitted by Rush to Judgement on Fri, 02/25/2011 - 9:44am.

Laid out in the article by Lachlan Markay, in the event a sneaky blogger uncovers a seedy plot, it is required for the author of the article or report to disclose the past missteps and misdeeds of the "hero" in question.

If these are the rules it seems fit that everyone should have to play by them. If you simply understand that my post was trying to equate this to a sex scandal, your comprehension skills are firing blanks.

Read it slowly...Exposing &(that means and) Combating Liberal Media Bias.  Do you think James O'Keefe will ever put out a video without the MSM bringing up what you are talking about? James O'Keefe tried to prank a CNN reporter, and it backfired.

James O'Keefe previously exposed Obama's ACORN in a sting. In the ACORN sting, ACORN was caught aiding and abetting CHILD PROSTITUTION, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, TAX EVASION, MONEY LAUNDERING, and SEXUAL SLAVERY.

Later, James O'Keefe tried to prank a CNN reporter, and it backfired.

It was crude, it was stupid, and it was a waste of time. And accordingly Brent Bozell denounced James for it.

You originally said, "I don't recall Newsbusters pointing out the O'Keefe sex toy/Boudreau scandal every time he releases a new video, so I guess liberals are following by example."

Well, I don't recall you violent liberals reminding everyone about Bill Clinton's sexual adventures with a girl who was old enough to be his daughter, every time Bill Clinton jumps in front of a television camera.

I don't recall you violent liberals reminding everyone about how Ted Kennedy's "accident" cost a young woman her life, every time drunken Teddy would publicly speak.

I don't recall you violent liberals reminding everyone about the demoKKKrats marriage to the KKK every time civil rights are brought up.

Shall I go on? Or are you getting the message?

James O'Keefe tried to prank a CNN reporter, and it backfired.

We ALL heard about it. We heard about it from NBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, NPR, MSNBC, CNN, FOX, the New York Slimes, the Los Angeles Slimes, etc.

Ian Murphy on the other hand, mocked the deaths and wounding of American soldiers. Ian Murphy fantasized about the murder of Karl Rove, the President of the United States (George Bush), and the Vice President of the United States (Dick Cheney).

Ian Murphy made a prank phone call to the Governor of Wisconsin in an attempt to make him say something incriminating. And failed miserably.

Sure, you heard that Ian made a prank phone call to the Governor of Wisconsin.

Did you hear about Ian's bloodthirsty background on NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, the New York Slimes, etc.?

No, you did not hear about the unstable violent Ian in any of those media outlets. Not a peep.

In fact, you did not hear that Ian failed at trying to lure the Governor into a trap. Not a peep.

Now RtJ, this is where you're going to have to put down the crack pipe for a minute, and pay attention.

The website you are on right now is called NEWSBUSTERS.

Right on the mast head, it reads "Exposing & Combating Liberal Media Bias"

The article is not about James O'Keefe and his prank. The article is about a typical bloodthirsty liberal, and how the liberal media purposefully avoided mentioning this persons shocking past.

I believe that your posts are a rather pathetic attempt to change the topic, and avoid the subject of Ian's bloodthirsty background.

Avoid context and concentrate on hyperbole because it is easy to be critical of exaggerations but more difficult to debate context.

An excellent strategy and I'm sure anyone in the media would be proud.  Granted, be definition, exaggerations distort reality and can be insulting to the senitive.

because by that logic we would throw out all of media and the politicians and hopefully start over with a whole lot less BS.

Your personal choice to separate the BS from the context and I agree that the line has to be drawn somewhere.  I would only like to point out that ones political and social views are going to dictate where a person draws the line and therefore may interfere with dialogue.  Everyone does it though and there are times I'm probably worse than most.

Very Bad Problem

Submitted by NC Boy on Thu, 02/24/2011 - 9:32pm.

Conservative leaders are going to have to be a lot more careful about who they talk to.  This IS war, and we all need to know it.  We can discount it all we want, but this incident hurt the cause tremendously.  As did Brian Kilmeade's turning around the poll figures on Fox and Friends.  Now they have an example that they will use for 20 years of a "Fox Lie".

As someone that actually has Asperger Syndrome, it's insulting that this rabid hater would pretend to be an Aspie.  From what I read, he caricatured AS.  There are some sick people on the far and radical left, and Ian Murphy is one of them.

Yet, Murphy is the latest left-wing hero for pranking the evil far-right (I'm being sarcastic) Governor Walker.  He's following in the footsteps of the previous LW hero, Sheriff Dupnik.  In fact, search "ian murphy is a hero" in quotes and you'll get a Democratic Undergound message board thread that says just that.

I have a son who has autism so my sympathies are with you 100%. The hipocrisy of the left is their claim to be on the side of the weak and helpless when in reality they use the weak and the helpless as a pass to power. Like the Communists of the past, their rise to the top is attained by piling the bodies of all those they destroyed on top of each other and using them as a ladder. To them, the end always justifies the means!
