Pat Buchanan: People Blaming Palin for Shooting Are the 'Birthers of the Left'

By Lachlan Markay | January 14, 2011 | 17:56

A  A

Ah, the perils that befall Chris Matthews when he brings a non-liberal on his show. Maybe this is why it happens so rarely.

MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan made an astute observation on Thursday's "Hardball": people who continue to blame Sarah Palin or any other conservative for Saturday's shooting in Tucson - people like Chris Matthews - are the new conspiracy theorists. They bear striking resemblance to 'Truthers' and 'Birthers' in their refusal to allow evidence to alter their views (video below the fold - h/t Jeff Poor).

Ace has a fantastic take on this exchange:

Matthews reacts exactly like a Truther to this too. A Truther (note I changed the terms of debate from Birther to Truther) brings up his crazy ideas, states his crazy idea, but then when challenged, he stops asserting the craziest part of his idea and starts claiming he means something more modest. Like, a Truther will start saying "I'm just raising questions" and claiming he "doesn't know" who put those non-existent explosive charges in all 110 floors of the WTC.

That's what Matthews does. After claiming a direct connection for five or six days straight, after Buchanan tells him he's like a Birther or Truther, Matthews starts arguing for the much more modest proposition that saying "Second Amendment remedies" is "wrong."

Well, I'd agree with that! But that is not your thesis, Chris. Your thesis is that Palin's map, and other imagined "incitements," were viewed or heard by Loughner, and that he acted due to these. You can't even establish the former (that he was even aware of them) let alone the latter.

Buchanan offers an excellent analogy

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 01/14/2011 - 6:11pm.

"Facts be damned," seems to be what the Palin-blamers are ranting.

Not unlike the Valerie Plame "outing."  They  still insist it was Cheney, when Armitage had admitted to it before a grand jury, and Novak (the guy who published it) had confirmed it.  In fact, despite Armitage's confession under oath, no one was ever charged let alone convicted of exposing Plame's covert cover, suggesting that there hadn't been any crime to begin with.

But facts don't matter.

We can be assured that the Tuscon crime will be made into a theatrical production -- probably a made-for-TV movie -- and that footage of Palin, Bachmann, Limbaugh, Beck, et al will be used in the scenes prior to the recreated murders in order to set a "context" for the "narrative" even without directly pointing fingers.

And Obama's "memorial" speech will be marked as a seminal turning point in his Presidency.  The victims, again, are mere props in the stageplay.

Josef Goebbels would be proud of this crap.

What's in a name?

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Fri, 01/14/2011 - 6:07pm.

So what do we call these people?

Mappers?

Cartographers?

Sighters?

Libelers?

Bull's-eyers?

Targeters?

Actually, since the Daily Kos ran a similar map targeting Blue Dog Democrats and including Rep. Giffords in 2008, perhaps we should just identify them for what they are:

Irrational Sarah Palin Haters.

Really? Anyone here think two

Submitted by evets11 on Fri, 01/14/2011 - 9:57pm.

Really? Anyone here think two years from now there will still be a radical contingent of left-wing wackos demanding that Sarah Palin apologize for an event she was only tangentially involved in?

That Pat is making a false equivalency. The left is incapable of holding on to a pointless talking point for that long, but the right is.

The equivalency relates to the irrationality of the positions, not the length ot time the positions are maintained.  Otherwise, I tend to agree with you.

I thought Buchanan did a really poor job there.

Submitted by lumpy on Fri, 01/14/2011 - 7:21pm.

He kept getting interrupted by Matthews when all Buchanan had to say to shut Matthews up was to  remind Chrissy about Obama's own comment "when they bring a knife, we bring a gun."

Raise your hand if you could have done BETTER here?

Submitted by Tomorama on Fri, 01/14/2011 - 8:08pm.

I agree, the fat bastard Matthews spews whatever he want's, gives the liberal the floor and when he is challenged, he doesn't let the Republican get out three words BEFORE interrupting and asking other questions.

Buchannon has an EASY argument here, first off, "Spittles STFU and let me speak", YOU and your ilk have done NOTHING but blame Palin etc, etc for a week and she has the nerve to stick up for herself and you hammer her for that.

He had a brutal libtard and a quasi Republican on earlier in the show and he did the same thing as here, the libtard I can't think of his name was BLAMING PALIN for being political while there are dead people.......

I HATE these people with a passion BECAUSE of the tactics they use.

Oblunder can make a gun analogy and a getting in your neighbors face analogy, an enemy who should be punished, BUT NOBODY SHOVES THAT UP MATTHEWS and MessNBC ditto heads asses.

I VOLUNTEER.

Watershed?

Submitted by okiehawk44 on Fri, 01/14/2011 - 9:42pm.

I'm just really tired of people who should know the difference between "tolerance" and "insanity" prove over and over that they do not.

Who caused the deaths and the injuries in Tucson?

If anyone including a friend or family member answers with anything other than "that mentally ill person" or "Jared Loughner" then you know without a doubt that he or she is totally insane and never to be trusted with anything important ever again.

Has anybody found a place where Chris Matthews actually blames Palin, or Mark Levin, or anybody on the right for the shooting?  All I could find was the attached, and it contains no such accusation by CM, though his guests get kind of close.

Aside from the reference to my obtuseness (obtusity?), I agree with you.  Still, the article says that he claimed "a direct connection for five or six days straight," so maybe there's a quotation I haven't found yet.

Submitted by sentry_99 on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 2:45am.

He choses his guests to set the narrative he wants.  For example E.Steven Collins "The idea that Sarah Palin, who was governor of a state would put crosshairs over congressional districts and then a week or so later (False by the way), a congressperson is almost fatally shot and a federal judge is killed and other bystanders, who came out to meet their congress person were, were shot the way they were, there is a direct relationship."  I agree that in this case (maybe others but this is the first one that came to mind), Matthews said nothing and that is partly the problem.  It is HIS show with HIS guests pushing HIS narrative.  If he disagreed with that statement, it his his duty on HIS show to correct this person.
