Reminder: 'God Hates Fags' Church Run By Democrats
Given the Westboro Baptist Church's protest at the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards, it's worth revisiting the old lefty canard that the group is "right-wing." The claim is especially popular in the liberal blogosphere, where it's made ad nauseum during any discussion of the group.
So let's review some history. Fred Phelps, the head of the "church," actually has a long history of support for Democrats. He has run as a Democrat for governor of Kansas three tiumes, mayor of Topeka twice, and for the U.S. Senator once.
Al Gore was apparently the family's favorite Democrat. Phelps himself was a Gore delegate when he ran for president in 1988. The Phelpses even held a fundraiser for Gore in their Topeka, Kansas home. Their support paid off. The Phelps family was invited to the Clinton/Gore inaugurations in 1993 and 1997.
Here are some pictures originally posted at the website of the Log Cabin Republicans (link above) more than 10 years ago of Gore and various members of the Phelps family:

This is all worth remembering in case a reporter picks up on this meme - currently confined to the nutroots - and pushes it into the mainstream.

You are absolutely right. Liberals have no conscience. That's why liberals supported Margaret Sanger in her quest to rid the world of colored babies. That's why liberals loved Stalin, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, and other brutal despots who murdered millions. That's why liberals support infanticide from sea to shining sea. That's why liberals support national weakness, deny people the right to support themselves and defend themselves, and on and on.
Liberals not only have no conscience, they are scarcely able to say the word, and when they can, it is the kind of disgusted murmur like the way that a vampire speaks of crosses.

Did you even see that he linked to various lefty nutcases pushing this theme? Oh, no. I guess you forgot to read that part. Did you notice that Westboro is often in the news (unlike David Duke, for example)? Did you know that David Duke changed his party allegiance after he had caused too many PR problems for the Republicans? But I forgot. Jer is interested in "relevance" (which means "Jer determines what is relevant, not reality") and "responsibility". Responsibility, of course, means only allowing liberals to determine what is news. Anything else is simply irresponsible.
I guess you porn-loving abortionists can praise Hugh Heffner and fret about responsibility in the same breath. It's all part of the mindless moralless "nuance" that all liberals possess in place of a mind.

So which lefty nutjobs are pushing what themes?

I agree. Phelps and his church are not the media. What does it matter which politicians or political ideology he favors? It's not as if both sides don't find him disgusting. Just a pointless entry of guilt by association, and it's not even willful association.

The tagline is "exposing and combating liberal media bias." Phelps and co. are not the media. The point was right there in the title: "Reminder: 'God Hates Fags' Church Run By Democrats". Nothing about the media. We can all hate Democrats and liberals, we can hate everything they stand for, but we can also recognize this was a lame attempt at guilt by association.

Besides the one that resides at the top of your head, is that the media is absolutely silent about Phelps' association with the Dem party, whereas a connection with Republicans would be shouted from the rooftops every time this nastly little group made news.
Liberals constantly refer to Phelps and his gang as conservative, see for yourself.

Even Conservapedia points out the following:
http://Phelps has since changed his opinion about Gore when he joined Bill Clinton on the 1992 presidential ticket. Phelps turned on him and claimed Gore was a conservative icon of the Democratic Party that sold out on some critical social issues. Phelps also demonstrated against Clinton and Gore during the 1997 inaugural.
Don't you agree it would have been appropriate for Lachlan to do likewise?
Phelps is a severely disturbed homophobic nut who no responsible liberal or conservative supports.

The meme in the media is that these nuts are politically conservative, which is patently false. Turning on Gore doesn't outweight the fact that the guy is a life-long Dem.
If Phelps had subsequently run for office as a Repub, that would be noteworthy. He hasn't changed his political affiliation, he's just not a Bore fan anymore.

Have you read what Phelps has said about Democrats such as Wesley Clark, John Kerry, Pelosi and many others? It' stomach-turning. The only contemporary Democrats he has any use for--or is a "fan" of--are the few who are, or whom he thinks may be, anti-gay.
I'm sure there are still some racist KKK members who are life-long registered Democrats, too. Ask them to name their "liberal" heroes or which crop of current Dems they admire. It would be a mighty short list.

Phelps is right-wing on social issues, that is correct. What should be made clear is that he doesn't represent any real constitutency among real conservatives. He's just a circus side show that has nothing to do with mainstream politics. If the fact that he identifies as a Democrat helps prove that, then its important to let people know he's a Democrat.
