For Media, 'Birthers' Are Big News; Socialists, Not So Much
Which is crazier: believing President Obama was not born in the United States or is actually a Muslim, or believing in total state control of the economy? If you answered the latter, you are probably not a journalist.
The mainstream press went absolutely nuts over an August Pew poll showing that 18 percent of Americans believed that Obama was a Muslim. There was also considerable media chatter over a CNN poll that same month, which found that 27 percent of Americans thought Obama was "probably" or "definitely" born abroad.
But so far, reporters have been eerily silent on a Rasmussen poll showing that 27 percent of Americans believe the federal government should "manage the economy" - as distinguished from simply providing services like Social Security or unemployment insurance.
The partisan trends are also interesting. According to the two aforementioned August polls, 41 percent of self-identified Republicans think Obama is probably or definitely not an American citizen, while 31 percent of GOPers think he's a Muslim.
Wild as those theories are, a full 42 percent of Democrats believe that the government should manage the economy completely. As NB executive editor Matthew Sheffield wrote at the Washignton Examiner:
Democratic politicians have repeatedly stressed to the public that they are not socialists and do not believe in socialism. They may want to have a few words with some of their voters, according to a poll released over the weekend by Rasmussen Reports.
In that survey of 1,000 adults, nearly half of all Democrats, 42 percent, indicated that they believe the government should "manage the economy completely."
That viewpoint is not exactly socialism—there's a different between managing and owning after all—but it's a far cry from the free market ideology that non-Democrats favored in the poll. Just under 25 percent of independents favored government completely managing the economy.
Is this view - that the state should completely manage the economy - not just as divorced from reality as the wild theories regarding Obama's religion and nationality?
Perhaps some perspective is needed. Sure, views about the president's religion or even his eligibility for office can spark some vitriolic debate. But total economic collectivization is responsible for millions of deaths (how many millions is not definitively known) throughout the last century. Is an endorsement of that same ideology not far more repugnant than any opinion on Obama's religion or heritage?
The mainstream press doesn't seem to think so. Just in terms of the sheer volume of coverage, the two August polls absolutely dwarf the most recent Rasmussen survey, indicating that most news outlets consider doubts about Obama's citizenship or religion far more newsworthy than a quarter of the nation's endorsement of total economic statism.
Indeed, in stark contrast to the waves of coverage garnered by both the Pew and CNN polls, the mainstream press has been completely silent on the Rasmussen poll.
Which position is crazier? Well, certainly the view that Obama is a Muslim or that he is not an American citizen is completely divorced from reality. The president's birth certificate has been released publicly [Update: at a reader's request, I'll note that what was released was Obama's "certification of live birth," which is the official, notraized document sent to anyone who requests proof that an individual was born in Hawaii. As a matter of policy, the state does not release actual birth certificates.]. Rumors about his religion seem to have been based in anonymous email chains that made provably false claims about the president - such as the bizarre assertion that he took the oath of office with his hand on the Koran.
But clearly there is ample evidence, both academic and historical, that economic collectivization is, has been, and forever will be a total failure of an economic model. And remember that the Rasmussen poll differentiated between people who want simple government services, and those who favor total economic planning. While the level of government intervention in the economy is of course still a topic of heated (and mainstream) political debate, few intellectually honest people still claim that total state control over the economy is desirable (well, maybe not so few, if Rasmussen is to be believed).
But this is not the forum to discuss political philosophy. What is clear, however, is the general media attitude towards these beliefs. If these polls are correct, roughly the same number of Americans believe that Obama is not an American citizen as believe that economic planning is the preferable macroeconomic model. Far fewer believe that Obama is a Muslim, yet those Americans, not the ones endorsing an economic system responsible for so many millions of deaths, have received the press attention.
And as long as the press is concerned with the mainstreaming of fringe views, why is it so concerned with some Republicans' views on Obama's religion, but not some Democrats' ideas about economic planning? As wild as the former are, they're certainly far less destructive from a historical perspective.

If this was a poll, I would go with the "both are equally crazy" option.
By the way, just a question for clarity. What did you mean by "an economic system responsible for so many millions of deaths?"

I wish I could see the exact text of the questionnaire. If the question simply was, "Should the federal government manage the economy?" that leaves lots of room for interpretation. To some, it may mean switching to a fully socialist system. To others, it might mean lowering interest rates when there's a recession. And finally, there are those who know nothing about economics or political science, but just want the government to do something helpful so they can make ends meet.
the answer would.....

...still be "no". The government should not manage the economy nor be involved in interest rates. the market should drive those. the only thing the gov't should do is to ensure that contracts are kept and prevent unfair practices.
Your answer would be no.

I believe the number of Americans surveyed that are OK with a socialist hybrid form of government in America is merely a predictable abberation.
Many ordinary people are afraid and uncertain of their families future well being due to the dire straits the Obama Socialist Regime has falsely created throughout the predominently white middle class.
Not until We the People flush Obama from our system, like the piece of ______ he is, many will remain convinced that is their only means of survival.
Unfortunately Obama's stated goal of fundamental transformation is actually code for his agenda of destroying our capitalistic ( free enterprise ) system, democratic form of government as well as our very way of life for the past 230 years.
Now that the Republicans are back in control of the Congress he will attempt at every turn to circumvent the Congress and Constitution by attempting back door manuvers, through executive order etc. to follow through with his subversive plans.
Now we'll finally get to see those secretive czars hidden away in the bowels of the White House in action.
I believe once we rid ourselves of Obama, we'll find hidden away in that Al Gore inspired lock box of his life, that he was born in Hawaii. The big, bad, dark secret dogging him all these years is that he lied to get into the best schools once he landed on the mainland.
I believe he presented himself falsely on his admissions applications, stating he was an African national giving him an unfair advantage over other American students.
A certain amount of places are set aside for students from abroad. Either way he cheated & lied his way through life, just as he continues to do to this day.

Well..
This may be so, because a much larger % of GOPers actually read news sources that provide actual real news.
1.) It was a Democratic operative, a Hillary supporter from Texas, Linda Starr, who pushed the story onto Philip Berg, yet another Democratic operative and Clinton supporter who filed the "first Birther lawsuit, requesting an injunction to stop the Democratic Convention from going forward and alleging that Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii," on Aug. 21st 2008.
2.) Obama, himself, referred to his faith as Muslim: Obama Admits Muslim Faith and this is more than interesting, here.
Last night, my wife and watched, "The Stoning of Soraya M." I'd strongly recommend it to all; however, it's a tough one to witness. Wouldn't it be interesting if someone in the MSM would ask President Obama if he's watched it - and what he thinks should be done to make sure that we can rid the earth of such honorific human behavior?

So a significantly larger per centage of Republicans buy into the preposterous garbage spewed by a miserable goofball, and the fact he is a Democrat somehow validates this buffoonery? I'm not so sure that's something to be gloating over.

The NB focus is to look at media bias. The MSM - which is the leading contributor as to why both of these topics continue to be in the news - has further sought to blame all of Obama's woes here on either Rush, etc., or the Republicans, or the Tea Party, etc. From the beginning they skipped performing their due diligence in reporting the news on where the stories were originating.

Just how did you determine that it's a lager percentage of Conservatives which is contributing to the increase in the recorded poll numbers? The poll doesn't break groups down by political (sorry, ideological) affiliation or association ie whether one is a Conservative, a Liberal, or somewhere in between. Is that just wishful thinking on your part?
The poll only breaks down the respondents between Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. Since there are a whole range of ideologies in each group, there is NO WAY for you to claim that the increase was with Conservatives and not any other ideology.

If you can find the word "Conservatives" in my previous post, I will detail your car once a month for the next year. But since you brought it up, let's think about it. If memory serves, about twice as many Americans self-identify as conservatives than self-identify as liberals. [I believe it's something like 40% to 20%.]
Furthermore, my hunch is that conservatives are overrepresented in the polling breakdown among the range of ideologies.with respect to the opinions of Obama's nationality and religious inclination, that is, more who express doubt in those areas would tend to be conservative Republicans rather than moderate Republicans. What do you think?

I'm glad they're taking polls, but when I go through a HSPD-12 Sec Clearance to get a Federal Job, belief and faith aren't proof that I was born in this Country.
Happy happy thoughts don't work for them. And it doesn't work for the U.S. Constitution. So you can chalk me up with the birther's.
Now please focus for a second. An absence of proof is proof that there is no proof.
I know most people get lost here, but the onus is on Obama to provide proof of his natural birth. A Daily Kos photoshop does not count towards proof. Neither would it count towards my documentation getting a low level security clearance at any federal agency.
All of his student records are sealed, except for the first one at the Madrassa in Indonesia. Who is the last President with sealed records? Weren't they fiddling through Bush's grades and classes not 4 years ago.
We can't even find out what Medical Doctor was attending at his Birth. Or where. Or who was there. There is no long form birth certificate, which every Natural Born US child has. Obama's Father was also a British subject at the time of his birth, which further causes issue.
In any case, I think people that believe something they've never seen from a communist they've never met deserve everything that's coming to them.
"Providing services."
Submitted by CobraMan on Tue, 12/07/2010 - 5:15pm.
Excuse me, but the federal government isn't supposed to "provide" unemployment. That's a STATE "service," not a federal service. No bill has been passed which created the Federal Unemployment Agency.
As far as I'm concerned, Congress, as well as the Obama administration, is violating federal law every time it makes "unemployment" funds available to the States. Where is their authority to do this? It's not written in any federal statues, and it's NOT in the Constitution.
