MSNBC Execs Scramble to Defend Olbermann as 'Countdown' Ratings Decline

  • Bookmark and Share

Keith Olbermann's appeal has generally been his incendiary, attack-dog approach to the news. The approach paid off during the Bush administration when bashing the president was good business for a television host.

Since Obama's inauguration, Olbermann's ratings have been in free-fall, but MSNBC brass are still more than willing not only to keep him on the air, but to defend him against any and all critics.

Asked about Olbermann's plummeting ratings--they have declined 44 percent since last year--MSNBC President Phil Griffin cleverly invoked the cable network's slogan, saying MSNBC is still "the place for politics."

Griffin added, "there are times when politics does great, and there are times when it doesn't." Apparently there are also times when it does great on Fox, but not on MSNBC, like, say, right now. Ratings for the "O'Reilly Factor", Olbermann's 8 p.m. competition, have soared 55 percent during the past year, making it by far the most watched cable news show during that time slot. "Countdown", meanwhile, languishes just behind HLN's Nancy Grace in the coveted 25-54 demographic.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Responding to Griffin's defenseReal Clear Politics columnist Tom Bevan yesterday compared the MSNBC president to former Iraqi Information Minister Baghdad Bob, whose animated statements during the U.S. invasion were so divorced from reality, they bordered on satire.

"Griffin is simply trying to put the best possible spin on the fact that he and his network are losing the media war - badly," Bevan wrote.

During the past month a number of prominent media commentators--if you can call Jon Stewart a commentator--have been highly critical of Olbermann's over-the-top attacks on Republicans and conservatives. His colleague Joe Scarborough called his vitriolic rant against Scott Brown "sad and pathetic." Stewart mocked Olbermann for it on his "Daily Show".

A report on the sad decline of "Countdown" during the past year from DailyFinance's Jeff Bercovici led Olbermann to dub DailyFinance a "right-wing site" during his "Worst Person" segment. Such knee-jerk reactions only seem to have reaffirmed Olbermann's descent into name-calling and ad hominem attacks. Bercovici, for his part, responded,

Keith, I don't know what went into your decision to lie about us on your program. I don't know whether you've ever actually read anything on DailyFinance, or whether one of your producers just prepped a script for you and you performed it. But stuff like this is why people like Jon Stewart and me increasingly have questions about your intellectual honesty and integrity. Knock it off already.

Bercovici wasn't alone, however, in noting that "the world may not have quite as much need of--or patience for--Olbermann and his shtick as it once did." Andrew Malcom of the Los Angeles Times concluded his commentary thusly:

"In the immortal words of Edward J. Smith, captain of the Titanic, 'What iceberg?' "

Think about it...

It's the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" effect. If you scream fire everyday, but there is never a fire, people tire of watching you dreck. This guy is fortunate is ratings are as high as they are. To be blunt, he sucks.

Why on earth?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

would MSNBC want to defend this mentally deficiant clown?  Fire his ignorant a$$ and forget it!!!!

bad taste loses

Just like with CBS and Katie Couric's plummeting ratings, NBC will try to do the same with K. Olbermann. Of course, with Couric's poor rating and the bad economy, CBS is finally waking up and realizing that their bottom line of ratings and $$$ override their pride and bad judgement. She will probably be gone next year or at least with a much reduced annual salary from $14 mil. So, we look forward to the same with MSNBC when they realize that ratings matter and show KO out the door in the near future.

I would love to see Roger

I would love to see Roger Ailes buy MSNBC at a fire sale. The irony would be delicious.

Oh yes indeedy it

Oh yes indeedy it would.

Then we'd have at least two Fair & Balanced station.

Especially 'Balanced' when it comes to the talking heads that would be sent to the nearest nut-hatch that work there now...and Bold Fresh Replacements would be inserted.

Payback's a bitch aint it???

Roger Ailes started NBC cable channel Americas Talking in 1994, which NBC and Microsoft replaced with MSNBC. Ailes left NBC and teamed up with Rupert Murdoch to start Fox News. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Why?

Why would you want Mr Ed if you already owned Secretariat?

Entertainment value at the

Entertainment value at the very least. Just teach Mr. Ed new tricks or send him to the glue factory and bring in some new thoroughbreds.

Is there such a thing......

as a liberal with "intellectual honesty and integrity"???

 I kid, of course.

I can think of three

Juan Williams (although he still occasionally goes a little wacky), Kirsten Powers (who is the rare lib female who is actually pleasing to the eyes), and Paul(?) Caddell.

I think it's Pat Caddell

Williams, Powers, and (to a larger extent) Caddell are usually honest enough to acknowledge when the Dems screw up.

I like the comparison to Baghdad Bob..

that's exactly what ALL the MSM are doing. But now, We the American people are on to them and paying attention. And no matter how many times they tell us the sun is square...we are finally saying noooooo ...it's round.

Reminded me of Obama at the GOP retreat

I was stunned that O answered Mike Pence's question about across the board tax cuts by going on and on how the stimulus really worked.  A real head scratcher.  To make things worse O avoided answering the question.  Mike pressed him to answer the question. O turned away and said "this guy" as in do you believe this guy.

So Keith is really doing a great job it is just that right now it's now working.

The sun?

Isn't it all burning-gas wavery?

Mr Olbermann, Sir

Since I no longer watch O'Reilly (his ego is SO overblown and his mocking of every other Fox News contributor has gone off the deep end), Olbermann seemed a comedic alternative.

I was NOT disappointed.

Anyone catch the convoluted and wacky segment Olbermann did earlier in the week about how HIS ratings were the highest in cable news?

Enjoy!

*FAIR WARNING*  Place all beverages down prior to viewing!

What a maroon

He should have his IQ tatooed on his forehead.

Not even the East German judge would give him a 10 for that performance.  Delusional much?

Thanks for the comedy, Bond.

I hope he fails, too.

Hey, Blonde!

Nice to see you.

Olbermann and O'Reilly are both (heh heh heh) Pecksniffian.

Sorry--still watch Bill

I quit Olbermann the day he berated Hillary for something or other--she was not even in office. Where did this...sportscaster?...get off? I wondered.

Yes. "Countdown is the highest rated show NOT on Fox"

And he says it with a straight face.

And before long . . .

. . . it will be the highest rated "news" show not on Fox and the Cartoon Network.

I think shows on Cartoon

I think shows on Cartoon Network draw more in its demographics than MSNBC. :-)

Let's do the math.

Okay, Just for the sake of argument, let's say that Countdown's 8pm show gets a million viewers (I know, just for the sake of argument).  If it goes up 5% that's only 50,000 more viewers.   Not that good.

Now on to the 10 pm repeat, again for the sake of arguement let's just say the repeat gets 400,000.   10% means 40k.

FNC still slaughters both airings at least 3 to 1.

So Keith can spin it anyway he wants, he's a loser.

O M G

the man is certifiably I N S A N E....the highest rated show not on FOX hahahahahaha the man just don't get it!

Wait, I have lotion

BUT WAIT, IT GETS BETTER!

On tonight's second 'quick comment', Olby actually said his news show is the #1 show for younger viewers.    ANOTHER DEMOGRAPHIC THAT DOESN'T EXIST!

Sort of like 'Jobs saved'.

Olbermann's ratings have

Olbermann's ratings have been in free-fall, but MSNBC brass are still more than willing not only to keep him on the air, but to defend him against any and all critics.

The true cost of MSNBC's line-up is not just the amount they pay to keep the lights on but they also must figure in the missed revenue because of a deliberate exclusion of shows and ideas that would increase their ratings.  Self-identified liberals are a definite minority.  To target the smallest potential audience requires a real commitment to ideology.  Perhaps they never noticed the recent funeral for Air America.

Schadenfreude

"Perhaps they never noticed the recent funeral for Air America."

I imagine the folks at MSNBC are quietly enjoying the demise of Air America; they are probably hoping to add both of Air America's listeners to MSNBC’s audience.

- Relying upon the Liberal Media for your information is like relying upon an embezzler for your portfolio management.

Unfortunately for MSNBC . . .

. . . part of Air America's dismal performance is attributable to the Rachel Maddow show, which was a rebroadcast of her MSNBC show the night before.

Doesn't seem like a winning formula.

Dead weight

So how much longer will MSNBC hold on to this losing lineup? Olbermann and Matthews etc. have been stinking up the joint for years now. (I was amused a few years back when Matthew's ratings were actually too low to accurately measured)

At what point does profitability trump ideology?

And for Keith to immediatly go after the site reporting the numbers during his "worst person" segment speaks volumes about his (lack of) character.

Someone over there has to wake up and fire them all. I think trained monkeys on bicycles or re-runs of the Andy Griffith Show could probably deliver higher ratings than that sad-sack lineup.

Do not cancel his show

Whatever you do GE & NBC, do not take Keith and his little groupie Rachel off the air. Their nightly shows are like little pipeline outposts generating money that flows directly into the RNC treasury.

I'VE CHANGED MY MIND...

You forgot Comcast, but whatever, I agree that Olby, Special Ed, Madcow, Matthews, Shuster, & company to stay in place. These shows are more or less a cable version of the loony left wing blogs like HuffPo, Kos, MediaMatters, & DemU. This is a good thing, they are screwing things up more then usual, & the longer they stay out there, the better.

I've noticed

Olbermann has been relatively calm all week.  After more than one night of yelling about Scott Brown's election, do you think he came to his senses - or someone told him to come to his senses?  And I think he only spent one night of inciting people about Chief Justice Roberts.  Maybe he read my comment that he could be blamed if some nut killed the C.J.

Scott Brown rant

I thought he would be fired for that rant.  I am all for keeping these people on the air.  Keep it up Keith.

"Olbermann has been relatively calm all week.  After more than one night of yelling about Scott Brown's election, do you think he came to his senses - or someone told him to come to his senses?"

Neither...I think the powers that be at MSNBC forced him to start taking his meds again.

Mark Levin is Right

How  long has Mark Levin labeled this show "Countdown to No Ratings?"

My only question is; when the fools in charge of PMSNBC figure out that this guy is a money looser and cancel him, will we continue to see him propped up by other networks the same way they keep dishing up Bryant Gumball to us in Show after Show?

Never Forget: Climate Change is what you call Global Warming when your Global Warming Summit/Conference/Protest is Snowed Out!

That sentence should start at "Olbermann", and just leave the last word off. That makes it more accurate AND Countdown-like.

"Beauty is only skin deep, but liberal's to the bone." - me

A note to Keith and NBC....

Keith, I have tried to watch your show if for no other reason than to see what both sides of the political spectrum are saying. I believe I am a better person if I can see all sides of an issue. I have to tell you, though, you offer nothing to the arguments of your side. The many times I have tried to watch I hear only your manufacture of facts. When you use the words of those you disagree and twist them in so many directions other than what their original intent was you lose me. I am and I trust most of your viewers are smarter than you assume we are. However, the veiwers you have that hang on to your words I believe are hungry for some honest analysis of daily events. It is obvious that they are looking for something other than what you are offering to them because of the exodus to FOX and other outlets that give as many facts as possible between the commercial breaks. You can choose to believe that FOX is not a real news orginization and everyone else is lying to their vewiers and readers at your own peril. But eventually you must face the truth if you have the ability to recognize what that is. It all boils down to truth and facts. Not just your own facts but all of them. And then you must make the commitment to report them without the snide personal attacks and the holier than thou attitude. It is very uncomfortable to have to watch the news and commentary delivered in the manner in which you have chosen to give it. I am not alone in thinking this. Good luck to you.

It's no wonder the MSM hates capitalism..

The above posts are right, they put their idealogy before profits. From the 'Today' show, to Letterman to any program on MSNBC or CNN, they probably have more 'viewers' here at NBs than watch on air. They've got to know how much revenue they are losing. But they'd rather shove global warming and health care down our throats (obviously a losing battle) than put programs and people on the air that could/would compete with FNC.

Keith Olberrube, liar

No Phil, actually MSNBC is still the place for schlockitics....a place where a small, carved likeness of Obama, surrounded by candles and burning incense, is placed off camera and deferred to before, during and after the crockcast...where the reality of a vacuous and incompetent Obama administration is smugly spun by a vacuous and incompetent liar who long ago discarded any shred of personal integrity and self respect.  A mountebank who clearly believes that he must be smart because he can hold up some kind of diploma and other liars allow him to appear on television.  So this imbecile daily prostrates himself in submission to the totem, sets his large, highly polished backside in front of a camera and slobbers carefully scripted constructs and prevarications to the dwindling faithful.  Olberdork, you're a liar and I'd tell it to your face.

telecaster

Hear! Hear!

Get him the hell away from the NFL first

I don't care about what else he does. And neither does the vast majority of cable subscribers.

SICK OF LIBS...

What's funny is that the place Olby should be broadcasting for is Major League Baseball. Like the NFL, NHL, & NBA, they have their own broadcast operation, & that's where he should be. The guy knows baseball as well as anyone. He would actually be happy on the air talking about things he understands & likes. But he could'nt work there because he has so poisoned his name to the point many would object to his being there. Instead, he works politics, his show has devolved into him coming unhinged on a more then regular basis, & people are sick of it. He's stuck at BSNBC, since he's burned more then a few bridges over the years, he would have to hard time finding a primo gig if he gets the axe. Sucks to be him, & my message to him would be to save your money.

How do you stop a rapidly sinking ship, especially one built too big for its own good?

This ship is already sunk.

This ship is already sunk. Its more like trying to raise the Titanic.

You "stimulate" it

You don't. You abandon it,

You don't. You abandon it, clean up the mess as best one can and allow the wreckage to become good fishing grounds as it slowly becomes more reef-like.

Behind Nancy Grace!!??

So...Olberman's ratings are behind Nancy Grace?...did I read that correctly?  Ooh...that's gotta give new meaning to the phrase "my ratings are tanking..."   When you fall below Nancy Grace in the ratings battle, you have sunk low bubba.

No matter how hard they try

They can't polish the turd. And they'll keep trying until they flush it.

Look...

Before I even begin, my anti MSDNC and Olbs bonafides can be gleamed through my twitter - msdncteabaggers - and my as yet to ever catch on blog. That's fine, its still nice to rant there.

So as much as I would LOVE at least Fat Ass and Big Dead to get canned, it ain't gonna happen, even when Comcast takes over. First, Big Dead, is now on par with Wolf, many times beating him in the ratings. So right there's he's doing better then anyone else at the time slot... Think Muppet Mouth Shuster and or Tucker.

As for Fat Ass, why would they can him? His ratings might be down, but he's still the skinniest kid at fat camp (thank you Stewart) and to their absolute nightly joy, he still wins the fat legged race. And then Wesley Crusher at 9:PM wins a good bit of the time too, more so with Larry's reanimated corpse as her only real rival. (Sorry Joy)

So look, he can't scratch FNC's ass, literally, any of them. Even Huck on Saturday's and Sundays, even Glenns reruns on Sat afternoon and Hannity's reruns on Sat \ Sun night, they all beat him and Wes into the ground in both demos. But out of ALL of CNN, ALL of HLN, and the rest of MSDNC, their clear winners. (Save the times when Nancy comes close in the total demo and beats his face in in the demo, still not enough)

So in the end, it doesn't appear he'll ever leave except when he wants too. Comcast won't can him. Hell, they haven't gotten rid of friggin Zucker yet, and he's done more damage to the brand of NBC then Olbs, though Fat Ass is a close second.

Anyway, like a few other posters say, keep the inmates running the asylum so the stark contrast can be seen and demonstrated whenever needed.

He's nothing but a sock-puppet for the left but no one with intelligence is listening.

But really...like another poster said, you can't polish a turd, especially a really soft, runny one.

What truly worries me...

...after reading the screed on American Thinker (http://www.americanthinker.com/2010/02/the_fat_lady_sings_for_keith_o.ht...) that at some point, Keith Olbermann will decide it isn't worth it any more, and shoot himself in the head. Following an emergency board meeting at MSNBC, the sinking show hosted by Keith Olbermann is to be renamed.

With immediate effect, Countdown is to be called Ratingsdown.

Remember folks: weather is not climate. Unless it's a heatwave in summer; and then, weather "proves" global warming.

Time to Say "Goodnight, Keith"

MSNBC is indeed like the Titanic.  All it's cable news shows are tanking.  People are tired of the lies of Olbermann, Maddow, Matthews, etc.  It's taken over a decade, but people are finally beginning to realize that the mainstream media is indeed liberally biased - cable news especially!

We don't want to watch or listen anymore.  Sure, I like to hear the opposite side and see what they are saying.  But I cannot handle the overt hostility to anything conservative and especially Christian.  It's not just liberally biased, it is an out-and-out war on conservatism, Republicans and Christians.

MSNBC needs to go the way of Toyota - do a massive recall and replace Olbermann, Maddow, Matthews, etc. with people who will deliver the news with objectivity.
