"Not in sync with the current program" is how former CNN host Tucker Carlson describes his new website, the Daily Caller, which is scheduled to launch Monday. Designed as a conservative answer to the Huffington Post, the Daily Caller will do what few center-right blogs have attempted: report hard news.
Carlson and his partner, former Dick Cheney aide Neil Patel, have raised $3 million in startup capital for the site, according to the Washington Independent. That impressive sum is enough to keep the Daily Caller operating for about a year. The site will employ a reporting staff or 21 in its Washington, D.C. office.
With Andrew Breitbart's Big Journalism, which launched earlier this week, Carlson hopes to be on the cutting edge of a new effort on the right to circumvent major media outlets--and overcome the significant obstacles to conservative news of traditional media outlets.
Many commentators are confident in Carlson's abilities as a trailblazer, and the Daily Caller already has a number of features lined up. The Washington Independent reported,
Carlson and his staff are spending the final hours before the launch polishing off content that can break out of the gate — exclusive interviews, lists like the Top 15 Most Wasteful Stimulus Projects, and short features from think tankers and established politicos. Arianna Huffington will have one of the first pieces on the site. Carlson, who started his career as a magazine writer, is working on an investigative piece for later. When Carlson talked to TWI on Wednesday, he had a wallet full of business cards handed to him by excited political candidates, Tea Party activists and PR flacks who’d heard him speak at Grover Norquist’s weekly meetings of the conservative movement. It was the first time, said Carlson, that he’d ever gone to the meeting. He wanted as much news, and as many stories, as possible. Whether they came from ax-grinding researchers or established reporters didn’t much matter.“If there’s a story whose facts are verifiable, and it generates interest, and it comes from Satan himself, I will take it and I will pay him a reporting fee,” Carlson said. “But if we take a piece from Satan, that does not mean we’re on board with Satan’s agenda. It just means that the provenance of the piece, the origins of the piece, is not the most important thing. People don’t give you stuff because they love journalists. They give you that stuff because they’re pushing an agenda.”
The Daily Caller promises to be a vital part of the right's online presence. Though we at NewsBusters maintain the value of exposing liberal bias in the news media, alternative sources of news must be available to truly circumvent that bias.

Fri, 01/08/2010 - 14:03 ET by unkeeafCan't wait to see how the media rips this thing to shreds. They'll either completely ignore it - so as not to give it any publicity - or make it sound like something a couple of 3rd graders came up with.

Is Carlson A Conservative?
Fri, 01/08/2010 - 14:07 ET by SimJimI don't know much about the guy. Caught him a couple of times when he did the CNN gig. Seen him a few times since on Fox News shows. Seems to me he isn't consistently conservative, but maybe I caught him on off days. He strikes me as a Joe Scarborough type. Am I wrong?

Fri, 01/08/2010 - 15:16 ET by Jerry MackJoe Scarborough is a good comparison. Tucker has had 3 failed cable shows. The NB plug will give me reason to give his website a chance. But I will continue to use this website as my #1 choice.
Thanks for the insight Jerry.
Fri, 01/08/2010 - 15:25 ET by SimJimNB seems to be giving him an endorsement. Hopefully if his news site turns out to be another liberal front thinly disguised as conservative, NB will point out the bias similar to their monitoring of Morning Joe. No free passes for anyone spouting liberal propaganda.

Insider Wannabe
Fri, 01/08/2010 - 15:28 ET by CaringwhiteguyI think "insider wannabe" is a good description for Tucker. This puts him in the same genre as Scarborough. Both tend to blow with the current winds, much like Captain Renault in Casablanca: "I go with the wind, and right now, the prevailing wind blows from Vichy. ...
With the strong re-emergence of conservatism, Tucker might find it helpful to stay a bit more on the straight and narrow. However, his taste and style are too "inside the beltway" and not enough "from the heartland" for me. Very smart, but too much Bill Kristol and too little Rush Limbaugh.

I'll give both sites a look.
Fri, 01/08/2010 - 22:22 ET by MozillaI'll give both new sites a look. That being The Daily Caller and Big Journalism and then I will make up my mind if I like them.
I get why Andrew Breitbart has expanded his franchise blogs. First the hollywood stars coming out for democrats were all the rage..hence he created Big Hollywood to expose them. Then he wanted to expose Acorn and other forms of corruption thus Big Government. Now he has been unhappy with the media reaction to Acorn tapes so Big Journalism. He is pretty good. One of the best guests on tv's Hannity and on other Fox News Shows. But, Newsbusters is equally good at what it does and that is why I trust it.
Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson is a Republican. That much I know, but not sure on where he stands on certain issues. He had an MSNBC show after CNN dumped him and ended Crossfire. The MSNBC show went through various phases. The show as I recall reading about it on media websites and blogs was moved from New York City to D.C. at the end and switched time slots from afternoons to late at night after pimetime before it went back to daylight.
Still, I never watched it. But I guess Tucker must have first hand accounts about how bad MSNBC has gotten, as they headed lefter and lefter every year, like John Gibson and Don Imus do on their radio shows. So I'll give it a try. I know from a quick google search the site has been in the works since at least the time Tucker was fired off MSNBC. And also it has a reporter from the Washington Times on the staff.
But, I hardly agree if ever with both Pat Buchanan or that Joe guy left at MSNBC so if anything I can make my voice heard if I disagree at the new site. As for now, I have to see it first. I have as much issues with John McCain type Republicans as I do with Democrats.
I mainly hang out at Free Republic, here at Newsbusters, and Fox Nation plus a board site called Nobama, which I ran into in 2008 and Conservatives4Palin blog. I also read other Conservative sites like Hot Air or Newsmax or media sites like Tvweek and Tvnewser, although I got banned from posting comments at Tvnewser.
Plus, ocassionally I read Rush Limbaugh's transcripts and Hannity's forums or Glenn Beck's transcripts. So I go to a few places.
