Did Lou Dobbs's Conservative Views Cause Him to Leave CNN?

  • Bookmark and Share

Lou Dobbs left CNN after years of tensions between him and the network's brass, who consistently objected to his outspoken, often controversial reports. But the issues that seem to have annoyed CNN execs most were ones on which Dobbs took a conservative stance.

The New York Times reported Wednesday that CNN President Jonathan Klein offered Dobbs an ultimatum a few months ago: "Mr. Dobbs could vent his opinions on radio and anchor an objective newscast on television, or he could leave CNN." Klein reportedly complained about Dobbs's reporting on the Birther movement over the summer, and his outspoken opposition to illegal immigration.

According to the New York Post, one "TV insider" said Dobbs was "polluting the CNN brand" of purported political objectivity. Klein issued a statement saying Dobbs had decided to "carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere."

Dobbs held liberal sentiments on a number of issues, but these did not spark the controversy and CNN infighting that his conservative views did. In discussing why Dobbs would leave CNN, media commentators note that CNN is trying to position itself as the non-opinionated network, and Dobbs did not fit the mold.

But pundits cite only his conservative views in discussing tensions with the higher-ups at the network. Neither of the aforementioned articles from the Times and the Post mention Dobbs's liberal views.

In 2006, as reported by Ken Shepherd Thursday, Dobbs came out in support of Democrats' health care reform plans. Dobbs said at the time,

We can talk about national health care, universal health care coverage call it what you want to, but this country has a responsibility to all the people in this room and Americans, all but the very poor and the very rich, are the ones being hammered because there is no program for the middle-class.

Dobbs, in a stunning show of liberalism, faulted capitalism with problems in the health care sector. "[T]he federal government is saying we’ve got to have these laissez-faire capitalist policies because we want to be competitive," he lamented. Dobbs attributed high health care prices to increases in outsourcing.

Dobbs's distaste for outsourcing aligned quite well with criticisms of corporate America from Democrats. Then-presidential candidate John Kerry notoriously dubbed "Benedict Arnold CEOs" those executives who shipped jobs overseas. Dobbs echoed Kerry's indictment, stating

The idea that corporate America can continue the business practice of outsourcing jobs, good paying American jobs, overseas to cheap labor markets, many times offsetting a job that pays $15 to $20 an hour, perhaps more, and replaces it with a job overseas paying about $0.42 an hour, let’s say, for example, I don’t know what it’s going to take for corporate America to find a conscience.

Health care and employment are both high-profile national issues, and Dobbs touted the liberal line on both, making some controversial statements on the issues.

CNN claims that it is trying to take a "middle of the road" approach to reporting, replacing Dobbs with veteran Washington correspondent John King. Objections to Dobbs's reporting from CNN's corporate officers only seemed to come in response to his conservative views.

I don't know if Dobbs is

I don't know if Dobbs is conservative or what, but we at least know he's not a dishonest party propagandist like 99% of his MSM colleagues....maybe he just got sick of rubbing shoulders with slimebags day in and day out.

Usually when a resignation

is this sudden it is under the duress of "resign or be fired". I suspect Dobbs chose resignation. The "resignation" was probably in response to this: 'Obama excoriates Obama...'.

"Somehow, I told you so, just doesn't quite say it." Will Smith in 'I, Robot.'

Too Much

The test for anyone with American values and a solid appreciation for the Constitution is how long they can stand the stench called CNN. Lou took it for as long as he could and rather than compromise his values under the network's threats of demotion and constant badgering on his personal views, Constitutionally protected as they might be, he decided enough was enough.  This is probably the single biggest indication that CNN is so far removed from delivering news without bias as you can get, and they don't even see it yet.  In their stupidity, liberals are claiming victory.  If they were really as smart as they will tell you they are...they would be dangerous.  As it is they're simply irritants that need to be removed...one by one.

I saw this recent press release regarding Dobbs

CNN May Restore Journalistic Integrity with Departure of TV Anchor Lou Dobbs, According to Latino Policy Coalition

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Latino Policy Coalition (LPC) congratulates Presente.org along with the more than 40 local and regional civil rights organizations that have succeeded in their efforts to draw national attention to CNN Anchor Lou Dobbs' anti-immigrant news program, and thus ultimately end his slanted commentary show on CNN.

"In accepting Lou Dobbs' resignation, CNN may finally restore its journalistic integrity," said LPC Chair Jim Gonzalez.

Lou Dobbs' xenophobic statements fuel hate crimes incidents in Latino communities. Dobbs wrongly portrayed immigrants as criminals, job stealers, and disease carriers who unduly burden America's social welfare system.

"The ouster of Lou Dobbs from CNN reaffirms that what we witnessed with Justice Sonia Sotomayor's successful confirmation. Latinos in the U.S. are connecting with their political power and will not support racial profiling or discrimination, but instead, are invested in just treatment for all and sound immigration reform," Gonzalez concluded.

Correction

Dobbs wrongly portrayed immigrants as criminals, job stealers, and disease carriers who unduly burden America's social welfare system.

Correcton:  ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS are job stealers, disease carriers, and unduly burden our social welfare system.  The very nature of being here illegally makes them criminals.  Don't get it twisted.  Tell it exactly as it is.

Illegal Immigrants

IF the Law were actually enforced as written, EVERY illegal alien caught working in the US would be convicted and sentenced from 5 to 15 years.  They aren't doing so any more than they were supposed to enforce the border.  Any idea that an inept and incompetent government would enforce strong provisions for a pathway to citizenship are equally laughable and specious.  Credibility is earned by consistent action, not created by empty rhetoric and unrealistic promises.

Before any talk of citizenship is even entertained, finish building the fence as promised, enforce the existing laws as sworn by their oath of office and deport EVERY illegal alien that is in our jails and prisons including EVERY last one of them the police come across in the course of routine calls such as traffic stops (where most outstanding warrants for arrest are executed).  Anything less than this means the government has ZERO credibility on any new laws.   Based on Janet Nepolitano's stated policy for the DHS there is no expectation any of this will be done and the proposed law will only be manipulated to expedite new voters for the Democrat party.

Read dry, blandly delivered liberal bias - with lots of liberal guests.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals

Anderson "Tea Bagger" Cooper

Anderson "tea bagger" Cooper, or Wolf "Situation Room" Blizter are out there on the left lane of the road.

Obvsiously the Dobbs ulltimatum worked with Larry King who has towed the leftist line after years of softball interviews.

Well, the middle of the far

Well, the middle of the far left shoulder of the road maybe.

But watch out for those big rocks in the barrow ditch.

Oh, you mean they want to

Oh, you mean they want to be like MSNBC.

CNN, the Clinton News Network---Bill decides; Hill reports

(I may need to modify that, but I think I'll wait till '12.)

Duh!

Sigh!

Lou Strikes Back!

Maybe Lou left CNN because he wanted to work on a station that actually got viewers!!! Can you say ZING? Check out this hilarious write up on liberals its awesome! click here http://thedailyzing.com/334/7-habits-of-highly-defective-liberals/

CNN objective? Isn't that

CNN objective? Isn't that the station with that Sanchez cat, or is he not there anymore? I don't know, I don't watch it.

I also don't understand why people get on Dobbs about being outspoken about illegal immigration. Hello, there's a reason that it's called by that name! Libs out there, say it with me:

I-L-L-E-G-A-L, you know, like when you stage a protest but don't get a proper permit from the city and impede traffic, flip dumpsters, etc., then get arrested, and claim that the police are SO EVIL.

I could see CNN wanting Lou to play more of a reporting role, but he's been talking about illegal immigration and securing our borders for a LONG time now. Also, his exit speech sounded like they wanted him to pander for the White House, at least that's what I got out of this, "... urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN, and to engage in constructive problem-solving, as well as to contribute positively to a better understanding of our issues today."

Think CNN's ratings are bad now?

Dobb's was the only reason for most people to even tune in to CNN (since Shep Smith's show is so weak).

Without Dobbs, CNN is going to hit bottom exponentially faster.

Can anyone think of any other host or show on CNN that they would look forward to listening too and watching? Me neither. John King is a decent journalist...I like Wolf Blitzer. But do they make me want to tune into CNN? Nah.

Give Dobbs Shep Smith's 7 P.M. slot on Fox, since Smith is the only hole in Fox's line-up.

Yep, you can count me in as

Yep, you can count me in as one of the folks that only tuned into CNN for Dobbs. That's every now-and-then, at that.

CNN's " objectivity "

CNN's political objectivity? When did CNN become objective? When did John King become objective? All Mr. Dobbs did, in my opinion, was provide the other side of the news, since CNN and most of the rest of the lamestream media are of a liberal bent. Some moderately so, and some more virulently. If you only get one side of the story, that's all you get.

Dobbs is No Conservative

Dobbs supports Affirmative Action. Tell me how that's Conservative.

Middle of the road?

I have difficulty believing that they are middle of the road when I see Wolfie, The Forehead, Donna (The Liar ) Brazille and Borger discussing what the Republicans need to do to win elections.

Note: During the 2000 Florida recount Brazille said for 2 weeks on Cnn that her sister had not been allowed to vote in Florida. The fact was that her sister had received an absentee ballot and had forgotten to mail it. After the recount was over and due to public pressure she admitted that it was her sisters fault but never apoligized.

Prison shows

Wherever Mr. Dobbs ends up ....FNC or other...I will be there to take it
all in.

He is a fine journalist.

Getting out of the communist news network was the best thing for him.

Just like msnbc...pretty soon cnn will be running gay prison shows nightly
as well.
