NBC's Brian Williams Accuses Fox News of 'Jingoism' for Criticizing U.S. Olympic Uniforms

By Kyle Drennen | July 13, 2012 | 16:39

In a nasty rant at the end of Thursday's Rock Center on NBC, Nightly News anchor Brian Williams slammed the hosts of FNC's morning show for daring to criticize the uniforms for the U.S. Olympic team: "Trouble on Fox & Friends. It started when the morning show crew mocked the new Ralph Lauren outfits...." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

After playing a clip of Gretchen Carlson being critical of berets being part of the uniform, Williams sneered: "The jingoism continued. Another host wondered why they couldn't wear something more American, like baseball caps or cowboy hats. Until the viewer e-mails started pouring in, reminding them some real Americans, U.S. soldiers, are issued berets."

Williams was apparently so upset that anyone would say a bad word about the Olympics – which just last year NBC paid $4.38 billion to gain the broadcast rights to until 2020 – that he even went so far as to lash out at Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday's Nightly News.

Reid declared that "the Olympic Committee should be ashamed of themselves" and should "take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile, and burn them" after the revelation that they were made in China. Following that sound bite, Williams remarked: "Are there better things for the Senate to worry about, like legislation?"

NBC's Today on Tuesday brought on Ralph Lauren's David Lauren to unveil the new uniforms and even gave co-host Savannah Guthrie, news reader Natalie Morales, and weatherman Al Roker each a Team USA beret to wear. None of the supposed journalists were enterprising enough to notice the uniform labels that clearly read "made in China."

Here is a transcript of Williams's July 12 anti-Fox outburst:

10:56PM ET

(...)

BRIAN WILLIAMS: Trouble on Fox & Friends. It started when the morning show crew mocked the new Ralph Lauren outfits for the U.S. Olympic team in London.

GRETCHEN CARLSON: I mean, is this the new American trend now?

CLAYTON MORRIS: Wearing a beret?

CARLSON: Are we going to be seeing berets? And you have to pronounce it that way too, because that's the French way.

WILLIAMS: The jingoism continued. Another host wondered why they couldn't wear something more American, like baseball caps or cowboy hats. Until the viewer e-mails started pouring in, reminding them some real Americans, U.S. soldiers, are issued berets. Pronounced the French way. The uniforms came under more fire today when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was asked about the fact that they are made in China.

HARRY REID: I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile, and burn them and start all over again.

If Fox News is jingoistic, then Reid and Schumer must be as well.

Olympic uniforms are Obama's shiny objects (look at THIS, not my crummy record).....while F&F is an important issue that falls squarely in O's basket of responsibility (Blame Bush!!!!)....therefore the media wants nothing to do with it.

See how that works?

Many Americans don't connect the murders facilitated by Obama's 2nd Amendment play with the drug cartels (Mexicans killing Mexicans), and the murders spreading through the streets of Chicago (Blacks killing Blacks).

Many Americans like to watch. Many Americans are liberals.

So, do you support Eric Holder's facilitation of the murders of more than 200 Mexicans?

Or is complicity in murder a real issue, one of those things about which you don't give a $hit?

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 07/13/2012 - 8:49pm.

They are stupid looking outfits, regardless of where they were made. Who 'designed' these things - Dan Savage and Rachael Maddoff??? And how the hell do anti-American morons like Chuck U. Schoomah and Harry the Weasel Reid end up trying to sound like real 'patriots' by condemning the fact that they were made in China??? These guys have done more damage to our country than China has, to the best of my knowledge. And where is the garmet industry and unions on this one??? They should be screaming bloody murder for this travesty against their own 'made in America' brand.

And, of course, ANY news is better than discussing the economy, or the continued assault on American, by Boy Baraka.

I truly would have preferred a Stetson to the silly berets....everyone in the whole world identifies the cowboy hat as being from America. Actually, the rest of the outfit is okay....and probably good for the London weather. I am a yuppy at heart and have a closet full of Ralph Lauren's clothes.

Trivia Fact.....George W. Bush's niece, Lauren Bush, married Ralph Lauren's son....she is now Lauren Lauren. No, I'm not making that up.

Although Canada has adopted our cowboy hats as official headgear, they gave them to Kate & Wills on their tour last summer. Red ones. Maybe that's only in Alberta?

Perhaps we should have gone with some cool Panama Hats for the summer games (although the good ones come from Ecuador).

Hahahahaha!!! So I wouldn't know a Ralph Lauren from a Ralph Cramden!!! I think the damn things look like they outta be worn by some gay cabin boys on Bawney Fwanks yacht!!! What's with the blazers and white pants?? What kind of man wears white pants??? And the only time a beret looks good on a real man is if he's a SEAL or a Ranger or some kind of Commando.

I dunno, Blonde - I know that they're supposed to have some kind of 'homogenious' look............I just think it's a little too 'homo' and not enough 'genius', I guess. What the hell is wrong with the men looking like men, and the women looking like women.
Why does it have to be some 'unisex' deal???

Submitted by killa37 on Sat, 07/14/2012 - 12:32am.

Except, Dave, that China has a growing and expanding economy - and encourages it - as well as a growing middle class. We have just the opposite on both accounts. And they also pay VERY close attention to their borders - they don't have an 'illegal immigration' problem. And those trouble making mooooooooooooooooslems out in the western provinces??? They get dealt with in a way that doesn't encourage them to continue stirring things up.

Plus, Boy Baraka is considered to be pretty much of an 'amateur' to the REAL commies over there - I had to laugh when he said he'd like to be President of China!!! The guy wouldn't have lasted a week, and he wouldn't be around to make excuses for his abysmal performance either. He'd be back to where he started - the Manchurian EX-Candidate.

Slow news day of Fox and Friends.

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 07/14/2012 - 11:53am.

It must have been a slow news day on Fox and Friends. Complaining about the Olympic parade uniforms? Can you get any more irrelevant than that? After the Olympics are over, who's going to care, other than NBC?

As silly as it is that Fox and Friends, or anyone else, for that matter, is complaining about something as irrelevant as the Olympic parade uniforms, it's even funnier that NBC is complaining about Fox and Friends' complaints. It's as if kindergarten has recessed and the kids are fighting on the playground.
