NBC's Star Jones Rants: Okay 'Rich White Guy' Zuckerberg Wears Hoodie, But 'Ghetto' For Trayvon Martin

In a bizarre attempt to make Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg wearing a hoodie at a recent Wall Street meeting into a racial issue, on Thursday's NBC Today, attorney and panelist Star Jones decried the supposed "hypocrisy" of it all: "...when we talk about Mark Zuckerberg, rich white guy, wearing a hoodie, we call him brainy and self-confident....But when a young black kid walks down the street in a hoodie, that's ghetto." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

Moments later, she made it clear that she was referring to Florida teen shooting victim Trayvon Martin: "...what I'm saying to you is, is you're having a discussion about an article of clothing where two months ago, that article of clothing was looked at as negative."

Even fellow liberal panelists, advertising executive Donny Deutsch and NBC medical editor Nancy Snyderman, thought Jones was completely off-base. Deutsch immediately dismissed her assertions: "Whoa, whoa....Okay, first of all, I don't know why this is a black/white issue....I love you like a sister, but you do this a lot....this is not a racial issue." Jones declared: "...don't interrupt me about an issue that means something to me and to the rest of the world."

Deutsch was probably referring to a May 2 panel discussion with Jones, in which she claimed that an ad by conservative PAC Crossroads GPS attacking President Obama for being a celebrity was somehow racially motivated: "...what worries me is that it's another attempt to paint Obama as an 'other.'" Deutsch countered: "I hope this is not a black/white issue....Star, you're misreading."

On Thursday, Snyderman joined Deutsch in criticizing Jones: "Star, you're – you're whacked out right now." Jones shot back: "No, you're not – you're just not living in the truth. There's a difference."

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: Let's move on to Mark Zuckerberg, speaking of sweating, sweatshirt, hoodie, thanks for the segue. So here he is, this is the big week of the Facebook Initial Public Offering. He goes to Wall Street, meets with these high rollers, these big investors, and he's wearing his uniform, the hoodie and jeans.

NANCY SNYDERMAN: Who cares?

GUTHRIE: I'm going to start with our branding guy. I know it's his brand, but should he have worn something more suited to the occasion?

DONNY DEUTSCH: First of all, it wouldn't have made a difference. Second of all, no. That you just said it, it's his brand. It's Steve Jobs and the black – the whole Facebook essence is, "We are this exclusive billion-person club that's thumbing our nose at the rest of the world." If all of a sudden he showed up in a suit and tie, you go, 'What? This is not Facebook.' They would lose the patina of, 'We are something special.' So I actually think, although I find him incredibly annoying, I just – something about him, I just want to go like this to his nose, I don't-

GUTHRIE: Okay, alright.

NANCY SNYDERMAN: He did put on a sport coat when he met the President in a private setting.

DEUTSCH: Right.

SNYDERMAN: And he was basically told to because, you know, that's out of respect of the office of the presidency. But having lived in that part of California, there is this feeling that, you know, you east-coasters do whatever you want, but guess what? We're making things happen out here and we are the nonconformists.

GUTHRIE: Can you be true to you're brand, but occasionally know that a situation requires something?

STAR JONES: Wait, Savannah, do you even see the hypocrisy here? That when we talk about Mark Zuckerberg, rich white guy...

DEUTSCH: Oh, no.

JONES: ...wearing a hoodie, we call him brainy and self-confident. And he's the man making things happen. But when a young black kid walks down the street in a hoodie, that's ghetto. That's urban.

DEUTSCH: Whoa, whoa, okay.

JONES: That's negative. I just find it very interesting. Sorry.

DEUTSCH: Okay, first of all, I don't know why this is a black/white issue.

JONES: It's not.

DEUTSCH: You do – no, you do – I love you like a sister, but you do this a lot.

JONES: And you know what?

DEUTSCH: By the way, we're putting him down for wear-

JONES: No, no. You don't – don't interrupt me about an issue that means something to me and to the rest of the world.

DEUTSCH: But this is not a racial issue.

JONES: But what I'm saying to you is, is you're having a discussion about an article of clothing where two months ago, that article of clothing was looked at as negative. Think about it for a minute, Donny.

DEUTSCH: But we're looking at it as negative here for a different reason.

JONES: No, but you're not looking at it-

DEUTSCH: It's not like, "Oh, he's great because of a hoodie and the other guy's a criminal."

JONES: Excuse me, I read the New York Times, they called him brainy and self-confident.

SNYDERMAN: Yeah, but Star it's still-

JONES: And that's what that whole Silicon Valley thing is about.

DEUTSCH: Oh, come on, Star. Come on.

SNYDERMAN: Star, you're – you're whacked out right now.

JONES: No, you're not – you're just not living in the truth. There's a difference.

GUTHRIE: Well, let me throw something else at you really quick. Let's do it on the basis of gender. What if a woman's brand was to wear a certain kind of clothing, maybe hot pants for all I know, and she goes and takes meetings on Wall Street.

DEUTSCH: Now we're talking.

JONES: Of course.

GUTHRIE: Now Donny's interested. But, I mean, do you think there would be a double standard there?

SNYDERMAN: Of course there's a double standard.

JONES: Of course there's a double standard.

SNYDERMAN: Do you see – how do you think Sheryl Sandberg's going to dress on Friday? She's going to dress like the adult in the room. And she'll be there on time and he'll be late.

DEUTSCH: Personal experience-

SNYDERMAN: And guess what? They're going to go ahead and be phenomenally successful.

JONES: And he's going to get paid.

Um, Star, maybe it's "ghetto"

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 1:13pm.

Um, Star, maybe it's "ghetto" because blacks MADE it so, and made it their trademark. Proudly.

On another occasion you would be bragging about how a fad that started in the ghetto had gone "mainstream."

At least people are calling

Submitted by LinTaylor on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 1:13pm.

At least people are calling her on this kind of garbage.

Also, when did anyone ever suggest that Zuckerberg was a great person BECAUSE of his hoodie?

And further, hasn't that particular article of clothing had a negative reputation for years, thanks to people like the Unabomber and various school shooters?

Come on now, everyone knows

Submitted by John21 on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 1:16pm.

Come on now, everyone knows that Star Jones has been trying to build her rep so she can break into the big leagues of the "Race Pimps", she is auditioning as the replacement for either Rev Al or Rev Jesse which ever she can get to die first.

She has the same limited mentality and total lack of morality as the leading "Race Pimps" in the country. Her credibility is in the same "brown smelly stuff" as theirs and no one expect her to ever speak the truth.

Go girl, You can be the first female "Race Pimp" in the country. your Mama will be so proud

OK Star, St. Skittles was also brainy and self-confident. Happy?

Submitted by SickofLibs on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 1:21pm.

PS, I would bet that 9 out of 10 of all people in the US own at least one hoodie.

In fact, that's pretty much all I wear in the winter, and I've never once been accosted by a community watchman for slinking around my neighborhood at night.

Nancy Snyderman is NOT "non-conformist" or "getting things done"

Submitted by drsamherman on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 1:23pm.

at all.

She is a cookie-cutter liberal Democrat who is acting like everyone who practices medicine agrees with her snotty behavior and her half-wit liberal ideology. She so conforms to the median (statistical terms) hysterical liberal that she could serve as the mold. As for getting anything done, I have yet to see any of her diatribe punctuated with action towards anything but pimping our profession for Ear Leader. For the last time, Nance, SHUT YOUR TRAP and go back to doing nose jobs.

Star is ghetto. Her victimization fixation and her racist obsessions certainly don't say anything but.

Donny is dimbulb trustafarian who would not know real work if it smacked him across the face and told him to get the lead out and get the work done.

Savannah Guthrie? Just another empty CNN talking head who could not breathe unless somebody gave her the directive into her ear piece.

Is this seriously considered

Submitted by HypocriteHater on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 1:26pm.

Is this seriously considered entertainment for people? Having a panel discussion about what Mark Zuckerberg was wearing at Wall Street? Seriously??

I'm surprised E! wasn't there asking Mark "who are you wearing?".

Stars Credibility

This is an example of why these liberal networks are loosing viewers. Who in their right mind would consider Star Jones' comment on anything to be worth listening to. She is ... a ... how you say? Media Ho!

Topic?

Submitted by feisty on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 3:56pm.

Was that the topic or did Jones go off on one of those racial tangents and change the subject? Were they talking about Zuckerberg and they she says, "Oh, by the way, how come when he wears a hoodie....yada yada..." Stay on topic, sweetie.

Star. One Question?

Submitted by Blue_Turf on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 4:16pm.

When was the last time a black man in a 'Hoodie' created a multi-billion dollar company with nine hundred million subscribers? They can't, you know why? Because of people like you, Sharpton, Jackson, and Ferret Kahn.

➚ 50 Cent

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 4:21pm.

50 Cent made a bunch of millions off of Vitamin Water.

But I think that was a result of him being paid in stock for his endorsement.

Still, great gig if you can get it.
