MSNBC's Toure Labels Disco Critics 'Homophobic' and 'Racist'
Appearing on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports on Thursday to discuss the passing of disco singer Donna Summer, contributor Toure unleashed a viscous rant against those who didn't care for the music genre: "...there was a homophobic, and to a certain extent racist, response against disco....from large group of fans who wanted to proclaim the resurgence of white male power, of rock 'n roll and punk..." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]
Toure began launching his absurd attack by cheering disco as "all about gay exuberance and joy." He then condemned those who criticized it: "I have never seen a movement in America to crush a musical genre in the way that the sort of almost organized anti-disco movement rose up....it reminds me of the discussion around marriage equality, that, 'You can't have this for yourself, you can't have equality, you can't be out and normalized in the public. You must be in the closest and quiet about what you love.'"
Mitchell only gently questioned his assertions: "So you think that disco ended because of sort of a political reaction within the music industry, rather than an evolution into hip-hop, rap, and the other forms of music that succeeded it?" Toure replied: "I think that's absolutely right....almost again, sort of a systematic, like, 'We're going to attack disco and push it back into the closet'....it was really sort of like, 'Let's return the power to the white men behind rock 'n roll,' sort of thing."
Here is full transcript of the May 17 segment:
1:13PM ET
ANDREA MITCHELL: And now we move on to a sad loss. The world of disco has lost its queen, Donna Summer has died in Florida, reportedly after a long battle with cancer. She was 63 years old. Toure is an MSNBC contributor. Toure, talk about her importance, her role, disco and what she meant to people with all of her Grammys and her incredible sales.
TOURE: I mean, Donna Summer had a big lush beautiful voice, she was there at the beginning of disco, one of the people who helped disco rise into prominence. Sort of a New York and Philadelphia thing that became a global phenomenon. And you know, she had an incredible song called, "Love to Love You Baby," which played for 17 minutes in the real true long version that they played in the clubs. And she approached it as if, she said, "What would Marilyn Monroe do with this vocal?" And she cooed and she sort of moaned, and you know, in some clubs, in some radio stations they were afraid to play it because it was too suggestive and too sexual. But that was the nature of disco, that was the nature of the times.
And it's sort of interesting to approach this story at this moment in politics, because of course she's the queen of disco, and disco was all about gay exuberance and joy and having this culture that was sort of centered around that sort of cultural energy that they were all about. And you know, I have never seen a movement in America to crush a musical genre in the way that the sort of almost organized anti-disco movement rose up. And people wearing "Death to Disco" t-shirts and really an attack on what Donna Summer and others were doing. And, you know, it was almost like, you know, "Get back in the closet, you can't have something for yourself." And it was – it reminds me of the discussion around marriage equality, that, "You can't have this for yourself, you can't have equality, you can't be out and normalized in the public. You must be in the closest and quiet about what you love."
MITCHELL: So you think that disco ended because of sort of a political reaction within the music industry, rather than an evolution into hip-hop, rap, and the other forms of music that succeeded it?
TOURE: I think that's absolutely right. That there was a homophobic, and to a certain extent racist, response against disco, largely not just from the music industry, but from large group of fans who wanted to proclaim the resurgence of white male power, of rock 'n roll and punk, almost again, sort of a systematic, like, "We're going to attack disco and push it back into the closet." What hip-hop did, it just started to rise up in the wake of disco, and wouldn't become a national phenomenon for several years later. So it was really sort of like, "Let's return the power to the white men behind rock 'n roll," sort of thing.
MITCHELL: And who did she influence most greatly? Which singers, male or female, who really came behind her?
TOURE: Well, when I think about it, you know, so many of the R & B singers who came after her, you know, there's definitely a debt to Donna Summer. I mean, they – we all listened to those records and that, you know as I said, that lush way of singing, that big voice, operatic almost. You know, and the joy that you heard in her songs, not just "Love to Love You Baby," but "McArthur Park" and "Heaven Knows," and you know, some of the other things, and I mean, just a really extraordinary voice.
MITCHELL: Well, she has lost that battle with cancer, but thank you for helping us remember her. Thank you, Toure.
TOURE: Thank you.

No music genre was as quickly and widely opposed as disco? Is this guy nuts? The opposition to rap was much more vocal and broad than any opposition to disco. Remember Tipper Gore and the outrage over 2 Live Crew and all the others? That was about misogynistic, violent lyrics, not mirror balls and glitter trippers.
John Travolta wouldn't be where he is today (well, mostly) if it wasn't for a TV sitcom and Saturday Night Fever. The Gibbs Brothers (not Robert or Leroy Jethro)? No career without disco.
So, the ongoing meme for the rest of the year is racist-gayist right wing haters. You know, Romneyites, people of Denny's.

This thread is not about a brave woman who fought a long and losing battle with cancer. This isn't about her music. People like certain kinds of music, books, art, movies. She was a popular artist among one of those groups. This article is about divisiveness, anger, hatred, bigotry and an often occuring sad event turned into a political agenda.
I never liked disco nor was I fond of hard metal. To me, they were both just noise. The choices we make in food, music or other genre's is once again being portrayed as racist because that is the current theme. Black Liberation theology is trying to find a platform now that a black is President. They should be called out for the traitorous hate filled antagonists that they really are rather than the media find ways to defend their hatefilled rhetoric. It's the same as the media finding excuses to hide the murder of Christians in Nigeria, Congo, and Egypt by blaming the US for all the troubles in the middle east. Blame the US, blame whites, blame the rich for all our wordly troubles. And now it's white Americans once again who didn't like a black woman's music that makes our country so evil.
How these idiots make these ridiculous connections is beyond my thinking. But I offer an excuse. I grew up in the 50's and 60's when there was real music....;-)

The way I heard about this event was in 1994, when the Dodgers forfeited a game to St. Louis after fans kept throwing balls on the field during a game. At that point the last game forfeited in the majors was the Disco Demolition Night.
The concept was awesome. Poorly executed though. The people behind it had to know things could get out of hand (and they did).

It took me years to realize that those were actual lyrics in that song. A friend of my sung them once (well, spoke, for they're not actually sung) and, wow, it suddenly made sense! Prior to that, the only part i could evr make out was "once of these days..." After that it was all gibberish.

Sorry, I just cannot understand the fascination with Tull.
Now, Fleetwood Mac, on the other hand, is ingrained in my brain. Blame Unsane's mom. She played Mirage NONSTOP when that album came out to the point where I was recalling "Gypsy" with crystal clarity in my second grade class.
Unsane's mom likewise spun Rumours over and over again on the turntable. I think I knew everything about the album, save the lineup of the band, by the time I turned 5. Not that it's a bad thing; Rumours is a classic. But just to give you an idea of the home I was brought up in.

I think I "discovered" Heroes Are Hard To Find first and then found Bare Trees and Mystery To Me.. Heroes was the last of the Bob Welch albums before he left to make some hits of his own and Buckingham and Nicks then came on board. Also, Heroes had Sneaky Pete Kleinow on pedal steel. Tasty. Since we're not talking Country Rock, I'll save those bands for a different day.

I guess I'll have to toss every CD of black music I have in the garbage can because I'm told I'm a racist and homophobe since I never liked disco. Into the garbage go my Temptations, Four Tops, Supremes, Ojays, Spinners, Sly & the Family Stone and War CDs. The most difficult to part with will be my Bob Marley greatest hits, since I consider him to be one of the top musical geniuses of the 20th century. I guess my jazz CDs by black artists will have to follow. Thelonius Monk, Oscar Peterson, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly. Probably should chuck my Latino and Tejano music as well, just to be safe. And definitely my Queen and Judas Priest CDs, because I'm homophobic. My Jethro Tull CDs should probably go, since one of their band members is now a transsexual. Tourettes tells me I'm racist, so who am I to argue. I can only listen to music made by straight white guys from now on. I'll have to go through every one of my 1,000 CDs and make sure every one does not feature a minority or LGBT on it. Got a lot of work to do tonight. I hope I have something left to listen to

First of all, disco never died. It lost it's place at the top of the charts because it was played everywhere, all the time, non-stop, oversold, with nothing else getting in a word edgewise. No music genre can last in that state. The American music listening public is a fickle bunch and their tastes moved on. There was a second British invasion, new wave, that the American public glommed onto. It was cool. It had a beat. It was new. That is where the new in new wave came from.
Second of all, disco never died. It just exploded into a hundred different genres. House. Trance. Euro-trance. Italo disco, Eurodisco, Space disco, Disco polo, Nu-Disco. Fusion. Disco-punk. Manila Sound. Acid house. Ambient house. Balearic bea.t Diva house. Microhouse. Pop house. Progressive house. Electroswing Dream house. Tribal house. Disco house. Electro house. Vocal house. Hardbag. French house. Alternative dance. Ambient house. Deep house. Funky house. Electronic rock. Ghetto house. Hip house. Latin house. Liquid funk. Neo Soul. Detroit Techno. Tech house Eurodance.
Third of all, disco never died. It warped and split into genres that were just as good if not better. And loved by the public just as much. Dance pop. New Jack Swing. Tell people that Madonna and Rick Astley, Bananarama, and others did not have a beat your could dance to. And more importantly, if you say the most influential man in music of the last 50 years, Bobby Friggin' Brown, and his New Jack sound was not the greatest gift to mankind, in the presence of a large crowd, you may get very badly hurt my friend.
And finally, disco never died. It just got embarrased by the globules that thought they could make a buck off of it despite having no musical talent. Disco looked at the mess that was "Disco Duck" and moved to Italy for a while.
Oh and PS:

Disco was gay? Funny no one mentioned this back in the '70s. This might be another reason America is so turned off by the gay movement with their perpetual grievances. This is the most self centered bunch of people this planet has ever seen.
Now gays may have been attracted to the Disco/Dance scene. They may have even thrown their hat in the ring with their own group, the Village People, but for the love of Gawd, they did not own an entire music genre. Wait. Wait. We can give them Broadway Show Tunes. No, on second thought, no, they can't have that either.

Roller disco! HA HA HA HA HA! Now THAT was gay! Didn't they cover that in The 70's Show?
By the way, bouncing and the Walkman didn't really complement each other. I never knew, before I bought my first Walkman, that cassette tapes could actually skip! I though it was a physical impossibility. Leave it to the Japanese to prove me wrong.

If disco was gay, then glam rock AKA hair metal was uber swishy gay. Did you see the bands? Make-up. Teased hair. Tights. Lawd Almighty.
And don't get me started on Wham. Did you see George Michael in those shorts? Oh, and songs like " I'm Your Man" and "Father Figure" Sheesh. Yeah, technically, it was not a music genre. Hey, what do you want, I was told to shut up.

Well, Rickety didn't raise as much money with the gays for ButtBoy Baraka as Gorgeous George did............and I think that Barry would probably like the idea of having ol' Three-Day-Beard Michael in the lavatory of the West Wing!!! Kinda like the ol' Chicago gay club days!!!

Three paltry degrees of separation. Juan Belmonte, who's producing my upcoming single, produced several major artists in the 1990's, including Ricky Martin -- and won a Grammy for it, too (one of 3, I believe :))

Thanks for bringing THAT up. 1985. Remember it well. My room was across the hall from my then teenage older sister who played Wham! nonstop. She had a huge thing for George Michael...
I was practically begging her to play her Depeche Mode and Duran Duran collection in the mornings instead as we were getting ready for school. To stay sane.

Music morphs. Music changes. Music evolves. Someone listens to someone else and takes it in a new direction. This guy puts it much more succinctly then I ever could.
I know disco never died. Because I went overseas just as the genre spun off into a thousand different sub-genres. And I got exposed to the countries that took it up and morphed it into something more.

The Magical Fantasy World of Toure
Submitted by Nelbert on Fri, 05/18/2012 - 2:48pm.
Toure was born in 1971, so at disco's apogee, he was just a short while out of diapers. He obviously has no clue about the history of disco and why it faded.
But let's do some analysis. He wants to claim racism and homophobia as the root cause of disco's death. I guess he never heard of Queen, David Bowie, Lou Reed, the New York Dolls, or any of those bands from the 1970s that touted the fashion of androgyny. And wonder how this clueless little child explains the popularity of funk and soul bands like the Commodores or pop bands like the Jackson 5.
Those of us who were the right age to experience all this know that disco died because it was time for it to die. It was overproduced in style and vapid in content (no offense to Ms. Summers, but the lyrics to 'Love to Love You Baby' don't exactly speak deeply about the human condition). New musical styles emerged. By the mid 1980s, those new styles included the likes of Erasure, Depeche Mode, Bronski Beat and others that were pretty "out there" with their homosexuality, as well as myriad black performers like Price, Whitney Houston, Michael and Janet Jackson, Tracy Chapman, ....
In short, Toure is just plain stupid.
