Palin Smacks Down NBC's Lauer: GOP Ticket Will Be 'Clobbered' By 'Lamestream Media'

By Kyle Drennen | April 03, 2012 | 10:40

On Tuesday's NBC Today, co-host Matt Lauer pressed Sarah Palin on whether the Republican nominee should pick a vice presidential running mate with more experience than she had in 2008. Palin hit back: "I would say it doesn't matter if that person has national level experience or not, they're going to get clobbered by the lamestream media, who does not like the conservative message." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

Lauer denigrated Palin's qualifications as he asked: "When you were plucked from obscurity in 2008 you'd been Alaska's governor about two years. You didn't have any real experience on the national stage....Do you think, if Mitt Romney's the nominee, he should choose someone with more experience on the national battlefield than you had at the time?"

Palin issued a warning to her fellow Republicans:

The GOP ticket, to tell you the truth, Matt, doesn't know what's coming. They don't know what's going to hit them in terms of double standards being applied to them and the positions that they hold, and the records that they are running on, from, you know, personal family issues to anything else. There will be that double standard applied no matter who it is.

Concluding the segment, Lauer took a parting shot as he referenced Palin's guest hosting the show in the next hour: "And I want to mention to people, you are going to stick around and join us for our 8:00 hour, which technically makes you part of the lamestream media for that hour. I just want you to know."

On Monday, NewBusters' Geoff Dickens detailed some of the worst Today show bias against Palin over the years.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Here is a transcript of the April 3 exchange:

7:10AM ET

(...)

LAUER: If Mitt Romney is the nominee, one of the first real major decisions he'll have to make is on a vice presidential candidate. When you were plucked from obscurity in 2008 you'd been Alaska's governor about two years. You didn't have any real experience on the national stage, and in this era of intense media scrutiny, you took some lumps. You had mixed results, as we all know. Do you think, if Mitt Romney's the nominee, he should choose someone with more experience on the national battlefield than you had at the time?

PALIN: Well, you know, I would put up my record as a CEO of a city, of a state, as an oil and gas regulator, up against any of the other potential GOP vice presidential nominees last go-around. So you know, I'm proud to stand on my record as a private sector, and a public servant CEO.

LAUER: But if you were advising Mitt Romney, would you say go out and get someone who is battle tested on a national level?

PALIN: I would say it doesn't matter if that person has national level experience or not, they're going to get clobbered by the lamestream media, who does not like the conservative message. And it doesn't matter if that person has been a known commodity to the mainstream, lamestream media or not.

What I would advise Mitt Romney, or whomever the nominee would be is, don't necessarily play it safe, and do just what the GOP establishment expects them to do. And that is, to get somebody kind of just going along to get along, not willing to go rogue and shake it up and say that we need relentless, and we need sudden reform of our government to put it back on the side of the people.

LAUER: Governor Sarah Palin. Governor, thank you very much. I appreciate it.

PALIN: Thank you.

LAUER: And I want to mention to people, you are going to stick around and join us for our 8:00 hour, which technically makes you part of the lamestream media for that hour. I just want you to know. Nice to have you here.

PALIN: Thank you so much.

If this on-air behavior is a indicator of the private man, I can see why his marriage to wife Annette has been tempestuous at best.

Lauer's questioning style is anything but debonair.  Cary Grant he is not.  What a shame, If he were less snarky, he'd be almost watchable.  Handsome on the outside, soulless on the inside.

"intense media scrutiny"

Submitted by needle on Tue, 04/03/2012 - 12:53pm.

When Matt cautioned about “in this era of intense media scrutiny …” I was hoping Sarah would say something like:

So, Matt, are you referring to the fact that Bill Ayers wrote Obama’s book for him, or how Obama completely wasted all of the $150M of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, or how Obama partied with a Palestinian Terrorist, or how Obama considered Jeremiah Wright his spiritual leader… are you referring to those facts and many others like them as receiving intensive media scrutiny?

Darn, a golden opportunity missed.

Submitted by charlietexas on Tue, 04/03/2012 - 11:00am.

That was a beautiful response to an ugly question. NBC is unapologetically having Gov. Palin on to boost ratings and that Katie Couric is on GMA. Stupid. I watched her in a panel with Nancy Sniderman among others and Nancy found herself agreeing with some of Palin's stances on stupid issues like Facebook enemies lists. I almost went to sleep.

Submitted by NVRAT on Tue, 04/03/2012 - 2:04pm.

I got the impression that Lauer was a little afraid of Palin because his messages were sort of mild. Now that does not mean he would not have been more aggressive it just appeared to me he was not sure how much he would get clobbered if he took that road. So, he took the non aggressive approach with childish catty girlie remarks.

Now, I DVR'd the show and am watching it right now. I really wish that the camera would have stayed on Missy Lauer when Sarah was slamming Obama and calling out the lame stream media. That being said I do not think he knew how to handle the interview. He woefully pulled out the libturd tactic of of "Some people say" and Sarah just shrugged it off.
