NBC Panelist Donny Deutsch: Tim Tebow Joining NY Jets 'Will Be His Waterloo'
Responding on Tuesday to NBC Today co-host Matt Lauer wondering if Tim Tebow would be the "right fit" for the New York Jets, advertising executive Donny Deutsch predicted the faithful quarterback was doomed: "Wrong. Couldn't have made a worse move. This will be his Waterloo. New York will take him down. We are a very tough, jaded city. They're not going to buy this unconditional love."
Lauer set up the question to the show's Today's Professionals panel by describing the New York culture as antithetical to Tebow's Christian values: "Is this a fit? This is New York City. The city that never sleeps. This is Joe Namath town, that he owned as a swinging bachelor. It's the city of A-Rod and Donald Trump."
On Thursday, Lauer posed the same question to his fellow co-hosts, with Ann Curry observing: "You know, he's so clean-cut, he's so earnest. And – and this is a tough town. New York is a very tough town." Savannah Guthrie announced it would be a "culture shock."
News anchor Natalie Morales joked: "I was going to say, it's a good thing the New York press is so forgiving – not!" Guthrie chimed in: "No, are you kidding? The tabloids are saying, 'Thank you, God. There is a God.'"
Lauer noted how the reaction to the move was "very mixed" and that, "There's a lot of negative comments, a lot of negative tweets. Joe Willy Nameth, the legendary coach – I mean, quarterback of the New York Jets, said he thinks it's a bad idea...Publicity stunt."
Later, weatherman Al Roker described the Jets as having "an embarrassment of riches" with Tebow on the team. Guthrie pointed out: "But, Tebow, isn't he known for inspiring and motivating his team mates? So maybe he'll be a positive force on the team." Curry concluded: "Welcome to New York Tim Tebow. We're excited to have you....Forget about all this talk."
Here is a transcript of Deutsch's March 27 comments:
8:16AM ET
(...)
MATT LAUER: Minute left, Tim Tebow introduced to the New York press yesterday as the new backup quarterback for the New York Jets. It was a spectacle press conference. Is this a fit? This is New York City. The city that never sleeps. This is Joe Namath town, that he owned as a swinging bachelor. It's the city of A-Rod and Donald Trump. Is Tim Tebow the right fit for this...
NANCY SNYDERMAN: And Matt Lauer.
LAUER: Well, I doubt it. Is he the right fit for this city?
DONNY DEUTSCH: Wrong. Couldn't have made a worse move. This will be his Waterloo. New York will take him down. We are a very tough, jaded city. They're not going to buy this unconditional love. I wish I was advising him. He should have steered right to Jacksonville.
STAR JONES: If he is authentic, then it will be fine
LAUER: I gotta go, alright? Star, Donny, Nancy, thank you very much.
SNYDERMAN: You bet, Matt.

Tebow will be fine. This WILL NOT BE his Waterloo, rather it will be THE JETS ORGANIZATION AS A WHOLE'S WATERLOO. Remember, the J-E-T-S Just End The Season were an 8-8 ballclub last year that collapsed with 3 games remaining. The offense was terrible.
As the old saying goes so truthfully: "If you have 2 quarterbacks on your team, then you have no quarterback".

What is it that makes NYC so tough?
I can't decide if it's the elimination of trans-fats and salt from foods, banning of smoking in buildings or blaming other states for their gun crimes.

Tebow CAN handle NYC and I think that's what pisses them off. People want to see him fail because they know where his strength comes from.
I don't know about all that.

I don't know about all that. But I think New Yorkers like to exaggerate about "how tough" the city is, that NYC is "the big leagues." And sure, the criticism is heavy and not bashful for athletes, but sometimes people in the media overplay that angle.

I'd be willing to bet a good number don't like him just because they think he's hyped as a better QB than they think he really is, that he can't really hack it in the NFL.

Sure it is. Just as Rush was excoriated for expressing what everyone knew about Donovan McNabb at the time, that the media wanted him to succeed, as it is here, where the media want Tebow to fail.
I see all this talk about how "controversial" he is, when all the guy is doing is being true to himself and his faith. It;s the frigging media creating the controversy.

But I will counter those in the sports media who question his skills and his abilities.
1. Statistics can be misleading, but in Tebow's case, his QB rating is rather low for the NFL.
2. But as unorthodox as he is compared to his peers, he won ball games in the clutch, and that's all that owners and coaches care about. His outcomes llast year at Denver far surpassed his stats, and he made believers (small "b") out of a lot of experts.
Because of this, I think the experts sought to find faults in Tebow's character; they wanted to prove that somehow he's fake, and so they focused on his "Tebowing" (They rarely if ever attack non-white players for religious gestures).
They gave him the Palin Treatment and they are praying (pun intended) for his failure despite the fact that he hasn't harmed anyone; in fact, he's been most congenial toward his opponents on and off the field. And not unlike Palin, the fact that he hasn't crumpled beneath the weight of their insults serves to make them angrier.
And should he fail, they will joyously celebrate and shout "We TOLD you so."
I think that's what's at the heart of this story.
That's what makes this sports story different than most.
I believe that a lot of
Submitted by balboa on Wed, 03/28/2012 - 11:54am.
I believe that a lot of people that aren't pro Tebow want to see him fail simply so that they can rag on his supporters, not because they actually don't like him. It's like the person who hates the Yankees because of their fans.
But this whole Jets thing has all kinds of other problems, like a blowhard head coach, a starting QB already in place, and a NY media that loves controversy.
And I disagree
Submitted by Bliggie on Wed, 03/28/2012 - 1:02pm.
When you say it's not that simple. The so called experts have wanted Tebow to fail since his last game at UF, the sugar bowl in NOLA where he threw for almost 600 yards. They said he would never go in the first round of the draft, he did, said he would never be a starter, he was, said he'd never make the playoffs, he did. I mean we're talking about a guy who dominated the toughest conference in college football for 3 years and all the experts said he couldnt make it in the nfl. They have been wanting him to fail since the beginning, not because he proved them wrong by winning. They have wanted to find flaws in his character since he was in
College because of his beliefs on religion and pro life stance, again if he was Muslim or atheist we wouldn't be having this conversation because there is nothing polarizing about Islam or atheism, just a southern Christian

Tebow chose NY over Jacksonville because that's where God wants him to spread the Gospel by the way he lives his life. All those poor, sad souls who think they know it all will be exposed to the example of someone who lives a decent God-fearing life. At first they won't understand it, so they will mock him, but then as they see the true joy that comes to a person living a Christ-like life, many will realize just what they've been missing out on. Maybe some of them will be smart enough to do something about it.

I occasionally see Donny Deutsch on Morning Bigot but watching him criticize NFL quarterback Tim Tibow on the Today show sort of makes you wonder. What’s a short dude metro-panzie type from NY doing popping off like this on “national” television, especially about and to someone like Tim Tebow. And can you imagine, Tebow looking at Deutsch and saying boo and a puddle starts to form around his $500 loafers.

It seems as if THE ONLY people on tv that have a problem with and are mocking Tim Tobow OUTRIGHT are Donny Douche and David Zirin, that douche from The Nation pinko commie rag (and M-BS-NBC contributor). Zirin is the guy who is outraged and thinks he is speaking on behalf of ALL LGBT people. Personally, I have YET to even hear a member of the LGBT community say a word about Tim Tebow.
