Jan Brewer Slams Media For Using 'Race Card' to 'Shut Down the Debate' on Illegal Immigration
While being grilled by co-host Ann Curry on Wednesday's NBC Today on Arizona's illegal immigration law causing racial discrimination, Governor Jan Brewer hit back and declared: "I believe truly that the media and others have tried to throw out that race card to shut down the debate. It's not about that. It's about illegal immigration." [Audio available here]
Earlier, Curry fretted: "Now what would justify such a law that required people, essentially, to carry papers, identification, something that proved that they're American citizens?" Brewer replied: "...it's under reasonable suspicion, it's no different than what law enforcement actually does today....So it's a simple issue, and the press, the liberal media tried to blow that completely totally out of perspective." [View video after the jump]
Curry pressed Brewer on whether police in Arizona would racially profile: "You say the people in Arizona are not racist or bigots. And so the question has been raised, why wouldn't an officer...not take into account the color of someone's skin in weighing whether or not to believe that someone might be an immigrant, an illegal immigrant?...wouldn't they weigh in the color of a person's skin in deciding whether or not that person?"
Here is a full transcript of the November 2 interview:
8:44AM ET
ANN CURRY: Illegal immigration is one of the hot button issues in the presidential campaign and the state of Arizona is right in the middle of that debate. More than a year after its Republican governor signed a controversial illegal immigration bill into law. Well now, Governor Jan Brewer has written a book about her struggle called "Scorpions for Breakfast: My Fight Against Special Interests, Liberal Media, and Cynical Politicos to Secure America's Border." Governor Brewer, good morning to you.
JAN BREWER: Good morning to you, Ann.
CURRY: First, let me ask you about what you wrote about in this book about Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. You describe her as a good friend despite your political differences. As such, she appears to be making a remarkable recovery.
BREWER: She does.
CURRY: Would you like to see her run for re-election?
BREWER: I would like to see what Gabby do whatever she can do and what she wants to do. She's a terrific gal, she's a wonderful elected official in Arizona, and more than that, she's been terrific for Arizona in the United States Congress. So I certainly hope that she can do whatever she chooses to do.
CURRY: Given all that she's endured, I imagine for a lot of people and maybe even for you, there would be sort of a sweet smile if you see her do something like that.
BREWER: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. She's a terrific – she really is terrific and it was such a tragic thing that happened down in Tucson. Our hearts were just broken for all, everybody that was murdered and injured down there. It was just a terrible day.
CURRY: You also write in this book, as we just mentioned, a lot about illegal immigration.
BREWER: I do.
CURRY: Why would you want to write a book about your experiences during this huge controversy that started to rage after the signing of this bill?
[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: "Scorpions for Breakfast"; Controversial Battle to Secure America's Border]
BREWER: Well, it was really important to me that I was able to put down what I believe was the truth about what we were doing in Arizona, and what we were more or less forced to do because the federal government wouldn't do their job. We are the gateway for illegal immigration into America, bottom line is, is that we can't afford it, we can't tolerate it, and we are the recipient of a lot of criminal acts. And the bottom line is, if the federal government won't protect our borders then Arizona will.
CURRY: You know, let's be very specific about what the bill said. The bill you signed, which is still being challenged in court, would let law enforcement check the immigration status of a suspected illegal immigrant if stopped during a lawful traffic stop, detention, or arrest. And it would require that suspected illegal immigrants show proof that they're here legally. Now what would justify such a law that required people, essentially, to carry papers, identification, something that proved that they're American citizens?
BREWER: Well, first of all, let me just say, Ann, that, you know, it's under reasonable suspicion, it's no different than what law enforcement actually does today. And you know, if you're here in our country or if you're in any other country, it's your responsibility to carry identification with you. So it's a simple issue, and the press, the liberal media tried to blow that completely totally out of perspective.
So I try to talk about that in my book, I'm trying to explain to people, that the people in Arizona are not racist, they are not bigots. We have tried to do the best that we can given the circumstances that we have been given. They closed down the borders in California, they closed down the borders in Texas, and they funneled everybody through Arizona. And we just can't expect our citizens to continue to pay the price. It's costing us $1.6 billion out of an $8 billion budget a year to take care of that issue.
CURRY: You say the people in Arizona are not racist or bigots. And so the question has been raised, why wouldn't an officer, if he's looking under these words, if he's thinking about a suspected illegal immigrant, are you saying that he would not, he or she would not take into account the color of someone's skin in weighing whether or not to believe that someone might be an immigrant, an illegal immigrant?
BREWER: Well, and in the law, it says, you know, it has to be under reasonable suspicion, meaning they have to have already committed something, another crime or illegal-
CURRY: Or be suspected of, I mean they're not necessarily committed, they may have had a-
BREWER: Of course, they're law enforcement. They've been trained. They know what to look for. But it's reasonable suspicion. You can't just walk up to somebody and arrest anybody. And when I signed this bill-
CURRY: But wouldn't they weigh in the color of a person's skin in deciding whether or not that person?
BREWER: No.
CURRY: Why wouldn't they?
BREWER: Why would they? I mean, we have grown up in the southwest, we have grown up – these are our friends, these are our neighbors, they're part of our families, it's just ridiculous and it's – you know what? I believe truly that the media and others have tried to throw out that race card to shut down the debate. It's not about that. It's about illegal immigration. It's about the spillover from Mexico and we're just asking the federal government to do their job.
And when I signed Senate Bill 1070, I wanted to make absolutely sure that it would work, that it would be constitutional, and nobody's civil rights would be offended. That was my main goal and that's why I wrote the book "Scorpions for Breakfast," I want to tell the truth. And I hope everybody that reads it, that they get that story and they understand we are just simply trying to do the job the federal government won't do. And if the federal government doesn't want to do it, well then they ought to change their laws.
CURRY: What do you say to the Obama administration, that has put out this information that under President Obama more people have been deported for illegal immigration status than under any other president since Eisenhower?
BREWER: Well, I say that's good, if that's factual and if that's true. The General Accounting Office, the GAO, says 55% of our border is not secured, and only 15% of those illegals that are coming across are arrested. That's not a secure border. That's not doing your job.
CURRY: We know you're feisty, Governor Jan Brewer, and in this book you're a fighter. Thank you so much...
BREWER: Thank you.
CURRY: ...for speaking to us, and really it's been a pleasure.
BREWER: Thank you.
CURRY: The book is called "Scorpions for Breakfast."

So... What... This is a special protected class of people somehow super sensitive so allowed to NOT HAVE I.D. AFTER BEING PULLED OVER????
Because THAT'S THE LAW as Arizona wrote it.
And stop it with this liberal canard that cops will "harass you while out for ice cream" like Obama said. THE ONLY WAY TO SIGN ON TO THAT IS TO BELIEVE COPS ARE PIGS AND YOU GD KNOW IT.

The media try to claim that it is racist to ask someone for proof of citizenship after they have been stopped or question for some other violation, asserting profiling. But then the same media turn around and say that the illegal immigration issue is losing Republicans votes in the Hispanic community, in the same breath. They have no shame, and Brewer is right, the race angle is designed to distract from the issue, and assure the Left their 'instant voters'.
I'd love to see a trend to replace all the media jobs, like Curry's, with Spanish speaking illegals. If they protest about losing their jobs, just tell them they are 'racists' and Un-employment is the best stimulus for the Country.

I’ve noticed since SB1070 was signed into law, there are fewer people speaking Spanish around town. It used to be if you went into any store a good 35-45% of the customers were speaking Spanish – Now I would estimate it’s down to about 10-20%.
Please do not “read” into that comment more than there is… It is just an observation confined to the moderately sized town where I live.
Gov. Brewer is doing an OK job... and she is feisty and somewhat blunt when confronted by BS. She is also correct when she say’s this is a fake racism issue.

Grumpy...I've noticed the same thing (here in AZ). There's been a significant reduction in the number of day workers hanging out on the corners in Mesa. Having said that, I always laugh when ICE or Arpaio announce the bust of maybe 5 or 10 illegals after months and months of investigating when I could show them 30 or 40 on any day of the week hanging out at a nearby convenience store while they wait to be picked up for work, right?!

Poor Jan...she's talking with such conviction, but to a person who epitomizes the clueless liberal media talking heads. Ann Curry regularly leads with her heart on the pieces she does and her entire mental arsenal is left of center. You'd have as much luck telling her that a white person acts out of something other than prejudice as you would explaining to her that there is a viable argument disproving global warming rhetoric. She is a liberal. There is no need for her to think...she already knows the truth.
STOP THE TRAVESTY OF OUR IMMIGRATION LAWS
Submitted by Brittanicus on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 6:35pm.
Currently taxpayer’s are subsidizing some of the 9.1 percent of (22 million citizens and legal residents) of unemployed Americans, since the leaders of Congress (bipartisan) have declined to vote on a bill on this immigration enforcement bill. It would send a message to the millions of illegal aliens hired by criminal business owners, who have placed in payroll jobs of construction, entertainment, hospitality, and manufacturing and of the service workforce.
President Obama has just announced to a large crowd, that he is going ahead with one piece-meal construction project to repair bridges, across the country. This is all well and good, even though this is going against approval of the House. What must be demanded is that Contractors and sub-contractors use E-Verify, to eliminate foreign laborers from taking the jobs from Americans.
Rep. Lamar Smith’s House Judiciary Committee has already passed a bill to move illegal aliens out of those jobs. But a lot more Members of the U.S. House of Representatives need to sign the bill, before House leaders will move it to the top of the list for a vote. We should not let this bill (H.R. 2885) fall between the cracks, as it’s apparent power strengthen a thousand fold, by changing it from ‘THE LEGAL WORKFORCE ACT’ accredited as E-Verify from voluntary to a solid mandatory program so nobody can escape from its electronic talons; either habitual business owner or his hired illegal aliens.
Please call your House Representative at the Congressional Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and beleaguer them to sponsor the ‘Legal Workforce’ Act, specifically the ‘Ways and Means Committee, controlled by Majority Speak John Boehner (R-OH) to get his colleagues House Representatives of their reluctant seats and sponsor Bill H.R. 2885.
Every voting American should sacrifice a few minutes of their time, to connect with Washington. Remember that your tax dollars fortunately are supporting regular Americans and their families to buy food and gas for their car. Unemployment benefits, Food Stamps can only go so far, so you can help put bread on the table. With no hindrance from our federal government, our schools are crowded with children of illegal nationals, the emergency hospitals suffocating under the illegal parents with their kids, and all are mostly unfunded mandates. A commitment forced upon us by the Liberal Courts. In the past 10 years over 89 hospitals have been shuttered in the Border States, and even worse the penal system has to find room for hundreds of thousands of illegal alien felons.
WE NEED THE UNENTHUSIASTIC POLITICIANS TO MAKE ILLEGAL ENTRANCE INTO AMERICA A ‘A’ CLASS FELONY. THEN WATCH THE MASS EXODUS OF FOREIGNERS TAKE PLACE.
HOW CAN WE EVER HOPE TO CUT THE 15 TRILLION DOLLARS UNITED STATES DEFICIT, WHEN WE ARE SUPPORTING A RISING 100 BILLION DOLLARS TO FISCALLY MAINTAIN ILLEGAL ALIEN FAMILIES.
IF THE TEA PARTY TAKES BACK THE SENATE, ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION WILL BE REDUCED TO A TRICKLE, WITH FULL ENFORCEMENT OF THE 1986 SIMPSON-MAZZOLI BILL. THE TEA PARTY WILL PERMANENTLY DEPLOY A NATIONAL GUARD FORCE AT THE BORDER, WITH THE FULL INSTALLATION OF THE 2006 SECURE FENCE ACT. SANCTUARY CITIES WILL BE PROHIBITED AND ONLY THE HIGHEST SKILLED OCCUPATION IN SCIENCE, ENGINNEERING AND TECHNOLOGY WILL RECEIVE EXPEDITED JOB VISAS.
The latest Freshman Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) who has cosponsored the House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith's Legal Workforce Act (H.R. 2885) that would require 100 percent of businesses to use E-Verify for new hires within 2 years. Schweikert is joining 48 other sponsors, which as anybody should guess contains no Democrats. No Liberal, Republican of the established hierarchy are skittish in sponsoring this bill, as it will reduced large voting blocs of illegal aliens and the leaders in the influential GOP ‘s, eradication of cheap labor. In all future election TEA PARTY members will stay vigilant on polling Stations, registration rolls and absentee ballot fraud. The dogma from Democrats that E-Verify is full of errors is claptrap, as they are nervous that future votes—legal and illegal—will be severed.
THIS ADMINISTRATION IN FAILING BADLY IN SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL POLICING POLICIES, SUCH IS IN ARIZONA. WE MUST GIVE THEM THE TOOLS TO FIGHT NOT ONLY ILLEGAL ALIEN, BUT GUN RUNNERS, DRUG DEALERS AND THE AWFUL INFLUX OF CRIMINALS. EVERY POLICE DEPARTMENT SHOULD DEMAND THE PROGRAM ’SECURE COMMUNITIES’ SO FINGERPRINTS OF ILLEGAL ALIEN SUSPECTS CAN BE FORWARDED TO ICE AND HOMELAND SECURITY.
Rep. Schweikert represents Arizona's 5th Congressional District after defeating two-term incumbent Harry Mitchell last fall. In just his first term, Rep. Schweikert has already earned a career B-plus grade and graph measurement at NUMBERSUSA website.

I have a friend who owns a business in North Carolina. He said he's not allowed to ask about citizenship when hiring, and once hired he's not allowed to fire an employee on that basis. He does his best NOT to hire illegals and find a reason to fire them if he discovers them. But he has to be very careful not to violate their civil rights. Unbelievable.

Submitted by ohio granny on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 8:34pm.
If I am pulled over while driving here in Ohio I have to show my drivers license. I assume that is the same in all states? So does that mean a person in this country illegally does NOT need to show identification or a drivers license? Cars with Florida license plates are routinely stopped here in Ohio because of drug smuggling and I bet they expect those people to have some sort of identification. And I bet if they don't they are held in some jail until they can.
So pray tell why does an illegal immigrant not need to have some sort of identification? And just like an American citizen, should they not be required to produce identification if requested by police? And if they are in this country illegally they should be immediately deported. If they knew that was likely to happen, they probably would think twice before coming across the border illegally.
We are fooling ourselves.
Submitted by ant on Wed, 11/02/2011 - 9:34pm.
Sometimes I think we are thinking about this all wrong. We talk about ID's or working papers as if we are still in the days of migrant workers looking to make some money, or an occasional fugitive from justice. If even our own officials, such as the traitor Hilda Soldis, Sanchez sisters (D's- California) Gutierrez(D-Ill), Napolitano, et al are evidence, we have gone past this point now. American ID (the gringo system) is actually a moot point. WE shouldn't expect invading armies of racists, encouraged by their government and from inside our own to Conquer the US, to carry around ID with them. Nor should we expect the current administration or many of the facets of our twisted bureacracies to side with America, they don't hide their subversives ideas anymore than LaRaza does. The whole debate is somewhat pointless unless we are able to cut the cancer of the left from the system or until the whole thing blows up into violent war. Could France expect the Nazis to follow French laws during WWII?
An individual State's efforts to deport is a fool's errand, unless our so-called government is all in. The illegals will simply re-cross the border and things will continue as they are, or flock to another part of the US. Same problems and wasted money. We need real representation for the people, we are not getting that now, at all. Real representation would be concerned that over 14 million Americans are un-employed while LaRAza's own website praises the virtue of "22 million immigrants working in the US, a backbone of the economy." Well, noone in Washington should be siiting on their hands while the US receives a 'backbone' transplant, like they are. Rare is the conservative in politics with the courage to point out the subversion branching into every aspect of government, and the true motivations behind illegal immigration.
There is always the possibility that children of illegals will walk away from the racist/jingoist push and embrace America as it should be. But that's a slim chance, as evidenced by continuing protests and rhetoric. Just as many African-Americans still feel they need to be militant and punish the Nation and the white race, I would have thought that would recede completely in time too, but it hasn't. Not even after the election of a black President.

That's good, and that was my hope, that this BS ideology would be left behind, as the same sort of thing has been in the past. Still, this stupid, racist rhetoric continues from too many of our 'representatives' and I'm not going to walk back a mile and a half, until they walk back two. Frankly, I'm sick of it. The divisions and finger pointing and racist preaching is scratchin' my last nerve, and I'm not quick to forgive. And as much as I would welcome all who want to partake of the American experiment, I still cannot justify having massive unemployment around me and in the news while foreign Nationals are not just working here but protesting me, my skin-color and my country, sorry. That too is BS. If I can go to Mexico and get work framing houses, fine, because I sure as hell can't here, until then, no sympathy. Go home, don't let the door hit ya on the way out, amigo. I'm censoring myself now, it is not all kumbya by any stretch when it comes to my feelings and experience with the illegal population, and I'm saying that as nicely as I can.
