NBC Cheers President Obama Being 'Tobacco Free' After 'Long Struggle'
On Tuesday's NBC Today, co-host Matt Lauer excitedly announced to viewers: "President Obama passed his latest physical with flying colors, one of the headlines coming out...the President is now tobacco free." White House correspondent Kristen Welker reported: "President Obama has never made a secret about his struggle to quit smoking....But it seems now it's a habit he may have finally put out."
Welker sympathetically noted: "Mr. Obama is tobacco free, that's a marked difference from last year's medical report...suggesting he was still in the process of giving up smoking. A long struggle which the President has openly discussed....smoking has dogged him since his days on the campaign trail."
Supportive sound bites were included in the report. Dr. Cheryl Healton, President of the American Legacy Foundation, declared: "Quitting smoking is an enormous achievement." The Washington Post's Nia-Malika Henderson saw it as good politics: "I think people want their presidents to be role models and it only just reaffirms that this president is human, he has struggles, and that in this instance he was able to overcome."
Welker went so far as to use the President's quitting to take a jab at Herman Cain: "More than 46 million Americans smoke, but for a politician, taking a drag can be a bit of a lightning rod. A Herman Cain campaign video went viral showing the candidate's campaign manager smoking. Many Americans were angered, forcing Cain to explain he does not endorse smoking."
Wrapping up her fawning report, Welker proclaimed: "Now the physical also says that President Obama is eating healthy, he's physically active. His cholesterol is even down. In essence, it says at age 50 he is fit to serve and at least for now, free of tobacco."
Here is a full transcript of the November 1 segment:
7:11AM ET
MATT LAUER: President Obama passed his latest physical with flying colors, one of the headlines coming out of that physical examination from his doctor is that the President is now tobacco free. NBC's Kristen Welker is at the White House with details on that. Kristen, good morning.
KRISTEN WELKER: Good morning to you, Matt. Well, President Obama has never made a secret about his struggle to quit smoking. In fact, he and the First Lady have discussed it publicly. But it seems now it's a habit he may have finally put out. President Obama insisted his bad habit was a thing of the past last week on Jay Leno.
[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: No Butts at the White House; President Obama Declared "Tobacco Free"]
JAY LENO: Talk about some lighter stuff, about dealing with the pressure of being president. Now, I know you quit smoking.
BARACK OBAMA: I did. I did, definitively.
WELKER: And now the President's got the medical records to prove it. According to a physical released Monday, Mr. Obama is tobacco free, that's a marked difference from last year's medical report, which listed the President as taking "nicotine replacement therapy," suggesting he was still in the process of giving up smoking. A long struggle which the President has openly discussed.
OBAMA: Look, I've said before that as a former smoker, I constantly struggle with it. Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes.
WELKER: It's a habit the President started decades ago. These photos show a young Obama, cigarette in hand, at Occidental College. But as an adult, smoking has dogged him since his days on the campaign trail.
UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: When's the last time that you've fallen off the wagon?
OBAMA: You know, I don't remember. But it was probably – it's been a while.
WELKER: He was often seen on the trail chewing Nicorette gum to keep the cravings down. Mrs. Obama urged her husband to quit smoking before taking office, famously asked for America's help on 60 Minutes.
MICHELLE OBAMA: Please, America, watch, keep an eye on him and call me if you see him smoking.
DR. CHERYL HEALTON [PRESIDENT, AMERICAN LEGACY FOUNDATION]: Quitting smoking is an enormous achievement. It is very, very difficult to stop a long-term nicotine addiction.
WELKER: More than 46 million Americans smoke, but for a politician, taking a drag can be a bit of a lightning rod. A Herman Cain campaign video went viral showing the candidate's campaign manager smoking. Many Americans were angered, forcing Cain to explain he does not endorse smoking. Analysts say the stigma may be one more reason the President worked so hard to quit.
NIA-MALIKA HENDERSON: I think people want their presidents to be role models and it only just reaffirms that this president is human, he has struggles, and that in this instance he was able to overcome.
WELKER: Now the physical also says that President Obama is eating healthy, he's physically active. His cholesterol is even down. In essence, it says at age 50 he is fit to serve and at least for now, free of tobacco. Matt.
LAUER: Alright, Kristen Welker at the White House this morning. Kristen, thank you very much.

It's hard to quit smoking. Nothing wrong with giving credit where it is due. Same with George Bush and giving up drinking.

Yes, but every single thing He does is seen by the media as a hyper-human act.

Obama dogged by [media?] for smoking . . when?

Oh rightly O. Obama was dogged by the media over his smoking about as much as Joe Biden was dogged by the media over his drinking (and I mention this today - because some in the media (inc. CNN) are playing up this theme that a looser than usual Gov. Perry might have been drunk at an event):
I note. A certain reporter at CNN just informed me that she didn't think Biden appeared to be drunk - or bizarre (in that clip). Hmm.

The media's fawning over Obama is getting unbearable. After they applauded Obama's
public proclamation to rule through executive order bypassing Congress, they confirmed
just how useless they were. A president acting as if a king should terrify every American,
not bring cheers from the "independent" media. Luckily I have the time to get my news
from many different sources, but anyone only watching network news has no hope of
seeing reality. There have been virtually no reality based reports on Solyndra, fast and furious, Beacon Power, Light Squared or the hundreds of serious crimes and anti-American activities
at OWS. However, one sign with a swastika and one gun toter at a Tea Party assembly
defined the entire movement as racist, ignorant, violent, and anti-Semitic. I have no association
with the tea party or ows, but is it too much to ask for the TRUTH about them and this
administration?
Terrifying??

I'm not so terrified of a dictator acting unilaterally like Soetoro is as much as I am of a pathetic Congress that REFUSES to take him down given his NUMEROUS violations of the Constitution. I know they have to have the Senate for it, which is tightly under Democrat control, but for God's sake, they haven't even TRIED to charge him!(they recently decided not to keep trying to repeal the health care nonsense)
It's disgusting that everything is out in the open at this point, and nothing's being done.

I think the tobacco demon always stays with us even when we stop smoking. I quit 40 years ago yet, even now, I think, "Heck, what harm can one little cigarette do. But it's that ol' tobacco devil talking, and I know what would happen! At my age (70+), smoking is the last thing I should do.
Maybe smoke free, in Obama's case, means he doesn't barbecue anymore?
It is not the tobacco demon

I am afraid of it is the stratospheric taxed $6.10 pack a day and cigarette demon that frightens me. I quit smoking cigarettes 15 odd years ago but I also gave up my more than occasional pipe and occasional cigar which were enjoyable and I don't believe, in moderation, harmful no matter what the nicotine nazi's say. I would like to smoke my pipe again but I am afraid of it leading back to cigarette smoking. But if I had quit 40 years ago and was now 70+ I definitely would only worry about the cash cost of smoking cigarettes cause I don't think the median life span of 10 or 12 more years would matter healthwise much unless of course you think you can make it to the 90's or 100's (and that is mostly good genes). If I could have cut my smoking down to 3-5 cigarettes a day I would never have quit. But the pack+ a day took its toll.

I think you've talked me into smoking my pipe again. Used to really like that. All four of my grandparents lived to their 90's with my paternal grandmother living to within one month of her 100th birthday. She smoked like a stovepipe LOL.

to hand out at my daughter's wedding. Intending to smoke just one but chickened out and gave the box to my brother in-law. My spouse still smokes and the cash savings would be significant if she quit which leads me to the exorbitant excise taxes on cigarettes (and the recently enacted large increase in the federal excise tax on loose tobacco). I live in (Socialist Republic of) Maryland which in a legislative "feel good" mood boosted the tax on cigarettes to a punishing degree where now it is around 6 bucks a pack. Now the SRM is a small state and if one looks at a map most of the state's borders (where cigarettes are much cheaper-especially in Virginia) are no more than 30 minutes distant to most residents. This has elicited burgeoning cottage industry of cigarette outlets on the borders as more business killing taxes are enacted in this state. Our intrepid governor with his blue ribbon panel has recommended a 15 cent tax increase on gasoline which would just make it worthwhile for truckers and many drivers to go out of state for their gas. But the dem party is firmly entrenched in this worker's paradise so the taxes and fees never stop going up.

The Nazis were anti-smoking too

I'm not pro-smoking in the least, but I noted in my book America's Road to Fascism: From the Progressives to the Era of Hope and Change that the Nazis were really into pushing "healthy" eating and were the first to launch an anti-smoking campaign.
But that said... I have to wonder, why should it matter if Obama smokes? Again, I'm pretty anti-smoking and won't let people smoke in my house. That said, do we want the POTUS to be cranky and stressed out? If he needs to smoke he should smoke.
As for his health, do we really need to *care* about cancer and health problems later vs. his mental health and handling of stress now! This is one factor that is never noted. People who quit smoking can be under greater stress, and it can be very difficult. Does the POTUS need this extra stress?

I'm pretty sure that the Nazi officers smoked in private (not in public) and that they liked the American cigarettes the best...........
and the actual foot soldiers and the rest of the military smoked as much as any other military - whether it was the Russians, Americans. Japanese, Australians, or whatever. And there were also a lot of gays in the ranks of the Nazis...........regardless of Hitler's edicts. And, given the heinous acts that they committed..............what the hell does smoking have to do with it anyway??
And as to Boy Barry's 'stress'???? I could give a rat's rear end about his so-called 'stress'..........in fact, the only time I ever see him looking stressed is when people are disagreeing with him, or calling him out on his dishonesty and disingenuousness. And given the massive amount of 'stress' that he has caused this country since he was immaculated, it wouldn't bother me - or millions like me - if the guy was stressed out about anything!!! Maybe he ought to quit the damn 'job' (hey Barry, it actually IS a 'real job'!!!) if the stress is getting to him.
Plus............I don't believe for a minute that the guy has 'quit' smoking. And also, this article erroneously states that his smoking has been a problem for him since the campaign trail. WRONG!!! The guy has been smoking since he was a young man, and it's verifiable.
Its the only thing I LIKED about him!

I'm not a doctor, but I don't recall there being any 'test' that would check to see if a patient is 'tobacco free'.
At my last physical, the only 'test' regarding tobacco use was the doctor asking, "Do you smoke or use smokeless tobacco?"
So I'm pretty sure all Obama had to do was answer, "No" for his physical to say he was "tobacco free".
And I know I've heard my wife lie when answering that question, and she's probably far more truthful that our president.
