Martin Bashir Worries Puppet Will Starve Thanks to Evil Republicans

Touting Sesame Street's newest muppet character, a young girl living in poverty, MSNBC host Martin Bashir on Wednesday slammed Republican efforts to curb spending and urged: "...perhaps they do well to change the channel just for a moment from Fox News to PBS.... on Sesame Street they will see the sad face of a hungry doll whose family doesn't have enough money to buy food." [Audio available here]

Bashir began his rant by announcing: "One in four children under the age of 6 now lives in poverty.....And it's gotten so bad, that even Sesame Street can no longer ignore it." Despite Barack Obama being in the White House, Bashir attacked the GOP for that statistic: "...as Republicans in Congress push to slash subsidies for home heating oil and work with all their might to cut off unemployment benefits..." [View video after the jump]

Bashir depicted Republicans as stereotypical wealthy fat cats who all watch Fox News and drink expensive champagne: "We're not recommending that they leave any of their opulent salons in Washington, nor decline that invitation to attend a dinner party at the home of a wealthy lobbyist. No, all we're asking is that they change the channel for just a few minutes....And then they can go back to Fox News and the finest Bollinger that money can buy."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Here is a full transcript of Bashir's October 5 outburst:

3:45PM ET

MARTIN BASHIR: One in four children under the age of 6 now lives in poverty. That statistic is not drawn from an African nation, but it applies to children living in America today. Indeed, since the recession began, over two and a half million children in this country go to bed hungry and under-nourished. And it's gotten so bad, that even Sesame Street can no longer ignore it. Meet the newest muppet on the block, her name is Lilly and her life story, as she tells it, seems a world away from the normally happy times on the street.

LILLY: When you don't even know whether you're going to have a next meal or not, that can be pretty hard.

BASHIR: Lilly will appear on a primetime special this Sunday night, it's called Growing Hope Against Hunger. And its stated goal is to raise awareness of this epidemic that has swept across the country.

So as Republicans in Congress push to slash subsidies for home heating oil and work with all their might to cut off unemployment benefits, perhaps they do well to change the channel just for a moment from Fox News to PBS this Sunday night.

We're not recommending that they leave any of their opulent salons in Washington, nor decline that invitation to attend a dinner party at the home of a wealthy lobbyist. No, all we're asking is that they change the channel for just a few minutes, because there, on Sesame Street they will see the sad face of a hungry doll whose family doesn't have enough money to buy food, a fictional take on a factual reality for millions of children in modern America. And then they can go back to Fox News and the finest Bollinger that money can buy.

Poverty?

Submitted by BeanMan on Thu, 10/06/2011 - 7:15am.

Well, fine! Show the puppet in their 3-bedroom home with two cars in the driveway and satellite TV and a 48" HDTV in the living room. That's, I believe, the typical home of the typical poor person in this country.

Or they could show poor in, say, Russia or China where in the big cities one needs to step out of the way of the poor and indigent on the streets. Or in the smaller towns where you can't tell the nice homes from the run-down shacks because they're one and the same.

Maybe they could go to Azerbaijan and walk down the street and the average poor Azeri picks the Westerner out of the crowd (easily done w/Blond hair and blue eyes) and begs $$ from them. Where you see the most beaten down shack and can't imagine someone actually lives there and you see an entire family (Mom, Dad, Children, Grandchildren, Grandfather, Grandmother) all live there.

But looking at that won't get Democrats re-elected, so they won't show it.

Here's a statistic!

Submitted by kata on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 5:05pm.

The 2009 tax form shows that Sesame Workshop brought in about $140 million in revenues in 2008, with government grants accounting for just over $14 million of that (roughly 10 percent).

Yes, it's time to defund Big Bird.

And here's some reading material : The Hunger Hoax by Thomas Sowell.

Mr Sowell refers to the article : Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?  : The NY Times telling us what we already knew.

Mr Bashir I would recommend you spend less time pontificating and more time reading.  Maybe Elmo can give you some tips.

Submitted by kata on Thu, 10/06/2011 - 1:53am.

the "food security" statistics. I was helping my daughter with a paper on Hunger (or malnutrition) in the US last year and found the terms frustratingly vague and subjective. I also found it impossible to get a hard statistic on just how many people died from hunger each year in the US. Perhaps you know? I pretty much exausted my google-foo on the subject.

Technically renters do pay property tax in that a portion of their rent is to cover property taxes payed for by the owners. Now, if the local government is giving a tax break to developed properties in certain areas then that is a different issue.

Chew on this Bashir

Submitted by HiHoRando on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 5:35pm.

As someone who is in the homes of those who are "starving" each and every day, I wonder which stimulus gave them the unlimited access to cigarettes and beer, as well as a cabinet full of every video game, CD, and electronic device.

I make less than $30K a year with a family of 5. I have no debt (and actually save a little each month), have plenty of food in my fridge, but my kids don't have every video game, and I don't sit on my porch with a cig dangling from my lip and a beer in my hand. I must be a terrible dad!

A defector from the former

Submitted by ant on Thu, 10/06/2011 - 2:34am.

A defector from the former KGB explained things like this as part of the destruction of the foundations of an innovative and prosperous America. He said the plan was similar to the Martial Arts idea of fighting a man stronger than you. You cannot stop his attack, so you use his own momentum and force to defeat himself. They cannot stop America from educating it's children, so they steer this reality so that it becomes ineffective or counter-productive. Instead of teaching children useful info, thinking and skills that will aid them (and, by extension, their fellow man) throughout life, such as you said, mathematics, science, etc., teach them sex-ed, multi-culturalism, 'feelings',... leftist-junk, basically. And, viola, we will have rendered ourselves a powerless joke.

disapprove of this country so much, I do wish they would just go home.

Sesame Street

Submitted by Unsane on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 6:49pm.

You know, for al the money Sesame Street brings in via merchandise and other such means, surely they can plow that cash into PBS and thus render it wholly independent of the federal government.

And, though this will come as a deep shock to an interloper Socialist like Mr. Bashir, this IS a charitable country.  It's the most charitable country on earth, in fact.  If the price of the Sesame Street swag went up, say, 10%, with notices on them stating "All proceeds go to fund PBS programs like this one", I bet even MORE funds would flow into PBS that way.

Hey parents! With garbage such as this...

Submitted by Mary Louise Turner on Wed, 10/05/2011 - 7:01pm.

Hey parents! With PC garbage such as this, it's time to seriously consider whether television is suitable at all for children, whether they're rug rats or teenagers. There is growing evidence that heavy TV viewing among children is a major factor in autism, developmental disabilities and ADD/ADHD (possibly due to the radiation coming out of a TV set).  Besides, PBS, Nickelodeon and other major children's TV providers are more interested in indoctrinating children than teaching them, as this Sesame Street character proves.   The best thing to do: turn the TV set off and teach your children about the joys of reading.  You won't regret it...

Mary,

Submitted by NavyBuckeye on Thu, 10/06/2011 - 7:07am.

I agree with your message on reading. But the amount of radiation absorbed by the body while watching is well under 1 microrem a year. You can acquire the same amount while walking to your car from your front door on a sunny day.

Today's TV sets are probably much safer that the behemoths of long ago. I grew up with those gigantic TV sets, with their bazillion knobs and tubes. I also remember being warned about not sitting too close to them. But it's still a good idea not to let children watch TV...

And yet there will be five year olds in kindergarten that will face ridicule when they notice that try as long as he wants Martin Bashir is not going to get that muppet to eat anything, not even cookies.
The Facist unionized school teacher will not point out to the class that the muppets are just being silly and that muppet gets exactly the same food as any other. Instead the teacher will imply that the child lacks compassion because he doesn't feel for a doll.
A disclaimer dhoulf be required of all of the Children television Workshop programs to stop the facists from jerking around the emotions of five year olds.
