NBC Touts Democrats Claiming Allen West Guilty of 'Sexual Harassment' Against Debbie Wasserman-Schultz
On Thursday's NBC Today, congressional correspondent Kelly O'Donnell reported on a war of words between Republican Congressman Allen West and Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz: "...West, a freshman Republican who hit 'send' on a nasty e-mail to Wasserman-Schultz....Democratic congresswomen accuse West of sexual harassment."
While O'Donnell quoted from West's email – in which he referred to Wasserman-Schultz as "vile, unprofessional, and despicable" and "not a lady" – O'Donnell failed to bring up past offensive comments Wasserman-Shultz directed toward West. In the fall of 2010, Wasserman-Schultz personally led a protest outside West's campaign office, calling him an "extremist" who "wears his extreme disrespect as a badge of honor" and "thinks it's okay to objectify and denigrate women."
O'Donnell did highlight a sound bite from Democratic California Congresswoman Jackie Sperier proclaiming: "In any other employment environment, he [West] would be subject to a sexual harassment claim for creating a hostile work environment." O'Donnell later noted: "For her part, Wasserman-Schultz says the e-mail does not bother her and blamed Republican policy." A sound bite was featured of Wasserman-Schutlz's snarky response to West: "It's not really surprising that he would crack under the pressure of having to defend that [Republican debt plan]."
O'Donnell did cite statements from West: "...his office says, 'Congressman West does not hate women, as a husband and father of two daughters.' West declined our request, but in an interview with Fox said, 'Liberals want to play victim. She is not a victim. She's been attacking Allen West for quite some time.'" If only O'Donnell had mentioned some of those past attacks.
Here is a full transcript of the July 21 segment:
7:12AM ET
SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: The battle over the debt limit has tempers flaring, and a tiff between two members of Congress from Florida has turned very personal. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell is on Capitol Hill for us this morning. Kelly, good morning.
KELLY O'DONNELL: Morning, Savannah. Well this started with kind of a slow burn, a disagreement over the debt, and then it caught fire quickly. Many Democrats are asking a Republican congressman to apologize. His office says no apology needed and that it was the Democrat who went too far.
[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: "You Are Not a Lady"; Congresswomen: GOP E-mail is "Sexual Harassment"]
A Florida feud. Two members of the House in a debt limit duel that got personal. Congresswoman Debbie Wassermann-Schultz, who is also the chair of the Democratic National Committee, and a Tea Party star, Congressman Allen West, a freshman Republican who hit 'send' on a nasty e-mail to Wasserman-Schultz.
'You are the most vile, unprofessional, and despicable member of the U.S. House of Representatives.' And there's more. But first, here's what set him off. Tuesday, West spoke in favor of the Republicans' debt-cutting bill. Then Wasserman-Schultz got up and accused him of betraying senators.
DEBBIE WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ: The gentleman from Florida who represents thousands of Medicare beneficiaries, as do I, is supportive of this plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries, unbelievable from a member from South Florida.
O'DONNELL: West's blistering e-mail told Wasserman-Schultz to 'shut the heck up' and hit a nerve with this: 'You have proven repeatedly that you are not a lady, therefore shall not be afforded due respect from me!' Democratic congresswomen accuse West of sexual harassment.
GWEN MOORE [REP. D-WI]: Just once again, we have been told that in order to be a lady, that we need to just stay in our places.
JACKIE SPEIER [REP. D-CA]: In any other employment environment, he would be subject to a sexual harassment claim for creating a hostile work environment.
O'DONNELL: In a statement to NBC News, his office says, 'Congressman West does not hate women, as a husband and father of two daughters.' West declined our request, but in an interview with Fox said, 'Liberals want to play victim. She is not a victim. She's been attacking Allen West for quite some time.' In that interview, the Congressman also complained of a double standard, saying in the past, he has been attacked with racially charged words like, quote, 'Uncle Tom, sellout, and oreo.' West, who is one of only two African-American House Republicans, began the speech that started this, Tuesday, pointing out that a Democrat confused him...
UNIDENTIFIED MEMBER OF CONGRESS: I see the gentleman from South Carolina.
O'DONNELL: ...with South Carolina Republican Tim Scott.
ALLEN WEST: And I do need to correct my colleague from Vermont, I'm not from South Carolina, I'm from Florida, but that's okay. I'm the guy with hair.
O'DONNELL: For her part, Wasserman-Schultz says the e-mail does not bother her and blamed Republican policy.
WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ: It's not really surprising that he would crack under the pressure of having to defend that.
O'DONNELL: And she makes one more point, Florida does not require congressmen reside in their districts. Allen West does not live in his. He lives nearby in her district.
WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ: As a constituent of mine, I can-
ANDREA MITCHELL: He lives in your district?
WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ: He actually lives in my district.
O'DONNELL: And in that statement from Congressman West's office to NBC, they point out that he complained to leaders in both parties about Wasserman-Schultz. Leaders aren't talking about this. But, Savannah, I can tell you that both Democrats and the Congressman from Florida, Congressman West, are using this incident to try to raise campaign cash. Savannah.
GUTHRIE: Alright, Kelly O'Donnell on the Hill for us this morning. Kelly, thank you.

Allen West is a wonderful man in so may repects: highly educated and highly intelligent, career military (a patriot), articulate, logical, truth-teller and a conservative. An American success story. Wasserman-Wasserman-Schultz,on the other hand.... typically illogical "liberal", a liar, a gossip-monger, a b%$#&. West makes me proud to be an American. Schultz makes me sick.
You go, Allen. So good to see a real man stand up to the fools!

This is the same moron that said the GOP believes illegal immigration "should in fact be a crime." What part of illegal does she not understand? Thank God for Allen West. We need more just like him that do not back down and stand toe to toe with the democrat mouthpieces. Time to fight back or we will lose what is left of the country. If he had called her a Beotch I would have sent him flowers, but he didn't. Note to Col. West - it is okay to call her the B word. The truth is never the wrong thing to do. Ms. Debbie is a racist, attacking a black man. The entire DNC are racists. Allen West refuses to dwell on the Democrat plantation.

Which one is it congresswomen? Creating a hostile work environment or sexual harrassment? Maybe it's age discrimination. However, Lt. Col. West has nothing to fear. Steadman, I mean "Holder", has ordered his DOJ not to investigate crimes where the victim is white. Talk about your irony. Besides, I'm not sure a criminal enterprise (Congress) can technically be considered a "work environment".

Little Debs' step-dad is also in hot water. While he kinda sorta went scot-free for his part of dipping into MY pockets, the feds got kind of upset that he didn't pay Uncle. Federal Tax Charges are pending.
I wonder why Barry didn't intercede....seeing how he's so tight with Little Debs and the Wasserman Crime family.
Oh yeah, if you are bored, google Debs' mom to find the story of how she got into politics. Back in the day, there weren't enough "good" democrats to hand out patronage jobs to, and Debs' dad was previously occupied in a patronage job, so they gave the job to his wife. That's how things are done here in Deep Dark Blue Broward County, and always have been.
Little Deb's isn't fit to lick the soles of Allen West's shoes. She was one of the biggest proponents of ObamaCare, which cut a half a TRILLION out of Medicare. Yet there she is spewing the democrat talking points.
Oh how I hope this little termagant gets gerrymandered out of her district.

St. Pete is Florida's 11th.
Your new Rep. is Kathy Castor, a democrat and legacy politician/government employee. Her father and her brother are judges. Her mother is Betty Castor, who was a Florida legislator, and also the President of the University of South Florida, as well as the Florida Secretary of Education.
IOW, Rep. Castor is a member of the "entitled class". Tampa/St. Pete is snowbird heaven, probably inhabited by a slew of liberals from the northeast, hence the democrat strong hold. West doesn't appear to be guilty of sexism--nor does it appear Wasserman-Schultz is accusing him ot it--but he does appear to be guilty of incredibly poor manners and unwarranted character attacks.
Wasserman-Schultz: "The gentleman from Florida supports a plan that would increase costs for Medicare beneficiaries, unbelievable from a member from south Florida."
West: "You Are Not a Lady...you are the most vile, unprofessional and despicable member of the U.S. House of Representatives....So shut the heck up."
And THAT'S excusable since he didn't include any obscenities in his tirade?
He reportedly also falsely claimed to have apologized for the remarks.
Now, if Wasserman-Schultz has been the source of any of the Uncle Tom allegations, then I don't blame him for retaliating forcefully. But I haven't seen any evidence that she was.

I understand there is a history of acrimony between the two. I have no idea who said what first.
Accusations of supporting allegedly bad policy or supposedly harmful legislation--which one person believes is the gospel truth and another person believes is a damnable lie--is standard fare both inside and outside the halls of Congress. That's been going on for over 200 years.
As far as which party has gotten away with worse, I'll be happy to contribute to a forum where a comparative analysis of objectionable comments uttered or written by Dems and Repubs and pundits for both parties during the modern political era can be conducted.

Yes, I know what she said, and how she said it. It's the same as saying that since Ms. W-Schultz has read Huck Finn, she believes black people should regularly be referred to by the (n) word. Cute liberal trick. You're being overly dismissive of the history between her and Col. West.

I don't know that the association was so clever. He wrote articles for a biker magazine. I haven't seen the magazine or his essays. Personally, I'm not a fan of guilt by association. Some are. She did not attack his character? She is lying through her teeth regarding CCB, and by extension, impugning the Colonel's character by noting his support of the policy. It is one thing to disagree with the policy, but we all know for a fact that Democrats have made a policy decision to claim Republicans want to hurt seniors when it couldn't be further from the truth. She's not disagreeing with policy, unless we're simply talking about the policy of running for office. She was disingenuous and cowardly, and unfairly maligned a sitting member of Congress behind his back. Her attack was far more egregious, and entirely unprovoked. He should not apologize.
Finally, calling it demeaning only highlights her personal political vulnerability and personal lack of fortitude, as well as the hypocrisy of suggesting that he can't handle the pressure of his office and she deserves an apology.

Shultz has asked fellow congresswomen to support her. Yet she has not once defended her fellow congresswoman, Michelle Bachmann. Lies and hypocrisy are the liberal mantra these days. What was the LIE about West that was entered into the congressional records? I obviously don't condone lying. Nor do I agree with insulting comments made about Malkin or Palin or Bachmann. But spare me the concern for poor little demure and defenseless Ann Coulter. She has been calling me and fellow Democrats--who love this country as much as she--TRAITORS for far too long. Just as an aside, seniors have already been affected by ObamaCare. First, my payroll taxes increased by $50 per month even though I earn less than $30k per year. My medicare payments have also increased by $25 per quarter. She's lying if she tries to blame these changes to coverage and increase in taxes and cost of benefits to anyone but AFHCA. "As far as which Party has gotten away with worse, I'll be happy to contribute to a forum where a comparative analysis of objectionable comments written by Dems and Repubs and pundits for both parties during the modern political era can be conducted."
NewsBusters exists to " expose and combat liberal media bias", but after four plus years here, Jer apparently believes that just means being unfair to Joe Scarborough by only mentioning the Scab's siding with Liberals or Democrats when ol' Joe does just that.
With Jer as a house liberal, and untold numbers of wacko lib trolls wandering the halls around here, NB's IS a forum on the modern political era that references comparative analyses of objectionable comments, though not necessarily written, by Dems and Repubs and pundits.
As a liberal Democrat on a conservative site (even though here of his own volition), Jer must feel that his being outnumbered is the sole reason his myriad liberal posts don't count towards establishing a "comparative analysis forum".

The guidelines state: Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment
Can't see how this qualifies generally or specifically.
First of all, you'd have to assume that calling DWS "vile" was in a sexual content. Now, I personally don't find that hard to imagine, but I seriously doubt Col West has that intimate knowledge.
But more importantly, what are we to think of a white, Jewish woman when she calls out -not in name, but by referencing his position, by inference- and insults a black man on the floor of the House of Representative? Any chance she wouldn't sit with him in the House cafeteria? I'll bet this pasty white woman wouldn't condescend to spending even an hour alone discussing the shared problems of their Florida districts together, probably for fear of what a black man might do to her. And now she's saying he's unfit for the job? Why, because he's black? I don't know, I'd recommend Col West keep his disctance; that "poking his chest" might become "spit in his face". Racist pig.
