NBC's 'Today' Frets Celebrations After bin Laden's Death Were 'Very Disturbing' to Children

On NBC's Today on Wednesday, co-host Matt Lauer worried about Americans celebrating the death of Osama bin Laden: "...your children are going to see, and have already seen, people in the streets celebrating about the death of someone and that's a contradictory image for them." Today contributor and psychiatrist Gail Saltz replied: "Absolutely, very disturbing for them."

The segment was on how to talk to children about the killing of bin Laden and Saltz speculated that kids may ask: "Why are people partying, being happy that anybody was killed?" She suggested those who celebrated may now regret their actions: "I think it's really important to talk about this, because what you saw was a lot of people who, in the impulse of the moment, reacted in a way that later on they may not be happy about."

Saltz further declared:

...this is a conversation really about moral development that you're going to help your child with. So do they feel right about people partying, and smiling, and looking happy? Does it look different enough from recent pictures we've seen of what went on in Egypt and so on? I think those are the kinds of – and I think it's fine for you to say, 'I don't think they should be celebrating,' if you don't.

Almost as an afterthought she briefly entertained an alternative perspective: "Or 'I think they were celebrating because of their patriotism.'"

At the end of the segment, Lauer concluded: "And always when you're having these discussions try to emphasize things like open-mindedness and-" Both Saltz and child development specialist Robyn Silverman quickly joined in the political correctness. Saltz finished Lauer's sentence: "Tolerance." Silverman agreed: "So important." Saltz then added: "And say that this man looked a certain way doesn't mean that everybody who looks that way is a bad person." Silverman chimed in: "Absolutely." Lauer agreed: "That's important."

Here is a transcript of the May 4 exchange:

8:21AM ET

(...)

MATT LAUER: Some typical questions, this one's from our viewers. 'I talked to my girls about it, they are 8, 10, and 12. They asked me why he was killed and why they didn't just put him in jail where all bad people go.' How do you answer that question?

ROBYN SILVERMAN [CHILD DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST]: I mean, it's a tough question because we – that's what we're taught, that they should go away. But we need to help them see that while this guy was alive, people were frightened about what he could do next, no matter where he was. So the people who were in charge of the safety of our country made a decision that he couldn't be alive.

LAUER: And this kind of plays on that but takes it to the next step, Gail. We're – your children are going to see, and have already seen, people in the streets celebrating about the death of someone and that's a contradictory image for them.

DR. GAIL SALTZ [PSYCHIATRIST AND TODAY CONTRIBUTOR]: Absolutely, very disturbing for them. Why are people partying, being happy that anybody was killed? I think it's really important to talk about this, because what you saw was a lot of people who, in the impulse of the moment, reacted in a way that later on they may not be happy about.

In other words, the question of what is the difference between justice here and revenge? These are the kinds – because this is a conversation really about moral development that you're going to help your child with. So do they feel right about people partying, and smiling, and looking happy? Does it look different enough from recent pictures we've seen of what went on in Egypt and so on? I think those are the kinds of – and I think it's fine for you to say, 'I don't think they should be celebrating,' if you don't. Or 'I think they were celebrating because of their patriotism.'

LAUER: Robin, let me try this one on you, and I don't have a lot of time left. But it seems as if in the very near future we will either see a photo or not see a photo of the body of Osama bin Laden. Your children are going to be possibly exposed to that photo and it's going to be disturbing to them, they're going to have questions. How do you handle it?

SILVERMAN: You wait for them to come to you. Limit media exposure as much as you can. Keep routines similar and be available to your children as much as possible for their concerns and their questions.

LAUER: And always when you're having these discussions try to emphasize things like open-mindedness and-

SALTZ: Tolerance

LAUER: Tolerance and things like that.

SILVERMAN: So important.

SALTZ: And say that this man looked a certain way doesn't mean that everybody who looks that way is a bad person.

SILVERMAN: Absolutely.

LAUER: That's important. Gail and Robin, thank you both very much.

So, when muslim children dance

in the streets as Americans are killed, does it "disturb" them? No. They are taught to hate christians and America from birth. That's muslim culture. Nice, huh?

I don't need a shrink who looks like he sits down to pee to tell me how to tell my kids that America's worst enemy was caught and killed.

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 10:29am.

Check this story out: http://news.yahoo.com/s/pew/20110505/ts_pew/40vs42doesislamencourageviol... results from Pew Does Islam Encourage Violence? Media & political brain washing does work in covering up Islam. Majority say they are no more likely to do violence than ANY other religion. Arrrh! These people still actively STONE people, cut off hands, force xeS & marriage, kill & enslave Christians, kill converts & on & on! Such unbelievable blindness & bigotry against the INNOCENT! All in the PC god name of "fairness!" Zero objectivity!

------ snip in-part ----------

In a poll taken prior to the recent outbreak of anti-U.S. violence in Afghanistan over a U.S. pastor’s burning of a Koran, the public remained divided over whether Islam is more likely than other religions to encourage violence among its believers, with 40% saying the Islamic religion is more likely than others to encourage violence while 42% said it is not. The national Pew Research Center survey conducted Feb. 22-March 1 found that most young people (58%) rejected the idea that Islam is more likely than other religions to promote violence while a 45%-plurality of those ages 50 and older (45%) said Islam is more likely. Political and ideological divisions were even wider: By roughly three-to-one (66% to 21%), conservative Republicans said Islam encourages violence more than other religions. Moderate and liberal Republicans were divided -- 46% said Islam is more likely to encourage violence, 47% said it is not. By more than two-to-one (61% to 29%), liberal Democrats felt that Islam is not more likely than other religions to promote violence. Conservative and moderate Democrats, by a smaller margin (48% to 31%), agreed. Fully 67% of those who agree with the Tea Party movement said Islam is more associated with violence than other religions. Among those who disagree with the Tea Party, the balance of opinion was nearly reversed -- 62% said Islam is no more likely than other religions to promote violence while 24% said it is. Among the large share of the public that offers no opinion of the Tea Party, 38% said Islam is more likely to promote violence while about the same number (41%) disagreed.

I saw the photos, also. But then I read the article. And watch out -- there's a push now to claim that bin laden was shot down in cold blood, unarmed and innocent. The Reuters' article emphasized that "there was what seemed to be a green, children's toy water pistol near the body". Know what that implies, don't you? That we had gung-ho "cowboy" out-of-control commandos shooting wildly at everything and anything.

Anything to blame America. Wonder how long it's going to take for obama's justice dept to investigate, and then shut down, Seal Team 6?

Radical, It is horrific,

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 05/04/2011 - 9:19pm.

Radical,

It is horrific, much more horrific what happened on 911 than we can imagine. I was reading an article written by one of the survivors of the Towers. One of the thing that he vividly described is the headless bodies of countless of the airplane passengers that he saw. Airplane seats holding destroyed bodies, horrificly burnt and missing parts.

He also described how people on the ground heard AND FELT the splash of the bodies of individuals who rather die falling to the ground than burnt alive.

None of us can imagine the carnage, not one of us that the 911 attacks caused.

why doesn't NBC do a round table of what these horrific scenes seen by 911 survivors can lead to?!

what's more disturbing for kids

Submitted by ctophfranko on Wed, 05/04/2011 - 6:13pm.

is that we all have to be a bunch of hand-wringing pansies who have can't have a single unifying moment in a long hard war. Liberals are really torn up, on one hand, Fearless Leader has all the momentum, on the other, we killed an unarmed man in a sovereign nation without its permission using intel that we got from "torture" and executed by an "extra-legal death squad." It's the same question we ask whenever 44 does something, what if 43 had done it? Kucinich would be drawing up the impeachment article as we speak.
Another thought, this could be a "teachable moment" for kids, if you're evil people will be happy when you die, don't be evil.

Submitted by tombaker on Wed, 05/04/2011 - 6:27pm.

SHOCKING CELEBRATION OF KILLING VIEWED BY CHILDREN!
NBC reports today that scenes of celebrations after the killing of "The Bad Witch" were shown by irresponsible parents who let their children see the Wizard of Oz.

Matt Lauer said, " The section where the people were singing "ding dong the Witch is gone" is a terribly traumatic to me, and anyone I think should be allowed to view this movie. We have intellectuals with degrees that shall determine what your children can view and understand." Lauer giggled and said it was all for the best. "

Lauer went on to say that all children should always believe that the boogie man, remains and will never die. And that who is to judge if the Witch was really "bad or not"

Leftist morality police

Submitted by ThisnThat on Wed, 05/04/2011 - 7:41pm.

And exactly what has Matt Lauer said recently about the daily killings of babies in this nation's abortion clinics? Has he consulted child psychologists about that, yet? Is he wringing his hands? Talking about "tolerance"?

And how does Lauer apply this phrase to that situation: "because this is a conversation really about moral development that you're going to help your child with."

We all know how the left works. No morality in day-to-day living situations. But let us knock off an evil, non-white person -- then all hell breaks loose with the leftist morality police. Hypocrites, all.

I was surprised at the enomous reaction in the streets of America, and I did grow up in an old fashioned home, where it was considered wrong to cheer someones death.. but that's more like, I know daddy didn't like him sweetheart, but we do not act happy that anyone died, even cousin........... you know? That's a personal level morality,

But to cheer OBL's death is more like VJ or VE day than a personal celerbration, folks see this as a major victory in a war that has few easy to count like this.

Buty the MSM over reaction and nanny statish scolding?

Screw them, where do they get the right to imply, what a good liberal (let alone an American) should think and act like? They get that as a new journolista directive, or collectively can't stand to see Americans enjoy a victory in a long harsh war?

Where do they get the right to lecture anyone?

I was ambilivent before, now I'm angry as Hell at the jackassery of them judging America over this, when they made a thousand cultural excuses for Arabs dancing in the streets on 911... we shouldn't be mean and judge them..

they sure as Hell are judging now..

Dave that makes me want to

Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 11:01am.

Dave that makes me want to jump up & down to celebrate when the "new #1" is brought down. PCism is dangerous as you are duly noting. Justice must be celebrated when there is due moral cause. Unity builds a society. John Lennon and the likes said there is a way w/o war & death. This is "difficult" when you have an enemy sworn to kill you for no cause other than not converting. We have a duty to survive & protect our families.

First, "The Children"

Submitted by Chris Norman on Wed, 05/04/2011 - 11:19pm.

The question of public celebrations aside, I can't help but notice that, once again, the liberal media invoke "the children" so they can express their own views on a subject. I suppose that there's a chance that over the coming days we'll be treated to the questions on how this affected "women" and "minorities"...

Let's make the 2012 campaign: "The War on Error"

...if all the celebrations had focused more on Obama and it looked like everyone was thanking and supporting him more, would more of the media be playing up the jubilation instead of criticizing it? Because it seems a lot like sour grapes because Obama didn't get as big of a bump as they'd hoped.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

They either have unrealistic

Submitted by TerryWest on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 12:04am.

They either have unrealistic ideas of just how many children watched any celebration, or they are once again using children as human shields to hide behind in order to voice their rhetoric and opinions.
Perhaps their own network looped a celebration or searched them out but I have not seen any significant celebration coverage myself other then once, a half minute clip outside the White house last Sunday night.

America is happy the terrorist is dead but we didn't see them hit the streets signing praises to the administration across the nation, and now these liberals turn what must surly be a disappointment into condescending story time for parents, as if it was their idea and reflex value system all along that was against celebration.

Actually, I think children

Submitted by mostlymoderate on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 1:34am.

Actually, I think children understand exactly why people are celebrating and why it is important to celebrate the death of a horribly evil, psychopathic murderer like Usama Bin Laden. I especially believe that young boys understand why we had to kill this evil bastard.

It is only when these children get older they might have an issue with it because by that time, the liberal establishment in this country will have de-masculinized them, made them feel sorry for villain's in stories, and made them afraid to stand up for their God-given right to live a life free of bull$hit terrorist scumbags that need to be eliminated from the face of the Earth.

I truly believe we are all born knowing what is right and what is not right and only a liberal can alter that sacred truth.

I only wish the death of Osama would have been a little slower because this degenerate killed thousands of my fellow Americans.

America didn't become strong by acting like Dr. Phil. America became strong by acting like John Wayne.

The celebrants were kids on 9-11

Submitted by stunned on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 1:21am.

I saw the crowds that night. Most were in their twenties. They were in school in the 3rd-12th grade on 9-11 and many of their childhoods ended that day. Bin Laden was their boogie man, the stuff of their nightmares, and by God it must have been damn good for their mental health to know he was dead. I have a 19 year old niece who is a mild mannered kid and I was shocked when she told me she danced alone around the living room cheering when she heard the news then spent the entire night up talking on the phone and on the computer with friends celebrating. I asked her why??? She looked at me as if I was crazy and informed me that this was the second most important day of her life (9-11 was the the first).

I spoke with her mom, my sister, and we really had no idea how truly those kids were affected by that day and we live outside NYC. Our family and close friends lost no one but we did know people who escaped the towers that day. Our niece had classmates who lost family members, siblings and relatives of friends have gone off to war, and Bin Laden has been a dominating figure in their lives. My kids (12-8) were not the least bit upset by the celebrations. Their take on it was a really bad guy was killed by our soldiers and will not hurt anyone else so what's the problem? My 12 year old son told me he and his friends had a blast at lunch this week coming up with dead Bin Laden jokes.

A kid's world is black and white, good and evil and it is only grown-up libs wallowing in a world of shades of gray who are having mental health issues.

Thank You so much for your entry. See above, I tried to get across the exact same message as you. The liberal panty-wastes that have been running our media and our schools for over 40 years in this country have been teaching us to not be proud of America, that fighting is bad and that nothing is worth killing or dying for. At the same time, young boys are being taught to be metro-sexuals that love to talk about their feelings and to not be overly aggressive. Sometimes, I wonder just how the hell the U.S. Marines and the Navy Seals are still capable of finding such fine marines to fight our wars for us.

I too worried about the state of our young just a few years ago

Submitted by stunned on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 1:50am.

LOL just a few years ago I worried about the state of the nation's young until I was surrounded by them. I was a flaming lib myself when I was young and some of the best times I had were at no-nuke rallies cursing Reagan (God bless him) but I grew out of it. The kids coming up (the 9-11 generation) are not as flaky as we were. The rotten economy, the wars and the radical Islam have made them tougher. The 24/7 media has meant they get more news and hear somem conservative voices (never heard any growing up myself in the 70's besides my parents) that reinforce what they hear at home. Most moms of boys are not raising whimpy boys and will not tolerate whinning from them (though there are always a few exceptions) but we will not tolerate bullies either.

The youth did vote for Obama because they they are trusting at that age and believed what he said, I know a few grown-ups that should have known better who did so too, but they won't be fooled again as my niece's 21 year old boy friend has explained in GREAT detail. (LOL he is not happy with Obama). The young men I know who have served in our armed services, those who are now first responders in police depts (God they are getting younger every day, I have jeans older than some of them) including the NYPD and NYFD who were kids on 9-11 are tough strong young men who have performed wonderfully over the years. I worry more about the 50+ crowd who have the numbers and power to really screw things up.

Why are kids confused over joy re OBL's death?? ACA

Submitted by acaiguana on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 6:48am.

Um, because their parents are stupid?

This is called war people.  Yes, war.  Bin Laden declared war on the United States of America and unleashed his rag-tag army on the Western World and its very foundation; that of Judeo-Christian thought and history.

And in war there is no redemption through a civilized 'process' so loved by the bureaucratic attorneys for the defense nor is there time for the beloved diplomatic processes of our bureaucratic State Department.

In war our brave men and women in uniform swallow their fears and go forth into battle, the purpose of which is to destroy the enemy and reduce their capabilities and their morale.

In war we rejoice when a battle is won and we redouble our efforts when we are attacked on our under-belly of indifference to our enemies and our pampered elitism and pseudo-intellectual masturbation regarding the high ground of appeasement.

This is a war against an evil stalking the earth which knows no bounds.

That is why, my child, people are in the streets cheering the death of another tyrant amid the fight against tyranny over the minds of men.

We are a free people.  We fight the good fight.

Submitted by Motormouth KOS on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 9:55am.

So, Matt Liar and Merrydope Viera are all concerned about how the kiddies will react to Americans cheering the death of mass murderer UBL? This is your typical pile of cow dung from this joke of a network who will hopefully be out of business within 10 years....

This misdirection further serves the Leftist monologues for Obama's Cheerleaders:

- Instead of questioning Professor Pinhead's decision to assassinate UBL, without "mirandizing" him, they turn it on the "cheering hordes"

- Instead of asking the nation if they knew how to "talk to their kids" in 2001 when the video of planes hitting the towers and people jumping to deaths, they balthered on about how Bush kept reading to the kids in Florida, and then was "hiding in Air Force 1"...

- Instead of a modest acknowledgement that rendition and aggressive interrogation works, these ass-clowns preach "tolerance"

If conservatives really had their sh@t together, they would boycott everything on NBC, the shows the products, all of it. And after they are brought to their knees or out of business, then take on CBS. The tripe that these networks are pushing is an outrage.

3rd World Country Mentality

Submitted by Kimnota on Thu, 05/05/2011 - 10:12am.

I also found this celebration disturbing. Especially considering these are the same people who boo the military and the very tactics that lead to this action. We're all happy that justice has been served, but no one is freed as a result of Bin Laden's death. Western cultures generally celebrate freedom while 3rd world countries celebrate killings. However, I was never concerned that these kids need to learn open-mindedness or tolerance and about drawing conclusions over how a person looks. These people are despicable. If anything a lesson should be taught about how we should have faced down this man's evil long ago and not let political correctness stand in the way of safety and preserving our values.

My ten year old replied "Nope, he deserved to die. And I hope I get to play as Seal Team 6 in the next Call of Duty game so I can blow his head off too!!!"

My wife said she told him that was wrong. and he then said "No Mom, what was wrong was flying a plane into two buildings. Two buildings in America, two buildings with Americans that died. That is wrong and he got what he deserved...kapow...a bullet to the head!!!! It's called justice....don't be a wuss!!"

She said my 7 year old chimed in "Heck yeah!!!!" and then they gave each other high fives and ran off yelling "Navy seals rule!!!"

As a mom of a 12 year old boy I understand you wife's initial concern regarding your son's reaction and warn her it gets worse. LOL I laughed out loud reading his comments as they mirrored the comments of my son and his buddies as I drove the car pool from soccer practice to their boy scout meeting on Tuesday evening. "Double tap, yeah, OK, Hooorah, dunk the junk" ect ect joking galore. So much for the demasculating of young men today hee hee hee it didn't take. Kids out there Sunday night, liberal and conservative, college age and older who flooded the streets and universities to the horror of their much more liberal seniors was a real shock. Our military and seal teams grew up with Bin Laden and they are as fine a group of warriors as any generation has fielded before. Just let her know children still see the world in black and white, good and evil and their reaction was quite normal and moral.

As I posted before these kids grew up the Bin Laden the boogie man and not a single kid over the age of 5 didn't know the name or what 9-11 was even before Sunday. They lived with the knowlege of that man their entire lives as far back as many can remember and by God it was very mentally healthy for them to hear the bastard is dead. Ah, she knows well the minds of boys. We have 3 (13,10,7) and all of them love guns, the army, the marines and anything military really. Being ex military I have pride in them loving it. The 7 and 10 year old are constantly on the military channel watching the documentaries on WW2, Korea and now the Iraq war.

She is very liberal and tries hard to talk to them. She says I brain wash them but I don't. I just answer their questions truthfully. I also tell them when I am giving my opinion rather than fact. I always say there are two sides to a story and find out both before you make up your mind.

I love that they are tough boys who like guns and America. We had the game Homefront for Xbox. It is a game that has the Koreans storming America and putting citizens into work/labor camps, executing kids and other citizens (Great story line really). And my 7 year old was watching my older son and myself play it. He started crying during a scene where the Koreans were forcing Americans into line and making them listen. I told him to leave the room and maybe he shouldn't watch it. He said he was crying because he could never let some one come to America and tell him or his friends what to do...he would rather die. He said it made him sad that those Americans just did as they were told. Then he smiled and said "That's why I'm joining the Marines when I'm 18" and then he ran off to play with his cars.

He makes me proud.
