CBS 'Early Show' Blames Winter Storms on Global Warming

By Kyle Drennen | February 02, 2011 | 11:27

Speaking to physicist Michio Kaku on Wednesday's CBS Early Show, co-host Chris Wragge fretted over the recent series of severe winter storms and wondered: "...nine storms in seven weeks, why is this happening?...a lot of people want to talk about global warming and thinking that that may actually come into play here. Is that accurate? Is that having an effect on what's going on?"

Dr. Kaku agreed with the suggestion: "Yes. It seems to violate common sense, but as the Earth begins to heat up, that means more moist air in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico on average. Which creates more precipitation, and eventually more snow." Wragge followed up: "Is this going to continue?" Kaku argued: "...on average, temperatures are going to rise. Remember, last year was the hottest year ever recorded in the history of science, next to 2005, since 1880. So the Earth is heating up. We can debate exactly what's driving it. But, hey, get used to it. We're going to have more energy sloshing around the Earth, more extremes, and swings."

Prior to discussing the supposed impact of global warming, Wragge briefly asked about other theories "behind this extreme weather." Kaku explained the idea of the weather simply being the result of natural climate cycles: "One theory says it's random, natural fluctuations in the weather. For example, we have something called El Nina in the Pacific around the equator, which is helping to divert cold air into the United States." The rest of the segment focused on the global warming theory.

As Brad Wilmouth earlier reported on NewsBusters, ABC has also attempted to blame the harsh winter weather on global warming. On the January 21 World News, anchor Diane Sawyer declared: "...millions of people across the East saying enough already with the snow and ice and cold. Another winter storm roared through today. More records were toppled, and it heightened that question: Do the leading scientists now agree that this is global warming? And this is what winter will be from now on?"

Here is a full transcript of the February 2 Early Show segment:

7:34AM ET

CHRIS WRAGGE: Here to explain why we're having such extreme weather is physics professor Michio Kaku of the City University of New York and author of the upcoming book, 'Physics of the Future' Doctor, good to have you with us. I think everyone wants to know, very simply, nine storms in seven weeks, why is this happening? Why is this happening?

[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Mother Nature's Wrath; Explaining This Winter's Extreme Weather]

MICHIO KAKU: Well, snowstorms take place when dry, ice-cold weather from Canada and Alaska bump up into moist, warm air from the Gulf of Mexico. Monster storms like this are caused by fluctuations which draw more icy weather from the north and there's more moist air in the Gulf of Mexico because of increased temperature.

WRAGGE: What are some of the theories behind this extreme weather, though?

KAKU: One theory says it's random, natural fluctuations in the weather. For example, we have something called El Nina in the Pacific around the equator, which is helping to divert cold air into the United States. And also the North Atlantic oscillations, air currents in the North Atlantic, which again is helping to pull down, pull down more cold air into North America.

WRAGGE: I think a lot of people want to talk about global warming and thinking that that may actually come into play here. Is that accurate? Is that having an effect on what's going on?

KAKU: Yes. It seems to violate common sense, but as the Earth begins to heat up, that means more moist air in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico on average. Which creates more precipitation, and eventually more snow. So global warming is caused when sunlight hits the Earth, and turns into infrared, red radiation, heat radiation shown here, and it's sort of like a roach motel, light checks in but the heat does not necessarily escape.

WRAGGE: So I think the other big question people have, is this going to – I mean is this going to continue? Or is there a light at the end of the tunnel?

KAKU: Global warming simply says more oscillations. So we have fluctuations, but on average, temperatures are going to rise. Remember, last year was the hottest year ever recorded in the history of science, next to 2005, since 1880. So the Earth is heating up. We can debate exactly what's driving it. But, hey, get used to it. We're going to have more energy sloshing around the Earth, more extremes, and swings. Flooding in one area and ice-cold temperatures in another.

WRAGGE: Is this the same weather pattern, though, that's affecting us that's affecting other regions around the world? You've had problems in Brazil with mud slides, Australia's going through some weather issues now. Is this the same?

KAKU: Similar. El Nina, cold weather around the equator, is contributing to what's happening in Australia. And I was in Brazil just two weeks ago, where they had monster mud slides, killed hundreds of people because of flooding. Massive flooding. And it's summertime now in Brazil.

WRAGGE: In El Nina, what are the patterns here? Is it every couple of years?

KAKU: Yeah, El Nina and the North Atlantic oscillations go back and forth every few years and they last a few months. And so we have both effects helping to bring down cold air from the north, while the Earth itself is heating up, creating more moisture in the Gulf of Mexico. And when the two meet, watch out.

WRAGGE: Yeah, we were talking about it earlier. You know, it's a big Super Bowl weekend. In Dallas, they're having some weather issues. And people were saying, 'Wow, you know what, in three year's time, there's a Super Bowl that's going to take place outdoors here in New York,' with weather like this, it's going to be a tough, tough go.

KAKU: That's right. It's going to be a flip of the coin.

WRAGGE: Yeah, alright. Thank you very much. Good to see you this morning.

Broken brain - broken logic

Submitted by neutron on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 12:29pm.

I'm a scientist -- a Technical Fellow -- and these psuedo scientists and Catostophic Anthropogenic Global Warming (CAGW) alarmists are playing the pea under the shells game with the public.

Setting aside that Dr Jones of the UK's Climate Research Unit (CRU) (the head guy at the heart of the UN's IPCC claim for CAGW) admitted to the BBC that there has been no warming since 1998, in fact, we are cooling (google "hide the decline"). Let's examine the pea shell game above.

Yes, more warmth increases ocean and lake evaporation, which increases precipitation. What about the cold? If we were warming, the precipitation would be RAIN and not SNOW, SLEET, or FREEZING RAIN!

The laws of thermodynamics and the physics of "conservation of energy" indicate that the cold can't happen during warming. Some CAGW alarmists claim it is hotter elsewhere, while it is freezing cold here, but again, I point to Dr Jones of the CRU. Also, there are several FOIA inquiries into Hansen changing temperatures in the NASA / NOAA data, and the UK MetOff changing the official temperature data as well. We're not talking about massaging the data, we're talking about regular and continuing changing of historical temerpatures going back hundreds of years to get the charts to "hide the decline."

Because he disagrees with your religious beliefs or because you think no physicist would think that it rains when it's warm and snows when its cold?

I have a chemistry degree and have used it to make a good living for three decades.  No company that had to show a profit would invest a nickle in the kind of junk science the warm mongers are pushing, not a nickle.  There is no way to even establish a base line for a 3.5B year old highly dynamic system like earth, let alone reliably predict trends.  Their massaged data is rubbage, their techniques hopelessly flawed, and their dog ate the original data.  Yes indeed, we should certainly send vast amounts of money to them.

Neutron, thank you for a very good explanation of the trickery used by the "there's money to be made in this" man made global warming liars. I've bumped into two of these types in the last month and could not believe my ears when they begin saying that the record cold and snow winters we are having are  being caused by "man made global warming". They couldn't explain to me why this was tha case, but they knew for sure it was so. Cult members rarely question their leaders or their crazy behavior, I suppose.

Just a couple of comments.

First, Michio Kaku isn't a "pseudo scientist". The guy help found string theory and is a major player in quantum field theory. Hell, one of the text books I used in a field theory class in grad school was written by him.

Having said that, I'm not sure why a guy who specializes in high energy physics is talking about global warming. One could argue that he isn't really saying anything all that complicated but it still seems sort of odd to me.

Regarding thermo and conservation of energy (and you are being a bit redundant since the First Law of Thermo is basically conservation of energy), keep in mind that the Earth's atmosphere is a non-equilibrium chaotic system. That's pretty much the most complicated kind of system you can study in thermo.

Trying to actually describe such systems, let alone predicting how they will evolve, is horribly complicated. Simply invoking thermo or conservation of energy doesn't really do much for your argument (unless you could elaborate).

As for your contention that global warming precluded areas from becoming colder, I can offer a physical analogy. Consider a bathtub filled to the rim with water. If a take an empty pitcher and quickly scoop up some water, what happens?

Well, since I've removed water, the overall water level will go down. But at the same time, the act of taking that water out will cause waves to appear on the surface. In some places, the water level will be very low (lower than what it would be if we slowly removed the same amount of water without causing waves) and in some places the water level will be higher that what it was before we scooped out the water (and will spill out onto the floor).

It can be argued that something similar happens when the Earth's atmosphere experiences sudden (at least on the time scale of the Earth) changes - like a increase in overall temperature. You get these oscillations which result in extremes in both direction.

Now, to be honest - I don't work in atmospheric science, I haven't reached a decision about global warming (anthropomorphic or otherwise) one way or the other and I don't know if my analogy is a good one or not as far as the atmosphere goes. I'm just putting it out there to get across the point that it's complicated and using basic concept from freshmen physics isn't really going to provide much insight.

Living on the Gulf coast,

Submitted by danbo on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 6:46pm.

Living on the Gulf coast, I've noticed a pattern. On TV, I'll watch nasty weather hit Denver. Than a day later, Dallas then a few days more me. Then Atlanta. And eventually the NE is moaning about a nasty weather.

But it's been doing this a long time.

But to imply this was caused by built up warmth in the gulf is less than honest or uninformed. The gulf is cold right now. It's running as much a 3* C below normal. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/tafb/atl_anom.gif

And just coming in from UAH. http://www.drroyspencer.com/2011/02/uah-update-for-january-2011-global-t...

Climate is a multi variant arena. To pretend it's about only one variable is less than honest. We've shifted into another natural cycle. And warmers are trying to pretend it's about CO2.

I agree it's less than honest. That's why I haven't formed an opinion one way or the other and it's why I never get into detailed discussions on this topic about things like ice cores or gas concentration levels or whatever.

The fact is, no one really knows what's going on and none of these arguments seem very convincing - one way or the other - to me.

I understand how more moisture could cause more snow.  What I want to see this guy explain is how increased moisture could account for colder temperatures.  It's 15 degrees F in TEXAS!!!  That's not from "increased moisture".

When it's hotter than normal and there is no snow, it's because of global warming.  When it's colder than normal with more snow, it's because of global warming.  I'm just waiting for a perfectly average year so they can blame it on global warming.

The water cycle is not the cause of cooling

Submitted by neutron on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 12:36pm.

ArcherB almost has it right. Increased warmth leads to more evaporation that leads to more precipitation, but if the earth is warming, it would be more warm rain, and not snow, sleet or freezing rain. The cold had to come from someplace (or more exactly, the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics says the heat that would have made it rain went somewhere, and left it cold, maing the rain into snow.)

Don't fall for the quick distraction answers tossed out to the sound-bite media. Take the time to read the scientific papers, or at least read the summaries of the technical papers at the sceptic web site http://wattsupwiththat.com/ .

Yep - "Declining Snow Cover Causes Record Snow Cover"

Submitted by Gary Hall on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 12:56pm.

"Yes. It seems to violate common sense, but as the Earth begins to heat up, that means ...."

Whoa there buddy; the earth, during this warming cycle, began to heat up a few hundred years back - long before according to the climate alarmists view [their accepted theory]  that it was the sudden increase in CO2 during the mid 20th century that has led to the warming.

Over at Icecap.us, we find this delicious related stab at an analysis noted by the  National Science Foundation: "Declining Snow Cover Causes Record Snow Cover."

Naturally, I'd rather curious about what this year's increasing snow cover is going to cause next year.

The AGW alarmists usually point to the "fact" (hee hee) that the recent warming in the northern latitudes is unprecedented and that this is mostly in the summer, resulting in unprecedented summer ice loss of the Arctic ice cap. Other than the "fact" that looking at NASA's own temp charts throws a lot of questions into that line of thought [ see Greenland temp history, here - looks like a  pretty solid cooling trend since 1940], take a peak this temperature data from a recent peer reviewed study of ice cores in Alaska: Alaska's modern summer temperatures are cooler than in the past.

This new data shows what we have seen time and time again in scientific studies; each successive warming period has topped out a bit cooler than the preceding warming period, approximately 1000, 2000, and 2700 years ago. Folks - the trend is cooling - not warming.

More snow or more precipitation?

Submitted by pockets64 on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 2:41pm.

I can see that global warming could cause more precipitation.  But if the world were getting warmer, we would be seeing more rain year-round (more in tune with the theory's predictions) not more snow.

But the theory predicts both droughts and floods, depending on what's happening on any given day.

Not exactly science, is it?

More snow too

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 2:54pm.

It's predictable that as more surface water evaporates, the amount of rain and snow would increase just as a function of its dispersal to both warm and cold climates.

But none of this proves actual climate change.

Why, it seems that particular argument portends that Mother Nature manages herself and actually comes down on the side of the debate that taxation and emissions controls are meaningless and futile.

In order to augment and support their undefendable position, they are doing more damage to it every time they speak or write. I love it and I hope they continue to make fools of themselves. More people see this foolishness for what it is everyday. Good!

I posted this on the thread

Submitted by Hunter12 on Wed, 02/02/2011 - 3:41pm.

I posted this on the thread above and got no response from the AGWers there.  I guess they didn't reply because they were all playing here.  Of course, I really don't expect a reply.

It turns out there was a little fraud involved in the claim 2010 was the hottest year ever.   There's oneor two problems with the claims.  Heck, the Globe Warming conspirators are making phony predictionsabout winter forecasts and causing deaths to hide the decline now.  I was going to post a link to another article, but I found these statements to be so compelling, I'm pasting them en toto from the site:

In a policy paper entitled Surface Temperature Records: Policy-Driven Deception?, published in August 2010 by the Science & Public Policy Institute (SPPI), D'Aleo and Watts write:

Around 1990, NOAA/NCDC's GHCN dataset lost more than three-quarters of the climate measuring stations around the world. It can be shown that country by country, they lost stations with a bias towards higher-latitude, higher-altitude and rural locations, all of which had a tendency to be cooler.
The remaining climate monitoring stations were increasingly near the sea, at lower elevations, and at airports near larger cities. This data were then used to determine the global average temperature and to initialize climate models. Interestingly, the very same often colder stations that have been deleted from the world climate network were retained    for computing    the average-temperature in the base periods, further increasing the potential bias towards overstatement of the warming.

To make sure the reader did not  miss this astounding point, we reiterate and emphasize: More than 75 percent of the weather stations around the globe have been inexplicably "lost."

And it just so happens, that most of the "lost" weather stations happen to be, conveniently, ones from the colder areas — from the higher altitudes, the higher latitudes, and rural areas — providing an automatic exaggerated temperature rise that more than accounts for the reported "global warming" of recent decades.

Are there any AGW believers out there that would care to refute my cut-and-paste?  Your side has dropped actual monitoring of 75% of the weather stations, fudged the remaining data, and is claiming GW while we're up to our arses in snow in places we haven't had it in decades.  Guess we're supposed to take their findings on faith while they profit from carbon credit salesand research grantsand go laughing all the way to the bank, salving their consciences with our money.

Monster storms like this are caused by fluctuations which draw more icy weather from the north and there's more moist air in the Gulf of Mexico because of increased temperature.

  1. When I watch the weather this time of year, the usual pattern is for moisture to come in from the Pacific, over the Northwest US, then it dives into the desert southwest, then rises toward the NE.
  2. If the Gulf and the Carribean can influence weather, why not the cooler waters of La Nina in the Pacific?

It was cold during the winter (with snow) and remained cold until spring. There were blizzards in 1954 and 1967 There were certain anomalies like 1966 or was 1967 (as the middle atlantic states are prone to) when it was in the 60's on X'mas day. I am thinking the last 10-15 years was the aberration and this is more like the normal weather I remember. I know this isn't scientific. But I was stationed in Ft. Jackson SC (Columbia) in January 1970 and it snowed there and was very cold. The Potomac froze over and could be walked across in 1977 (or winter '78). In January 1977 it snowed in Brunswick Georgia while I was at FLETC.  Reagan's inauguration parade (1985?) was called off due to extreme cold. This is just normal variation of weather and not proof of nothing. Millions of years ago much of the U.S. was tropical rainforest hence coal and oil. Same for the arid middle east where most of the oil comes from. Climate changes naturally. Climate change folks always forget about the little ice age from approximately 1400's to the early 19th century and that we have been in a warming trend since then. I don't think man amounts to more than a flea on the earth's a$$.

If I say I believe in it, can I get money from the government like Mann and Hansen.

I want to follow the money like Troglodike.
