CBS Early Show Praises Teen Global Warming Activist

On Wednesday’s CBS Early Show, correspondent Daniel Sieberg reported on a young global warming activist from California: "...everyday citizens of all ages are doing their part to raise awareness of climate change....15-year-old Alec Loorz takes his message across the country, using poles to illustrate the predicted sea level rise if nothing is done to prevent global warning."

At one point, Loorz declared: "All of lower Manhattan would be underwater." That’s not the first time such a claim was made on the CBS morning news program. On November 5, 2007, Early Show co-host Harry Smith interviewed New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg about a proposal to impose a national carbon tax and declared that "Manhattan will be underwater by 2050" if global warming was left unchecked.

On Wednesday, Sieberg went on to tout Loorz’s activism: "Alec’s voice also has the support of a former vice president. At the age of just 12, he applied to be part of Al Gore’s network of official speakers. It took some persistence, but eventually, Alec was accepted....And Alec’s cool factor certainly isn’t lost on his friends and family members."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Sieberg explained: "His mission includes keeping the air cleaner by planting trees and encouraging conservation, like using energy efficient light bulbs....Ultimately, Alec says it’s a universal message that applies to everyone." The taped report ended with Loorz imploring: "Let’s work together to change the world and not just occupy it."

After the report, fill-in co-host Jeff Glor remarked: "Both inspiring and depressing to see that someone half our age has accomplished more than we have." Sieberg, sitting in studio with Glor, agreed: "Yeah, he’s way ahead of us, I think."

Here is a full transcript of the segment:

8:42AM

JEFF GLOR: As you know, Al Gore is on a mission to raise awareness about global warning. But CBS News science and technology correspondent Daniel Sieberg met a young man who has his own ‘inconvenient truth.’ Daniel, good morning.

DANIEL SIEBERG: Exactly. Good morning, Jeff. You know, while politicians debate, everyday citizens of all ages are doing their part to raise awareness of climate change and I got a chance to meet one of the most committed activists. From the west coast in Los Angeles-

ALEC LOORZ: We could be underwater right here where we are.

SIEBERG: -to the east coast in New York.

LOORZ: All of lower Manhattan would be underwater.

SIEBERG: 15-year-old Alec Loorz takes his message across the country, using poles to illustrate the predicted sea level rise if nothing is done to prevent global warning.

ALEC LOORZ: There’s a line at the top that says ‘you will be under water here.’

SIEBERG: His mission includes keeping the air cleaner by planting trees and encouraging conservation, like using energy efficient light bulbs.

LOORZ: That is a solar light.

SIEBERG: And he helps empower other kids.

LOORZ: It’s true, we are the future, but we are more than that. We’re here now and we are the present. So our voices do make a difference.

SIEBERG: But Alec’s voice also has the support of a former vice president. At the age of just 12, he applied to be part of Al Gore’s network of official speakers. It took some persistence, but eventually, Alec was accepted.

AL GORE: Alec Loorz is from your community.

LOORZ: At the first event where I met him, he actually introduced me to his crowd and talked about what I did. And that really opened up a lot of doors and it was really cool he did that.

SIEBERG: And Alec’s cool factor certainly isn’t lost on his friends and family members.

JOEY SANTIA [FRIEND]: I’m very glad that Alec is really taking the bull by the horns and is really trying to get the message out.

OLIVIA LOORZ [SISTER]: We have to take the action and not just wait for other people to fix our own problems.

SIEBERG: Ultimately, Alec says it’s a universal message that applies to everyone.

LOORZ: Let’s work together to change the world and not just occupy it.

SIEBERG: Well, Alec will continue his fight in the coming months, on both the national and international stage. He’s scheduled to speak at climate change conferences in Colorado, Copenhagen, and Qatar. He’s a busy kid.

JEFF GLOR: Both inspiring and depressing to see that someone half our age has accomplished more than we have.

SIEBERG: Yeah, he’s way ahead of us, I think.

GLOR: So he does all this stuff. How does he – does he go to school?

SIEBERG: He does, in a sense. He’s actually allowed to do this work as part of his curriculum. It’s kind of a home schooled school that he’s in on the west coast in California. So it’s kind of both at the same time. He’s getting life experience and this great education.

GLOR: Good for him. Daniel Sieberg, thank you very much.

SIEBERG: You bet.

Pathetic...

What a sad statement on the youth of our country.  Oh well, at least we still have Dr. Zachy to put everything in perspective:

Sea Levels Rise as Arctic Ice Melts

Not quite.  The Arctic is an ocean, and the ice displaces its weight in water. If the ice melts, it still displaces its weight in water.  Sea levels would not rise an inch.

allan -- as frozen

allan -- as frozen water displaces a greater volume than liquid water, shouldn't the sea level decrease if it melts?

Barack Obama voted for a single payer government bad healthcare system before he voted against it!

Actually ice displaces the same amount of liquid water, in

liquid water, as liquid water. It's lower density explains why the top 10% of an iceberg sticks out of the water. But the level of the liquid won't change whether or not the ice melts.

"Democrats; Breeding voters like farm animals since 1962"

and...

The major part of the 350 foot sea level rise since about 12,500 years ago occurred in the first couple thousand years due to all the land based glaciers melting. Now that these miles thick masses of ice are gone, the sea level rise from global warming amounts to inches, not dozens of feet.

Even the IPCC repudiated this silliness. Their published rise will be around 7 to 12 inches. In 100 years. Maybe. I think I could outwalk that sort of rise if I was living on the shore, don't you?

Cool factor!?

You gotta be kidding me. He sounds like the science nerd at school who could never get a date.

The article is fine...Alec, on the other hand, is a spoiled, stupid, attention whoring child.  Perhaps when he grows up, he'll gather enough knowledge to realize how little he knew (relative to how much he thought he knew)...not to mention some long overdue humility.  Unfortunately, CBS tends to reward self-indulged, self-important, self-promoting busybody brats instead of children with actual intelligence.

His future doesn't look too 'bright'...but neither do you.

Alec is apparently so brainwashed he'll do anything Obama tells him to do.

He'll narc on his parents.

He'll be one of the first Americops blockleiters (Nazi community organizers).

He'll help ACORN to steal the Census.

And Alec and thousands more Americops like him, will even kick down doors to seize our lawfully owned guns.

And that, my friend, is where Alec's future doesn't look too 'bright'.

And Al Gore and the rest of them won't shed a tear.

You know, there's not really a whole lot of difference between today's Stalinist liberal Democratic leadership and al-Qaeda.

Both of them talk a good game but when it's time for some real 'wet work', they send indoctrinated, expendable dolts like Alec to do it so they don't get their fingernails dirty.

Embarrassing

The corruption of the MSM is being exposed more and more. They are absolutely refusing to acknowledge up-to-date scientific research on the climate, and blindly (stupidly) plunging ahead with their insane global warming hoax. As they advocate for the Democratic position to institute cap and tax and all that, they're just embarrassing themselves. People are being threatened with losing their asses. They are looking up the facts. For cryin' out loud, can't the dreamers on the left start waking up?

Climate Change

Let me clue everyone in. The climate on earth has been changing for the last 6.5 BILLION years and it's going to keep on changing long after we are gone. Get used to it

Maybe the alarmists would prefer the weather 200 yrs ago?

You know, like it was in the 1700's where it was common for NY and Boston harbors to freeze during winter. And where the Delaware river would commonly freeze over completely all the way to well south of Philadlephia. Remember the story and painting of Washington crossing the Delaware on Christmas eve to attack the Hessians in Trenton?

The weather is in a constant state of change and to even make matters worse appears to be somewhat cyclic. It seems to corelate very well with the 11 year solar cycle - go figure.

Kristen Byrnes.   I wonder

Kristen Byrnes.   I wonder if these CBS 'journalists' know who Kristen Byrnes is?  If they are going to highlight some adolescent in science, they ought to at least feature one who has made some correct predictions.   Come to think of it, they ought to apply that same litmus test to adult scientists they report on.

What should we do?

I love these people that say "we must do something or this town or that town will be under water". What should we do? Plant more trees?

I hope this kid is getting a kickback from Al Gore or he is going to look like an idiot in the coming years.

This is why it's called "adolescere". It means "to grow"

I can tell when his voice changes, it will sound just like Al Gore's.

I'm sure if he were bebunking Global Warming, it would make the news at all.

What about this guy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeZtOGvLEyk

DoD has been confronting

DoD has been confronting global warming for over three years and issued several public domain publications on the subject. All are focused on the national security aspects of global warming that are affecting and will affect the United States.

"U. S. Army War College Guide to National Security Policy and Strategy", 2nd Edition, June, 2006, Fort Leavenworth,KS

http://www.strategic...

http://www.strategic...

"Global Climate Change National Security Implications", Fort Leavenworth, KS, May, 2008

http://www.strategicstudiesinstitute.army.mil/pubs/display.cfm?pubID=862

Of course, all publications contain facts acquired from scientific research and are applied to US national security concerns.  Therefore, you could be severely challenged to read each of the publications (they're probably about 250 pages each of very detailed studies by each military service) and find yourself not in favor of the US military and national security.

I know that the only knowledge you possess is that spoon fed to you by Rush, Sean, Mark, Hugh, Dennis, the many Michaels, Ann, Michelle, and other intellectual black holes so forming an independent opinion by reading scientific studies could be llife-threatening and you may wanna wimp out and go back to cowering until Rush, Sean, Mark, Hugh, Dennis, and others tells you what to think on their programs tomorrow.

After all, when it comes to national security, better to be patriotic and support the troops than dead from a known enemy, climate change, right?

ah yes.

so I presume you've read them all?

DoD Global Climate Change & Natl Security Policy

Yes, I've read each of them and used them extensively for research and reference purposes for my graduate school classes and papers.

SSI publishes annually a very large quantity of documents pertaining to US national security policies and all are FREE to anyone who requests them.  You paid for them and they provide you with information and insights you're not going to find anywhere else.

wjneill, Looks like you missed SOMETHING....

The views expressed in this report are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the Department of the Army, the Department of Defense, or the U.S. Government. Authors of Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) publications enjoy full academic freedom, provided they do not disclose classified information, jeopardize operations security, or misrepresent official U.S. policy.

Dream on!! Anyone can re publish algores poop...try 2009..

Just the data, not consenus poop you recycle..

Reagan VS Liberalism

So, like Sean, you've read . . .

. . . all four publications and are aware of how the writers address climate change and the implications for US national security policies and how the US military should be structured to respond to existing and developing problems?

Nice trick.  When you've read the publications, tell us about the Al Gore fingerprints you found.  Also take great care to tell us about the career paths of each of the authors and how their career paths would lead them to be influenced by Al Gore.

Do your homework and don't present yourself to be like Sean, Rush, Ann, Michelle, or the other black holes. Exploit the knowledge placed before you.  Unless it scares you.

hm

why read all the publications?

the first several you listed have nothing scientifically to do with AGW.  They are military strategy manuals.  The military must be ready for anything.  (I would wager there is even one regarding alien invasions.)

One of the items you links references the other - and though that one that has the core information it relies on George Pataki's  "Confronting Climate Change" and the findings of the IPCC (apparently unequivocal)

Incidently Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth IS in the bib notes of one of them. I also liked the ref to a bumper sticker "recently seen".  That made me giggle.

What you've done here is try to bombard us with essentially useless information.  Its a good try.  Kudos. :)

Reagan VS Liberalism

Research is not science.

Hypothesis is not drawn from research that is not scientfic. Look at the lag/lead for carbon/temp data for your research. Don't reach a hypothesis before studying the real data. If you want to be short sided, why are we having such a cool Summer this year? 4th of July beach in SC the coolest I can remember.

Hi, SkipperMLM , If it felt cold ,It's because it is cold.

I posted this almost real time data link above..

Not by fire but by Ice

Coldest July on record for the
nine-state Midwest
region, based on
preliminary data.  The average temperature for the region was 68.0
degrees, 4.7 degrees below normal. The previous record was 68.9 degrees
in 1992, according to Mike Timlin, Regional Climatologist with the NOAA
Midwestern Regional Climate Center.

It was the coldest July on record for Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa; the
second coldest on record for Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin;
the third coldest in Minnesota; and the fourth coldest on record for
Missouri. Records for the region date back 114 years.

Timlin says that more than 400
record low minimum temperatures and 1,300 record low maximum
temperatures (lowest high temperature) were set during July across the
nine-state region.

Many locations in the central
Midwest did not reach 90 degrees at all during the month. Typically, the
number of days with temperatures reaching 90 degrees or above ranges
from 10 to 15 from southern Missouri eastward through Kentucky, and
three to five in the northern third of the region.

Thanks upcountrywater

Hope I got my point across to our 62 year-old "graduate"wjneill

I am so sick of these guys referencing themselves and calling it science.

Climate has and will change and most of these "programs" are producing more polution than at present. Case and point: Cash for Clunkers. Where do they think all this Freon (glycol, lead...etc) goes when they crush these cars? Why isn't Al Gore upset about that??? Because the whole thing is politically based and bunk.

Absolute crap. There is no global warming...

...and 'climate change' is an unquantifiable and therefore invalid term.

All the smoke and mirrors in the world does not make up for the fact that the earth has been cooling since 1998.

That's why liberals now address this issue as 'climate change', a meaningless term coined especially by and for liberal con men like Al Gore, James Hansen and just about anyone in the UN who become sexually excited at the idea of ripping off US taxpayers for billions more that we already give them.

Nationalized Healthcare is a DEATH SENTENCE.

Basic questions

I know that the only knowledge you possess is that spoon fed to you by Rush, Sean, Mark, Hugh, Dennis, the many Michaels, Ann, Michelle, and other intellectual black holes so forming an independent opinion by reading scientific studies could be llife-threatening and you may wanna wimp out and go back to cowering until Rush, Sean, Mark, Hugh, Dennis, and others tells you what to think on their programs tomorrow.  Considering you are a programmed Socialist drone, taking marching orders from Al Gore, His Majesty The Shahinshah, various Leftist and Socialist websites, and vomiting your Leftist orthodoxy here in a tone of sneering condescension, I find this laughable.

Unfortunately, my little Leftist drone, the only reason those people upon whom you pour scorn upon for the crime of daring to have an opinion not allowed by your Leftist orthodoxy even have jobs is quite simple: they reflect what Rightists think.  Indeed, they demonstrate what a diverse area of thought can be found on the Right.  You may want to look at it sometime.

And it is nice to see this is the only time you will say anything in support of the military, an institution that only fills you with embarrassment, shame, and disgust, no doubt.  Permit me to enlighten you.  The military must be prepared for as many contingencies as possible.  Unlike you, the military cannot afford to turn science into dogma.  So it must plan for possibilities.  Further, as pointed out by other posters, just because these documents you quoted (after which you boiled your hands for two hours I am sure) come from various military sources does not mean total acceptance by the DoD as policy.

Since you are apparently so much smarter than the rest of us on NB, perhaps you can enlighten me:

1) If global warming - oh, I mean, "climate change" (which is a term you use to blame and badmouth the United States and capitalism no matter what happens to the climate because you and I both know the chances of you being dead wrong are extremely high and you need something to CYA) is REALLY HAPPENING and can ONLY BE CAUSED BY MAN, why is it that China, Mexico, and India are among other countries exempt from the Kyoto Protocol?

2) Twenty years ago I kept hearing that we had twenty years to "do something about global warming".  Well, by my watch, 20 years is up and I don't notice anything out of the ordinary. Why?

3) Exit Glacier has been melting since 1780. What has been causing that melting to happen all that time?

4) Explain why points south and east of a coty that rarely sees snow, San Antonio, saw snow for Christmas 2004.

5) This decade alone: Johannesburg, Baghdad and Buenos Aires have seen snow.  These are cities that rarely if ever see snow.  Why is this?

6) Why was the world's record highest temperature set in 1922?

7) Why do religionists such as yourself recoil at the idea that the United States convert to nuclear power?  Hey, it works for France, which gets 78.5% of their electricity from nukes.  But oh no, we can NEVER bring up nukes.  Why is that.

8) Explain the ice storms that have hit San Antonio and south TX over the past 10 years.

9) I keep hearing all the Arctic Ocean's ice is melting, yet when I stood at the shore of the Arctic in July 2004, I watched the ice come ashore to herald the start of winter.  Why is this?

Critical thinkers like to ask questions and seek out answers, not vomit orthodoxy all day long.  Try it sometime.

Ah...the indoctrination continues...

I was (painfully) watching BBC last month in Frankfort, and saw where they claim the Greenland glaciers are moving at twice the speed they normally do - due to global warming.  Funny, I thought glacier movement was controlled by snow pack rate; like squeezing a tube of toothpaste.  This would tell me the glaciers are moving faster due to more snow, not global warming.

Can we please talk about my local warming problem now.

  Forget global, what about local?

Last night at 3:00 am, it was 65 degrees.

Today at 3:00 pm, it was 85 degrees.

That is 20 degrees of warming in 12 hours people!

That is ultra scary oh dear sweet mana in heaven somebody stop the madness I am scared! At this rate, we will all be dead in 4 days.

Don't tell me a front came through because none did.

First explain it. Then stop it. Now. Wait, I... Oh I am verklempt again.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Update!

It is 12:26 am now. The temperature has come down to 72 degrees. I think the danger has passed this time.

It is like there is some weird cycle or something. Maybe Hollywood could find out what is the cause and make a movie or sumtin.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

I am worried again.

It got down to 63 at 3:00 am today. Where did those 2 extra degrees go?

Also, this is not the first time I have noticed these temperature changes. It happens quite frequently, and it is usually the same. Cooler at night. Warmer in the day.

Can we please get someone in Hollywood to make a movie and solve this intractable riddle.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Should I move? Is this area of America haunted?

Last week, I walked outside and it was as though the skin on my arms and face were cooking. Not fast frying cooking but a real slow heating. Like a ghost was blowing heat on my face.

There is a safe area in my yard where I can escape this inexplicable phenomenon. Under an apple tree 50 feet from my house. I think the apples scare away the ghosts.

Is there some area of the country that is safe from this weird local warming  predicament?

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.
