On Thursday, MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer reported on Meghan McCain calling Joe the Plumber a "dumb ass" for his views on homosexuality and remarked: "Is that name calling? Or, you know, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck and looks like a duck. Just asking, folks. I'm just asking." [audio available here]
In the brief report, during the 2:00PM ET hour, Brewer explained:
Let's go to the war of words between Meghan McCain and the man known as Joe the Plumber. In a recent interview, the daughter of the former GOP presidential contender railed against her dad's big supporter here. And she was talking about her support for gay marriage, she criticized Samuel Wurzelbacher, that’s his real name, his comments about homosexuals. How about the fact that virtually every parent wants to have biological grandchildren. In most cases a homosexual lifestyle precludes that possibility. It is inevitable that parents most parents are disappointed when they find out that their child is practicing homosexual behavior because they are not likely to have grandchildren. Although most parents continue to love their children unconditionally, This disappointment is an understandable and normal feeling for parents of homosexuals.

I always looked at him as a politician who deliberately calculated that the best way to get the most attention was to be the "fly in the ointment" in his own party - especially after George W Bush won the nomination in 2000 - a nomination that he thought was due him. So, he took positions on certain issues that were at odds with the prevailing conservative thought. I don't think he is so much a liberal as a contrarian. That's why his positions have been so scatter shot - not predictable - or principled. I'm not defending him - I think he's done a lot of damage to the party over the years - but I don't think he would have been all that liberal - once he got what he wanted and expected - the presidency.
