At the top of Friday’s CBS Early Show co-host Julie Chen declared: "New details about that foiled terrorist plot in New York. Are American jails becoming breeding grounds for home-grown terrorists?" In the report that followed, correspondent Kelly Wallace explained: "Three of the suspects are U.S. citizens, all are Muslim. Three of the four are said to be jailhouse converts...One study estimates that as many as 175,000 inmates of American prisons converted to Islam since September 11th."
Despite such a shocking statistic, from a 2007 Indiana State University study, Wallace made no mention of President Obama’s plan to release Islamic fundamentalists from Guantanamo into American prisons. Wallace did feature terrorism expert and former Bush aide Juan Zarate, who observed: "I think what you have here is a volatile admixture of radical religious thought, combined with violent extremism. And within the prison walls it becomes a really dangerous mix." A "mix" that would be made even more dangerous if Guantanamo terrorist suspects were added.
Immediately following Wallace’s report, co-host Harry Smith and Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer discussed the dueling national security speeches by President Obama and former Vice President Dick Cheney, including the topic of closing Guantanamo. However, neither Smith nor Schieffer referenced the startling report that had just preceded them.

When I saw news coverage of
May 22, 2009 - 14:15 ET by BKeyserWhen I saw news coverage of the arrest yesterday, and subsquently learned of the prison aspect of the story, that is the very forst thought that entered my feeble little mind: So we're considering moving hell-bent jihadists into the prison sytem ripe with new recruits who may, in fact, be released? Do these people not watch NatGeo and the History Channel? There are episodes all the time about the infrastructure within prisons and the ability to orchestrate illegal actions outside the prison walls, from within.
But golly gee gosh, the world will be a much happier place if we just close Gitmo and pretend not to be mad at anyone. I think my kindergarten teacher is writing our foreign policy and national security protocol.
Recruiting Tools
May 22, 2009 - 14:32 ET by Pilgrim1949The gang of "tools" (and not the sharpest in the shed, either!) currently running (or feebly attempting to do so) our country are the best recruitment tools there for enlisting more jihadi explosive delivery personnel.
One look at PresBo and his minions and the most fervent jihadi can barely assemble a proper suicide belt for fear that his uncontrollable laughing fits might trigger a Jeff-Dunham-Achmed-the-dead-terrorist-like "premature detonation."
Yup, let's take a seriously deadly virus and put in into a petri dish full of a viral-friendly growth medium and see what happens.
There used to be a 1960's era song about the John Birch Society that included the phrase, "come and join our ranks, to get this movement started we need lots of tools and cranks."
I think we know where to find a whole other hardware store of useless, dull tools, strutting and bragging about how sharp they are. Old folk saying: It's a hollow barrel that makes the most noise.

Please don't anyone tell President Obama this. He will make a speech about how our putting people in prison causes them to become Islamist extremists, and call for the closing of prisons.
Michelle Malkin also covers this in her weekly column
and has even more examples.

One thing they left out of
May 22, 2009 - 16:25 ET by ThisnThatOne thing they left out of the report is the racial makeup of these 175,000 converts. How do you target a solution without knowing who the players really are?
And what about Rev Wright's God Damn America approach to religion? How many people did that bastard convert to America-haters -- and what was the racial makeup of those individuals, also?
Instead, the left wants to focus on people like McVey -- white, ex-military, insuating that all home-grown radicals fit that profile, instead. Wrong.

Get religion out!
May 22, 2009 - 15:46 ET by slickwillie2001We need to get islam out of American prisons period. No worship, no islamic preachers, no prayer rooms, no korans, nothing. Until we accept that islam is a key part of the problem we face, we will not make any progress in these wars.

May 22, 2009 - 16:28 ET by ThisnThatAccording to the left, only Christianity is evil. When has the left said anything critical of Islam? Are there a lot of ABC, NBC, NYTimes, WAPO reports and studies on this? Nope. But Christianity -- now that's a different story altogether, isn't it -- according to the left. Of course, they don't let facts get in the way of a good, underserved bashing of their make-believe enemy.

When Harry met Bob
May 22, 2009 - 16:00 ET by acumenHowever, neither Smith nor Schieffer referenced the startling report that had just preceded them.
Bob and Harry must have been totally discombobulated by the report. The demedia is so consumed with the naive Obama position of engaging in dialogue with those holding opposing views in some utopian attempt to find common ground, the idea of preventing America's enemies from engaging in dialogue with each other to prevent the evolution of cataclysmic actions has probably never occured to them.
→ 230 detainees
May 22, 2009 - 19:35 ET by Cool ArrowMove them to the US, and what cannot be ignored is that all these detainees will not forever be imprisoned. And not all of them will be forever incarcerated in solitary confinement.
Those released into general population will find enough fertile minds to proselytize. It worked on those Muslims in New York who decided to kill some Jews.

This is a stupid and biased
May 22, 2009 - 22:07 ET by CamelopardalisThis is a stupid and biased post. Just because 175,000 inmates have converted to Islam since 9/11, doesn't mean that they have become extremists or that they converted because of 9/11. These inmates may or may not embrace the ideals of the Islamic extremists housed in GitMo. You are the one showing bias here, Kyle, not CBS.

May 23, 2009 - 01:46 ET by snaggletoothieCamelp,I spent years in contact with street people and drug addicts and I learned that my safety was increased if I never turned my back on a guy who had spent much time in jail. You might think of that as biased but I made it home safe when others did not. You can bow toward Mecca and sing Kumbaya. But I'll stick to safety measures that have proven effective.
