On Monday’s CBS Early Show White House correspondent Chip Reid reported on President Obama’s controversial commencement address at Notre Dame University over the weekend, but dismissed pro-life protesters as interlopers from outside groups: "The President did come under fire, but mostly from university outsiders, anti-abortion activists. But inside that graduation ceremony, his reception was much warmer than some had expected...But the vast majority here welcomed the President with open arms."
Reid briefly described some of the protest efforts: "There were hundreds of protesters waiting for the President when he arrived at Notre Dame. Hecklers who interrupted his commencement speech several times." Reid then declared: "And some who saw an opportunity to re-ignite the national debate on abortion." A clip was then played of Obama’s former Senate race opponent, Republican Alan Keyes: "Barack Obama's deeply committed to what [Pope] John Paul [II] called the culture of death and the murder of innocent children."
Reid’s report did not feature any members of the Notre Dame faculty or student body opposed to Obama speaking or mention a separate commencement ceremony that several pro-life students attended on campus. In addition, Reid failed to acknowledge a recent Gallup poll that showed a majority of Americans consider themselves pro-life.
Instead, Reid focused on portraying Obama as the great moderator between the two sides: "It's time, he said, for both sides to step back from self-righteousness...Time for opposing camps to seek common ground." A clip of Obama’s commencement address that received loud applause was played: "Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words...Let us work to the to reduce the number of women seeking abortions. Let's reduce unintended pregnancies." Reid did not describe Obama’s extremely pro-abortion voting record, nor the current speculation that the President may nominate someone from the hard left to the Supreme Court following Justice David Souter’s retirement.
Update:
Later in the show, co-host Maggie Rodriguez gave a glowing review of Obama's Notre Dame speech: "Okay I want to talk about commencement speeches this weekend. Most famously, everybody saw yesterday President Obama give the speech at Notre Dame. He did a great job. He didn't shy away from the controversy. You know, his position on stem cell research and abortion, even when he was heckled. He said 'we can't shy away from things that make us uncomfortable.' And when the president of the university introduced him, he said the reason that they're having him speak, despite their differences, is because it's a message of inclusiveness and welcoming people who are different."
Here is the full transcript of the segment:
7:00AM TEASE:
MAGGIE RODRIGUEZ: As hundreds protest his stand on abortion, President Obama speaks at Notre Dame.
BARACK OBAMA: Let's reduce unintended pregnancies.
[APPLAUSE]
RODRIGUEZ: We'll hear how he confronted the renewed uproar.
7:08AM SEGMENT:
RUSS MITCHELL: The debate goes on at the University of Notre Dame, where President Obama delivered the commencement address yesterday. The President's stance on abortion rights ignited the controversy at the Catholic institution. CBS News chief White House correspondent Chip Reid was there and joins us this morning with the latest. Chip, good morning.
CHIP REID: Well, good morning, Russ. The President did come under fire, but mostly from university outsiders, anti-abortion activists. But inside that graduation ceremony, his reception was much warmer than some had expected. There were hundreds of protesters waiting for the President when he arrived at Notre Dame. Hecklers who interrupted his commencement speech several times.
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: I'm right here. American!
REID: And some who saw an opportunity to re-ignite the national debate on abortion.
ALAN KEYES: Barack Obama's deeply committed to what John Paul called the culture of death and the murder of innocent children.
REID: But the vast majority here welcomed the President with open arms. It's time, he said, for both sides to step back from self-righteousness.
BARACK OBAMA: Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words.
REID: Time for opposing camps to seek common ground.
OBAMA: Let us work to the to reduce the number of women seeking abortions. Let's reduce unintended pregnancies.
[APPLAUSE]
REID: Later today the President turns his attention to another polarizing issue, Middle East peace. He'll be meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Russ.
MITCHELL: Chip Reid at the White House. Thank you very much.

Mon, 05/18/2009 - 10:12 ET by rwesleyOnce again, this was not a "commencement address". This was Obama seizing a captive audience and PR opportunity to soften the harsh realities of abortion. This topic is not something that belongs in the arena of graduation ceremonies. The media just bends over and glorifies this man in any way they can. Had any former Republican President spoken to graduates about religion or conservative principles, the media would have excoriated them for "pushing their views" on the innocent minds of graduates.
What national debate?
Mon, 05/18/2009 - 10:32 ET by StarAZPeople think what they think about abortion--are we supposed to be trotting this out and arguing? Coming from AZ, I was also amused by his predictable swipe at ASU--we said no honorary degrees for politicians. Get it? How about saying, "When you enter the work place, you need to remember ASU and how those administrators stuck by principle. Unless we all do that, this country is lost." That would be instead of the implied: "If you won't bend the rules for meeee, the first black president, then what is wrong with you?" This president is very snide--we see it time and time again.
Re honorary degrees
Mon, 05/18/2009 - 10:49 ET by slickwillie2001Maybe he really wants those honorary degrees; are they more meaningful than his affirmative action degrees? Which is better?

"Outsiders?"
Mon, 05/18/2009 - 10:56 ET by MAS1916The Presidential political team positions all who disagree with His policies as 'outsiders.' The media seems happy to help.
The President seemed to welcome the change of subject though. By extending the recession, Obama has made the economy much worse and the political team is getting tired of having to defend His policies. Accordingly, Obama will try another change of subject this week by focusing on the Middle-East. Scheduling his Cairo Apology speech around the anniversary of the 1967 Six Day War, Obama will (as usual) have plenty to talk about.

CBS finally gets one right.
Mon, 05/18/2009 - 11:48 ET by pbthinkerA stopped clock is right twice a day so, from my observation, CBS got this one correct. I watched it all yesterday and it was definitely a love fest. I'm amazed that a catholic institution of higher learning can so easily sacrifice the principles of the church so easily. The fact is that they did just that and willingly. Let's face it liberals and democrats are that first, it's not until lower down the chain they realize they have other principles to think about.
I saw few people yesterday who were not standing and applauding as much as they could. If I were donating to Notre Dame I would pull my money out of there quickly but, alas, they must not be worried about that.

NOT!

Mon, 05/18/2009 - 12:00 ET by SentryDanAnd you would expect something less from the Obama propaganda machine? These people just don't want anyone to believe the truth so they keep feeding us lies. The liberals just can't understand that there are those of us, "We the People", who are able to think and make up our own minds about what is true and what is not.
I've been out in the real world too long to have some snot-nosed kid who hasn't had my life experiences tell me that I don't know anything, that I have to be spoon fed "the one's" propaganda and that "the one's" propaganda is the truth. My answer to these liberal fools is to stick their propaganda where the sun don't shine. Oh and BTW, I count "the one, "the messiah", "the savior", Obama among those liberal fools. Obama hasn't got it and never will.

For those who fought for it, Freedom has a flavor that the protected will never know.

Campaign mode.
Mon, 05/18/2009 - 12:36 ET by anneftxanneftx I'm frankly disappointed that O can't seem to get out of campaign mode. He seems like a bright young man, but he's wasting his political capital on minor topics. OTOH, re Gitmo, he seems to be able to learn on the job.
In terms of his general speeches he is an America basher. His Notre Dame speech was jejuene in the extreme. Lots of platitudes and no substance. I feel that this is dangerous. He's a bit of a Jello guy -- wrigling in the wind of public opinion.
I do so very much wish that Obamamania would subside in MSM. I simply don't comprehend the adoration of someone who doesn't appear to be terribly intelligent. This surprises me.
Oh well, I guess its silly to be surprised by reportage. News folx seem to be utterly ignorant of history of forms of government.
One can only hope that he will stop invading our homes, businesses and bedrooms.

Mon, 05/18/2009 - 12:51 ET by Ole_SargeI'm in Maryland, but several people I know that had a child graduate from the University of Notre Dame du Lac, well they were at the protests - saying the Rosary, and one of the kids was photographed in cap and gown OUTSIDE protesting. There were many alumni and alumnae OUTSIDE the event, and thousands at Masses and Prayer vigils "protesting" the abuse of the day.
Chip Reid is blinded by evil that he can not see the truth.

Mon, 05/18/2009 - 13:29 ET by SentryDanGary, a new era has arrived and with it "the one", "the messiah", "the savior", "his royal majesty", king Obama. When "the king" speaks, he always speaks the truth as he knows it. And the msm is always there to push his propaganda, with no facts to back up what they claim to be fact. Sickening isn't it?

A cooperative attempt to reverse the "enemy camp" mentality
Mon, 05/18/2009 - 16:03 ET by wotsiznamewotsizname Being a 1950 graduate of one of Notre Dame's sister universities, the University of Portland, and having been also taught by the Congregation Of Holy Cross, I can understand the University's Christlike attempt to love and seek community with those who disagree, or, if you must, to "Love your enemies," in the hope, with spiritual assistance, to bring others to a positive agreement. It is not in the Holy Cross Fathers kit to promote hatred or division. From them I learned, "The object of the intellect is truth, the object of the emotions is beauty, the object of the will is good." A true missionary spirit simply offers this and believes that love, our one magic power, will ultimately prevail. This is my faith. I don't wish to argue, you can have yours.

Last Time I Checked...
Mon, 05/18/2009 - 23:39 ET by The7SticksLast time I checked, neither Alan Keyes nor Randall Terry attended Notre Dame U. Keyes attended Cornell University (I wonder if he ever met Cornell West?) While Terry's education wasn't specified (okay, I checked Wikipedia, so sue me.)
I heard Keyes was arrested, but I don't know if Randall Terry got busted either. It would have been funny to make the joke that if both of them were in jail, they'd have to be careful not to drop the soap in the shower or they might just get a date with the Health Inspector, if you get my drift. By the way, I'm not implying it's a rascist joke because Terry is white, and I would prefer him to have a date with the health inspector more so than Keyes because, well, he's your own... personal... Bill Ayres...somebody to hear your prayers, someone who cares...
Sorry, couldn't resist the Depeche Mode reference.
