CBS’s Schieffer: Bush Like ‘Queen of Hearts From Alice In Wonderland’

Bob Schieffer, CBS In a bizarre rant against President Bush at the end of Sunday’s "Face the Nation," CBS host Bob Schieffer made an odd analogy between the president and the fairy tale villain in reaction to the Bush Administration’s opposition to providing the Food and Drug Administration with more regulatory power over the tobacco industry: "The administration, incredibly, in my opinion, opposes it for a reason that would make the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland proud."

Schieffer began his commentary by declaring: "I'm delighted the House will vote this week on legislation that for the first time will give the Food and Drug Administration real power to regulate tobacco products. I hope it passes." He then decried the Bush Administration’s reason for opposing the measure:

Their reason: That the FDA already has such a huge job monitoring food safety, that it just doesn't have the resources to take on the additional job of regulating tobacco. If it did, the administration argues, regulating food and drugs might suffer. I couldn't be more serious. That really is their main reason. By that logic, we shouldn't have asked the military or our intelligence agencies to get involved in fighting terrorism after 9/11. For sure, they already had plenty to do before Osama Bin Laden came along.

Considering how long it has taken for the FDA to find the source of a recent nationwide salmonella outbreak, it seems the administration’s concerns are well-grounded.

Schieffer concluded his rant by again referencing the Alice in Wonderland character:

After the Queen of Hearts issued her weird orders her husband the King had a way of undoing them when she wasn't looking. Well, maybe Congress can do the same and pass this by veto-proof margins because every day 1,000 children in America are learning to smoke and for 20 years now, 400,000 Americans have died each year from tobacco-related diseases. That's no fairy tale. Those are just the facts.

10:30AM TEASER:

BOB SCHIEFFER: Then I'll have a final word on that other war on cancer. Are we serious about it, or are we looking for a political settlement there, too?

10:54AM SEGMENT:

BOB SCHIEFFER: Today's final thought, and I begin with a disclosure. I am a cancer survivor and I've lived for a long time with another disease called ulcerative colitis, both of which I probably got because of a long ago heavy addiction to nicotine. So I'm delighted the House will vote this week on legislation that for the first time will give the Food and Drug Administration real power to regulate tobacco products. I hope it passes. For the record, John McCain and Barack Obama, who don't agree on much, agree this needs to be done. So does the American Cancer Society, as well as the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association and on and on. The administration, incredibly, in my opinion, opposes it for a reason that would make the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland proud. Their reason: That the FDA already has such a huge job monitoring food safety, that it just doesn't have the resources to take on the additional job of regulating tobacco. If it did, the administration argues, regulating food and drugs might suffer. I couldn't be more serious. That really is their main reason. Batman

In the new Batman film there is a reference to the fact that Gotham City needs a villain, even though the "villain" is the one who is protecting the people. In other words, the "villain" is the true "hero". Among other reasons, he's a hero because he is so vilified, so degraded, yet contiues to fight and protect and do what is right. This is President Bush. Let the idiots wail on, he's been a wonderful president. God bless him.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

I can hardly watch him

I can hardly watch him anymore...I wished he would just retire...quietly at that...unlike Rather....

Unfortunately another bimbo leftist will replace him, male or female.

FOOD and DRUG

FOOD and DRUG ADMINISTRATION.  Tobacco isn't really EITHER a food or a drug so what does the FDA have to do with it?  People are always going to smoke or chew tobacco.  Stop trying to make the government BIGGER and stop trying to regulate our lives!

   Well if the Mad Hatter

Well if the Mad Hatter says it's true then it must be true.

You beat me to it

You beat me to it MidAmerica..

  Sorry about that.  :

  Sorry about that.  : )

Actually I've never read Alice in Wonderland.  About all I know about it I learned here.  Back when me and my 'ol lady hitched around the country we grooved on the vibes of all the tunes.  Friends we were with tell me I had a good time.  I don't really remember...

Comparison.

"The administration, incredibly, in my opinion, opposes it for
a reason that would make the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland
proud."

This is the kind of comparison that liberals want independent voters to think is true, when it is not. They want you to think it is OK to accept this comparison without investigating it yourself. And that's been the main train of thought with the American public over the last 7 years.

"It could be the answer to our age-old, philosophical question, 'Why are we here?' PLASTIC!"

I agree with Bush

What about the BATF. I could have sworn the T in there stood for Tobacco. The FDA is doing such a swell job of monitoring all the perscription drugs in our country. There are only about two new drugs a week they are finding out the kill people or screws them up, and some drugs that really work that don't kill people are banned because they are not made here in the US.

Go Ask Alice.......

Wasn't Bob Schieffer a Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz?

I don't care what you say,

I don't care what you say, if you critisize George Bush, you are saying something useful and constructive. What alludes me is how you can avoid critiszing this dangerous clown who currently sits in the white house.

completely

BDS is absolutely at a fever pitch.

The question is becoming, what CAN'T they blame Bush for at this point?  Gov. Gregoire:

"IF the economy in washington becomes better you can thank me, if it becomes worse you can blame Bush."

(paraphrase)

What I laugh about every day though, is that Bush has been the most liberal conservative in power since the early 20th century.  He's passed more ridiculous government increases (and not just militarily) than even CLINTON could manage!

Why do they hate him then?

Because neo-cons abandoned the cause.  Neo-cons are former liberals who left when morality left the party back in the late 60's.  How else can you explain it?  Look at Bush's social, and domestic policies.

1) Amnesty for illegals.  How many conservatives agree with that?

2) Larger national school programs (no child left behind, which has increased public school funding)

3) Mortgage bailouts and other such give me goodies.

just to name a FEW of the policies that liberals love... yet bring this up to one and watch their brains implode.

more proof

The recent Jalapeno debacle is more proof that we need to only trade with countries that respect the same health and safety regulations that we do.  As if the tainted pet food from China last year didn't make that point, now we are getting food from Mexico that is making people sick..

What will it take to effectively make the point that we can't trade with countries that don't value human and pet life as much as we do?

too damn bad he isn't

I love to see heads roll for the despicable and sometimes traitorous things that have been done in the last 8 years.

My perfect week would be seeing most of the NYT's editorial staff's heads on pikes in front of the building.
