CBS's Greenfield: Obama 'Legitimate Heir' to Kennedy Legacy

On Monday’s CBS "Early Show" Senior Political Correspondent and former Robert Kennedy speech writer, Jeff Greenfield, discussed Obama gaining the endorsement of Patrick, Caroline, and Ted Kennedy: "It is, Harry, a family affair, and it is loaded with political significance and more than a little irony. At its center, one of the most significant legacies in American politics."

Greenfield went on to gush over the Kennedy legacy and how Obama is now its "legitimate heir":

They are iconic images. The youngest elected president ever, whose violent death made him a permanent symbol of youth and energy. And so when another young man sought the presidency 32 years after John Kennedy, the Clinton campaign showcased this image of a teenage Bill Clinton shaking hands with JFK. During his presidency, the images of the Clintons sailing off Cape Cod with the Kennedys burnished that connection. But now as Senator Hillary Clinton seeks the White House, key members of the Kennedy family have designated her principal opponent as their legitimate heir.

Greenfield concluded the segment by suggesting that the Kennedy endorsement could somehow reverse Hillary Clinton’s "huge lead" in the Massachusetts primary on Super Tuesday:

...this Kennedy endorsement may have a practical impact. It means that with John Kerry, both Massachusetts Senators have backed Obama, as has the state's governor, Deval Patrick. That's a Super Tuesday state, Harry, with 121 delegates, where Senator Clinton has a big lead in the polls right now.

Here is the full transcript of the segment:

7:00AM TEASER:

HARRY SMITH: Backlash against Clinton. That's Bill, as South Carolina says no to Hillary, and Caroline Kennedy and her uncle Ted endorse Barack Obama.

7:02AM SEGMENT:

JULIE CHEN: And later this morning, Senator Ted Kennedy, despite Bill Clinton's pleas, is expected to endorse Barack Obama. Joining Caroline Kennedy, who wrote in The New York Times that she believes Obama inspires voters the way people say her father inspired them.

HARRY SMITH: That, a big blow to the Clinton campaign. And of course, criticism of the former president hitting a fever pitch right now. The question, does Bill Clinton help or hurt his wife was answered loud and clear by South Carolina voters this weekend. Barack had a 55% of the vote. Hillary, 27%. It was left to Bill Clinton to give a concession speech.

BILL CLINTON: We congratulate him. Now we go to February 5th when millions of Americans finally get in the act.

SMITH: We're going to talk about Super Tuesday, but right now we want to talk about this big endorsement over the weekend, Caroline Kennedy endorsing Barack Obama in The New York Times.

JEFF GREENFIELD: And a much bigger one to come today, as you heard. It is, Harry, a family affair, and it is loaded with political significance and more than a little irony. At its center, one of the most significant legacies in American politics.

JOHN KENNEDY: Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.

GREENFIELD: They are iconic images. In Sunday's New York Times, Caroline Kennedy, President Kennedy's surviving child , endorsed Obama, saying quote, I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them. But for the first time I believe I have found the man who could be that president. Not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans. And yesterday CBS News learned that Senator Edward Kennedy, the clan's surviving brother, along with his son, Patrick, will endorse Barack Obama today. That news came just a day after Obama swamped Hillary Clinton in the South Carolina primary, amid signs that some Democrats were put off by Bill Clinton's efforts on his wife's behalf, including what sounded like an attempt to dismiss Obama's South Carolina showing in racial terms.

BILL CLINTON: Jesse Jackson won South Carolina twice in '84 and '88.

GREENFIELD: Now, we should note that three of Robert Kennedy's children, Kerry, Kathleen, Robert Jr., are backing Senator Clinton, and this Kennedy endorsement may have a practical impact. It means that with John Kerry, both Massachusetts Senators have backed Obama, as has the state's governor, Deval Patrick. That's a Super Tuesday state, Harry, with 121 delegates, where Senator Clinton has a big lead in the polls right now.

SMITH: Really interesting stuff. If you're Hillary Clinton, do you wish Super Tuesday was today?

GREENFIELD: Absolutely. She has big leads in almost all of those delegate-rich states. But as we have seen, polls taken eight or nine days out can change much to our surprise.

SMITH: Yeah, we're going to have a lot more on this as the morning goes on. Jeff Greenfield, thanks. More on Caroline Kennedy's influential endorsement in our next half hour as well.

I suspect they have a lot of

I suspect they have a lot of "illegitimacy" in that family.  It's about time they got some "legitimacy".

Cute little leftist

Cute little leftist lovefest here...

Of course Billary wishes Super Tuesday was tomorrow...but it ain't.

Big trouble for her... I think in the states she was counting on with her so-called delegates now that the Kennedy Clan is involved, they and others who feel it is safe now to give their support elsewhere are going to be spreading out far and wide...and fast to help Obama...not just with the black vote in the dem party but now the hispanic vote too with the likes of Kennedy/McCain amnesty bill to use....and of course she voted for the war while he didn't...also the Unions too...

Don't forget the super delegates either...wonder how many may change their minds...

Going to be interesting.

Democrats

I have been predicting the split in the Democratic Party via comments on this and other weblogs for several weeks now and it hasn't elicited a condescending sneer or an attaboy from anyone. I don't know if the blogosphere realizes what is going on before its very eyes. The division within liberal ranks is huge and permanent and I think ultimately the organism will seperate into two entities. The extreme George Soros funded daily Kos left which will identify itself as the American Liberal Party and the union , black, moderate base which will remain as the Democratic Party.

If this becomes reality, the reverberation will be felt by the leftist main stream media which will be forced to choose a side. The pundits and prognisticators dismiss this notion as nonsense because they are deeply fearful of the consequences if this happens. Sorta like whistlin past the graveyard.

With all the talk of heirs...

With all this talk of heirs, legitimate or otherwise, I get the distinct impression that the MSM and most liberals pine for a monarchy.

In fact with all the talk about what the next president is going to "do" on both the GOP and Dem sides, it sounds like we are electing a monarch or a dictator.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

EXACTLY WHAT IS THE JFK "LEGACY"? (2 me)

EXACTLY IS THE JFK “LEGACY”? (2 me)

…..On
Monday’s CBS “Early Show” Senior Political Correspondent and former
Robert Kennedy speech writer, Jeff Greenfield, discussed Obama gaining
the endorsement of Patrick, Caroline, and Ted Kennedy: “It is, Harry, a
family affair, and it is loaded with political significance and more
than a little irony. At its center, one of the most significant
legacies in American politics.”
Greenfield went on to gush over the Kennedy legacy and how Obama is now its “legitimate heir”:
They are iconic images. The youngest elected president ever, whose
violent death made him a permanent symbol of youth and energy….

NOTE: I was in 8th grade in 1960 so I lived thru the “scam-a-lot” years.

1st, JFK was not a moral person, he was a known serial adulterer in and out of the White House… he was the original HornDog1.
I know, morals don’t matter… they do to me. They tell me you are a
sneak with an ego problem who shames his wife and kids. One of the big
signs of cultural decay is the shoulder shrugs at serial adultery.
2nd, JFK gave Cuba to Castro… he promised air support
against the young thug communist but never kept his word (there is that
serial adulterer approach to values again)… so those fighting godless
communism looked to the sky for our planes that never came. Need we
discuss the result of that letdown?
3rd, JFK opened to nepotism door by making his brother
AG… remember under JFK and LBJ some the Justice Dept still abused the
rights of MLK.
4th, JFK was way too social with mob-connected people
and got involved with some associated women (there is that serial
adulterer approach to values again)… heck, its still a common theory
his bedding of mob-ettes cost him his life.
5th, JFK used his smile, wit and family to obscure an
administration with a short list of achievements and lots of hot air.
Many have opined his full 4 year term would have been as lean as his
shorter time.
6th, JFK cut taxes (which democrats are not allowed to
do anymore so they won’t be copying that solid achievement). A rose for
JFK at last.
7th, JFK set a national space goal that we met. A rose for JFK only because others kept the ball in play.
8th, JFK had a spine when the Russians wanted missles
in Cuba BUT since he gave communists Cuba till this day, no rose… you
caused it all.
(Did I mention the Kennedy fortune was due to running contraband during WW2 by their Daddy? Check on that. I always heard it.)

So Obama is an heir to all “this” wonder?
A man who detests tax relief, thinks the US is the blameboy and foreign
thugs are trustworthy, won’t make us energy independent, will nominate
nutty judges for life to go with the hundreds HornDog2 gave us, will
hammer businesses with taxes and has the most secular socialist voting
record in congress will be the perfect HornDog1 heir to some mythical
scam-a-lot? I am not impressed, I am scared.
Hey, Barack, no can be… gotta be a serial adulterer first… its the
democrat “foundation for greatness” trait… but the smiling empty suit
flaunting family guy over principles that actually work, its solid,
don’t ever change.
Its how we can all be sure you are a democrat. That and the fact your butt is covered with media kisses.

All the issues you list are valid. For some reason , number two still eats at me to this day. A group of patriotic Cubans went ashore to unseat Castro's government. Their numbers were far too small to win on their own. With the promise of US airpower behind them, they landed at the Bay of Pigs. America's finest were told to stand down by that weasel Kennedy. It was not one of America's finest hours.

Number 3 was no surprise. It is part of the Democratic Spoils Sytem. <Sarcasm on> Robert's extensive experience in the practice of law made him the most qualified individual in the USA for the job. <Sarcasm off>

I was 10 years old watching those Cubans come back legless and on stretchers.  It was some years later that I realized these casualties were due to one of the most cowardly acts by a President in history.

Oh joy to the world, 19 more atomic power plants!

The "Kennedy Legacy" is crock.

The Kennedy Legacy is nothing more than an illusion on the part of the left in this country.

This family owes its fortune to what was essentially bootlegging. Yes, perhaps a little more sophisticated, higher class of bootlegging, but bootlegging it was.

The Kennedy's were, and are, so dysfunctional a family that they make the Simpsons and Bundy's appear normal in comparrison.

The entire Kennedy Family mystique is nothing less than a total farce.

I wish they, along with the Clintons, would just go away.

Not too far

I hope for Obama's sake, someone doesn't take this Kennedy thing too seriously.  The last version of Camelot ended with a bang.  (several bangs, actually)

"Kennedy Legacy"

That is a joke right?

John Kennedy started and inspired the Vietnam war.  Millions died.

John Kennedy abandoned Cuban freedom fighters, thousands died and millions live to this day in fear and persecution.

Ted Kennedy got away with murder.  He was and is a walking talking example of John Edwards' two americas.  One for the rich who live off their father's fortune tax free and are above the law.  The other america is one that is subject to taxes, the law and the ups and downs of the economy.

Ted Kennedy drove his first wife to alcohol abuse and the need for mental treatment.  She is one of many that he abused and that the Kennedy's abused.

Camelot?  It is more like a Searchlight Nevada whorehouse.  Does Obama really want to be part of that pack of scum.

Legacy?

The Kennedy Camelot is a myth and fairy tale of epic proportions. Legacy of what?  1960 Illinois election fraud?  Judith Exner Campbell in a closet?  Marilyn Monroe in the Plaza Hotel? Vietnam escalation? Pain pill addiction?  The arrogance to override the Secret Service security and ride in the presidental car without the bulletproof canopy?  Camelot is a fairy table based on the memory of a six-year-old girl and a lifelong adult alcoholic,  Like Camelot, Obama's campaign is simply storybook words, a fairy table.
